- This week on Pro Video Tips, I'm gonna show you how to calibrate any display monitor using color bars. Now, you've all seen color bars before, they're the multi-colored stripe patterns generated by video equipment such as cameras, monitors, and editing programs. However, you may not know exactly what color bars are for, or how to use them, so that's what I'm going to be jumping into today. Color bars are used to help ensure that your video colors are accurate from one monitor to the next. By recording the color bar pattern at the top of your footage, you now have a standard visual reference point that will allow you to more accurately adjust the image on various display monitors, projectors, or TVs to look exactly as you intended it to when you recorded it. It's a good practice, and especially important if you're shooting for broadcast or theatrical screening, to try to include a minute of color bars at the beginning of each media card.
