So when you are working on the 3D model and you like to add another level of Subdivision, in other words increase the number of polygons on the model, you may get a strange warning when you go to do this. This is my femaleHead_v01 model that I'm working on and I go to the Tool menu, I click on the Switch to move it here and I go to press the Divide button to add a level of Subdivision to the model and get this warning. The reason I'm getting this warning is because I'm trying to add a level of Subdivision while I'm in the middle of my Subdivision range. In other words I'm in Subdivision Level 3, there is also a higher level that I have already created, Subdivision Level 4 and they are low order levels as well.
When you want to add a level of subdivision you have to first go to the highest level available, Level 4 in this case and then press Divide and you see its added Level 5. So just remember to go to that higher level subdivision, before you add a new level of subdivision. I'm going to delete that higher level right now and show you another possible cause for getting that particular warning. If I turn on the Frame button, you will see that this model have Polygroups. Polygons have been arranged into Polygroups. I'm going to isolate the visibility of the face just by holding Ctrl+Shift and clicking on it, back of the head now disappears. Turn off Frame button. Let's say I have been working on this for a while and I'm ready to subdivide it and I go to the Tool palette and in Geometry, click on Divide. Again I get the same warning.
In this case, the reason I'm getting the warning is because I have parts of the model hidden or I have a Polygroup hidden. So to fix this I can just press Ctrl+Shift and click on the canvas to bring it back and now I can divide the model. In some cases a Polygroup might be very, very small. In this case the Polygroup was very obvious because it's the back of the head, which may find -- perhaps I had some Polygroups, there was a inner part of the ear that consisted of two or three polygons and that has been hidden. When you save a model with hidden Polygroups the next time you load it, these Polygroups will still be hidden.
So it's possible to miss that and then try and divide your model and wonder what's going on, why won't it divide? So that is two of the possible reasons why your model may not subdivide.
