How does lighting reveal or obscure subjects and objects?

Let's discuss two different stories and the lighting approaches that help us reveal or obscure certain subjects. Story number one. The chef is the main character. The kitchen is irrelevant or at the very least, secondary to the story. To tell this story, we chose a low-key lighting strategy in order to obscure the background, hide what was irrelevant, and bring all the attention to the chef. To achieve this look, we had the kitchen safety lights on and one LED light directly in front of the chef. Here we can see the placement of the lights and cameras in relation to the chef. To obscure everything but the chef and add a lot of drama to the scene, we turned all the lights off, except the LED. Let's move to our second story, where the kitchen is the main character. The key element is the space, and the chef simply happens to be there. In this case, we opted for a high-key approach. We flooded the space with a couple of daylight fluorescent lights at full power, bounced off the ceiling…
