Create an Oozing Jelly Donut—Digitally

JellyDonut-fixed-WEB

This week, Bert walks us through turning a photo of a sugar donut into a jelly donut with a bite taken out of it.

His first step is removing the donut’s hole, so he selects the clone tool and clones from different areas of the donut to get a random effect with no duplication. Next, to create the bite effect, he clones from the background to remove that section of the donut and roughs out the edges.

To create the inside of the donut where the bite is, he uses a separate image of a slice of bread and clones the texture to build that into a new layer. Then, to create a sense of realism, he adds a few crumbs on another new layer by cloning them from a different image.

The final step is to create the jelly spilling out of the middle, so he adds a new layer called jelly. He chooses a hard-edged brush and paints in a red section with a drip at the bottom. To make the jelly seem less flat, he uses the burn tool and adds some darker tones around the edge, then lightens the middle section.

For the final touch, he adds new layer called sheen and then uses the pen tool to draw two paths along the bottom drip area of the jelly. He then chooses a small paintbrush and in the brush engine selects transfer>fade so the opacity of the line will fade at the ends. To create the glimmer in the middle of the drip, he uses a larger and softer brush to just touch the lower part of the drip.
