Similar to sorting text alphabetically, we can sort by numbers, also known as a numeric sort. Now this doesn't necessarily mean that our entire content is numeric, just that the part we want to sort on is a number. Let me show you what I mean. You need to open up another document. So click your Open button, and navigate to the lesson 14 folder and click on all star team 2, that's the one we want to open here. So this looks pretty familiar if you followed along in the previous lesson, but now we have another column in here showing each player's number.
So in our second column here we've got numbers. This what we're going to sort on, so knowing we used tabs between each of these columns, between each of these entries, the Tab key was pressed. You see the tab stops on the ruler. We know that we're going to be sorting on the field 2. Alright, so first we need to select what we're going to sort so click and drag from the left margin all the way down. Once we've got it selected, we go up to our Sort button and you can see our previous sort selections showing here in the Sort By field.
So we're going to change field three to two. Now we see that field three is text over here, we didn't have to select it, it was automatic. We're going to sort by field two and it turns into number automatically. Very interesting. Now field two down below, under the Then By, is selected from our previous sorts as well. We don't need it so we're going to choose None here. So all we're going to do is sort by that second column called field two, which is our list of numbers.
We're ready to click OK. Look at that. One, two, three, all the way down to 35. Too easy. Just so you know, typical numeric sorts are done on numbers and a list such as sales figures, salaries, scores and so on. Think about some of the documents you work with that contain numeric data and now think about how easy it will be to sort that data. Next we'll do one more sort but this time the data will be in a table.
