Now that we've talked about common video platforms, and also common social networks and how they operate sometimes like video platforms. What about the ways in which the video platforms are actually social themselves? The fact is that you can have a lot of interactions with other users right on YouTube and also right on Vimeo. To see what I mean, I'm going to click on a specific video so you can see some of the social options that you have there.
(MUSIC). So here's our video. And if we scroll down, I realize that I have a Like button, which is a lot like Facebook. Also a Dislike button which Facebook doesn't have. I can leave comments directly on the video. In this way, with things like Likes and comments, YouTube itself does operate like a social network. You'll notice that there's also a social category on your Youtube homepage. YouTube actually use to have a lot more functionally that was social. But now a days, its doing more to integrate with other social networks including Google+ which is also a Google property.
These days, YouTube seems to want to focus mostly on serving the video and outsource the social aspects to Google+ or a different social network. We'll talk more about how these things integrate in another movie. If i switch over to Vimeo, you'll see it also has some social aspects. A number of these can be found in my account and by the way i am logged in now because you won't get any of the social functions without being logged in. We can go to a section on Following. This is where I follow different people as well as what are called channels and sort of keep track of the things I like.
If I go to a specific video, you'll see that I also have the ability beyond following to make a new comment and also to Like something. Again, much like Facebook when I Like something on Vimeo or YouTube. The whole community sees that and it's a social function of curating. Sharing what I like so other people might want to watch it. So, we're building a foundation here. It might seem a little complex until you realize that it's very open-ended. Social online video means video platforms that are sometimes social. And social platforms that also can show video.
There aren't always clean lines between these things. It'll be your decision to chart a path through them. So don't get confused that there's overlap. That overlap is real.
