Video: Using the exercise files

If you are a Premium member of the lynda.com Online Training Library or if you are watching this tutorial on a DVD-ROM, you have access to all the exercise files used throughout this title. I have downloaded the exercise files on to my computer to show you how they are organized. If I go into the folder, you will see we have three sets of files. We have an Assets folder, the chapter folders for each of the chapters, and also a file called code-snippets. Inside the Assets, we have a set of content that can use throughout the course.

Using the exercise files

If you are a Premium member of the lynda.com Online Training Library or if you are watching this tutorial on a DVD-ROM, you have access to all the exercise files used throughout this title. I have downloaded the exercise files on to my computer to show you how they are organized. If I go into the folder, you will see we have three sets of files. We have an Assets folder, the chapter folders for each of the chapters, and also a file called code-snippets. Inside the Assets, we have a set of content that can use throughout the course.

Some of this content will be used throughout the course, while in other parts, it's just added for you, so you can play around with it. We have a set of icons we will be using for the custom post types. We have large-scale JPEGs that you can scale down to whatever size you want. We have smaller scale versions of the same images, we have some dummy text items that you can use throughout the course, and we have three videos you can upload. In addition, there is this folder called uploads and also this file called culinaryartistryContent.

These two comprise a fully populated WordPress site with content. Finally, there's this file called chefHeader. It's just an image that we will be using as a header for the site. These files are provided, so you have something to work with but you can always replace them with other files of your own if you want to. For the chapters, we've created breakpoints for each of the movies within each chapter. As you follow along in this course, let's say you're in Chapter 6 movie number 4, you can reset your themes folder to match what I'm working with.

The way you do that is, you keep the folders open, and then you navigate to your WordPress installation, and go to the themes folder. From here, all you have to do is grab all the content from the movie chapter you're currently in and drop that into the themes folder. You will have to overwrite what's already there and after doing that you'll be at the exact same starting point I am, at the beginning of each movie. This approach applies to all the different chapters and you will notice,in the beginning we have far fewer files and folders than at the end, but the method is exactly the same.

You take whatever's currently in the folder for your movie and then you drag it into the themes folder. Of course, if this is your first time opening this course and you are cutting into the middle, even if you copy those files over to themes folder, that's not enough. You will still be running the stock theme, either 2011 or 2010, so you need to go into WordPress admin, go to Appearance > Themes, and then activate this one called Culinary Artistry.

Now your front page should look something like this and you are good to go. Finally, in the exercise files there is file called code-snippets. You can open code-snippets in the text editor and in here you will find the code-snippets for each of the movies. They are numbered and separated by these lines, so they're easy to pick apart and generally I've put in a small comments like In functions.php, followed by the actual code. As we work through the course, you'll see me taking code out of the code snippets and paste it in.

Where it's confusing, I have also added at the bottom of each code snippet the complete code for an entire file or for an entire function, so it's easy for you to simply grab the code and dump it into your files, save it, and then have the exact same result I have in the course. If you are a monthly subscriber or an annual subscriber to lynda.com, you don't have access to the exercise files, but you can still follow along from scratch with your own assets. Let's get started.
