Seamless Textures are very easy to create in ZBrush and they are useful for a variety of things. You can use them in other 3D programs to apply to your 3D models or you can use them directly in ZBrush. I'm going to show you how to quickly create a Seamless Texture based on a photograph. So I'm going to import a texture into the Texture palette and I'm going to import the redStucco image and this is just a photograph I made of a side of a wall.
I'm going to switch to the flat_Color so that when I put the texture on the canvas, the material does not affect the texture. I'm going to go to the Texture palette and I'm going to choose CropAndFill and this is basically going to make the canvas the exact same size as the original image. So here is our texture and in order to make this a Seamless Texture, I'm going to use the Cloner Brush and this works a lot like the Cloner Brush in Photoshop. To get rid of the seams, what I need to do is I need to paint across the top and the bottom so that they match, so that as I reposition the texture, nobody can tell that it is repeating.
So to do this, I'm going to hold the Tilda (~) key. This is the little wavy line key that's up in the upper left of the keyboard and when I drag on the canvas, you can see, I'm repositioning so I can see those seams there. So this is what was the top edge of the image. I have just dragged it down and to use the Cloner Brush, I can press Ctrl to sample part of the image and then just start painting here over that seam. I'm going to turn Zadd off. It doesn't seem to be affecting this particularly but it is a good idea to turn it off anyways when you are working on 2D textures.
I'm just going to hold the Ctrl button, sample parts of the image and then just paint over that seam. If I spend enough time in it, it will fool everybody. But I'm going to do it fairly quickly right now. I have got to change my Draw Size, sample from different parts of the image, I'm going to hold the Tilda(~) key again, drag a little bit more, see if there are any other obvious seams on the image.
It looks like I have done a pretty good job already. Once again, sample from the image by holding Ctrl and then paint over some of the areas. It looked like, I have a repeat. There we go, we have a nice seamless texture. If I move it around, I don't see any more obvious seams. So I can save this save this out and use it as a texture in another 3D program or apply this to my models in ZBrush.
