Whenever possible, I like to try to scout out my location ahead of time, but in reality, it's just not always possible to access a location beforehand, especially if the shoot is coming up very soon, or if it's in another state or remote location. In that case, at a minimum, I like to ask my client or the location owner to simply pop off some pictures on their cell phone and text or email them to me. If there's a website for the location, many times I can also find photos online that will give me some better idea of what I'll be dealing with when I arrive. Basically what I'm looking for is what is the general lighting situation like? Is it dark? Well lit? Very bright? These are all things I want to know. What type of light? Am I dealing with florescent lighting, daylight from large windows or skylights or mixed lighting? All important to ask. I also want to know about the electricity for my lighting. Do I have access to outlets and enough power? Am I going to need to bring 50-foot of…
