Create a child theme based on an existing parent theme in WordPress and change the functionality, presentation, or styling of your website. In this course, author Morten Rand-Hendriksen shows how to use the default WordPress theme, Twenty Twelve, as a basis for a new child theme and add custom menus; new headers, sidebars, and footers; and index pages with widgets and pagination to your site. The course also demonstrates how to add a responsive welcome message to your front page using PHP and jQuery, and how to edit the many templates found in a WordPress theme. Morten explains how to perform these changes using any code editor, the developer tools in the Chrome browser, and WordPress.
Before we get started, you have to make sure you have the Twenty Twelve theme installed in your WordPress installation. Yes, Twenty Twelve is a default theme in WordPress, but if you're running in old installation or you've uninstalled a theme for some reason, or for some other reason you don't have Twenty Twelve installed, you need to install it before we can continue. Twenty Twelve is available through the Themes directory. You can see the page for it here, and you can see a preview of the theme if you want and you can read support requests for it and you can see the rating.
If you want to find out if you have Twenty Twelve installed in your WordPress installation, you need to go to your WordPress site, this is the one I have running on my computer, and I am already logged in, so I'll go into the Dashboard and I'll go down to Appearance and Themes, and from here I can see what themes I already have installed. As you can see, I have the Twenty Eleven theme, which is active, and I also have the Twenty Ten theme. If you have the Twenty Twelve theme as well, you'll see it either down here under Available Themes or you'll see it activated at the top here, but I don't, so I need to install it.
The easiest way to install a new theme is to simply go to Install Themes, search for the Theme Name, find it in the Theme Directory here, see it's right here, and click Install Now. This will pull the theme directly from the WordPress theme directory into my WordPress installation and install it. Now all that's left is for me to activate the new theme, you can see that Twenty Twelve is now my active theme on my site, and if I go to the front page, you can now see Twenty Twelve the way it looks out of the box.
As the name suggests, a child theme requires a parent theme and that parent theme has to be installed for the child theme to work. Now that you have the Twenty Twelve theme installed in WordPress, it's time to get started.
