In Creating an Online Resume: Hands-On Training, interactive design professor and enthusiastic educator Laurie Burruss teaches how to produce an online resume—and create a first web site in the process. Laurie suggests structure and information needed to create a winning resume, and shows how to design the pages with simple typographic principles and effective layouts. She explains how to use Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and control the design and structure of HTML documents through hands-on development. Exercise files with additional supporting materials accompany the course.
This online resume has come a long way. We have covered so much territory. We have created several different versions of your resume. A simple text in ASCII text version, a PDF, and online website, and we've even created a print style sheet that allows the user to print from the browser. We've styled our text putting key typographic principles in place, such as readability, contrast, size, hierarchy, space, context, display, and subjectivity. We've used DIV tags and use of IDs to create layouts.
Both a one column, a page-like layout, and a fixed width two column layout created using the float property. We've created our text tiles based on relative measurement using ems, and we found that it works with the browsers, and the users choices, regardless of how the user sets the preferences. It creates a scalable, proportional approach to doing typographic design. We've created background image tiles in Fireworks that can enhance the texture and feel of your website. We've inserted images to create a faux rounded corner page that can expand and contract depending on the amount of content we have in our DIV boxes.
And finally you have learned what it takes to move your design from competent, to beyond the basics, and onto the professional level. In summary, it's this kind of care, organization, clarity, design principles applied and attention to detail in both the design of your HTML structure and CSS styles that will set you apart from the others in your field. Thanks for watching this title, and I hope you have fun creating your online resume.
