Learn how to build an advanced portfolio site that showcases various types of content using the free open-source application WordPress. Author Morten Rand-Hendriksen demonstrates creating custom post types, differentiating and classifying content with custom taxonomies, and working with custom post templates. The course also shows how to embed YouTube videos, build index pages, display the latest posts from different custom post types, and hook custom post types into separate themes. Exercise files accompany with the course.
Before we get started, I'd like to introduce you to an important file that we will be using throughout this course, the code-snippets file. Whether you're a Premium member or a standard member of the lynda.com Online Training Library, you will have access to this file. If you're not a premium member, you can download this file from the free exercise files link on the course page. I have downloaded that file to my desktop here. It's called code-snippets.txt. Please note, if you are a Premium member this file is also included in your exercise files here.
The code-snippets file provides you with code snippets for each of the chapters where we use code snippets. I've laid it out in such a way that each chapter is marked and then inside you'll have the actual code snippets to paste in and I have also added some comments, you see them like this, that indicates where these code snippets are supposed to be entered. If in the movie, we are using several different code snippets, or we are using variants of a code snippet, I have also added a complete stack of all the code necessary. So can you simply copy all the code out and paste it into your file to be at the same place I am.
In addition, I made sure that older code snippets in this course are generic, so that you can use them even if the project you're working on is not identical to the one I'm working on. I will be using code-snippets file extensively throughout this course, but even when I'm not referencing the code- snippets file, you will find the code snippets for each movie in this file. So you can always copy it out and paste it into your theme. Now that you know how it works, let's get started.
