WordPress.com 2.7 Essential Training (or equivalent skill) is a prerequisite for getting the most out of this course.
Welcome to Self-Hosting a WordPress 2.7 Blog. I am Maria Langer. I've been blogging for about five years now and have written a number of computer how-to books including one about WordPress. I manage five self-hosted WordPress blogs, so I've really learned the ins and outs of this great web publishing platform, both for blogging and for content management. As you may know there are two versions of WordPress. WordPress.com is a free service based on the WordPress platform. The folks at Automatic, the makers of WordPress, provide a pre-installed solution that makes it easy for anyone to build and manage a blog.
But for folks who want more control over content, appearance and features, there is the self-hosted version of WordPress. This requires you to install the WordPress program files on a web server with PHP and MySQL. Once the installation is complete, you can fine -tune your setup to the use of custom templates and plug-ins to make your blog truly unique. This course explains how to install WordPress on an ISP server, customize appearance by modifying template files in CSS and add features through the use of plug-ins. It also offers a number of tricks you can use if you're more interested in WordPress' content management system features than a standard blog.
This course does not cover basic WordPress blogging techniques. If you're brand-new to WordPress you need to know how to create and publish content, you might want to check out the WordPress.com Essential Training material. It covers the basics you need to know to add and format content in your blog. Whether you're using a self-hosted WordPress site as a personal blog or a complex content management system for your business or anything in between, I am sure you'll find WordPress a great solution to meet your needs. I am glad to have the opportunity to show it to you. So let's get going with Self-Hosting a WordPress 2.7 Blog.
