What lighting style is best for your story?

From a production perspective, a high key lighting approach might be a very efficient way to light, since it doesn't require too many adjustments after any set, which obviously speeds up the shoot. But this might not be the right approach for a romantic scene, or if what you need is portability. Mixing natural and artificial light sources can make a beautiful girl look like an alien. And then, after a few adjustments to properly expose for her skin tones and capture the richness of the background, one can achieve the opposite look. As we discussed before, there isn't a perfect way to light a scene. We must consider gear, crew, access to locations, schedule and budget. But above all, we need to ask ourselves, what is the story we're trying to tell, and how can lighting enhance this particular story? Only when we truly understand the role of lighting in our story can we choose the necessary tools and techniques to enhance it. And then we can determine if our choices are working or not…
