- Rental tip number six: Get insurance. Now, there is one fairly universal requirement that you're probably going to find at almost all rental houses and that's insurance. Professional film making gear is very expensive. Even a modest, small student video package of camera, lights and audio can easily top $10,000 to $15,000. And for larger projects and features the total equipment value will likely be many times that. Now, most people couldn't afford to pay for or even charge to replace a stolen van full of professional film gear. I don't care if you've got the titanium Visa card. So, insurance is a must for your protection, and for the protection of the rental houses. Nobody can afford to be financially on the hook for that big of a loss. So speak to the rental house to find out what their specific insurance requirements are. Allow yourself time to shop around and secure a policy.
