Learn how to build an advanced portfolio site that showcases various types of content using the free open-source application WordPress. Author Morten Rand-Hendriksen demonstrates creating custom post types, differentiating and classifying content with custom taxonomies, and working with custom post templates. The course also shows how to embed YouTube videos, build index pages, display the latest posts from different custom post types, and hook custom post types into separate themes. Exercise files accompany with the course.
Now that you've finished this course and you've created an online portfolio with WordPress using custom post types and custom taxonomies, I'm sure you're wondering where to go next. A good place to start is the WordPress Codex. Here you find documentation for all the different functions and functionalities inside WordPress. In particular you should go take a look at the Post Types page as well as the Taxonomies page. These cover both how post types work and have links to further tutorials and how taxonomies work.
The WordPress Codex is also always expanding, so you'll keep seeing new content appear and all of this is proper core documentation, so everything you find in here is accurate. If this was your first time working with WordPress, I suggest you go check out the WordPress 3: Essential Training course right here on lynda.com. It goes through everything there is to know about how WordPress works at the core, both for wordpress.com and for self hosted WordPress sites. You should also check out the WordPress 3: Building Child Themes course. This covers child themes in way more detail.
If you've just finished the Portfolios course and you want to further customize your child theme, you should go to the Building Child Theme course and use what's taught in that course to redesign your site completely. Thank you for watching and good luck building your own online portfolio using WordPress with custom post types and custom taxonomies.
