It may seem like a bit of a departure to start talking about YouTube in the middle of a WordPress course, and it is, but online video is becoming hugely important and a lot of people want to post videos on the web and feature them in their sites. Our demo site is no different. We have a custom post type specifically for videos, so we want to actually host videos in that custom post type. So what I am going to do is show you how to host videos online and showcase them on your portfolio site. The benefit of hosting your videos to YouTube is that they reach a much larger audience than if they were just on your website alone, and that YouTube is free.
If you want more information about YouTube, you can check out the YouTube Essential Training course on lynda.com. The first step to uploading video on YouTube is of course to set up an account and then log into that account. I've already done here, so I can jump straight to the upload process. So I will click on this Upload button here and then upload the video. So I'll navigate under my Assets and videos to this one with a bread in it, click Open, and then I have to give video a title. So I will call it Pizza Primavera, and I'll put in a description text.
For YouTube videos it's always a good idea to tag them. So I will Tag this one pizza, food, photography, and lynda. And I will put it under a category. Howto & Style. Make sure it's Public so people can see it and publish it under the Standard YouTube License. When I save these changes, the video goes public and I can now go and watch it. So I will just follow this link up here, and here's my video live to the world.
Now that the video is live on YouTube, I can see it, other people can see it, and more importantly you can take the video that lives on YouTube and embed it into your own site. YouTube prides itself on being free, open to everyone and supported on devices big and small. As a result, if your video is on YouTube, people can watch it on their computer, their phone, or even their television, and that's great for you!
