In Creating an Online Resume: Hands-On Training, interactive design professor and enthusiastic educator Laurie Burruss teaches how to produce an online resume—and create a first web site in the process. Laurie suggests structure and information needed to create a winning resume, and shows how to design the pages with simple typographic principles and effective layouts. She explains how to use Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and control the design and structure of HTML documents through hands-on development. Exercise files with additional supporting materials accompany the course.
To slice graphics, Fireworks has created a whole set of tools just for creating slices so that you can export them out to your web images folder. The web tools are right here. The ones that we'll be using are the Rectangle Hotspot tool, or, the Slice tool. Again, there is also a third way that you can select things. If you know that the image that you made is exactly the right size, you can select that image, right-click on it and then go down and insert a Rectangular Slice from your contextual menu.
As soon as you do that, notice that you get this green layer, which is a lot like in the old days of print. It's a mask or a rubylith. And you can see that over in your layers area that this has now been called Slice. But we don't want to leave it just named Slice, because Fireworks will then start doing all the naming for us and remember I'm big on meaningful names. So come down to your Properties Inspector and you'll see that Fireworks has given this the name of myResume_r2_c2. This doesn't really mean anything to us.
We want to call this bg_texture. And then hit Enter. As soon as we do that, we see that the name appears on that slice. The interesting thing, again looking back in our panels here, is that Fireworks creates two copies virtually of your file. There is your graphics layers and then there are your web layers. This is terrific if you are a web designer because you can go back and forth from your web layers to your graphic layers. Now to select the gradient, I'm going to make this slightly larger.
I think I'll increase it up to about 300%. And then I'll use my Hand tool by pressing down the Spacebar and put it in a location where you can see it easily. So for the Gradient tool, I want to use my Slice tool. And I'm going to choose the simple Rectangle Slice tool and I'm going to start at the top left corner and then drag diagonally down. Again if I'm not quite accurate, I'll go back to my Selection tool, select this object and down here I want it to be 5 pixels wide and 100 pixels tall. And then use my Enter key to make sure that sticks.
Fireworks has again given it a name, but we're going to give our meaningful name by selecting it and replacing it with bg_gradient and then hit our Enter key. So now we are all ready to optimize and export, but we need to do one more save before we do that. Fireworks makes it very easy to create graphic images for your website.
