This course shows how to create a mobile version of an existing WordPress web site by leveraging ready-made solutions. Author Morten Rand-Hendriksen demonstrates how to install and configure three different plugins: WP Mobile Detector, which automatically detects the visitor's mobile device type and displays an auto-formatted theme; WPtouch, which transforms a site into an iPhone application-style theme with just a few clicks; and the WordPress Mobile Pack toolkit for making more fine-tuned adjustments. Morten also covers modifying the appearance of the mobile site and tracking its analytics and other stats. This course offers a variety of ways to get a stylish and nimble mobile site up and running quickly, without having to edit any code.
WordPress Mobile Pack is a powerful mobile plug-in for WordPress. That gives you several different ways of serving up mobile solutions from your WordPress site. This plug-in has been around for a long time and the reason why it stays so popular is because it has so many different ways of doing things. So when you install the WordPress Mobile Pack just like the name suggests, you're not just installing one function, you're installing several. So let's take a look at it. I'll go to my site and go the Dashboard and go to Plug-ins and Add New.
From here I'll search for WordPress Mobile Pack and here we get some different options. Now you'll notice that there are two main options here you have, WordPress Mobile Pack, and then you have WordPress Mobile Pack + HUNT. What you want is the straight up WordPress Mobile Pack, so I'll click and install that, so I'll click Install Now and Activate the Plug-in. And once this plug-in is activated you'll notice here we have several different options, we have the Mobile Switcher, we have Themes, Widgets, Analytics, and something called mpexo.
We'll look at all that later, but for now let's take a look at what this looks like right out of the box on a phone. When loaded on the phone you see that the WordPress Mobile Pack default theme is a stripped-down theme that gives you only text and very limited styling. That means it loads quickly, and it functions really well on the phone. If we go to the Blog section on the site, you get a list of the different blog items along with links to the categories, and also the comments, and if we go into a single post here, let's scroll to the bottom, you'll see you have accordion functionality for Comments, and for Leaving a comment for yourself, which makes this a very user-friendly theme for cell phones.
