Using depth of field
- Another big part of achieving the film look, is shooting your scenes with a more shallow depth of field. You can achieve this look by shooting with your lens in full telephoto for fixed and zoom lens cameras, shooting on a camera with a big imaging chip, or with a fast prime lens. Beautiful, crisp, professional lenses and more shallow depth of field translate into a more filmic look. Shallow depth of field generally looks much more interesting, artistic, and professional. In essence, more like film. For many years, this was cinematic look only achievable with big budget, 35 millimeter film cameras. Now the popularity of affordable DSLRs, big chip video cameras, and interchangeable prime lenses have made this more professional and cinematic look available to all of us.
