New feature: Play an entire chapter with one click

You can now play an entire chapter by clicking a chapter title on a course’s table of contents page. All movies in that chapter will play, one after another. Toggle auto-play on or off by clicking the auto-play chapter button at the bottom of the player.

Clicking a chapter title plays all movies within the chapter

If you don’t see this button in your player, log in to lynda.com and go to the my account menu at the top right of the page, then choose site preferences. Change your player preference to Flash, QuickTime Custom, or Windows Media.

New feature: Browse the latest releases by subject

The latest releases box, now with subject tabs

The Latest releases box on the home page is one of the first stops for many members to find new courses. To make it easier to find courses in the categories that you’re most interested in, we’ve added tabs that let you browse new courses by subject.

Each of the subjects also has its own RSS feed, so you can get notified of the newest releases you care most about. Learn more about RSS in Chapter 1 of the How to use lynda.com course.

To send us your feedback about this or any other site feature, click on the site feedback link on the bottom right of any page on the site. Or visit the contact page and choose the topic you’d like to tell us about from the drop-down menu.

New feature: List of last-viewed courses is now on the home page

The new "my course history" box

A lot of members have asked us for an easier way to get back to what they were recently learning when they log back in to lynda.com, so we added a My course history section on the home page. Now, you can instantly see the last five courses you’ve watched. Click any course title to go to its table of contents, or click more » to see your entire course history.

To send us your feedback about this and any other site feature, click on the site feedback link on the bottom right of any page on the site. Or visit the contact page and choose the topic you’d like to tell us about from the drop-down menu.

Computer literacy courses for Mac and Windows include assessments to assist in learning

This week, we released two courses with a new feature: Chapter-level assessments to help you determine how well you know your computer and what you might need to review further. Both Computer Literacy for Windows and Computer Literacy for the Mac with Garrick Chow walk through the skills necessary to use computers comfortably, while improving learning, productivity, and performance.

Both courses offer a thorough introduction to computers, networks, and computer peripherals such as printers, digital cameras, and more. In addition, basic procedures with software applications, the Internet, and email are covered. The assessment files includes an assessment movie, chapter-level assessments, and answer keys. Let us know what you think!

How do you use lynda.com bookmarks?

We introduced our new Bookmarks feature in the Online Training Library® back in January, and we’re curious how you’ve been using them. How often do you use them to mark and tag courses, chapters, individual video tutorials, and to mark specific points in a video in order to find a topic or technique again later? Do you add details to your bookmarks by clicking on the arrow next to the bookmark icon, or add tags to make it easier to sort your bookmarks?

Once you’ve bookmarked a place in a course or tutorial, how often have you found yourself going back and referencing them? [Click on Bookmarks in the My Training menu to see all the items you’ve bookmarked.]

If you haven’t been using bookmarks at all, we hope you’ll try them out. Start by watching the movie on how they work. If you decide you don’t like them, you can always disable them under Preferences > Bookmarks. Note: disabling doesn’t delete all of your bookmarks, it just tucks them away so you don’t have to look at them if you don’t want to. They’ll come back once you re-enable them.

Leave us a comment and let us know how (and if) you use the bookmark feature.

New lynda.com site feature: Improved Search

Our improved site search feature makes it easier than ever to find the video training you are looking for. Begin by typing a term into the search bar. Press Enter or Return, or click the search button. Our search engine looks through every course name, movie name, description, and transcript to find your search term. By default, search results are sorted by movie name. Narrow down the list of movies by clicking filter terms under the Category, Software, Vendor, and Author headings.

Under each heading, you will see terms listed in order of how many matches there are. Click on view more to see a full list of results, and click on any term to narrow down your results. You can then further refine your results by clicking on another term, or if you are looking for results from a particular year, you can click on an option under Release Year. You can also choose Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and/or Appropriate for All under Learning Level. Remove any filter by clicking on the X next to it.

You also have the option of only showing results for courses with a DVD version or with Closed Captioning, indicated by the icons next to the movie name. Click any of the column headings to sort the results by that heading, or use the sort by drop-down menu. If you’re currently signed in to your account, clicking a movie name will immediately open and play the movie. Click on the Courses tab to display search results by course name, or click on the Site tab to show results for other lynda.com pages, such as author bios and blog entries. We hope the improved search function enhances your learning experience at lynda.com.
