This installment of Start with a Theme shows how to set up a video blog using WordPress and three different free themes that result in three different looks for your site. Series author Morten Rand-Hendriksen explains how to get up and running quickly with Twenty Twelve, Origami, and Sundance, and reviews the benefits and drawbacks of all three themes as they apply to video content in particular. Learn how to add video from services such as YouTube and Vimeo, enhance the visibility of your posts, add a video slider, and more.
Normally, in the start with the theme series, I show you three great themes found on the web that you can use. But for this particular purpose, creating a video blog, the current default WordPress theme, Twenty Twelve is a great option, so let's start there. Out of the box, what you're looking at is Twenty Twelve. If you're running WordPress 3.5, you should already have Twenty Twelve installed. If not, it's easy to find and install through the theme installer.
So if your site looks like mine does right now, you have Twenty Twelve installed. However, if you don't have it, you can go to the WordPress toolbar, select Themes-- you can also go to Appearance and Themes--go to Install Themes and then search for Twenty Twelve. You'll find Twenty Twelve in the installer and from here you can simply install it. You'll also see here if you already have it installed, it will say Installed. Twenty Twelve is a new modern theme that was designed and developed to match with the current design trend of ultra minimalism and lots of white space, and it's also developed to follow new modern web standards.
By that I mean the theme works well on your Desktop computers, and it also works well on tablets and even mobile phones. You can see what I'm talking about if you simply undock your window and then change the size of the window. You'll see this is a responsive theme, meaning, the content changes depending on how big the window is and you will notice most importantly that if you go below a certain size, the main menu changes from a standard menu to a menu button you can click on to open your menu options.
This is great if people are visiting your site on their cell phones and most importantly, notice what happens to the videos as I resize this window. You can see that the videos are scaling up and down to fit with the size of the window. That means no matter what size of tool people are using to access your site, they'll always get a good experience when they visit your site. Twenty Twelve is the latest and greatest for WordPress, and it's a theme that follows the most current web design and development standards and practices, so by using it, you're on the cutting edge of the web.
Add to that, Twenty Twelve is a great theme for video blogs, and we're all set to go.
