Anyone Can Draw!

Drawing Vector Graphics

Many believe that drawing is a skill you’re born with: If you weren’t lucky enough to get that gene, you’re destined to draw stick figures. Not true! Drawing is a skill that anyone can learn. It’s like skiing or writing or cooking; the more you do it, the better you’ll become. Walt Stanchfield, an American animator, once said, “We all have 10,000 bad drawings in us. The sooner we get them out, the better.” The fastest way to do this is to embed drawing into your daily routine. In Drawing Vector Graphics, author and illustrative designer Von Glitschka shares his thoughts on how to make this happen.

Tips for making drawing a daily habit 1. Bring a pen or pencil and a notebook with you at all times so you can capture a fleeting idea or draw what you see. 2. Keep drawing materials at your workstation so you can doodle whenever inspiration hits you or while you’re on the phone. 3. Doodle wherever you are (a waiting room, riding a bus, or even in a meeting).

Von uses an iPad case that incorporates a notepad and penholder so he has everything he needs in one spot. Booqbags.com offers a variety of cases to choose from.

The key to better drawing is to keep drawing, and as Von says, “The skill of drawing is like wine; it only improves with time.” So grab a pencil, leave your expectations at the door, and just have fun with it. The first drawings may not be award winners, but they are essential steps in honing your skills.
