- Rental tip number two: do your homework. There are many areas and expenses in filmmaking where I think it makes sense to shop strictly by price. However, renting equipment is definitely not one of them. We all want the very cheapest price we can get, of course. But much more than just the rental rate, there are some other important considerations that you should factor into your decision to go with a particular equipment rental house over another, such as: condition of the equipment. Is most of the equipment up to date and well maintained? Do they have the most common accessories, parts, and extras you need for the particular gear you're renting? $65 for a weekend lens rental may sound like a good price, until you get it and realize that the lens is scratched, off focus, a different brand than you reserved, or otherwise sub-par compared to what you thought you were getting.
