In Creating an Online Resume: Hands-On Training, interactive design professor and enthusiastic educator Laurie Burruss teaches how to produce an online resume—and create a first web site in the process. Laurie suggests structure and information needed to create a winning resume, and shows how to design the pages with simple typographic principles and effective layouts. She explains how to use Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and control the design and structure of HTML documents through hands-on development. Exercise files with additional supporting materials accompany the course.
The online resume layout looks good at this point, but on careful review the typography needs some more work. The font-size for the overall pages still looks a little large and some of the vertical spacing, margins and padding need more attention. Several ways exist to modify and edit your CSS. In Dreamweaver CS4, with the vertical layout side-by-side you can see your Design view and CSS view simultaneously. We'll choose this method for tweaking our page. So, go ahead and select Split view, but instead of selecting Source Code, select your online_resume CSS Style Sheet.
Locate your Body tag by moving up to the top. It was one of the first ones we created. So inside of here I've decided that I never actually created a font-size inside of the body tag. So it's kind of defaulting to whatever the browser has currently selected. So, I'm going to add a font-size inside of here. I'll put my I-beam after the last style, hit Enter, and as soon as I do that, Dreamweaver recognizes that I'm trying to create a style. In this case we know it's a font-size and I just keep typing and pretty soon I'm going to get to one that I want.
As soon as font-size is blue or selected, I'm going to hit my Enter key and this says, well what size do you want to make it? Well, I don't want to make it any of those things. I want to use my relative measurement. And I happen to know that 0.8 em is very close to what you and I would call 10 or 12 points in print. Just to remember that every style must end with a semicolon and then when I click refresh watch the change occur. Wow! That looks better already. Now we've deleted some of that vertical space, the fonts don't look overpowering.
It looks again that more page-like experience that we are going for. Go ahead and do File > Save All and just to demonstrate this, that we have decreased the size of the font, the overall look and feel, because we are using relative measurements. So even though we've change the size of the font it still feels the way it did before, but we don't have those overpowering headers and it looks much, much better and more tight and concise and better negative and positive space.
