Introduction
Welcome
00:04 (MUSIC). Hi, and welcome to Up and Running with
00:05 Articulate Storyline. I'm David Rivers.
00:07 This course is designed to get you acquainted with Storyline, Articulate's
00:11 interactive e-Learning authoring software.
00:15 We will start by creating a project from scratch and also from existing PowerPoint
00:19 slides you may already have on the subject.
00:21 Well, look at ways to bring life to your project through the use of images,
00:25 animations, and characters. And then we'll explore ways to assess way
00:29 learning with Storyline through review questions and full blown quizzes.
00:33 Of course, getting your content out to the masses is a huge part of any
00:36 e-Learning project. So, we'll examine the many publishing
00:39 options you have in Storyline, including options like publishing and learning to HTML5.
00:45 We'll also investigate publishing to a learning management system or LMS.
00:50 There's plenty to cover, so let's get started.

Using the exercise files
00:00 If you have a premium membership with lynda.com, you'll have access to the
00:04 exercise files, and the exercise files allow you to follow along with me step by step.
00:09 So if you plan on using them, I highly recommend placing them in a convenient
00:13 location, such as your desktop. When you double-click this folder, you'll
00:16 notice sub-folders for each of the chapters in this title.
00:20 When you double-click one of the sub-folders, you'll find the files we'll
00:24 be using in that chapter. Now, if you don't have access to the
00:27 exercise files, not to worry. You can try following along with your own
00:31 files, or you can learn lots by simply sitting back, relaxing, and watching.

1. Getting Started
What is Articulate Storyline?
00:00 Before we start using Storyline to author interactive E-learning content, let's get
00:05 a feel for what Storyline really is. If you're an experienced user of an
00:09 earlier version of Storyline, you can probably skip this movie.
00:13 Storyline update 2 is the latest version our articulate standalone elearning
00:18 authoring software. Now, it's not to be confused with
00:21 Articulate Studio, often referred to simply as Articulate.
00:26 Because Studio was the only product from Articulate for the longest time, most
00:30 people refer to it as Articulate. Well, Articulate, though, is the name of
00:34 the company that manufactures both Studio and Storyline.
00:38 Studio allows one to edit slides using PowerPoint, while Storyline allows one to
00:43 author courses using a single standalone program.
00:47 And Storyline is loaded with tools to help authors of E-learning content to
00:51 create things like product demonstrations to show learners how a product is
00:55 supposed to work, software simulations, to show the software or a specific
01:00 feature of that software in action.d Branched scenarios.
01:03 To allow learners to focus on relevant content based on the selections they make
01:07 and even soft skills and compliance traninig to ensure learners have their
01:11 skills sharp and comply with various policies and procedures.
01:16 You can also create quiz's to test a learners comprenhenion of the content
01:20 they just digested. So who would use a program like Storyline?
01:25 Well, by far, the largest group of Storyline users will come form a training background.
01:29 These folks have been using Storyline to author content and publish it to their
01:33 learners, and they include corporate trainers, who might use Storyline to
01:37 author software or product demos, simulations and Soft skills and
01:41 compliance training. Also educators and learning and
01:44 development personnel with limited programming capabilities will use
01:47 Storyline for many of the same reasons. Sales and sales support people have been
01:52 known to use Storyline as well to create compelling product demos and simulations
01:56 for the products they sell. So now that we better understand what
02:00 Storyline is and who is using it to create E-Learning.
02:03 We should really understand the basics of eLearning before we dive into Storyline
02:07 to start authoring our own content. That's coming up next.
02:11

Understanding elearning basics
00:00 Because we use Storyline to create elearning content and now mlearning
00:04 content, the mobile version of elearning, we should understand the basics of elearning.
00:08 This will help us to understand the ultimate goal of what we're creating.
00:13 So let's start with defining what elearning is.
00:16 There are many definitions out there but they all share the same general
00:19 description and that is learning activities that are delivered in an
00:23 electronic format typically using a computer with a connection to the internet.
00:28 Elearning is often called by other names too, like distance learning, distance
00:32 education, web-based training, online learning, and others.
00:35 And with the recent influx of mobile devices, we now begin to hear of mobile
00:40 learning or mlearning and story line will allow you to create both elearning and
00:45 mlearning content. Elearning can be used to educate learners
00:48 on just about anything you can imagine. But there are three major types of
00:52 elearning to consider. First, we have informal elearning.
00:57 When surfing websites, many will now offer elearning material at no cost.
01:02 Informal elearning, such as studying software materials, can help you improve
01:06 your knowledge and polish your skills. Then we have something known as corporate elearning.
01:11 Many businesses out there will train their employees through elearning
01:15 programs to prepare professional staff for success in their industry and keep
01:19 their knowledge current. And then there is academic elearning.
01:23 Students can often earn an accredited degree through the internet, thanks to
01:27 hundreds of elearning degree programs now being offered.
01:30 Storyline can be used to create any of these types of elearning.
01:34 And when we create elearning courses and content, it's important to understand the
01:39 various components of an effective elearning course if we want our learners
01:43 to benefit from our efforts. One, it should be interactive.
01:47 By making your elearning content interactive, people become engaged and
01:51 they're more willing to make the most of their online learning environment.
01:55 It also allows you, the author, to include more sophisticated materials
01:59 without scaring learners who might be new to the information.
02:02 We'll be using Storyline to create interactivity in our elearning projects.
02:07 It should also be memorable by approaching each topic in your elearning
02:11 project with creativity. And how you convey the information can
02:15 really help to increase the effectiveness of your training and make it stick.
02:19 You need your learners to remember what they've learned, and Storyline has a
02:23 number of features and functions to help make your elearning project interesting
02:27 and memorable. It should also be flexible.
02:30 Your elearning project should take into account various levels of learners and
02:34 abilities, as well as changing content by making it simple for people to progress
02:40 and track their progress. They can easily return to a place where
02:43 they've left off. Also, be prepared to accommodate changes
02:46 in your elearning content, as products evolve over time.
02:50 If content in your elearning project becomes incorrect or outdated, its
02:55 lifespan becomes drastically reduced. Your elearning should be helpful.
02:59 It's also important to make your elearning tool helpful so people who may
03:04 need instructions or tips for completing modules, as well as resources for
03:07 accessing definitions and terms, or even who to contact in case of a technical
03:12 issue is there. Consider adding a help button that is
03:16 clearly visible, and a glossary. Of course, this is easily done with Storyline.
03:21 And it should be accessible. Busy schedules often make it challenging
03:25 to accommodate time for elearning tools, so by making tools accessible from the
03:29 Internet, you give people the option of taking advantage of them from outside of
03:34 a work environment. And you might also consider creating a
03:36 CD-ROM-based version of your training for low-bandwidth scenarios for users to take
03:41 home or on the road to have on hand when needed.
03:44 The incremental cost of including a CD-ROM version of the training can be
03:48 minimal compared to the extended reach of the training.
03:51 With Storyline, there are a number of publishing options to make your elearning
03:56 tools accessible. These are some of the very basic
03:59 principles of elearning to consider once you start the creation process.
04:04 Storyline includes tools, features, and functions to help you author content that
04:09 takes into consideration each of these components.

Touring the Articulate Storyline interface
00:00 Just before we begin our first e-learning project here in Storyline we should get
00:04 comfortable in our new environment. So we're going to take a tour of the user interface.
00:09 Even open up an existing project that's well underway, so you have an idea where
00:13 you're headed in this course. When you first launch Storyline, this is
00:16 what you see. Kind of a welcome screen here, with some
00:19 options down the left for creating new projects, or opening existing projects.
00:23 You'll also see some help or support on the right hand side, including tutorials
00:28 and downloads, such as templates. Let's being over here on the left hand
00:31 side under create a new project. Clicking new project will begin a new
00:36 blank project. You'll be starting from scratch in this scenario.
00:40 One blank new scene with a blank side sitting there waiting for your input.
00:45 If you prefer to get started by recording what's on your screen you can do that by
00:49 using record screen. Or if you had a slide deck in PowerPoint
00:52 that you want to use as part of your elearning project.
00:55 You can import it directly into Storyline and start your new project that way.
01:00 Same thing if you have a quiz from Quizmaker, or a project template from Articulate.
01:05 Notice that clicking this link will display a couple of options, but you can
01:09 also go to the right-hand side to access additional templates and download them.
01:13 Down here on the bottom left-hand corner, you can open Recent Projects.
01:18 As you begin to create projects and work on them, the ones you worked on most
01:22 recently will appear on a list here. But until then, you'll simply find the
01:26 browse link that allows you to go browsing on your computer for an existing
01:30 project so you can open it up and continue work on it that way.
01:34 That's where we're going to go. So let's click Browse.
01:37 And if you have the exercise files, we're going to go to the chapter one folder of
01:40 those exercise files where you'll find sample project.
01:44 We'll double click that, or click once and click Open.
01:47 And this will open up the project, which totally changes our user interface.
01:53 All right, so we'll begin at the very top left hand corner where we find the
01:56 Articulate button. This is similar to a file menu in older UIs.
02:01 If we click this, we'll see some file options like creating new projects,
02:05 opening existing projects, importing. Just like we saw from the main screen.
02:10 We can also Save or Save As from here, Print, Publish, even Close up a project
02:15 from here or Exit Storyline altogether. We're not going to select from this menu
02:20 so we'll just click down below it to close it up.
02:22 Also we have something called the Quick Access Toolbar here.
02:25 You'll see Icons by default such as Save, Undo and Redo.
02:31 There's also this drop down that allows you to customize the quick access tool bar.
02:35 We'll talk about that in the next movie. Way off to the far right hand side, your
02:39 minimize maximize restore button, and the close button which is the same as
02:44 choosing exit story line from the articulate menu Next you're going to
02:48 notice a series of tabs representing different ribbons.
02:52 If you're a PowerPoint user, this is going to look quite familiar to you.
02:56 First of all, with the Home tab selected, you'll see options like the Clipboard
03:00 options for cutting, copying, and pasting.
03:03 Here's our scenes section of the ribbon, where we can create new scenes, choose a
03:07 starting scene, use question banks. Under the slide section is where we go to
03:12 add new slides, change the layout of those slides, duplicate slides, even
03:17 record our screen from here as well. And then there's a Publish section with
03:21 different options for publishing your project.
03:24 But when we start to work with different objects, slides, etc, the ribbon is going
03:29 to change its dynamic. So for now we'll just keep it the way it
03:33 is and go to the next tab, the insert tab.
03:35 We'll find a number of things that can be inserted.
03:38 If they're grayed out, they're currently can't be because of the view we're
03:41 looking at. We can add a new slide and record a
03:44 screen from here but we can't. Insert pictures, and screenshots, and
03:48 characters, videos, sound, etc. until we have a slide open that we're
03:53 actually working on. There's also a design tab here for
03:56 changing the look and feel of our slides kind of like the templates and themes
04:01 that you're used to using in PowerPoint. In fact, these will probably look very familiar.
04:06 So if I want to change the total design of my project, I can choose from one of
04:11 these built-in themes. I can choose from color schemes and fonts
04:15 as well, but typically choosing a theme will include various color schemes and
04:20 fonts to be used in your project. Animations, just like we see with a
04:24 PowerPoint presentation for Animating slides and objects on those slides.
04:29 When the slide itself is animated, moving from one slide to the next, that's called
04:33 a transition, and you'll see a number of transition animations to choose from, and
04:38 options for how fast that happens, and an option to apply those transitions or
04:42 animations to everything. There's also a preview button off here to
04:46 the right. Under the view tab we have some view options.
04:49 You'll notice currently selected is Story View.
04:51 Story View is kind of an overview of your project.
04:55 It gives you a birds eye view of what's going on, the flow of your project from
04:58 one slide to the next, for example. You'll also be able to see separate
05:02 scenes show up either next to each other or on top of each other, depending on how
05:07 they're linked. Notice we can also work with slide masters.
05:11 And, if we wanted to, we could preview and publish from here, as well.
05:15 And there's a Help tab, as well, for getting help on anything to do with
05:19 articulate Storyline. Go back to the Home tab, and now we'll
05:22 move down to the lower part of our screen.
05:24 Under Story View, as I mentioned, we're looking at scenes.
05:28 Scenes are separated into these gray-shaded areas.
05:31 And you can have several scenes. It's just a way of organizing your project.
05:36 You could think of it as chapters, for example, or sections.
05:40 And you can use scenes any way you'd like.
05:43 You can see this particular project has the orientation or training scene, and a
05:47 quiz scene. And then, as we scroll down, you'll see a
05:51 link between the two. We'll talk about linking and so on as we
05:54 move through the various movies in this course.
05:57 Now, if we wanted to work on an actual slide, we'd just simply go to the slide
06:01 and double-click. We'll go to our Opening Menu.
06:03 When you double-click the slide, notice what happens.
06:07 A new tab appears here, and we've just changed views.
06:10 If we go up to the View tab and click there, notice now we're in something
06:14 called Normal View. And this is for working with the content
06:17 on your slides. Over here on the left you'll still be
06:20 able to see a many representation of the scene that you're working in, and the
06:25 flow from slide to side. Including any branching that might happen.
06:29 Also, here on the slide you'll notice we have objects and down below, a timeline
06:34 related to the slide itself as well as any of the objects that appear on the
06:39 slide, and we can adjust those timings Via the timeline.
06:42 We can also have different states. So an object could be invisible.
06:46 Could be visible. We could have characters for example,
06:49 with different expressions, or different states.
06:52 There's also, a notes tab here as well. For adding notes.
06:56 Could be a transcript, for example, for what's being said on your slide.
07:00 And on the righthand side you'll see a couple of different panels as well.
07:03 Something called Triggers. Anything that can be clicked has a trigger.
07:07 So perhaps clicking one of these options will trigger something.
07:11 What's going to happen and when is it going to happen are the options we'll be
07:15 talking about when we get into triggers. And here's where we go to create new
07:19 triggers, edit existing triggers, we can even copy triggers to save us some time.
07:24 And then down below, you'll also see another option here for slide layers.
07:29 Now there only happens to be one layer here on our opening menu slide, but we
07:33 could have several layers. Just think about what's going to appear
07:37 on a slide in different layers. And you could have triggers for those layers.
07:42 And timings as well in the timeline and as we move back to the home tab now and
07:47 select something on our slide like new hire orientation, you'll notice most of
07:52 the items now appearing on the ribbon are available to us.
07:55 So, because we're inside a text box here for example, we can adjust the font and
08:00 paragraph options. Also, you'll see a new tab appearing at
08:04 the end of the ribbon here. Under Drawing Tools we have format, and
08:08 clicking that allows us to do some formatting based on what's selected.
08:12 If we go down a little further and click one of these options like View Training.
08:16 Notice this is not a text box so most of those options are no longer available.
08:20 But under format you'll see picture tools above.
08:23 That's what I mean by dynamic. Our ribbon's always changing, so it pays
08:26 to pay attention to what's going on up above.
08:29 You'll always see options that relate to what you're doing in your project.
08:33 We deselect that, notice everything disappears, right?
08:36 Let's close up the tab nest to opening menu here.
08:40 That closes up just the view. We're still working on our project, but
08:44 we're back to story view, where we started.
08:47 To close a project, we can go up to the Articulate button, give it a click, and
08:51 select Close. If we'd made changes, we'll be prompted
08:55 to save those changes. And now we're back where we started.
08:59 When we first launched story line. So that's a quick look at the user interface.
09:05 The new environment here, in our articulate story line.
09:08 You should be feeling a little more comfortable with what you see on your
09:12 screen, as we begin to create our project.
09:14 Of course, what you see can be adjusted. So we'll talk about certain options that
09:19 you can adjust or customize in the next movie.
09:21
Collapse this transcript
Setting up global preferences
00:00 As you begin work with Storyline, you'll notice certain things happening in the
00:03 background by default when it comes to, for example, spelling, automatically
00:08 correcting errors, uploading or publishing, and so on.
00:12 Well, you have access to have all of those settings and you can customize
00:16 those settings to work the way you want them to.
00:18 So we're going to take a quick peak now by going to the Articulate button.
00:22 And then down to Storyline Options and clicking there.
00:25 Notice, there's only one category. That's general.
00:27 And over here on the right-hands side under Options, we'll begin with the very
00:31 first one, which is checked off typically by default.
00:34 And that is to Check for updates at startup.
00:36 Every time you launch Storyline ,if you have an internet connection, it's going
00:40 to check for any updates that might exist.
00:42 And if there are some you'll be notified. I kind of like that.
00:45 You'll always have the latest and greatest from Articulate Storyline.
00:48 So you can choose to keep that checked or not.
00:50 And then, you'll also see something for Enable publishing for manual upload to
00:54 something called Articulate Online. You need to have an account.
00:59 There is a subscription fee associated with this allowing you to publish your
01:03 work online to an alternative to an LMS. Now, if you do have such an account, you
01:09 can enable publishing for manual upload meaning, you can publish separately from
01:14 uploading the assets that go with your project.
01:16 I'm going to leave it unchecked because I don't have an Articulate Online account.
01:20 Also, every now and then, you'll see prompts popping up on your screen, asking
01:24 if you really meant to delete something for example.
01:28 Do you really want to quit without saving?
01:30 Well, if you don't like seeing those pop-ups all the time, there's usually a
01:34 checkbox that allows you to not show it ever again.
01:37 And if you choose those check marks, you won't see those warnings.
01:40 If you kind of want the warnings back. Here's where you go.
01:43 Click the Reset, don't show again prompts button.
01:46 And you'll see a message saying that the Don't show again prompts have been reset
01:50 to display until you check them off again.
01:53 So we'll click OK. Also, you'll see options for spelling and auto-correct.
01:58 Let's start with Spelling options. Under here, you'll see certain things
02:01 that can be ignored when you check spelling.
02:04 So if you do work with a lot of text for example, you might want to ignore words
02:08 that are in uppercase. If they're in uppercase, it doesn't
02:10 matter how they're spelled they won't be considered a spelling error.
02:13 I like that one. Same thing for anything that might
02:15 contain numbers. Internet addresses as well can be ignored.
02:20 And they won't show up as typos, for example.
02:23 Capitalized words, I'm going to leave that one unchecked.
02:26 But you can go down the list, picking and choosing what you want to display or not.
02:31 For example, auto correct is that something you want to use?
02:33 If so, leave it checked off. We'll talk about that separately in a moment.
02:38 You can also change your dictionary from here.
02:40 I have English U.S. for example, but I'm in Canada so I might
02:43 want to change my dictionary to the Canadian dictionary and that way
02:47 different typos will show up a little bit differently from the U.S.
02:51 version. I'll leave it at English US.
02:54 All right, let's click OK, if you made any changes that saves them, and go to
02:58 Auto correct options. Sometimes, you'll be making typos as
03:01 you're entering text. Go back to fix them and they're already
03:04 fixed for you. That's because there's an Auto Correct
03:06 section, similar to what you'd find in the Office Suite for example, including PowerPoint.
03:11 This is all familiar to you, you can probably skip over it, but the auto
03:14 correct section is kind of interesting, because you'll see, there's a list that
03:18 appears here with common typos for example ABD becomes AMD that's just a
03:23 shift of the fingers. With correct items on the left and their
03:27 replacements on the right. You can even add your own if you wanted to.
03:32 For example I worked a the childrens hospital of eastern Ontario.
03:35 All I could type in the short form CIEO in lower cases like that and on the right
03:41 hand side have it replaced with the full blown Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario.
03:46 So you can add your own little shortcuts that way.
03:48 I'm going to take that out. I won't be using that any longer.
03:51 And as you go down the list, you can see it's alphabetical.
03:54 There's quite a long list of common typos, and you can add your own.
03:58 Alright, let's click OK, and sneak back to spelling options, and next to auto
04:04 correct, we'll click the Options button there.
04:06 Notice, that's another way to get there. Click Cancel, and we're back.
04:11 Cancel again, and we're back to our general Storyline Options.
04:15 There's also a section down below for Proxy settings.
04:18 Again, if you might be using an Articulate Online account, using a proxy
04:23 server might be necessary in your organization.
04:26 You'll need to talk to your IT people to get the address and the port for that
04:29 server, otherwise, stick with the default, which is to use the Internet

04:37 to start creating projects here in Storyline.

2. Building a Presentation
Starting a new project
00:00 Once you have a basic plan for your elearning project, it's time to start creating.
00:04 And that's exactly what we're going to do.
00:07 Let's assume it's a brand new idea and we don't have existing content.
00:11 That means creating a new project from scratch.
00:15 And to do that, we launch Storyline. And here from the Create a new project on
00:19 the left side of the splash screen, we'll select New project.
00:24 Go ahead and click that and you'll see we get one brand new scene untitled with one
00:30 blank untitled slide inside that scene. This is the default, brand new, blank
00:36 project from scratch. So now it's a matter of adding scenes to
00:40 stay organized and adding slides to those scenes and adding content to those slides.
00:46 Now, before we actually get started doing any of that, one thing I like to take
00:50 care of is the story size. Now, depending on what your viewers will
00:54 be using to view your project and what you're working on, you may want to adjust
00:59 the size. Let's take a look at the design tab up
01:02 here at the top. On the left-hand side, you'll see a story
01:05 size button. Give it a click.
01:07 By default, you're creating a story size of 720 by 540, which is a 4 by 3 aspect ratio.
01:15 I'm going to be working on a widescreen, and most of my viewers viewing this
01:19 project and the end result will also be on a computer using a wide screen.
01:23 I might want to adjust it. That's exactly what we'll do by clicking
01:26 the drop-down. You'll notice there's another preset here
01:29 for a widescreen option, 16 by 9, and you can also create a custom size if you like
01:34 as well. Let's go with the 16 by 9.
01:36 Now notice the new width and height have changed to 720 by 405.
01:41 And this little check mark in the lock aspect ratio will come in handy.
01:46 If we want to bump up the resolution. Let's say we have a higher resolution
01:50 monitor and we want to use 1024 as the width.
01:53 Well, we can go right in here instead of clicking the drop-down and choosing custom.
01:57 We'll just click and drag over the existing width of 720 and type in
02:00 something like, say, 1024, a common width.
02:03 When you hit the Tab key, watch what happens to the height.
02:06 It just got larger. And that's why down below, you can see
02:09 our new size is larger. And we have some options.
02:13 These options really apply to existing content.
02:16 For example, if we had slides with content, we can have that content scaled
02:20 to fit the new slide size. Or we could simply keep all of the
02:24 content the same and fill the background. Those are a couple of different options.
02:29 If we do that, we can choose the story position.
02:31 But it really doesn't matter to us, because we're starting with a blank
02:34 slide, we're doing it before we have any content in our project.
02:38 If you were to choose a smaller size, you can see scaling to fit or cropping are
02:42 the two options for existing content. All we need to do though is click OK.
02:46 And we have our new slide size appearing inside the thumbnail inside our untitled
02:52 scene here in story view. The first thing you might want to do is
02:55 change the name of the scene from Untitled Scene to something else, could
02:59 be Scene 1 or just double-click and type whatever you like.
03:03 I'm going to type in Orientation Training.
03:07 (SOUND) I'll have a separate scene for my quiz, for example.
03:11 Press Enter and you just changed the name of your Scene.
03:14 As you add Scenes they will be numbered automatically.
03:17 So this is still Scene 1, Orientation Training.
03:20 Inside I have my Untitled slide. Notice we're in story view here, but when
03:25 we want to start adding content to our slide, we simply double-click the
03:29 thumbnail and we switch views now to our Storyview.
03:32 Over here on the left hand side, you'll see the scenes as you create them, and
03:36 you'll see your slides in that selected scene.
03:39 There's our Untitled slide, the thumbnail, and here's our content over
03:42 here on the right-hand side. If you want to be able to see the whole
03:45 slide, you might consider clicking the View tab at the top and choosing Fit to Window.
03:50 And now we're ready to start creating. The first thing I'd like to do is give
03:54 this slide a name. I'm going to double-click the tab that
03:56 says Untitled Slide and type in Welcome. Now notice we don't change the numbering.
04:02 That's automatic. And that's going to be handy later on
04:04 when we start inserting extra slides. The slides will all get renumbered.
04:08 And they link to one another, so when we move from one slide to the next, it's an
04:12 easy transition. So we're well on our way now to creating
04:16 our new project from scratch. But if you already have existing content,
04:20 say, in a PowerPoint presentation, you can get a nice head start by creating
04:24 your new project using that presentation. That's what we're going to do next.
04:28 So let's close up this project without saving it.
04:31 We'll go up to the Articulate button, give it a click, and click close down at
04:35 the bottom. And we'll choose Don't Save because we
04:38 have another option, and that is to create one on the fly using an imported
04:43 Slide Deck from PowerPoint. We'll do that next.
04:46

Creating a project from PowerPoint
00:00 Before programs like Articulate Storyline came along, PowerPoint was a fan favorite
00:05 for most training and development folks. It was useful in a live instructor-led
00:09 training scenario, but you could also create kiosk-type presentations that
00:14 would be self-running or even have some level of interactivity, but it was very limited.
00:19 The fact is, you may have many presentations based on a number of
00:24 learning projects in the past and the good news is, you can use those here in Storyline.
00:30 In fact, you can begin your brand new project using an existing PowerPoint presentation.
00:35 That's what we're going to do right now. Once you launch Storyline from the splash
00:39 screen, you'll go under the Create a new project section and click Import PowerPoint.
00:44 If you have the exercise files, you'll now go to the Chapter 2 folder of those
00:48 files, where you'll find KinetEco_employee_orientation.
00:52 Now, this slide deck has been used in the past for employee orientation session Now
00:57 we're going to pop it into an e-learning project here in Storyline by selecting it
01:03 and then clicking Open. Now, depending on your slide
01:06 presentation, the number of slides, and the content of those slides, this could
01:11 take several minutes. So we'll let Storyline do its thing,
01:14 reading the PowerPoint project, analyzing the slides, and then they all appear
01:19 here, where we can choose to import them all By simply clicking import or pick and
01:25 choose the slides that we want to bring in.
01:27 This is also the case after the fact if we want to import slides from a
01:30 presentation to an existing project that we've already started in storyline.
01:36 So with everything highlighted, and you'll notice a select all option to
01:39 select everything, and none, to deselect everything.
01:43 You could then go pick and choose using the control key on your keyboard.
01:46 Or the shift key to select a group of slides that are contiguous, but by
01:50 default, all of these slides are already selected.
01:53 We have 24 of them here. Where will they go?
01:56 By default, into a brand new scene, a single scene, so we might need to split
02:01 things up a little bit later on, which we will do in this course.
02:04 But for now, we'll let them go into a New Scene.
02:07 If this was an existing project that we were importing slides into, we could
02:11 click the drop down and import them into a current scene.
02:14 But we'll leave New Scene selected. Notice the scene name will be the same as
02:18 the name our presentation. If you want to change that, you can.
02:21 I'm going to change it from kinetEco employee orientation to New Hire
02:29 Orientation, like so. Now it's time to import the slides.
02:33 Click the import button and then just simply sit back and wait for each of the
02:37 slides to be imported into your brand new project that is being created on the fly.
02:43 Another thing to keep in mind is the slides of the slides in Powerpoint.
02:47 If they were created, like this presentation, using a 16 by 9 aspect
02:52 ratio, that's going to be the size of your story.
02:55 And once we get into Storyline, you'll find a number of similarities to the
02:59 Storyline program. That you see in PowerPoint for example.
03:03 So lets just give this a minute to import, and then we'll be ready to continue.
03:07 Alright, eventually all of the slides are imported into our brand new scene, which
03:14 we renamed New Hire Orientation. We can rename this at anytime just by
03:18 double clicking this information at the top.
03:21 And inside the scene, you'll see each of the slides.
03:24 You'll also see how they're linked from one to the other.
03:27 So in this case as you can see we have from our untitled slide at the top,
03:31 options that take us to the new hire orientation.
03:34 Or over here on the right which looks like a quiz, and you might want to scroll
03:38 down to see the full length of this scene.
03:43 Lots of slides all in the right order, all numbered automatically.
03:47 And if wanted to make changes to any one of these slides, we simply double-click
03:50 the slide. I want to do this.
03:52 Let's double-click the very first slide so you can see what it looks like.
03:56 And next, we'll go up to the Design tab and choose Story Size.
04:00 From here, you'll see that it's actually using a 16-by-9 aspect ratio, one of the
04:06 presets that you can choose from here in Storyline, but that's based on the slide
04:10 size, as it was created in PowerPoint. So all that came across.
04:14 Let's click Cancel. Also you'll notice we have text boxes, we
04:19 have objects that came across. If you go up to the logo and try to click it.
04:25 You'll notice it's not selectable. It was part of the PowerPoint template or
04:29 master slide in the background, and that's the case here as well.
04:33 It's also in the background part of the master slide which we can edit of course
04:38 by simply changing views. So all of that comes across nicely here
04:42 in Storyline, and we're ready to continue.
04:45 Let's close up this untitled slide. We're back to story view, and now we need
04:50 to start thinking about getting organized.
04:53 In the next movie, we'll talk about creating separate scenes and inserting
04:57 slides into those scenes.
04:59

Inserting new scenes and slides
00:00 Whether you're creating a new E-learning project from scratch, or by importing
00:05 PowerPoint slides like we did in the previous movie, you might want to stay
00:08 better organized by splitting up your project into multiple scenes.
00:13 For example, our new higher orientation, as we look closely here in Story View
00:18 Contains a number of slides pertaining to the training.
00:21 And down the right hand side, a number of slides pertaining to the quiz.
00:25 So we created this in the previous movie. If you were following along with me,
00:29 you'll have what I have. If you skipped to this lesson, no problem.
00:32 You can get caught up by going to the chapter two folder of your exercise
00:36 files, and opening up Orientation0203. All right to split these up into scenes
00:41 the first step is to create the new scene.
00:43 To do that, we make sure that the home tab is selected up here in story view.
00:48 And click new scene in the scenes section here on the ribbon.
00:52 That creates a new untitled scene, and notice that its numbered with a two automatically.
00:56 Our first scene has a one in front of it. Also, we have a new blank slide inside
01:01 and the slides in this scene will begin with the number 2.
01:04 Notice in our new higher orientation scene, all of the slides begin with a 1.
01:09 And we really don't need this new untitled slide in the scene because we
01:13 have the slides already, here in our first scene, so let's.
01:16 Make sure it's selected by clicking it, press Delete on your keyboard, and answer
01:20 Yes to removing this slide. All right, so we have a new, untitled scene.
01:25 It's blank. You can rename it.
01:27 Let's double-click Untitled Scene and type in Quiz.
01:31 Press Enter, and it's been renamed. Now we just need to grab the slides and
01:36 move them over. If we double click this first slide on
01:39 the right hand side, we open it up in normal view and see that it's the
01:42 beginning of our quiz. And as we move down through the slides,
01:46 you can see there are a number of different questions.
01:48 Okay, that is exactly what we need. We can close up this tab to return to StoryView.
01:55 And make sure the first slide in the quiz is selected, scroll down to the bottom,
01:59 and hold down the Shift key while we click the last one, 1.24.
02:02 Notice all the slides in between are now selected, and we're ready to move them over.
02:09 We do that by going to any one of the selected slides, clicking and dragging
02:12 until we get inside the quiz box. And you'll see that little arrow pointing
02:17 from left to right, let go, and you've just created a new scene.
02:20 And actually, at first glance, it looks like it's disappear, but it is linked to
02:25 the new higher orientation. So, as we scroll down, you'll see it
02:28 appears below. our first scene and there's the arrow
02:31 linking the two scenes together. The linking you see here is all based on
02:36 the slide order in the Powerpoint presentation.
02:38 They are all linked to one another there, so when we import them, they are all
02:42 linked here as well. We'll talk more about linking a little
02:45 bit later on. For now though, we have our two scenes,
02:48 and we're now better organized, separating the training from the quiz if
02:53 we wanted to. We could go inside our first screen here
02:56 and split this up even further if we wanted to into different sections.
03:01 That's totally up to you how you like to stay organized.
03:04 But by using scenes we can then work on different sections at a time.
03:08 And if you're collaborated with others maybe one persons working on the quiz
03:11 while you work on training. It just makes it easier for everyone if
03:15 things are organized into scenes like we have here.
03:18 Alright, once you have scenes and slides, you might want to start inserting
03:22 additional scenes or rearraging slides and so on, we'll talk about that next.
03:27
Collapse this transcript
Rearranging slides and scenes
00:00 As your project begins to grow with multiple scenes and multiple slides, at
00:04 some point you may need to rearrange things.
00:07 Change up the order for example, the order that scenes appear in your project.
00:12 Or the slides within those scenes. So we're going to talk about rearranging
00:15 scenes and slides. And we're going to continue working with
00:18 our new hire orientation where we actually have two scenes.
00:21 Training portion, new higher orientation, and the quiz, a second scene that we
00:25 created earlier. Now if you've jumped to this lesson, need
00:28 to get caght up, you can open orientation0204 from your exercise files.
00:34 And continue with us from here. All we're going to do is add some new
00:37 scenes, because if we look at our new hire orientation, it's actually branching
00:41 off into three different areas. If we want to see what those slides are,
00:45 we can double-click then. For example, this one here, slide 1.4, is
00:49 the organization. >> We'll click story view, double click 1.8.
00:54 And you can see that's products. And if we go back to the story view tab
00:57 and click there, the third one, when we double click it, is marketing.
01:01 Ok, let's go back to story view. It might make sense if we're going to
01:05 have different groups of people working on.
01:07 These different groups of slides to put them into their own scenes.
01:11 So the first thing we need is three new scenes.
01:13 Let's go up to the home tab, make sure it's selected and new scene, Aand then
01:18 we'll do that two more times. So now we have, as you can see,
01:22 automatically numbered, scenes 3,4 and 5. If we scroll down scene 2, the second one
01:29 that we created earlier, is the quiz scene.
01:31 Really, if we go to one of our slides and look at the 4 options.
01:35 Let's go to slide 1.2 here, in our first scene, double click it.
01:39 You'll notice quiz should be the last option if we want to keep things neat and tidy.
01:45 All right, so we'll go back to story view.
01:46 And now we need to rearrange some things. We really want scene two to appear after
01:52 this last scene, which is currently numbered as scene five.
01:55 So all we're going to do is scroll down. Select the scene itself.
01:59 Don't click a slide thumbnail, just click any where inside the scene and you'll
02:02 notice the border that appears on the outside.
02:05 Now we're ready to cut this. We can click the Cut Button.
02:08 You can use Control X on your keyboard, or you could just go to the scene itself.
02:12 Right Click and choose Cut from there. However, you'd like to do it.
02:16 We're going to remove it, and now notice the renumbering that's happened here.
02:19 Scene five just became scene four. We're going to select that scene by
02:24 clicking inside the scene itself. Then right click and paste.
02:28 And look what happens. We actually now have quiz, the scene
02:32 quiz, as our fifth scene. Things have been reordered nicely.
02:37 All right, so we have scenes two, three, and four that we need to rename.
02:40 Let's double click scene two, which is untitled right now, and type in organization.
02:46 Press Enter to lock that in. And scene 3, that's going to be Products.
02:51 And when we double-click the fourth scene, we can type in Marketing there and
02:57 press Enter to lock it in. Right now it's just a matter of getting
03:00 the appropriate slides into the appropriate scene.
03:03 So let's go to our Product slides here Slides 1.4 all the way down to 1.7.
03:08 Hold down your Shift key to select all four of those slides and just drag them
03:12 up into organization. And you'll notice that we now have one
03:16 called organization showing up down below, automatically linked.
03:20 We also have this blank slide that we can click, press Delete on the keyboard.
03:25 And press Y on the keyboard or click the Yes button to remove it.
03:28 All right. Time to get the product slides in here.
03:32 Let's get rid of the empty slide first by selecting it with a click, press Delete,
03:36 and answer Yes. And now we'll go get our product slides,
03:40 1.4 to 1.7, hold down the Shift key to select them all And we'll drag him in
03:46 there inside products. Things seem to be disappearing, but
03:49 they're actually just linking down below. It's the automatic linking that came
03:53 across with the slides imported from PowerPoint.
03:56 And now, we have our last category here, for marketing.
04:00 I'll select it, and there's only three slides there, so shift and click the
04:04 third one and we'll move those inside Marketing.
04:07 And if we need to we'll select that blank slide by clicking it.
04:10 Hit delete on your keyboard, answer yes to remove it.
04:14 Okay, things are looking better organized now.
04:16 One problem I am seeing, it's hard to see with the tiny thumbnails, are the slides
04:21 in our first scene now which only contains three slides.
04:25 Lets go to 1.2 and double click it. You'll notice here we have a slide with
04:29 our four buttons or images that will link to the various scenes now.
04:34 If we go to the one below it, it really belongs above it.
04:38 So we can do that from here, we can click and drag slides to rearrange them.
04:41 Or we can go back to story view and do it right from within the scene 1.3 should go
04:46 up in between 1.1 and 2. So we click that thumbnail and drag it in between.
04:51 When you see that blue arrow appear in between the slides you can let go, and
04:55 you've just rearranged the slides, looks good.
04:59 So that's all there is to rearranging our scenes and our slides.
05:03 And when things are linked, we'll talk about triggers later on.
05:06 It's just easy to be able to have a bird's eye view of the various scenes in
05:10 your project. And if you're collaborating with other
05:13 people, it's very easy for them to concentrate on the slides that pertain to
05:17 them by separating them into their own scenes like we have.
05:20 So, everything's ordered properly, our slides, our scenes.
05:24 We're ready to move on.
05:25

Adding text
00:00 One of the most common functions you'll be performing here in Storyline is simply
00:04 adding text to your slides. There's a few different ways to do it.
00:07 So lets explore them now using our New Hire Orientation project that we've been
00:12 working on since the beginning. If you've jumped to this lesson and need
00:15 to get caught up. you can open up Orientation0205 from the
00:18 Chapter 2 folder of your Exercise Files. Next, we're going to insert a new slide
00:23 to work with. And we'll do it right here in our first scene.
00:26 Notice I have the first slide selected here in Scene 1, which is our new hire
00:31 orientation section or scene. Next, we'll go up to the Insert tab and
00:36 choose New Slide. And when you do this, you actually get to
00:40 choose from a number of different layouts, templates, and styles.
00:45 So if we go to Templates, for example, you'll see templates for top interactions
00:50 as well as character display panels. If we go to basic layouts you can see
00:54 some of the layouts that go with this set of slides.
00:57 Some of them don't have the information in the background that we're accustomed
01:01 to seeing in our presentation, which includes the company logo and color
01:05 scheme, et cetera, across the bottom. But we can choose any one of these, which
01:09 allow us to enter text using the placeholders that come with that
01:13 particular slides. So, for example, if we wanted a title
01:16 slide, we could go to it right here. Although it says Untitled Slide, this
01:20 just came across with the PowerPoint presentation we imported.
01:24 Also, there are some quizzing slides where we would be able to add some text
01:28 into the questions and answers, for example.
01:30 But let's go back to basic layouts and choose one that looks like a title slide
01:34 here, but also contains our background imagery and color coding.
01:39 So we'll select that and click Insert. And you'll notice it's automatically
01:42 inserted after the first slide, because the first slide was selected.
01:46 We need to move that by clicking and dragging it above the first slide.
01:49 It should be slide number one, when the arrow pops above the first slide, let go.
01:53 And you just reorder the slides, and now we can double-click it to add our content.
01:58 So, to get text in here, obviously, we can use the placeholder.
02:01 Where it says Click to add title, we'll click.
02:03 The formatting's taken care of for us. All we have to do is type it in.
02:06 Let's type in all caps, welcome, with an exclamation mark.
02:09 (SOUND) There we go. Now when we click down below we deselect
02:13 that place holder, the text box, and we have our title.
02:16 If we want some additional text here though, there's no placeholder for it.
02:19 We can insert our own text boxes. Let's do that.
02:22 Again with the Insert tab selected on the ribbon, you'll go to the text section
02:26 here and click text box. Now you have some options.
02:29 You can click anywhere and start typing. Or you can draw the box and then start
02:34 typing inside the box. If you want things to be centered one
02:37 little trick I like is to create a box that goes from the left side all the way
02:42 to the right side. I am going to do it from the left, around
02:45 the middle of the slide, across, and as soon I hit the right side and it snaps in
02:50 there, I'll let go. Now I know if I click the center button
02:54 up here for paragraph formatting, which now appears because I am working in a
02:58 text box. Ctrl+E is your keyboard shortcut.
03:01 Anything I type will definitely be centered on the slide.
03:04 So, let's type in new hire orientation. (SOUND) You can see the default formatting.
03:11 But all we have to do is click the edge of the box.
03:14 So let's go back to it. Click the edge of the box.
03:16 It's no longer a dotted line. It's a solid line all the way around,
03:19 which means, whatever options we choose for formatting will apply to the entire
03:24 contents of this text box. So let's bump it up a little bit.
03:27 We'll go into the font section here, bump it up.
03:30 I'm going to up to 16 points, I'm going to try 18, and go back down using
03:35 the Up and Down Arrows. Of course, we can click the drop-down
03:37 here and choose from any of these as well.
03:40 Maybe 18 is the better option. And then we can apply some attributes, if
03:44 want to try bolding that doesn't make sense.
03:46 We'll click bold again to turn it off. The shadow though is kind of cool.
03:50 Kind of brings it off the slide a little bit.
03:52 I like that. We can change other things.
03:54 Like the font color, if we wanted to. We could even highlight it with a highlighter.
03:59 I think it looks good the way it is. So we'll just click off to the side to
04:02 deselect the text box and get a good look at what we've created.
04:06 So adding text can be, in existing place holder, you can create your own text
04:11 boxes, have as many of them as you like on a slide.
04:13 And remember when you start to work with text, you get access to all of the
04:17 formatting that goes along with it.

Adding animation
00:00 One way to add some visual interest to your e-learning project is to animate
00:04 objects that appear on your various slides.
00:08 We're going to work with our welcome slide we created in the previous movie
00:11 here on our new hire orientation project. Now, if you've jumped to this lesson and
00:15 you need to get caught up, no problem. Go to the chapter two folder at the
00:18 exercise files and open up 0206 Orientation.
00:22 So here on the left hand side when we click the drop down under scenes we're
00:25 working on the new hire orientation scene.
00:28 The first slide is selected its our welcome slide.
00:30 You can double click it to open it up here in its own tab.
00:34 And we have our two text boxes that we're going to animate.
00:37 By default when we go to play this elearning project we're just simply going
00:42 to see the slide appear with the content. Down below is something called the timeline.
00:46 We talked about it when we toured the user interface.
00:49 What you're going to see down below, all of the objects that appear on the slide
00:52 on the timeline, and the slide itself. So when we start to do things like
00:57 animate objects, we can apply timings as well.
01:00 We're going to start with just the animation.
01:03 Let's go to the welcome text box. We'll click inside, and then we'll click
01:06 on the border when we see the four-sided arrow.
01:08 That select the entire object, which is what we want to animate.
01:12 To do that, we go up to the animations tab on the ribbon, and you'll notice the
01:16 first two sections here are for entrance and exit animations, so we can choose
01:22 what welcome's going to look like when it appears, and if we want it to disappear,
01:26 we can choose how it's going to disappear as well.
01:29 Let's just focus on entrance animations, the default is none.
01:34 But when we click this little drop down, you'll see things like fade, grow, fly,
01:39 spin, or spin and grow. So these are different effects that you
01:43 might be familiar with if you're a powerpoint user.
01:46 Let's say we want the word welcome to grow right in its place.
01:49 So, to start from nothing and grow up to this nice welcome message.
01:53 Let's choose grow, and when we do that, we get to choose how fast that happens.
01:57 It can be from a very slow grow to a very fast one.
02:02 Let's choose very slow, and where's it going to enter from?
02:05 It could enter from anywhere on your screen, the corners the sides or right
02:10 from it's current locations which is the default.
02:13 Click the drop down you'll see all these direction.
02:15 We'll leave it right in the center so it goes right in it's own place right there
02:20 to what we see now. Alright that's one animation.
02:23 You'll notice a start has appeared next to the object.
02:26 Box itself, indicating an animation has been applied.
02:30 Let's go to New Hire Orientation. Now, click inside, and we'll click the
02:33 border again to make sure all of it's selected, and we'll go up to our entrance
02:38 animation section, which is something different.
02:41 Let's experiment. Notice we get the same categories, Fade,
02:44 Grow, Fly, et cetera. But because this is a text box, I could
02:47 have multiple paragraphs and lines we can choose to have it be animated all at once
02:52 or by paragraph. Now really it doesn't matter.
02:55 It's a single line of text here so whatever we choose is going to be all at
02:59 once anyway. Let's try something different, like
03:01 flying in. We'll have it fly in all at once.
03:04 Select that. You see the star appear next to it
03:07 indicating animation has been applied. The defaults for speed, you can see, is medium.
03:12 Let's have that one move slowly and we'll have it enter from, well the bottom's
03:17 probably pretty good. So welcome will grow in place.
03:20 New hire orientation will fly in from the bottom.
03:22 I want to make sure that's selected by clicking it.
03:25 And down below, you'll see this little marker move across the timeline when we
03:30 go to preview this. There is a preview option for previewing
03:34 the slides and the entire project if you wanted to, but A quicker way to look at
03:38 the animations that have been applied is just to go down to the timeline itself
03:42 and click this little play button. Give it a click and you can see what
03:45 happens there it is new hire orientation flew up from the bottom.
03:49 Welcome appeared in its place it grew from nothing to what we see now.
03:54 And you also saw that marker moving across the timeline, so if we click the
03:58 Play button again, we'll see it all happen again.
04:01 So the animations are over within three seconds.
04:04 There's a couple extra seconds of default time applied to the slide before it moves
04:09 on to the next slide. Now these are all things, of course, that
04:12 we can adjust, not just the animations, but The timings for the objects that
04:16 appear on a slide, and the slide itself. So in the next movie we'll dig a little
04:20 deeper into the timeline.
04:22

Using triggers and timings
00:00 A very important part of any elearning project is the flow.
00:04 Which involves timings, timings for your objects and your slides, as well as
00:09 triggers for user input. We're going to talk about all of this now
00:13 in greater detail, as we continue working with our new higher orientation project.
00:17 If you've been following along we're on the first slide of our new higher
00:21 orientation scene. If you jumped to this lesson you can get
00:23 caught up, by going to the chapter two folder of the exercise files and opening
00:27 up Orientation0207.story. So with our welcome slide selected,
00:32 you'll notice down below the objects we see on the slide also appear here on the timeline.
00:38 If we click welcome, for example, down below, it's selected up here on our slide.
00:42 Same thing for new hire orientation. The only two objects that appear on the
00:46 slide, the rest is in the background. So because we're on the timeline, we can
00:50 adjust the timings for not only the objects but the entire slide itself.
00:55 We also have to talk about something called the player.
00:57 When users go to view this course when we're done there's a default player
01:03 that's used. It comes with buttons like a next or
01:06 continue button to go on to the next slide.
01:08 So, we'll talk about those and the triggers that appear over here on the
01:11 right hand side in a moment. Right now though, let's go down to our
01:15 timeline and adjust some things. For example, if we want this slide to
01:18 appear for longer than the default five seconds, we can go to the border.
01:22 When you see the double black arrow, anywhere along that border, click and
01:25 drag it out, and notice we can go as far as we want.
01:28 We can also zoom in our out on our timeline using this little slider here,
01:32 so if you want to be more precise, down to like, quarter of a second, for
01:36 example, drag it to the right. You're zooming into the timeline.
01:39 Or, you can zoom out as well by clicking and dragging to the left.
01:43 Now, notice the slide timing is adjusted, but the objects are not.
01:47 So if you wanted to adjust the objects, just select them.
01:50 You can click the first one, hold down Shift, and click the second one.
01:54 Now go to the border, there's a double white arrow for adjusting objects.
01:58 You can click and drag it all the way up to the right.
02:00 In fact we can push it past the border and make it a longer viewing time as we
02:04 release, we've set our new slide timing as well as the object timing.
02:08 But lets move those back to about four seconds.
02:12 That's the only way we can make these slide timing shorter.
02:15 Is to make our object shorter. Now we can go back to the slide, click
02:19 and drag it all the way back to four seconds.
02:22 So lets say in our scenario, because this is a Welcome Slide, with some animation
02:25 on it, we simply want this to appear for four seconds and move directly onto the
02:30 next slide, where we'll wait for some user input.
02:33 Well in that case, we need to adjust the triggers.
02:36 Triggers are based on user input. Clicking a button, clicking a object on
02:41 the slide for example or they can be based on the timeline down below.
02:45 As we move over to the right hand side in the trigger's panel here you'll notice
02:49 that the default trigger is a player trigger.
02:52 So the player, which has adjustments under the player button here.
02:56 Has it looks like a next button that the user will click to move on to the next slide.
03:02 Well, this is not really what we want. We wanted to move on to the next slide
03:06 after the four seconds are up. So we need to add a new trigger It's
03:10 better than editing the player trigger because when we go down here to the
03:14 buttons for creating a new trigger, you'll notice we get a trigger wizard
03:18 showing up where we can adjust actions, the slides, when this happens, objects et cetera.
03:24 Well, we do want to jump to the next slide, those two are already selected for
03:29 us when, when the time line ends. So we'll click the drop down and choose
03:33 timeline ends. For what, for any object on the slide or
03:38 for the slide itself? So we'll see both those objects, as we
03:41 hover over them they're highlighted in the background, or the entire slide?
03:45 So when the slide is finished with it's four seconds, it should automatically
03:49 move to the next slide. Let's select that and click OK.
03:53 Notice we have a new slide trigger now, and we no longer need the player trigger.
03:59 So we can select it by clicking once, going down to the bottom and clicking the
04:03 delete button to delete that player trigger.
04:06 We'll click Yes to confirm, and it's gone.
04:10 So now when we go to preview this, it should automatically jump to the next slide.
04:15 When we go the next slide, which will appear after those four seconds You'll
04:20 notice that there are some triggers here as well.
04:22 Jump to the next slide when the timeline ends is there but in this case we don't
04:26 want that. We want user input so clicking the view
04:29 training object should take people to that scene.
04:33 And taking the quiz should take them to a different scene and a different first slide.
04:38 So in this case, we don't need the slide trigger.
04:40 I'll click it and hit Delete. Confirm by clicking Yes.
04:45 We have a picture appears that has an unassigned trigger, so it's going to jump
04:49 to what slide when the user clicks take quiz, so we can assign this now.
04:55 By editing the existing trigger. You don't need to create a new one.
04:58 It's already there, click Edit. It's going to jump to the next slide when
05:02 the user clicks the picture. And the picture is the quiz picture.
05:06 As you can see it's highlighted or selected.
05:08 So, the slide needs to be selected. We'll click the drop down, and we'll go
05:12 to the quiz scene. And as we scroll down, there it is.
05:16 We want to go right to that first quiz slide.
05:19 So we'll select it and click okay. It's no longer unassigned.
05:23 You can see, automatically it's going to be going to the appropriate slide.
05:27 If we go to this next trigger and select it, the view training object is selected,
05:33 and it will go to the next slide, which is as you can see, our new hire
05:37 orientation which will take us to the actual training itself through various
05:42 links in the upcoming slides. So that's fine, and there's also a player
05:46 trigger here. If we click it, we don't see the player
05:49 until we preview, but We can also jump to the next slide by clicking the next button.
05:54 So we'll just leave that as is, looks pretty good.
05:56 So those are the triggers. So we have our first slide, not using any
06:01 input from our users or learners. Instead we're using our slide timings
06:05 that appear down below on our timeline. So, we're ready to Save this up and
06:10 Preview it to see if everything's going to work the way we want.
06:14 We'll do that next.
06:15

Previewing, working the player, and adding transitions
00:00 As you continue to build your elearning projects.
00:02 Adding additional scenes, slides, content, et cetera.
00:06 You'll likely want to take a peek at what it's going to look like for your
00:10 learners, at least periodically. So in that case, it's hand to know how to
00:15 preview your project. We'll also talk about the player itself.
00:19 And maybe add a little bit of flair to the slides along the way.
00:22 Let's continue working with our New Hire Orientation project that we've been
00:26 building throughout this chapter. If you jump to this lesson, need to get
00:29 caught up, you can go to the Chapter 2 folder and open up Orientation0208.
00:33 We're looking at the very first scene, which is our New Hire Orientation scene.
00:39 With the welcome slide selected. So, four slides in this scene.
00:43 And we've already been working with timings for example, how long this
00:46 slide's going to appear before it moves on to the next.
00:49 This would be a perfect opportunity to preview our project so far.
00:54 Well, with the Home tab selected if you go to the very far right in the Publish
00:58 section you'll notice there is a Preview button.
01:00 Clicking the button will By default preview your entire project that is every
01:06 scene and every slide. If you prefer just to preview a single
01:10 slide or maybe the scene then you go a little bit further down and click the
01:14 drop down button. From here, you can preview just the slide
01:18 using the keyboard shortcut as well, Ctrl + F12.
01:21 Or you can go down to This Scene to preview the four slides in this scene.
01:25 And there's the default down below. F12, the keyboard shortcut for the entire project.
01:30 Let's start with just this slide. We'll give it a click.
01:33 Now this allows us to preview the one slide that has those object timings and
01:37 animations, there we go, and by default after four seconds, according to our
01:42 timings, we should see the next slide. But we're not previewing the entire scene
01:46 at this point, just this one slide. The other thing we're previewing is the
01:50 player itself. Player has some buttons in the bottom
01:53 right for moving from one slide to the next, or back to the previous slide.
01:57 There's also a link in the top right hand corner where we can access resources.
02:01 The name of our project appears up here at the top.
02:05 There's also a volume button down at the bottom for adjusting volume.
02:08 And a side ball on the left hand side containing menu items.
02:12 If we were previewing our entire project we'd see every slide and every scene down
02:17 the left hand side. Maybe we don't want our learners clicking
02:20 the various slides to move, at their own pace.
02:23 We want them to follow a certain route. So in that case, we want to edit our
02:27 player, which we can do as well. Let's close this preview, and in this
02:32 case we want to preview all of the slides in this scene.
02:35 We'll go back to that drop-down and choose This Scene.
02:39 Now we're going to be preparing four slides.
02:41 There they are down on the left. There's our animations, there should be
02:45 an atomatic four-second timing. We can use our Next button, our Previous
02:49 button, if we wanted to those all work. There's our volume button.
02:54 We don't have any audio yet, but we'll keep it there.
02:57 Let's close the preview now by clicking Close Preview, and talk about the player,
03:01 because we may want to make some adjustments to the player itself.
03:04 We can do that from the same Publish section on the ribbon here.
03:07 Click the Player button. This will adjust the player for this project.
03:13 Notice the features is selected up here and down the left hand side we have
03:16 different tabs. We have options and they're all displayed
03:19 in a preview over here on the right hand side.
03:22 So if we don't the menu showing up in the sidebar we go over here to the player
03:27 tabs in the side bar section. Notice menu is checked off.
03:31 We can deselect it by clicking the checkbox.
03:34 Its gone from our preview that's what our.
03:36 Project's going to look like to our learners now.
03:38 Maybe we should have a glossary, though. We can put that in there.
03:42 We can see terms and definitions. Selecting a term in the glossary will
03:46 display the definition down below. It adjusts the size of the project display.
03:51 For example, the slide itself. And we can deselect that if we don't need
03:56 a glossary. Okay, looks pretty good.
03:59 Down below, we have some other features, like the title.
04:02 We can keep the title, but we could change the name that appears up there if
04:05 we wanted to. Let's type in New Hire Orientation.
04:10 And you can see the side bar itself appears on the left, and that's fine.
04:14 We can keep it there. Nothing's being displayed in the sidebar anyway.
04:18 There's our new title up at the top in our preview.
04:20 we do need a volume, eventually we will have audio but we can turn that on and off.
04:25 There's also something called the seek bar, I like this.
04:28 Click the seek bar, and users will have an ability now to Skim through the
04:34 content on a slide by using the slider that appears here next to the play button.
04:39 You can even replay things using the replay option.
04:43 And if you wanted to you could have your own logo appearing over every slide.
04:47 It's a great way to prevent copyright infringement.
04:50 Click the logo and then click to add a logo is the link you would go to to find
04:54 the logo and place it on your slide. We don't have one so we're going to
04:58 deselect that. The search option only appears if there's
05:02 something down the left hand side. So if we go back to the menu, for
05:05 example, we need that menu. Click the check box.
05:09 And now if we wanted to we could add the search functionality to that menu.
05:13 Notice it's available to us now. Clicking it displays it down the left at
05:17 the very bottom. I don't think we'll need that so we'll
05:20 deselect menu again. Search disappears along with that side bar.
05:25 And this is the player maybe that we want for this particular project.
05:29 If that's the case, we click okay. And those options are now saved as our
05:34 default player for this particular project.
05:38 So if we were to preview this, we would again get to see the new player And,
05:42 before we do that maybe we could add some flair to the slides themselves when they
05:46 move from one to the next. That involves going to Animations, and
05:50 then you'll see a Transition section. Transition to this slide, and in this
05:54 case, we're going to click the drop down. There are different categories.
05:57 We have some fades and dissolves. If you want to fade in from one slide to
06:01 the next we could do that using this option.
06:04 Or click the drop down and use some of the wipe options or the push and cover
06:08 options as well. So if you want the next slide to cover
06:11 the existing slide, you can see it can come from all different directions.
06:15 Let's have it come from the top. So cover down, we'll select it.
06:18 And we'll make it happen not so fast. Let's go to medium.
06:23 And apply to all of the slides. Notice when you hover over this there's
06:27 some information. You're going to be applying to all the
06:29 slides in the project. So not just this scene.
06:33 To preview that we don't need to back to the home tab.
06:35 There's a preview button right here. Click the drop down, and let's preview
06:39 this scene again. We'll give it a click.
06:41 Again, preparing four slides, there's our first one, there's that cover down animation.
06:45 The animation objects. You can see that happening, onto the next one.
06:49 There's a slide timing down below, but we can click view training to go to the next one.
06:55 We can use the previous and next buttons if we wanted to, and let's close the
06:59 preview to go back. So that's a quick look at how we can
07:02 preview our project along the way. Add some flair with slide transitions and
07:08 even adjust our player to suit our needs for any given project.
07:12

3. Using Assets and Elements
Adding images
00:00 It's time now to explore the different kinds of content, you can be throwing
00:04 into your elearning project here in Storyline.
00:07 We're going to begin with images. They say a picture's worth a thousand words.
00:11 Well, think of all the typing you can save yourself by inserting a few pictures.
00:15 That's what we're going to do right now. We're going to do so working with our new
00:18 higher orientation project here. And if you're following along with me and
00:22 have the exercise files You can close up whatever you have open right now, and
00:26 open up Orientation 0301. You'll notice that it opens up in story
00:31 view here, and there are a number of different scenes.
00:33 We're actually going to go to the product scene, Double-click the first slide,
00:37 labeled 3.1, and that'll take us into our normal view looking at that first slide
00:42 in this scene. So, indeed, these are the products that
00:44 we're going to be talking about in this particular scene.
00:47 If you go to the second slide, by clicking it, you'll notice we have
00:50 placeholders here for some images. All we're going to do is replace those
00:55 with the actual images themselves. Beginning with this mini panel.
00:59 The KECO mini panel product. So let's go get it.
01:03 All we do is click the Insert tab. From illustrations we're going to click
01:06 Picture, and then go browsing for the picture.
01:09 You'll find them in the chapter three folder of your exercise files.
01:12 There's the mini panel right there. Now double clicking's going to insert
01:16 this JPG file. You know it's a JPG when you hover over it.
01:19 But take a look down here at all the different formats you can ch oose from
01:22 when inserting graphics. they can be metafiles, there's the
01:26 Windows metafiles for example, JPGs, but PNG files as well, BMP, GIFs, and TIFFs.
01:32 They're all there, and if you wanted to filter down to a specific format, you can
01:36 do so by clicking it here on the list, like JPEGs.
01:38 All right, there's our mini panels, let's double-click it.
01:41 And it appears in it's original size. Taking up way too much room here.
01:45 So we're going to size it down. And just like any object in any other
01:48 program, like PowerPoint for example, we do see handles for sizing.
01:52 We can move from the center. We even see this little rotate handle at
01:56 the top. This little green circle at the top that
01:59 allows you to rotate images. Which we don't need to do at this one.
02:02 We just need to resize it. Let's go to the top right corner and when
02:05 you see the double diagonal arrow, click and drag down and in.
02:10 So we're going to go small enough that it's approximately the same size as the placeholder.
02:15 As we move it up into position, you'll see those guidelines helping you line
02:19 things up with other objects that are on this page, like the placeholder down
02:23 below for example. want to line it up on the left, and let go.
02:27 We can size it down a little bit further probably.
02:29 Just click in drag and if it goes too far, no problem, we'll drag it back out.
02:33 That's good right there. Now because it's still selected there are
02:36 a number of things we can do in the way of formatting this.
02:39 For example, if I wanted to, I could go to some of these picture styles.
02:43 And select something with a matte border or frame, for example.
02:47 Maybe that's too much. I can go to a smaller one, or maybe a
02:51 shadow around it. Lots of different options to choose from.
02:54 Just a matter of clicking them. If you don't like any of those, just go
02:57 to the first option, no style, that's where we started, and you can do things manually.
03:01 For example, in the Adjust section, we could adjust brightness.
03:04 Maybe it's a little too bright. We could bring it down.
03:07 Maybe we need to take a little contrast off of there as well.
03:11 If you don't like what you have, reset the picture.
03:14 Click reset and you're back where you started.
03:16 We actually need to make this a little brighter I think.
03:18 There we go. And a little more contrast.
03:21 That looks good there. We can recolor it if we wanted to add a
03:24 tint for example. We could change the picture altogether,
03:28 or we can use any of these picture styles.
03:30 But, to work on it in a customized fashion, we go a little further past
03:35 those styles. Or we can adjust the picture shape, for example.
03:38 Rectangular is what we really want, but there are all kinds of shapes to choose from.
03:43 The border itself, I'm going to click this border button.
03:46 You can see the default, it's about a 3-pixel black border around the outside.
03:50 Too much, I think. Let's click the dropdown now next to
03:53 picture border, where we can choose a different color if we wanted to.
03:56 Maybe like a dark green, and we can also go back to that drop down and adjust the weight.
04:02 Maybe that's a little too thick, lets try two pixels.
04:04 I like that better. You can also apply effects, so if we
04:08 wanted a shadow, we can choose a shadow from anywhere, like outside, inside and
04:13 perspective if we wanted to. As you hover over these, you do see a
04:16 live preview of what you're going to get if you make that selection.
04:20 I think the shadow that appears on the image behind is enough.
04:23 So we don't really need a shadow, at all. Let's just click on the slide somewhere.
04:27 Other effects include glows, reflections, soft edges if you wanted to soften it.
04:32 But I think the way our image looks now is pretty good.
04:35 So we'll just leave it like that. I'll just click anywhere off to the side
04:38 to close up any open menus. Now just a matter of getting the other
04:41 three in there. Let's go back to the Insert tab.
04:44 Go to Picture and let's get all three of them now.
04:47 That means the shower head, hold down your Control key, choose bulbs and choose
04:52 panels still holding down Control. Notice all three are selected.
04:55 We skipped over mini pals because we already have it.
04:58 And when we click open, all three will be brought onto the slide.
05:01 You don't see them all because they're overlapping because we moved them around.
05:06 You'll notice the other images in the background.
05:09 Alright so lets go to our shower head here on top, make sure it's selected and
05:13 size it down. And we'll move it into position.
05:16 Go to the top left corner, and we'll stretch it out.
05:20 So it covers that placeholder. If it doesn't quite get the edge, we can
05:23 stretch it out. Just pull from the middle right side,
05:27 there we go. It looks good.
05:29 Alright, how about our solar panel here. Select it and do the exact same thing.
05:34 And all of the effects that we apply to the mini-panels can also be applied to these.
05:39 It's just a matter of going through that same process, re-sizing, moving, and then
05:44 applying the special effects as needed. So once you have those all into position,
05:49 just click off to the side to see end-result.
05:52 Think they all need the border, so again, we can click while holding down the
05:56 control key, to select multiple images and do the exact same thing to all three
06:01 at the same time. So, go to the picture border, choose that
06:05 green, go back to picture border in the drop down and change the weight to two.
06:10 Deselect by clicking off to the right. And there's our finished product.
06:14 So adding those images really improved the look of the slide.
06:17 We could have text explaining them. But to be able to see them in an image
06:21 really helps. And adds some visual interest to your
06:23 elearning project.

Cropping and arranging images
00:00 In the previous movie, we inserted some images onto a slide here in our new hire
00:05 orientation project. We were able to do things like resize the
00:08 image, move it around, even customize its appearance somewhat with some borders and
00:13 some adjustments with brightness and contrast.
00:16 We can take it a step further and also get into some arranging, even cropping options.
00:20 And that's what we're going to do right now, so we continue working with our new
00:24 hire orientation project. Looking at Scene 3, the Product scene, on
00:28 Slide 3.2. If you skipped to this lesson, you can
00:31 get caught up by opening up Orientation0302 in the Chapter 3 folder
00:37 of those exercise files. So on this slide, for example, if we
00:40 wanted to remove those rectangles that appear in the background.
00:44 They were just there kind of to guide us or.
00:46 Where to place these, we don't really need them now.
00:48 They're taking up valuable space, so let's remove them.
00:52 While we can't see them because they're behind our images, we can see them a
00:56 couple of different ways. One option is to go down to the timeline.
00:59 As you add things to your slides, they appear on the timeline in order.
01:03 So the newest thing appears at the top. If we were to use the scroll bar to
01:07 scroll down the list of objects that appear on this slide, we'd eventually see
01:12 the rectangles down below. If you want to see more of your timeline,
01:16 go to the border. When you see the arrow just click and
01:18 drag it upwards. You can see more of your timeline.
01:22 Less of your slide content. Alright, let's say we don't need that
01:26 rectangle, rectangle 20. Select it, hit Delete on your keyboard.
01:29 It's gone, just like that. You don't really see a change, though, on
01:33 your slide. Another option is to move these items in
01:37 behind the rectangles. Let's select the first one, the mini panel.
01:40 Hold down control, and click the other three.
01:44 All four images are now selected. And if we want to move them in behind our
01:48 rectangles, well, we could go to the format tab up here on the ribbon, and go
01:53 to the arrange section. Using send backward, each time we click
01:57 it, it goes further down our list on our timeline.
02:00 Each object then now appears on top of that.
02:03 But if we wanted to do this quickly, click the drop-down and send it right to
02:07 the back. All four images will go to the back.
02:09 That means they are the oldest objects on our slide, and newer items like our
02:15 rectangles appear on top. So we can click off to the side to
02:19 deselect the images and select the rectangles now by clicking and holding
02:24 down the Ctrl key, while clicking the other two.
02:26 With the rectangle selected, hit delete on your keyboard, and they're gone.
02:30 So it's up to you how you delete objects from the timeline, or directly from the
02:34 slide itself. Let's adjust our timeline down now, so we
02:37 can see more of the slide, at least zoomed in.
02:41 So we're better able to tell what's on our slide.
02:43 All right, how about this image here of the energy bulb.
02:46 Wouldn't it be nice if we could zoom in a little bit more on the bulb itself and
02:50 less of the person? No problem, we can do that.
02:53 Let's first select the image itself. Now if you wanted to zoom in.
02:57 Let's go the view tab here. And let's zoom with the zoom button to
03:03 about, let's say, 200%, and click OK. This allows us to see the image better,
03:08 and there's some bulbs here. We want to crop off some of this image
03:12 and focus in on he bulb, so with it selected, we'll go back to the format tab
03:16 now on the ribbon, and we'll go over to the size group now, and click crop.
03:22 Now, you'll see cropping handles, so we can start cropping from the corners, from
03:26 the edges. Let's go to the top left corner, click
03:30 and drag in Now if you want to restrain this so it keeps the same aspect ratio,
03:35 try holding your shift key down. So go down a little bit from there, let
03:39 go of the mouse first, now go down to the bottom left corner, hold down your shift
03:44 key, click and drag up. Now we're just seeing the bulbs
03:48 themselves, and a hand. That's probably all we need right there.
03:51 To finish this, just click off to the edge here, outside, and you can see we've
03:55 resized this image. Now it's smaller than the others and it
03:58 needs to be moved into position. Again, as we move over we're going to see
04:02 those guidelines popping up. When we see the left is lined up,
04:06 beautiful, we can let go an go down to the bottom right corner.
04:10 And resize this until we see those guidelines appear indicating we're lined
04:15 up with the bottom of the one beside us. Let's drag it out from the right side
04:20 until it's lined up with the one above. And of course the other option is to
04:24 select these and input a specific size in pixels.
04:27 We can enter the values here if we wanted each one of them to be the exact same size.
04:33 I think we're good with everything aligning up.
04:35 Now we're looking at the bulbs, not so much the person holding those bulbs.
04:39 We go back to the View tab. Let's go back to zooming out so that
04:42 everything fits our window, choose Fit to Window.
04:45 That's the quickest way to get everything on screen and visible.
04:49 There, that looks much better. So, all of those adjustments are a simple
04:52 matter of selecting the image you want to adjust and using the Format tab.
04:56 Keeping in mind, that we have all of these options up here under the arrange
05:00 and size groups on our ribbon. Deselect by clicking off to the edge and
05:05 you'll want to save your changes before moving on.
05:07

Using built-in characters
00:00 Sometimes it's nice to get a little help getting your point across.
00:04 And one option here in Storyline is to use characters.
00:07 They're built in, both photographic and illustrated.
00:10 We'll take a look at those now as we continue working on our new hire
00:13 orientation project. Let's go to scene three, slide 3.3.
00:19 And here you can see we have our Mini panel.
00:21 And some empty space where we might want to insert one of those helpful characters.
00:25 Let's start by going to the insert tab. From here, we'll go to the illustrations
00:31 section and you'll notice character has a drop down button.
00:34 Give that a click, and you'll see the two categories illustrated more cartoonish
00:39 and photographic. These are actual photographs of people
00:42 you can use. If we take a peek at photographic for a second.
00:46 You'll see one of the characters you get installed with Storyline.
00:51 And you don't see a whole lot more, except for a link here in the top
00:55 right-hand corner to go and get more characters.
00:57 So, not a lot is installed by default for you, but you have access to many, many
01:02 characters, with, as you can see, different poses, different perspectives,
01:07 and so on. We're going to close this up and go back
01:11 to our Characters drop-down, and go to Illustrated, where you will see more options.
01:17 First of all, look at all the characters to choose from men, women, different
01:22 poses, different age groups. Lots to choose from here.
01:27 And we're going to go with this one female eleven.
01:31 And over here on the right hand side with that character selected, we can choose
01:35 our perspective. Now, because our product is going to be
01:39 to this person's right, let's select right.
01:42 And before we actually insert this person, let's go back to the top.
01:46 Because we can choose an expression, you can see talking.
01:50 Happy, neutral, how about surprised. I like that one, and we can also choose a pose.
01:57 When we go to Pose, you can see hands out goes with surprise, but there are other options.
02:02 And if we only wanted one hand out, we could go with that option.
02:06 A little further down, Pointer 3, I like that one.
02:11 Actually, Pointer 2 is probably pointing directly at the image of our solar panel,
02:15 so let's go with that. Now we can click Insert, and the
02:19 character will be inserted onto the slide.
02:21 Just like any other object, we see handles and we can move them around.
02:25 I'm going to place her down here. We can resize, just go to any one of the
02:31 corners to Click and Drag to create a larger character, for example.
02:38 And once we have the character in here of course we can make adjustments after the fact.
02:42 The ribbon contains a design and a format tab.
02:46 Design really applies to the character itself.
02:49 So for example, if we want to change the character to someone else we can do that
02:53 quite easily. Lets click again to keep the same character.
02:58 Want to change the expression, I'm thinking maybe talking would be better
03:01 than surprised. And the pose can also be changed, there's
03:05 the options with the pointer. Let's go to the thumbs up this time.
03:11 And change the perspective if we wanted to.
03:13 It doesn't make sense to choose anything other than side right, I like that option.
03:17 Alright, so that's our character many different options to choose from here in
03:22 Storyline for inserting a character. Now, next you might want to have that
03:26 character saying something. It could be done with audio or what we're
03:30 going to do next is take a look at inserting a balloon.
03:34 A comment can be added using text we'll do that next.
03:37

Adding text balloons
00:00 Quite often, when working with characters in your Storyline project, like the one
00:04 we inserted in the previous movie. You'll also be working with speech
00:09 balloons or what we might call a caption. And that's what we're going to focus in
00:12 on now as we continue working with our slide here, containing our character.
00:16 To make this person actually speak, well, yes, we could use audio, something we'll
00:20 talk about later or we could put in a text balloon.
00:23 Let's do that by going up to the Insert tab, and from here, in the Illustration
00:28 section, right next to our character's drop-down, is Caption and we can click
00:32 that to choose the shape of our balloon. Let's go with the rounded one.
00:37 Notice, there's also a thought balloon down below, so the person wouldn't
00:40 actually be saying anything, but rather thinking it.
00:43 Let's go with this one here, with the actual caption pointer, select it, and
00:48 now, it's just a matter of drawing it. Let's draw a nice big one over here in
00:51 this empty space. Click and drag, don't worry about where
00:54 it's pointing to quite yet. And release.
00:56 Now, we can down to the actual point. Notice the handle's yellow, and when you
01:01 hover over it, your pointer on your mouse changes to this little arrow, meaning you
01:05 can now click and drag. We're going to move this over so that it
01:08 looks like it's coming directly from the person on the left-hand side, our
01:12 character, and we release. And we've adjusted the balloon.
01:16 Now, to get something inside there. Well, you'll notice that, when we select
01:20 a balloon like this or create one, we have a format tab.
01:23 And clicking it, displays the insert shape section on the ribbon, which
01:28 includes a text box. And we could do this separately, could
01:31 use a keyboard shortcut Control T or just simply select Text Box from here, and now
01:36 click and drag to draw your text box. You'll want to get it inside the balloon.
01:41 Click and drag, and when you release, you're ready to start typing.
01:45 Now, if you already have the text, you can also copy and paste it.
01:48 I have some copied. I'm going to paste it using Ctrl + V on
01:52 my keyboard, and you can see the text here appears just as it was in black, and
01:56 it's a little too big for the balloon right now, so there's some adjusting to do.
02:00 Obviously, if you were typing this out, and you can go ahead and do that now, you
02:04 would actually have to change the size of the type or adjust the balloon.
02:08 Well I'm going to adjust the size of my text box a little bit.
02:11 I'll stretch it out, using the handles on the left and the right.
02:14 And if I tried to drag this up, well, obviously it's not going to fit.
02:17 So I'm going to click the border with the four sided arrow, and I'm going to bump
02:21 my font size down by going up to the shrink font button.
02:25 Each click brings it down a few points. And when I get down to about 10.5, it
02:29 looks like that's going to fit. All I have to do is maybe stretch out the
02:32 text box a little more and everything fits nicely inside the balloon.
02:37 Of course, we can change the formatting of our text and the balloon.
02:40 Let's leave the text as black. Let's go to the balloon, select it, and
02:45 go up to the Format tab. And now, you can see a number of Shape
02:48 styles to choose from when we click on the drop down.
02:50 Some of them are much lighter on the inside.
02:53 Let's go to one with a green border but white on the inside.
02:57 And select it. It's a Subtle effect.
02:58 You can see it's applied now, kind of matches the border around our object over
03:02 here on the right. The actual Solar Panel.
03:04 Ad it goes better with the slide itself. Another thing we can do is adjust the character.
03:09 Go to the character select it, go to that format tab, next we'll go to crop.
03:14 And if we don't need the entire person, maybe just they're upper body, we can go
03:19 down to the bottom handle in the center, drag that up and release.
03:23 Now we can click outside the selected object.
03:25 Now we can make her bigger. So select.
03:28 Click and drag one of the handles. Move her around a little bit.
03:32 And if you do that, you might have to adjust the balloon as well.
03:34 I'm going to make her nice and big. Select the balloon.
03:37 Go the point and just drag it down a little bit.
03:41 Let's click off the slide, off to the side to deselect anything to see the end
03:45 result a little clearer. That looks pretty good.
03:48 That's characters, text balloons and text boxes inside those text balloons.
03:54

Working with states
00:00 Any object you place on one of your slides in Storyline can exist in multiple
00:05 states, and the state can change based on triggers.
00:08 It could be a user clicking or hovering, or it could be based on the timeline.
00:13 We're going to explore states now, as we continue working with our new
00:16 higher-orientation project here. And if you've been following along with
00:19 me we're in the third scene looking at slide 3.3 where we have our character we
00:24 have our caption with text. Now it's time to work with states.
00:27 If you jump to this lesson need to get caught up go to the chapter three folder
00:31 of your exercise files and open up orientation 305.
00:35 Now, from here, the first thing I'd like to do is make this balloon caption, and
00:40 the text inside, one single object. That way, we can work with it as one
00:44 object as opposed to two separate objects, so we'll click inside the text.
00:48 Next, we'll hold down the shift key, and as we click the border of the balloon
00:51 here, they're both now selected. And if we go down to our timeline, I'm
00:55 going to stretch it out by going to the border here and dragging it up, so I can
00:58 see more of my timeline. Those two are selected.
01:01 I want to group them together so that means going to the Format tab at the top
01:05 over to the Arrange section, click group, and from the drop-down select group again.
01:10 It's now one single object by default name group 1.
01:13 You can see it's highlighted. I think this should only show up a few
01:16 seconds into our slide so lets go to our left-hand side of our selected group 1
01:21 object here, and we see that double wide arrow.
01:24 Click and drag it to the right, we'll go to about two seconds let's say.
01:28 So when this slide appears, we won't see the text in the caption.
01:33 It won't appear for a couple of seconds. So now we're going to work with states
01:37 with our character. Our character should be facing us and
01:40 then switch to this view when the balloon appears.
01:42 So we'll select the character, and now it's time to create a separate state that
01:46 will change. Let's go to the states tab down here next
01:50 to our timeline tab. Notice we have our one normal states,
01:53 that's all there is. Any of the objects on the slide have a
01:56 single state to begin with, but when we click edit states, we can add new states,
02:01 we can copy the existing state and make changes to the existing state as well.
02:05 So with normal selected let's go up to the design tab that appears on our ribbon
02:10 now, under character tools, and change the perspective to facing us, or front.
02:17 Perfect, now we'll add a new state by clicking the new button.
02:21 We'll change the name from new state to facing caption.
02:24 Click add, and we add our new state down below now.
02:28 And we can change the perspective to facing right.
02:32 So let's go up to the perspective drop down and choose side right.
02:35 It looks good. Alright so we have our states, now we
02:39 need a trigger that's going to change our state so let's click the Done Editing States.
02:44 We have to do that before we can access our triggers over here on the right.
02:47 So the trigger for this character is going to be the appearance of our caption.
02:51 Let's go to triggers. You may need to expand it by clicking the
02:55 arrow, and add a new trigger. So there we go.
02:57 What's the action? When we click the dropdown, we actually
03:01 want the one at the very top, which is to change the state of our character.
03:04 Change state of which object, click the drop-down and choose character 1.
03:09 Notice as we hover over it, she's highlighted or selected.
03:13 We wanted to facing the caption, that's the only other state to choose from under
03:17 custom here. And then, when is that going to happen?
03:20 Not when someone clicks. Let's click the dropdown.
03:23 We actually want the timeline when it starts for our caption, so time starts,
03:28 and the object is our caption. There it is, caption 1, the oval caption.
03:33 It's kind of highlighted in the background.
03:35 We select it and click OK. So that means that once this balloon with
03:40 our text inside appears on our slide, our character should change states to facing it.
03:45 To test this out, we'll go back to the timeline tab and click our little play
03:49 button down below. Let's see what it looks like.
03:51 So I'll just take to a moment to generate there's the first couple of seconds
03:54 notice you change to face the caption when the text appears.
03:58 That's just a small example of how we can change states with objects on the slides.
04:02 We can use queues and audio to change the state of the character, expressions.
04:08 We're simply changing the perspective on a single object.
04:11 But think about all the things you could do by changing states here in Storyline.
04:16

Creating and editing buttons
00:00 Another element you might want to add to slides here in Storyline, which will add
00:04 some interactivity to your elearning project, are buttons.
00:07 We're going to explore those now, as we continue working with our new higher
00:11 orientation project, but we're going to switch scenes.
00:13 So we'll click the Scenes drop down and go to new higher orientation.
00:17 And select the last slide in the scene 1.4, which as you can see already have
00:21 some text objects here, which kind of act like buttons.
00:25 Selecting any of these you'll see that actually allows us to jump to a slide if
00:29 we wanted to. And we can assign which slide they go to
00:32 or scene, but we can also add real buttons.
00:35 These are graphics that we can assign actions to.
00:38 Notice there's a note here that came from the PowerPoint slide to add continue and
00:42 website buttons once we're inside Storyline.
00:45 So we've imported our slides, we're in Storyline.
00:47 That means we no longer need this text box.
00:49 Let's go down to the timeline and find it there.
00:52 By clicking Note, Add continue in website, notice it's selected, and we can
00:58 hit Delete on the keyboard to remove it. Now it's time to insert the buttons, so
01:02 let's do that by clicking the Insert tab. From here, we'll go to the interactive
01:06 objects section and choose the button drop-down.
01:09 There are a couple of preset default formatted buttons to choose from here,
01:13 which we can change up. There are also check boxes and radio
01:16 buttons, which you'll save for later. Let's just go with the first one here,
01:20 button one. Now it's a matter of clicking and
01:22 dragging on our slide to place the button.
01:25 So, we'll create it by clicking and dragging about halfway under
01:28 organization, and halfway between organization and the graphics at the
01:33 bottom of our slide. Drag across, down, and release.
01:37 That's a good size button. It'll make it easy to work with.
01:40 We can resize it layer if we want to. But for now, you'll notice, the format
01:44 tab has appeared up here on the ribbon and tehre are a lot of options for
01:47 formatting our button. Starting with the icons that you see here.
01:51 If you want, you can have an icon inside. If this is our continue button, we could
01:55 click and arrow, for example, to represent continue.
01:58 We could also add text. We'll do that in a moment.
02:00 If you don't like that icon remove it, try a different one.
02:03 Click the drop down. Look at all the categories to chose from
02:06 here Navigation > Help. There's office and media.
02:09 As we go all the way down to, for example Industry.
02:14 Look at the last one, a globe. Okay, maybe this'll be our website button.
02:17 We'll click that a click. It's inserted in there.
02:19 And if we want text as well, all we have to do is right click our object and
02:23 choose Edit Text from the pop-up menu. Now, we temporarily see the icon, but
02:29 trust me, it's there. Let's type in Visit out blog, like so.
02:35 Okay, we'll click outside the object now, on our slide, and notice we have the icon.
02:41 It's still there alongside our text, beautiful.
02:44 Now what does this button do? Well, it should take us to our blog.
02:47 So let's select it again. We get all of the formatting options
02:50 appearing across the top. And the very first section is what
02:54 happens when it's clicked, the action section.
02:56 So let's click that. Right now, you'll see things like jump to
02:59 slide, for example, whatever was used last.
03:02 If we click the drop down though, we could do something like jump to a URL or
03:06 a file. Let's choose that.
03:09 Now we can put in the file, the location. Notice that we have a little load file or
03:13 browse button. We can also check a website if we type it in.
03:17 We have browser options as well that we'll talk about.
03:20 But for now, let's enter the following website http://blog.kineteco.net/.
03:31 If you wanted to check this we can put the check mark the launch our browser to
03:35 make sure that this is a viable website. The other thing we can do is choose our
03:38 browser options. What happens when people click this
03:40 button Let's click that. You can see right away, up at the top for
03:44 example, in the window it's going to display in a new browser window.
03:48 So if their browser's already open, they're not going to lose what they're
03:50 looking at. Get a new browser window.
03:52 I like that default. Browser controls, you can see are set to
03:56 default, but if you wanted to you could have no address bar and no browser
04:00 controls, just display the website Default's always good.
04:03 Same thing for window size, but if you wanted it to be full screen or a custom
04:07 size, you could do that as well. I kind of like the default again.
04:11 We'll leave it as is and click Save. So, that's going to happen when?
04:14 When the user clicks this button. Notice as we click the drop down, we
04:18 could have it as a double click, a right click, it could be based on the timeline,
04:23 or other events, and these are other triggers.
04:26 But we're going to leave it when the user clicks that button.
04:30 Click okay, and there it is. Alright and so, if we wanted that and
04:34 another button, the continue button, all we have to do is copy and paste this one.
04:39 Let's use our keyboard, Ctrl + C and then Ctrl + V is going to paste it, and now we
04:45 can move this one over to the right. And if we wanted to, can make sure it's
04:49 lined up with the other button, horizontally.
04:52 Place it over here to the right between marketing and quiz.
04:55 Those little guidelines will always help you to make sure things are lined up.
04:59 Here's the tops, I like that. Right there, and now it's just a matter
05:03 of editing this one. First of all, we can remove the icon,
05:06 maybe add a different icon if we wanted to.
05:09 This is going to be our continue button. And change the text.
05:12 So let's right click, edit, text. Click and drag over it, now let's type in continue.
05:18 And when we click outside we see the arrow, and the word continue, select the
05:24 button again because we need to change up the action as well.
05:27 So, we go to the When Clicked button, it's not going to jump to a URL, it's
05:31 just going to simply jump to the next slide, or if you prefer, Jump to Scene.
05:37 But by choosing Jump to Slide, we can choose Next Slide, whatever the next
05:41 slide is, by default. You could be specific and choose a slide,
05:45 like 2.1, when the user clicks, and click OK.
05:50 There we go, the only way to test these out is to actually publish it.
05:54 So if we wanted to preview this, we could click the Preview drop-down and choose
05:59 this slide, for example. You get to see what the slide looks like
06:02 inside the player. And if you were to click this you're
06:06 going to see this little message saying it's not active while previewing.
06:09 You need to publish this to make sure it works, same thing for continue.
06:12 Okay, let's close the preview, and talk about formatting these buttons.
06:17 Now that we them both in here, let's click the first one, hold down your shift
06:21 key and click the second one. And we'll go up to the Format tab now,
06:24 and notice some of the button styles you can choose from.
06:27 If this color and formatting doesn't really match your slide, no problem.
06:31 Just go in here and change it. Click the drop-down.
06:34 Maybe you want to go to a green color, for example.
06:37 I like that one there, Button Style 2, Accent 3.
06:40 That's matching the slide a little better.
06:42 We could adjust some of the Button Fill options, for example, if we want to go to
06:47 a gradient, choose something lighter. As you hover over these, you get a
06:51 real-time preview of what it's going to look like.
06:53 These are a little bit too light for our white text, so we'd have to change our text.
06:58 Some of these are okay, if a little bit too dark.
07:00 I kind of like what we had right from the style drop down.
07:04 So, we don't need to change the gradient here, but you can choose colors,
07:07 pictures, even textures if you wanted to. These are kind of cool but I think what
07:12 we have is fine. So let's just click anywhere outside to
07:15 close that up. We can add effects as well.
07:18 Maybe we can raise this off the page a little more by going down to shadow and
07:22 choosing something a little more drastic. With some of these shadow options you'll
07:27 get the three dimensional effect. You can also use prospective shadows.
07:31 I kind of like this one here. I'll give it a click, deselect by
07:35 clicking off the slide to see the end result clearly without any selection handles.
07:39 That looks pretty good. So all we need to do now is save our changes.
07:42 We have a couple of buttons that will help are users navigate and go to a
07:47 separate browser and visit our blog if necessary.

4. Working with Media
Adding background audio
00:00 Your e-learning project can get very interesting when you start to add things
00:04 like media. We're going to begin by inserting some audio.
00:09 We'll do some audio that's triggered by a user's click.
00:12 We'll also add some background music to add some interest to some of our slides.
00:17 So lets begin with our New Hire Orientation Project here by switching scenes.
00:21 We're going to go to the product scene. Click the drop down and choose the third
00:25 scene products. And then click the last slide, which is
00:28 our testimonial slide. If you jumped to this lesson, you need to
00:31 get caught up, you can go to the Chapter 4 folder and open up Orientation0401, and
00:36 here you can see there's actually some instructions down below to click text or
00:39 photo to play audio. So we want to make these objects that can
00:43 be clicked. And the best thing when I see an
00:46 instruction like text or photo, is to take both elements and combine them into one.
00:51 So that's where we're going to start. You can do it from down below if we
00:54 wanted too. Click text or photo.
00:57 As you can see on the timeline is text box, as we scroll down, there's Cecilia,
01:01 and select that. And then hold down your shift key and
01:04 click the photo as well, so both items are selected.
01:07 And we're going to group them together. Something we've done already.
01:10 Click the format tab at the top. Click group on the arrange section on the ribbon.
01:15 Click group again and it's now one object that can be clicked.
01:19 So we know users or learners will click this to hear the audio testomonial We
01:23 need to go get that audio before it can be a clickable trigger.
01:27 So, let's just click off to the side here, to de-select anything.
01:30 Go to the Insert tab, and here's where we find sounds.
01:34 Under the Media section, click the drop down, you'll see there's two choices here.
01:38 Could be a file that already exists, or it could a file directly from your mike.
01:44 Let's start with sound from file. Next, we'll go to the Chapter 4 folder of
01:48 your exercise files and find the Cecilia Testimonial.
01:52 There it is Notice that sound files can be MP3s, WAVs.
01:55 There's M4A, as well. You can see AAC, AIFF, so all kinds of
02:02 options here for sound files. I like the MP3 format because it's such a
02:06 small file size. So, we'll select Cecilia, click open, and
02:12 you'll see that actually inserts it right there at the top of our sound line.
02:16 It's called sound 1. Now, we're going to have multiple sounds
02:18 on this slide, so I like to change the name.
02:20 Where you see sound 1, just double-click. Highlight sound 1 and we'll type in
02:25 Cecilia And enter locks again. Okay.
02:30 We also see this little icon representing the audio the speaker here which will not
02:35 appear on the slide it's off the edge. That's perfect but we need a trigger now
02:40 so we want every time somebody clicks this object.
02:43 Which is text and photo together combined.
02:46 We want something to happen. So we're going to go to our triggers now.
02:49 We're going to click, New Trigger. From here we want to play media so make
02:54 sure under the media section you select play media.
02:57 What media? Click the drop down to choose.
03:00 There it is Cecilia down at the bottom under audio.
03:03 When the user clicks, and group one's already selected, that's why it appears
03:07 as our object. But we can click that dropdown and make
03:09 sure we select the correct object. So when we click okay, we know now that
03:15 anytime somebody clicks this object they're going to hear the correct audio.
03:19 Let's test it out. We'll do that by previewing just this slide.
03:23 We'll go up to the publish section on the ribbon, click the dropdown and choose
03:26 this slide. >> And when the slide appears, we can
03:30 now test this out. It says click text or photo to play audio.
03:33 As we move over the photo here, you can see we can click it.
03:38 >> To see the faces of our customers when we first turn on the solar system
03:42 and watch the meter go backwards, it is such a happy moment.
03:46 And it makes me very proud. Click close preview, and you're back.
03:51 Now if you're not happy with the audio quality, there are some adjustments you
03:54 can make. Let's click the speaker icon and with
03:57 that selected, click options at the top. It appears under sound tools.
04:01 Now this also appeared when we first brought it in.
04:03 We can preview the audio from here. Just listen to the audio not by clicking
04:07 the Object on our slide, but we can also adjust the initial volume.
04:11 If you thought that was a little bit loud, you could start it lower by
04:15 choosing Low. You could even go higher if you wanted
04:18 to, or mute it altogether, but choose Low.
04:20 There's an audio editor. We don't really need this, but if we want
04:23 to record, import, and edit our audio using the audio editor, we could click there.
04:28 We could change the sound to something else, export it to another format and
04:32 Preview directly from here as well if we wanted to.
04:36 Alright so that's the one testimonial. In your Exercise Files is another audio
04:40 file for our testimonial from Ron over here.
04:44 If you want to practice this, go ahead and change this photo and text into a
04:48 single object. By grouping them together, and assign the
04:52 audio trigger to hear the farmer's testimonial when the user clicks the
04:57 photo or the text. That's your homework.
04:59 For now though, we're going to go back to our very first slide in this project.
05:04 So, let's click the drop-down go to new hire orientation scene one, and make sure
05:08 the first slide has selected our welcome slide.
05:11 Another option is to add some background audio, like music for example.
05:15 So in that case, again, we'll go to the insert tab, we'll go to sound under
05:20 media, and choose sound from file again, in the Chapter 4 folder is where you'll
05:25 find intro music. I'll select that, and click open.
05:29 So it imports the audio file, again we see the speaker icon down below, it's selected.
05:33 That's why we're looking at options here for sound tools And in this case there is
05:38 no trigger we just want this to play when the slide starts.
05:41 Over here on the right hand side its not a user trigger its really just a trigger
05:46 based on the slide itself. We'll create a new trigger play media
05:50 click the drop down. Its sound one we haven't changed the name
05:53 down there on the timeline. When the timeline starts is the default, perfect.
05:58 And you can see it's the timeline for our Object, Welcome.
06:01 All you have to do now is click OK. want to preview that, let's go our
06:07 Preview dropdown and preview the slide, give it a click, and once it's opened up
06:13 on our screen, we'll hear the audio as soon as we see the slide.
06:17 (MUSIC) Can close the preview when we're done and again, if we wanted to adjust
06:30 the audio file itself, click the speaker icon.
06:33 Click the Options tab, and adjust things like.
06:35 The volume, for example. I think it could be higher when we launch
06:38 this entire project. All right, so save your changes if you
06:42 want to. Go back to the product slide and add the
06:45 farmer testimonial. If you want to practice this.
06:47 But for now we're ready to move on to recording your own audio, that's coming
06:51 up next.
06:51

Recording narration
00:00 Another way to add audio to your e-learning project is to simply record it yourself.
00:05 Of course, you'll need a microphone connected to your computer, and if you
00:09 want to hear what you're recording, you'll need speakers to play it back.
00:12 If you're set up that way, you can follow along here with our new hire Orientation
00:17 project, looking at the very first slide of scene one, which is our new Hire
00:21 Orientation scene. If you've jumped to this lesson, you can
00:24 get caught up by going to the Chapter4 folder of the exercise files, and opening
00:28 up Orientational 402. We already have one audio clip that
00:32 appears here on the background of this slide.
00:35 It's our intro music, now we're going to add our own narration.
00:38 To do that, we go back to the Insert Tab over to the Media Section, click the
00:43 Sound drop-down, because from here, you can chose Record Mic.
00:47 When you select this, it actually opens up the Record Microphone dialog.
00:52 You can see there is no audio currently. There's the record button when you're ready.
00:55 And when we're done recording, we'll simply click Save.
00:59 But before we get there, notice that we have an icon here representing the audio editor.
01:03 That's what we're in right now basically. There's also a little icon representing a
01:07 narration script, so if you prefer to read what you're going to narrate, go
01:11 ahead and click this, and then just simply type in what it is you want to say.
01:16 It's a great way to make sure you get things right the first time, so I'm
01:19 going to type in the following. Hi and welcome to kinetECO New Hire Orientation.
01:32 We're so happy to have you on board. There we go.
01:39 We'll keep it short and sweet for the sake of time.
01:41 So we'll just leave that open while we record.
01:43 And it's just a matter of recording it with the record button and saving it when
01:47 we're done. When you're ready, go ahead.
01:50 Hi and welcome to kinetECO New Hire Orientation.
01:54 We're so happy to have you onboard. We click the Save button.
01:59 Everything's saved up and a new speaker icon appears next to our slide down
02:03 below, you'll see it's slide 2. When we start getting into multiple
02:07 sounds like this, we might want to consider naming them.
02:10 So I'm going to double click Sounds 2, and I'm going to type in Narration, maybe
02:15 add welcome to it, and press Enter. Sound 1, we added in a previous movie.
02:21 It's our intro music. So if you wanted to, you could
02:24 double-click that one as well. And type in Intro music, so we don't get
02:28 them confused. Okay, so if we want to hear that, play it
02:33 back, we just select the icon or select it from the timeline, go up to Options,
02:36 and click Preview. Hi, and Welcome to kinetEco New Hire Orientation.
02:44 We're so happy to have you onboard. Sounds pretty good.
02:47 Of course, we can do things like we did with other clips we've added, adjusting
02:50 the volume. If we go to the Audio Editor, giving it a
02:53 click, you can see it actually opens up a full-blown editor where we can adjust,
02:57 not just the volume but levels and so on. We can play things back.
03:01 We can trim, so if we have a little bit of dead air at the beginning or end, we
03:05 can trim that off. So we'll just close that up for now and
03:09 know that it's there if we need it. And if we wanted to as well we could
03:12 preview this slide. I'm going to preview this slide, because
03:15 currently, we have both our audio clips starting at the same time.
03:18 So if we click Preview and choose this slide, we'll hear everything at once.
03:25 Hi, and welcome to kinetECO New Hire Orientation.
03:28 We're so happy to have you onboard. Alright, we'll close the preview and then
03:33 we might want to go down to our time line.
03:35 And I'm going to stretch it up a little bit here and make an adjustment.
03:38 I'm thinking maybe the narration itself could start a little bit layer.
03:42 So all we do is make sure it's selected with a click.
03:45 And go over to the left here. When we see the double arrow.
03:47 And click and drag it to the right. If you want to wait a second so let the
03:51 music start and then come in with the narration.
03:55 That's probably pretty good. Again, we could preview it from our
03:58 preview drop down until we get it exactly right.
04:01 So that's how we add narration to your e-learning project.
04:05 Of course, without a microphone to record and speakers to play it back, it can be
04:09 very difficult. You'll need those items to be able to do
04:13 what we just did.
04:14

Syncing audio with cue points
00:00 If you're going to be using audio, such as, narration in combination with
00:04 animation effects, you might consider adding cue points to your audio, which
00:09 will determine when certain actions will take place on your slide.
00:12 That's what we're going to do with our new higher orientation project here,
00:16 looking at the product scene. And our third slide, 3.3, which is
00:20 information about our K-Eco Mini Panel. If you jump to this lesson, you can get
00:25 caught up by going to the Chapter4 folder and opening up Orientation0403.
00:30 The first thing that we need to do, if we're going to animate our text, let's
00:34 say, and have some audio going along with that is to perhaps break it up into paragraphs.
00:39 That way we can animate portions of our text at a time.
00:43 So, let's just click the balloon because it is an object that's been grouped
00:46 together with the balloon. Go up to the Format tab and click Group
00:51 here in the Arrange section on the ribbon and choose Ungroup.
00:55 Now by doing that, we can actually choose to animate just the text, as opposed to
00:59 the entire object. Now, let's go inside the text box.
01:02 We'll click right after the word sun. We'll add a period, hit Enter to start
01:07 the new paragraph, and then we'll delete the comma, the space, and the capital A
01:11 goes in where the lowercase a was. There we go.
01:15 All right. Now we can animate this.
01:17 Let's click the border of the box, go up to animations.
01:22 In the entrance animations, we'll click the drop down under None and have this
01:26 fly in but by paragraph. There it is by first level paragraph.
01:30 And we'll leave it at medium speed from the bottom.
01:33 Perfect. If we want to see what that looks like,
01:35 we can hit the Play button down below just to get a feel for the animation.
01:39 There they go. Beautiful.
01:42 Now, currently, it's just based on our timeline and the slide timings.
01:47 But if we're going to add narration, then we would need to add cue points to
01:50 determine when the first paragraph appears and then the second.
01:53 So let's record our animation now. Just click off to the edge, so nothing's selected.
01:58 We'll go up to the Insert tab. We've done this before.
02:01 Click sound here in the media section. Click the drop-down, so you can choose
02:05 Record Mic. Now from here, we're going to record our
02:08 audio by clicking the record button. We'll hit this same button when we're done.
02:12 Here we go. Countdown begins.
02:14 Not only do our panels change quickly, they also provide power for an incredible
02:19 number of hours. All right.
02:21 So we hit the Stop button. If we want to hear that back, we can hit
02:24 the Play button. >> Not only do our panels change
02:27 quickly, they also provide power for an incredible number of hours.
02:30 >> Perfect, now I'm going to save that. It gets saved now to my timeline, you can
02:34 see as Sound 1. I'm going to double-click Sound 1 and
02:38 type in narration. It's a good idea to label things.
02:41 All right. So as we look at our timeline now,
02:44 there's actually a playhead here that moves across the timeline when we hit our
02:48 Play button, and we can put in cues. Now because we actually see a wave here
02:52 that determines where we're speaking, it's pretty easy to choose exactly where
02:56 we want to cue up our text. So let's go to, just before the one
03:01 second mark, and we'll right-click with our playhead right before the one second
03:06 mark, anywhere on the timeline here. And notice, Create Cue Point at Playhead
03:11 is our only option. There we go.
03:13 Now, there's a bit of break here. And at about three and half seconds,
03:17 looks like we have another cue point. So, again on the timeline, we'll write
03:22 click, and choose Create Cue Point at Playhead.
03:25 We have two cue points. Now we can coordinate our text animations
03:31 with those cue points. So the first bit of text down below here.
03:35 And if your not seeing it, you'll notice when we actually break up our paragraph
03:39 with animations, this little arrow shows up next to our text box.
03:42 And clicking it expands it to show. There's actually two parts to it.
03:45 The first part should be selected, the 4 by 3 K-Eco Mini Panel.
03:49 We'll go to the left side and we'll drag it to the left so it lines up with Q.1.
03:55 Then we'll go to the second paragraph down below, select it where it says, And
03:58 provides up to. Let's drag it over to Q.2.
04:03 There we go. Now, if we want to test this out, we'll
04:05 hit our Play button. (SOUND)
04:07 >> They also provide power for an incredible number of (INAUDIBLE).
04:10 >> Okay, back to the beginning (SOUND) and play again.
04:14 >> Not only do our panels change quickly, they also provide power for an
04:18 incredible number of hours. >> Very nice.
04:21 The only problem, obviously, is my male voice with this female character.
04:25 If you're in the same situation as me, we'll click the character, go up to the
04:29 Design tab under our Character tools. And change our character to a male character.
04:33 I'm going to go with this guy. There we go.
04:35 (SOUND) So that's how we use cue points to coordinate our audio with certain
04:40 actions that happen on our slides. You can also use this with video.
04:44 So if you're playing a video that includes some audio you can add cue
04:48 points at the right spot on the timeline, so that they synchronize with certain
04:52 actions happening on your slides. Good to save our changes before moving on.

Inserting video
00:00 Just as we can add audio, and record audio to be placed on one of our slides
00:05 here in an elearning project and storyline, you can do the same with video.
00:09 And that's what we're going to explore right now, continuing work with our new
00:13 higher-orientation project. This time, though, we're going to go to
00:16 the Marketing scene, which is Scene 4, and the last slide in that scene, 4.3, is
00:22 our Video public service announcement. Now currently there is no video, just
00:26 kind of a placeholder rectangle here. We're going to start getting into some
00:30 good habits as we look at the timeline we see text box, text box and rectangle.
00:35 Well, if we click text box you can see that there's actually one down here that
00:38 says click to play video. We'll have to create a trigger for that.
00:41 So let's double click and start renaming our text boxes so we understand what
00:45 we're looking at on the timeline. So we can type in something like click to
00:49 Play, Trigger and Enter. The other text box, one we selected down
00:54 here is our title, so why not double click and just type in title.
00:58 So it's not to be confused. The rectangle speaks for itself.
01:01 It's the only rectangle here, and in fact we're actually going to remove in the end.
01:05 So I'll just leave it named as it is. Alright, time to go get our video now.
01:10 So a simple matter of clicking insert. Going over here to the media section and
01:14 clicking the drop down for video. Notice you can get video from a file.
01:17 You can also go get video from a website. Maybe YouTube for example or if you want
01:22 it to grab a clip from there. And down below if you have a webcam
01:25 attached to your computer. You could record, just like we recorded
01:29 narration in a previous movie. Let's go to Video From File.
01:32 If you have the exercise files in the Chapter 4 folder, we have one here called
01:36 the KinetEco PSA. Notice it's MPEG 4, and down below, the
01:41 different formats you can bring in include, look at that.
01:44 There's Shockwave Flash files, AVIs, WMV files, MOV files, Mpeg we already know.
01:50 Look at them all, lots to choose from here, and you can narrow it down to a
01:56 specific format if you wanted to from this list.
01:59 With mpeg selected, I see my mpeg four video file.
02:03 Now it's the only one we had, so we'll select it and click open.
02:07 This particular video is about a minute and a half, so it's quite large in size.
02:12 Notice it also appears here with an initial black screen, taking up way more
02:17 than our slide. So, we're going to use the handles, like
02:19 we would with any other other object to size this down.
02:21 We'll click and drag from the top right, for example.
02:24 Then go into the center and drag it into position.
02:27 Might want to center it here in this rectangle if we can.
02:29 When we get to the right spot, we can release.
02:32 Fact is we're not going to keep the rectangle, so let's go to it, click in
02:36 the background, and make sure we're getting the green rectangle, and hit
02:39 Delete on your keyboard. All right, now we'll go back to our video
02:42 which we just inserted. Notice it appears now on the timeline.
02:45 It says video one by default. We can double click to get into the habit.
02:49 We'll type in PSA video, press Enter. Now we know exactly what video we're
02:54 looking at. And if we want to preview it, let's just
02:56 go down to the play button here. Click the Play button to play the slide.
03:00 It's happening all over the world. Every day people are harnessing the power
03:04 of the sun, and it's literally lighting up their lives.
03:07 Okay, we'll press Stop, and that's the video we wanted.
03:10 And we still see the frame here. If it's selected, let's go up to the
03:14 Options tab on the ribbon where you can do things like adjust the size, the
03:19 height and width, if you wanted to. You could also come over here to preview it.
03:23 If you find the volume's a little too high, switch it to Low.
03:27 You can also edit the video. Now, typically, you would use a video
03:30 editor to get exactly what you want before bringing it in, but there are some
03:33 options here with this video editor. Clicking it is going to load up your video.
03:39 Notice we have a timeline here, across the bottom.
03:41 We can play our video at any time. >> It's happening all over the world.
03:45 >> Press the Stop button. Then we have things like trim which will
03:48 take some content off of the beginning, and the end of your video.
03:52 Just click trim, and see what happens. Click trim again to turn that off.
03:57 If you want to crop the screen itselt, you can use the crop button.
04:01 And choose exactly what part of the screen is viewable.
04:04 I don't think we need to crop anything. Here's our volume control again, same
04:08 thing as we saw up here on the ribbon. We can add a logo to prevent copyright
04:12 infringement, maybe place our logo on top of the video.
04:15 We can even change to a different video or reset our video if we've made too many changes.
04:21 Add brightness and contrast options for adjusting our playback.
04:25 So lots of things we can do here. We don't really need it though because we
04:28 have a pretty good video, so we'll just close that up.
04:31 Now it's time to maybe resize this a little bit better.
04:36 You want to move it on your slide so it's nicely centered under the title.
04:40 And when you have it in position exactly where you want it, really there's nothing
04:47 left to do but preview this. Notice that certain things are going to
04:50 happen by default. Under the video options as well.
04:53 The video will appear inside the slide. If you prefer people to watch the video
04:57 in their browser you could click this drop down and have a new browser window
05:01 pop open. And they could view that separately
05:04 outside of the presentation. Leave it at in slide.
05:07 We also saw when we hit the play button down on the time line that it played automatically.
05:11 But we do have this text box down below, which is going to act as a trigger, so
05:17 instead of playing it automatically, we should click the drop-down and choose
05:21 from trigger. That way it will not play until somebody
05:23 clicks this little text box, click to play video.
05:26 Well if we're going to do that we need to create the trigger.
05:29 So let's go down to the text box, click inside, then click the border.
05:33 This is what we want to turn into our trigger.
05:35 So let's go to create a new trigger. It's going to be play media, what media?
05:40 Click the drop down and you'll see that we could actually select a video from
05:43 file from here, or the record webcam options, like we saw when first choosing
05:48 a video. But there's our video right there, that's
05:51 already inserted, we'll select it. And you can see the click to play trigger
05:55 is our click to play video right now. When we click the drop down, that's the
06:00 exact text box we want. Just hover over it and you can see, and
06:03 confirm, that it's highlighted. Alright, so now all we have to do is
06:06 click OK, and our trigger has now been created.
06:08 It now shows up over here on the right-hand side in our Triggers panel.
06:12 So if we really want to test this out, we would preview the slide itself.
06:16 Let's go up to the Preview Drop Down button under Publish and choose this slide.
06:22 Now, because of the video, and you see it might take a moment for our slide to
06:25 appear, there we go, and now, nothing's happening until we click where it says
06:29 Click to play video. >> It's happening all over the world.
06:33 Everyday, people are harnessing the power of the sun, and it's literally lighting
06:37 up their lives. (MUSIC) Click the Close Preview button to
06:47 return to our slide. And that's all there is to add video to
06:51 one of your E-learning projects here in Storyline.

Ensuring accessibility
00:00 When creating e-learning projects here in Storyline, we want to ensure everyone is
00:04 going to be able to enjoy our project, including those with hearing or visual impairments.
00:09 So accessibility becomes very important. There are certain features built into
00:14 Storyline to help us with that. We're going to explore them now as we
00:17 continue work with our New Hire Orientation project.
00:20 If you were following along in a previous movie, we're working in the marketing
00:24 scene, looking at our third slide, 4.3, where we inserted some video and a trigger.
00:29 If you've jumped to this movie, you can get caught up by going to the Chapter4
00:32 folder and opening up Orientation0405. All right, let's explore some of the
00:38 built-in accessibility features here in Storyline by going to the Preview.
00:42 Up at the top right corner, in the Publish section, click the drop-down and
00:45 choose this slide. Now, some people might use screen readers
00:49 that will allow them to tab around the screen, not having to use a mouse, and
00:53 highlight certain areas of the slide, and get information either read to them, or highlighted.
00:59 Let's hit the Tab key. Notice that the logo is highlighted.
01:02 Hit the Tab key again, there's our title. Each time you hit Tab, something new is
01:07 getting highlighted. Our graphics across the bottom, our
01:09 trigger that's important. Then we have the various buttons on our player.
01:14 They could be important to someone who is impaired.
01:18 Let's go up to resources now, that's good, we want to be able to access resources.
01:22 Using our keyboard, we would press Enter and we would want that read out to us.
01:26 Now, it does say resources, so we would need something called alternative text
01:30 here, but other areas we might, like our video for example click to play videos
01:35 find the video itself. Alright.
01:37 Let's close our previous. That takes us back to our slide.
01:41 There are certain things here that didn't need to be highlighted as well, like our
01:44 logo, the graphics across the bottom. Nothing's going to happen with those.
01:49 So we might want to hide those from our Accessibility options.
01:54 Let's go to our Master slide by clicking the View tab, and then choosing the Slide
01:58 Master, and we'll select the very top one here, which is our main slide master,
02:03 including everything that could appear on any of the other types of slides or layouts.
02:08 There's our logo, let's click the logo. We don't need that to be highlighted when
02:12 we use our Tab key. So in this case we actually want to go to
02:16 the Format tab, then go over to the Size section here, and click that little arrow
02:21 in the bottom corner. This is going to open up a dialog box.
02:24 And we could also right-click the logo to get to the size and position box.
02:29 But notice we have Size, Position and something called Alt Text.
02:33 With All Text selected, we can choose to make this object not visible to
02:38 Accessibility tools by deselecting the checkbox,a nd now we can click Close.
02:43 Same thing for these graphics across the bottom.
02:45 We'll select them. This time, let's right-click, and go to
02:48 Size and Position. Now, with All Text selected, we can
02:52 deselect the check box, and click Close. Now, if there was anything else on any of
02:56 our slides that we did not need to have visible to our accessibility tools, we
03:02 would follow the same procedure. But for now, let's go back up to our View
03:06 tab and switch back to our Normal view. All right, if we were to preview this now
03:11 by clicking the Preview drop-down and choosing this slide, Ctrl+F12 is your
03:15 keyboard shortcut, too, don't forget. Let's see what happens when we start
03:19 hitting our tab Tey. Well, there's our title.
03:21 That would be read out. There is the trigger clicked to play video.
03:25 And notice it's skipping over the logo and the graphics.
03:28 There's our player tools across the bottom, previous and next, resources.
03:32 And then it starts over with the title again.
03:35 Perfect. Now, if there was anything else that we
03:38 wanted to have read out that didn't have, say, some obvious text, like Video PSA,
03:44 we might want to explain that a little better.
03:46 So let's close our preview, we'll go to the title, select it, maybe right-click
03:51 the border and select size and position. With Alt Text, definitely checked off,
03:56 you could add some alternative text. So in this case, we could expand on what
04:00 it's saying, Video Public Service Announcement.
04:08 That's a little more descriptive, and click Close.
04:11 That's what will be read out when users tab over that using accessibility tools.
04:16 Okay, so we're well on our way now to making our E-learning project accessible
04:20 to everyone, including those with visual or hearing impairments.
04:24 Let's go back to our Home tab and save up our changes, before continuing on.

Adding hotspots
00:00 One important aspect of any e-learning project is to keep it interactive.
00:04 That's going to keep your learners learning.
00:06 And one cool way to add interactivity is to use hotspots.
00:10 Hotspots can be placed on your slide, so that when users either hover over them or
00:15 click them, for example, something exciting would happen.
00:19 Let's explore this as we continue work with our hire Orientation project,
00:22 looking now at scene 2, that's our organization scene.
00:26 And the second slide 2.2, which is our headquarters executive team.
00:31 Let's say we want users to hover over the images of our executive team and hear a
00:35 message from them. We'll do one, and if you want, you can
00:38 add others. As a practice lesson we're going to work
00:41 with our CEO here. So the first thing is to get the message recorded.
00:45 Lets go up to Insert. Lets go over to Sound.
00:49 Click the drop-down and click Record Mic. Now, at this point, you'd have the CEO in
00:55 front of the mic. I'm going to play the part of Simon Lodine.
00:59 Clicking the Record button, I'm just simply going to introduce myself.
01:04 Hi, I'm Simon Lodine, CEO at kinet ECO Incorporated.
01:09 I'll click Save to save it to my timeline, there it is down there.
01:12 And now, I want that to played, not automatically, but when someone hovers
01:17 over the image of Simon Lodein. So that involves inserting a hotspot.
01:22 We'll go up to the Hotspot drop-down here in our Interactive Objects section of the ribbon.
01:27 And since the ribbon itself is circular in nature, oval would be the appropriate
01:32 choice for a shape. Next, we'll come down here to the image itself.
01:37 Click and drag over it. And if we wanted to, we could include The
01:41 name and title, but I'm going to go with the image itself.
01:44 We can move that around, resize it, etc. As long as it's close to the original
01:49 object, people won't see the hot spot. And when they hover over it, maybe
01:53 something should happen. That means going over here to our trigger
01:56 section, where a new trigger. Has been created.
01:59 Now, there are certain defaults. You can see when the user clicks it's
02:02 supposed to show an unassigned layer, but we can change that by going down to the,
02:06 edit selected trigger button. The action is going to be, playing some media.
02:11 So we'll click the drop-down, go to media, select play media, what media is that?
02:17 Well, it's going to be our recording. You can see it's just titled Sound 1
02:21 right now. We should really re-title that on our timeline.
02:25 And when's that going to happen? Instead of clicks, how about hovers?
02:28 So you can see, as we go down the Click Events, we need to go past that to some
02:33 other events, such as Mouse hoevered over.
02:37 When we select that, the Hotspot's already there because we're editing the
02:40 new trigger that was created and restore on mouse leave.
02:44 That means when the mouse hovers past our hotspot, everything's restored to its
02:49 original state. We'll click OK.
02:51 All right, I'm going to go down here where I see sound 1, double click that,
02:55 and it should really be labeled appropriately.
02:58 How about Simon intro, and enter. There we go.
03:03 Now if we go back to our trigger, notice that it's going to play the media called
03:07 Simon intro. Perfect.
03:09 Ready to test this out? Let's click the Preview drop-down and
03:12 choose this slide. And now, as we move our mouse and just
03:16 simply hover over the image of Simon Lodine.
03:19 >> Hi, I'm Simon Lodine, CEO at kinetCO Incorporated.
03:25 >> Beautiful. We'll close our preview.
03:28 And return to our slide. Now, if you wat to practice that, go
03:30 ahead and add some recordings for each of the individuals on our Executive Team,
03:34 create hot spots for each of them. And don't forget to edit the triggers so
03:40 that hovering over those hotspots will play the audio.
03:43

Creating a screen recording
00:00 If you need to demonstrate certain steps that need to be taken to perform a task
00:04 or maybe you want to show a piece of software, and how to accomplish something.
00:08 You can choose to record your screen here, and Storyline.
00:12 It's just a matter of having that screen ready to be recorded ahead of time.
00:16 So we we're going to do that with our new higher orientation project.
00:20 Moving to the marketing scene which is scene 4, and we'll start on slide 4.2.
00:25 When we record our screen, we have the options of saving that recording to a
00:30 single video or to slides. In any case new slides will be created
00:35 but we can have a slide ready to move the content to and that's what we're going to
00:39 do here with our social networking slide. Let's go up to insert and add a subtitle
00:44 by clicking check box up here. Ctrl + T is your keyboard shortcut.
00:48 Next, we'll just click under Social Networking and add a subtitle by typing,
00:52 how about commenting. On one of our log posts.
01:01 Next, we'll move to the border, when we see the four sided arrow, just try to
01:04 move that up and have it centered under our title.
01:07 And now we can click off to the side to deselect it.
01:10 So here's a good spot for that demo to go, the screen recording, before we start
01:15 recording our screen, we need to have that screen ready.
01:18 Because Storyline will disappear the moment we start recording.
01:22 What's in behind Storyline? That's what we need to prepare.
01:25 So, you can go to Internet Explorer or whatever your default browser is.
01:29 And then go to the blog.kineteco.net site.
01:33 This is where we want to record the steps.
01:35 So with that on the background, I can ALT + Tab back to Storyline.
01:40 and start my recording by going back to the insert tab, and notice there's a
01:44 record button, and a drop down. When you click the drop down, here's
01:48 where you'll see a list of screen recordings you may already have, and if
01:51 you don't have any like me, there won't be any to see.
01:55 But also, from this drop down, you can record your screen.
01:58 That's the same as clicking the record button here at the top, so let's do that.
02:02 Let's click record your screen, and nothing's going to happen initially,
02:06 except you will see this frame, indicating the area you're about to record.
02:10 We can move this around. I'm going to move it by going right to
02:13 the center here, where it says, how to record.
02:16 Click and drag it up to the top left corner.
02:18 I don't need to see the tool bars and anything, just the screen itself.
02:22 And now I'm going to go down to the bottom right handle where I see the
02:25 double diagonal arrow. I'm going to drag that down, and you'll
02:29 see it keeps its aspect ratio. I want to go down close to the bottom,
02:33 but I also want to stretch it out to the right to include the scroll bar, because
02:37 we will be using that in our recording, there we go.
02:41 So that's the area I'm going to record. Now I'm going to go to the controls.
02:45 You'll notice we have a Record button, there's our screen size at any time we
02:50 can cancel this. Once we record though this Cancel button
02:54 turns into a Done button or you can press Esc.
02:57 Either way you'll stop the recording. So when we're ready to record all we do
03:01 is hit the record button. You'll want to have prepared what it is
03:04 you're going to say as you're moving around the screen.
03:09 To reply to any one of our blog posts, visit our site.
03:13 Scroll down to the blog post of your choosing.
03:17 And next to each title you'll notice a balloon icon.
03:20 Click the balloon icon, and you'll arrive at the Leave a Reply window.
03:25 Any items that you see with a red asterisk are mandatory fields.
03:30 So click in the name field and type in your name.
03:32 You'll also be required to enter your email address.
03:36 Click in there and type it in. If you want to you can include a website
03:46 and down below is where you'll add your comment.
03:48 (SOUND). Next, you'll click Post Comment to post
04:02 the comment to the site. That's all there is to posting a comment
04:06 here at our website. Alright, I'll click done.
04:10 Everything I was saying, and everything I was doing on the screen was being recorded.
04:14 Now, depending on the length of your recording.
04:16 It could take a while to process the video.
04:19 Eventually, though, you'll see saving, 100 percent.
04:23 And the progress bar turns green. And you'll be prompted for some options.
04:27 You'll need to choose how this is going to appear in your Storyline project.
04:33 So we'll let that finish and continue from there.
04:36 So notice we're taken back to Storyline and we have this insert slides window, by
04:41 default, we're going to adding our screen recording to new slides now could be as a
04:47 video on a single slide that's one option.
04:50 Notice down below it will still insert a new slide which could be add a new scene,
04:57 or it could be add an existing scene. We want it to go to our marketing scene,
05:01 but still we will get a brand new slide added to the end of our scene.
05:05 We'll have to make some adjustments. The other option is step by step slides.
05:10 What this does is create multiple slides. Clicking the drop down, you'll see we can
05:14 view the mode stats as we're changing modes, try them or test them.
05:18 And in this case, it's really more applicable for us to add our screen
05:23 recording as a video that will appear on a single slide.
05:26 And we do want to see the mouse cursor. So it's going to go to the marketing
05:29 scene when we click insert this is where your video will be processed.
05:34 Notice, it's initializing the project. And again, depending on the length of
05:38 your screen recording, this could take a few minutes.
05:41 So we'll let it run its course and continue from there.
05:47 So eventually, the video is processed and encoded, and a new slide appears at the
05:51 end of our scene. We can click that slide to see we
05:54 actually have a new object appearing on our slide, which is our screen recording.
05:58 And of course, it has handles, so we can size it down so it fits better on the
06:02 slide We can move it around. Place it into position.
06:05 We can even take it and put it onto that slide that we already had prepared.
06:09 In that case, what we want to do is cut it from here.
06:13 If you go to the Home tab, you'll notice a cut tab up here in the clipboard
06:17 option, Ctrl + X is a common keyboard shortcut.
06:20 Let's just cut it, and go to the social networking slide and paste it there.
06:26 We'll click the paste button. Control v is your keyboard shortcut.
06:30 We'll just move it into position, center it down below so we can see our subtitle,
06:34 for example. You may want to resize it as well.
06:38 I'm going to size it down just a little bit.
06:41 And move it down into position right where I want it.
06:45 That looks pretty good right there. All right, we'll deselect.
06:48 We longer need that new slide that appeared so we can right click it and
06:52 choose delete. You'll need to confirm by answering yes.
06:55 We'll go back to 4.2 here, our second slide, and we now have our screen
07:00 recording which is just like any other video.
07:03 We can play this by going down to the Timeline and clicking the Play button to
07:07 take a peek. To reply to any one of our blog post
07:11 visit our (UNKNOWN) scroll down to the blog post of your choosing and next to
07:17 each title you'll notice a balloon icon. Click the balloon icon.
07:23 >> And you'll arrive at the lever >> Okay, we can click Stop.
07:26 I think we have the idea. The fact is, you can record anything
07:30 that's on your screen. Create a video out of that to appear in
07:34 your elearning project.

5. Assessing Elearning
Elearning assessment basics
00:00 To measure the effectiveness of your elearning project, you'll want to assess
00:04 whether your learners have understood and retained the knowledge you're trying to
00:08 pass on. In Storyline, this is typically done
00:11 through quizzing. And in Storyline you'll find a number of
00:14 new and improved features, to ensure your quizzes are accomplishing their intended goals.
00:18 In this chapter, we'll be creating a quiz that will help us to determine if our
00:22 learners truly comprehend what they've learned.
00:25 But before we tackle the creation process, let's get some basic
00:28 understanding about quizzes first. A quiz is basically, a series of questions.
00:34 And Storyline offers a number of different question types, like true or
00:38 false, and multiple choice, fill in the blank in short answer, as well as
00:43 matching sequence, rating scale, and random questions.
00:46 We'll be exploring these different types in greater detail later in this chapter.
00:50 But it's important to know, Storyline is very flexible in how you get your answers.
00:54 To help your learners with the areas where they might be experiencing some
00:58 difficulty, you may also want to incorporate remediation into your quizzes.
01:03 This allows learners to revisit relevant content, when they answer a quiz question incorrectly.
01:08 We can now do this in Storyline and we'll cover this topic in more detail later in
01:13 this chapter. Now, scoring is another important part of
01:17 elearning assessment. And Storyline includes a number of
01:19 scoring options, including some new features like, partial and negative scoring.
01:25 If you have questions with more than one right answer, you'll want to use partial scoring.
01:29 And if you want to take points away from a learner, who might be using guesswork
01:33 and chooses the wrong answer, you might want to incorporate negative scoring in
01:37 your quiz. We'll explore these options as well later
01:40 in the chapter. Of course, the results of the quiz will
01:43 let us know whether a learner has understood and retained what was presented.
01:47 This is the reporting phase, and analyzing results is another important
01:51 part of elearning assessment. Storyline allows us to connect to a
01:55 variety of learning management systems to help with this phase.
02:00 And we'll examine this important aspect at the end of this course when we get
02:03 into publishing your elearning projects. So, now that you have a better
02:07 understanding of the basics of elearning assessment, its time to set up our first quiz.
02:12 We'll do that next.
02:13

Creating intermittent review questions
00:00 One way of assessing your learners here in Storyline is to throw out intermittent questions.
00:05 That is questions that will appear along the way as they go through your elearning project.
00:11 Now, these questions can be scored and can be included in the overall results,
00:14 although the questions don't appear as part of the.
00:17 Overall quiz that we have at the end of our project.
00:20 So we're going to work with our new higher orientation to insert one of these
00:23 interactive freeform questions, and we're going to go to scene four, our marketing
00:28 scene, and select the last slide over here on the lefthand side.
00:32 Because we're about to insert a new slide and we want it to go right after our
00:36 video public service announcement. Now if you want to be caught up with me
00:40 go to the Chapter 5 folder of your Exercise Files and Open Orientation0502.
00:44 Alright, next we'll go to the New Slide button right here in the Slide section of
00:50 our Ribbon with the Home tab selected. Next, we're going to go to the Quizzing category.
00:56 Now, this is not necessarily going to be a graded quiz question.
01:00 We want a free-form question that can be included in our eLearning project
01:05 separate from our quiz, and notice the different options we have.
01:09 Drag and drop when we select it over here, we get a description over here, and
01:13 it just allows people to be interactive with your project by dragging shapes and
01:17 items to targets that you would supply. There's a pick one kind of like a
01:21 multiple choice, or a pick many, or you might want them to type in some text.
01:26 An answer to a question you might put on a slide, or even use a hotspot.
01:30 Hotspots let the user click the hotspot on the slide to get some feedback Let's
01:35 go to text entry. We'll select that one and click insert.
01:39 Now this does insert that new slide. You can see it over here.
01:42 And automatically brings up this little window for text entry type questions.
01:47 So at the top, although we don't have our question on the slide or anything yet
01:51 We're going to start with our answer. Let's say our question is going to be,
01:55 who delievered the public service announcement in the video?
01:58 Well, the answer is actually Talia Wilson, so we'll type that in.
02:02 And you might be wondering, what if people type it in all caps, or all lower
02:08 case, for example. Well, down below, we can click a checkbox
02:12 that answers are case sensitive, but with it unchecked, they can type it in any
02:16 way, as long as they spell it correctly, they'll get a correct answer.
02:20 So we'll press enter to lock that in, it's the only correct answer.
02:23 Now up here for our display section on the ribbon, you'll notice feedback will
02:28 be given by the question. The only other option is None, and that
02:32 is to not give any feedback. The feedback appears down at the bottom
02:35 of this window, for a correct answer, the default text is, that's right.
02:39 You selected the correct response. And there's the default incorrect text
02:44 that will appear, or feedback. Also, scoring, we can click the drop-down
02:48 again and have no scoring, or have it scored by the question, and you can see
02:52 the default number of points is 10 for the correct answer.
02:55 Zero for an incorrect answer. Another option is to give them attempts.
03:00 Maybe we'll give them a couple of attempts, click the drop down and choose 2.
03:03 That throws in some new feedback down below which is the try again feedback.
03:08 That is incorrect, please try again. I want you to see something as well.
03:12 When they get a correct response or an incorrect response, other things are
03:16 going to happen. Click the more button and you'll notice
03:20 that branching also exists here. It's going to go to the next slide automatically.
03:24 In our project, that means going to scene five which is the quiz itself and it'll
03:29 go right to that first slide. Same thing for an incorrect, if we click
03:33 the more button, there it is. And if we wanted to, we could be more specific.
03:37 Go directly to scene five, for example. I'll just scroll down to the quiz scene
03:42 and choose the slide that we want them to go to.
03:45 There we go, and click OK. The Submit Keys field is blank.
03:50 If you wanted them to use a keyboard, you could choose which keys will act as a
03:55 Submit option. There is a Submit button that appears on
03:59 the player, though, by default. You could also create your own submit
04:02 button right on the slide if you wanted to, by going to the submit buttons drop
04:06 down, and creating a new button, or a new hot spot, even.
04:09 But we really don't need it, you'll see it in the player when we preview momentarily.
04:13 So, we have everything we need. All we have to do is click save and close.
04:17 And there's our new slide, and you'll notice the text box where they are to
04:20 type in their answer, we can size that. I'm going to size it down, it's a short answer.
04:26 We can move it around, just like any other object.
04:29 What we don't have on our slide, though, is the question.
04:31 So, let's go up to the Insert tab and add a Text Box.
04:36 We'll just click anywhere to start typing, who delivers the public-service
04:45 announcement in the previous video, there we go.
04:49 Alright let's select the border. And we'll bump up the size from the font
04:54 section here on the ribbon. Maybe bold it.
04:57 There we go. We'll move it around and then we'll line
05:00 up the answer down below. With it using those guidelines that appear.
05:04 let's get it lined up on the left. And if we wanted to, we could change that text.
05:09 Instead of type your text here, let's double-click on the word text and type in
05:15 answer space, that looks good. Click outside.
05:19 Alright, perfect. Time to preview this.
05:22 Let's go up to the publish section on the ribbon.
05:24 Click the preview drop down and choose this slide.
05:28 It's going to bring up our slide which would appear after that public service
05:31 annoucement video. who delievers the PSA in that video.
05:35 We click inside the field and type in an incorret answer.
05:41 You could press enter it is a default key or click submit which does appear on our player.
05:47 That's incorrect. Please try again.
05:48 Remember, I get two shots at this. Let's try talia wilson in lower case, and
05:56 click Submit. That's right, you selected the correct response.
06:00 We'll click Continue, and because we're only previewing this one slide, we don't
06:05 automatically go to the next slide, but that would happen in reality.
06:09 So click the Close Preview button, and we'll want to save our changes.
06:13 That's how we throw in a free form question.
06:16 And intermittent interaction, to assess our learner's activities, here in Storyline.
06:21

Using different question types
00:00 A quiz is a great way to assess learners here in Storyline, so we're going to take
00:05 a look at the types of questions that can appear inside a quiz.
00:08 Now quiz can be a project all on its own, or it could reside within an existing
00:13 project like our new higher orientation project here.
00:17 You'll notice that we have a fifth scene titled quiz, and we're now looking at the
00:22 very first slide which is simply a title slide.
00:24 If you need to get caught up with me, go to the Chapter 5 folder and open up Orientation0503.
00:31 Alright from here, let's just go through the slides that were imported from Powerpoint.
00:36 The next slide is really just an option for our user's to go on, taking the quiz
00:41 or go back to the main menu if they wanted to refresh their memories, for example.
00:45 If they do take the quiz, they go on to the next slide which is a true or false question.
00:49 There are different types of questions that can be used in a quiz.
00:52 True false is one of them. In this case, you can see we have a
00:55 question, and from our power point slide we can see that the statement up above is
01:00 actually false. So we'll keep that in mind when creating
01:03 our question slide, the next one looks like a multiple choice question.
01:07 And in this case there's only one right answer you can see, it's C.
01:11 If we go down to the next slide, here's one where we could have more than one
01:15 right answer. And we can assign points to each correct
01:18 answer, so people can actually get partial points if they don't select all
01:23 three of the correct answers here. We can even decide to take away Points if
01:28 they select one of the wrong ones. A little further down now to the next
01:31 slide, as you can see, is a question where our users will be required to input
01:37 an answer. And in this case, the answer is one mile.
01:41 Then we have a matching. As you can see here, we have a number of
01:44 items down the left that need to be matched up with items down the right-hand side.
01:49 Next we have one that would use hot spots.
01:53 So the question appears at the top and we would hover over these different pieces
01:57 of pie to make a selection and then down at the end is where our results will go.
02:03 Now we don't have time to go through every one of these questions, but maybe
02:06 we should go through our first one the true false question and create this.
02:11 In a quiz that's going to be graded, we can't actually just create a free-form question.
02:16 Notice when we go to the Insert tab, we could choose to convert this particular
02:21 slide to a free-form question, but we want to actually compile results, grade
02:26 our users on their answers, and provide results at the very end, so none of these
02:31 options actually apply. We need to create a new slide which will
02:35 have our question on it. So although these came from PowerPoint
02:39 and we can't use them in our quiz, we can use the contents on this slide.
02:43 For example, True or False? Simon Lodine is KinetEco's CFO.
02:48 While sort of having to retype this, I'm going to click on it to select it, and
02:52 I'm going to copy it. You can either use control c on your
02:55 keyboard, or if you wanted to, go back to the home tab and choose copy from there.
02:59 It's up to you. Once we have it copied, now we can
03:02 actually pop it into the new true false question we're about to create.
03:05 And we do that by clicking the Insert Tab, choosing New Slide with quizzing selected.
03:11 We want to make sure the grade tab is now selected, and true/false.
03:16 Notice all the different question types, there's multiple choice, multiple
03:19 response, fill in the blank. We have a word bank as well, there's matching.
03:24 And as we scroll down the list, you can see there's the hot spot one, lots of
03:29 different options for different question types, just like we saw in our power
03:33 point presentation slides we imported. But true false is the one we want right
03:37 now, so when we click insert, a new slide is actually added to the very end of our scene.
03:42 We'll have to move that around when we're done, but for now we need to enter the question.
03:46 And since we copied already, we can just click the paste button to paste that in.
03:51 There it is, true or false, Simone Lodne is kinetECO's CFO?
03:56 All right, if we accidentally got an extra return in there, we can just hit
04:00 the backspace key to go back up. Down below, the correct answer is
04:03 actually false. And then down below further we have the feedback.
04:08 If the answer is correct they will see that's right you selected the correct response.
04:14 If they choose true which is incorrect they'll see you did not select the
04:18 correct response. And if we want to change that or add to
04:21 it we could. Just click inside there.
04:23 Leave a couple of spaces and type in Simon is the CEO, there we go.
04:31 So we give them the correct response as well, they get no points for that, 10
04:35 points as you can see for a correct answer.
04:37 If we want to change that we just click inside there, it's a true false I'm
04:40 going to knock that down to 5 since they have a 50/50 chance, and press Enter.
04:45 All right, so there's our question. Notice that the feedback is by question
04:50 so they will see feedback that we have down below.
04:53 If we chose none, they wouldn't see our feedback.
04:56 We want that. And the score is also by the question,
04:59 that's the only option. How many attempts?
05:01 Just the one attempt. Clicking the drop down doesn't make sense
05:03 to give them two more more attempts on a true false.
05:06 So, one chance, that's all they get. We'll click save, and close.
05:11 And you can see, it doesn't look perfect on our slide.
05:14 So there's some adjusting that needs to be done.
05:15 First of all, this area here which includes the radio buttons for true and false.
05:21 Let's just click anywhere down below, so the entire thing is selected.
05:24 We'll just click and drag that down. And if we wanted to, go to the border,
05:29 move it around on our slide. And do the same now with our question at
05:34 the top. Should probably size that down.
05:37 It's okay if it's on two lines. And I think it would be good if these
05:41 lined up on the left hand side, clicking here, adjust things around.
05:48 We don't need all this space over here, or down below.
05:51 And there's our first question in our quiz.
05:54 And of course it's in the wrong place, our true and false.
05:57 It needs to be up here right after The slide that gives them the option.
06:02 So we'll move it in there. The other slide, the original slide that
06:06 was imported, is no longer needed. And if we wanted to insert the picture,
06:09 we can go grab this picture. Hold down your Shift key and click the
06:13 border on the round the outside, so we get both of these.
06:16 And lets just cut them. So you can use Control + X on your
06:19 keyboard, or you could go to the home tab and find it there.
06:22 We'll go back and paste what we have here.
06:26 By going to the home tab, you can click paste, and there's a picture of Simon.
06:30 Can move that around as well. And if we wanted to, we could also go get
06:35 the instructions from that previous slide.
06:38 Down below, we have Please Make a Selection.
06:41 Click the border again, Ctrl + X, go back, Ctrl + V.
06:45 We'll put it right in the spot where it was removed from on the other slide.
06:51 Okay, looks good. Now we no longer need this original slide
06:55 that was imported from PowerPoint. We can right-click the thumbnail.
06:59 Choose delete answer yes that we're sure and we're now on the next question.
07:03 So if you want to previw that go ahead go back to the slide 5.3 click the preview
07:08 drop down choose this slide. See what it looks like.
07:12 See what happens when we make a correct or incorrect selection.
07:16 If we choose true for example and click Submit.
07:20 You did not select the correct response, okay?
07:23 We click continue. We actually can't do anything now.
07:26 It would automatically go on to the next slide.
07:28 So we can close our preview knowing that we have our first question in our quiz completed.
07:34 Your challenge now is to go through the remaining slide sin this quiz, the
07:38 remaining question slides, and create actual quiz slides here in Storyline from
07:44 the type of content you see on each slide.
07:47 After that, we'll be able to talk about inserting additional things like results
07:51 and so on.
07:52
Collapse this transcript
Creating a results slide
00:00 If you're going to create a quiz or include a quiz as part of your e-Learning project.
00:05 You might also consider adding a results slide where users who take the quiz will
00:10 be able to analyze their results when they're done.
00:12 That's what we're going to do in this movie.
00:14 But just before we do that, we should take a look at our homework.
00:17 Which was to create question slides based on each of the imported PowerPoint slides
00:23 in this particular project. If you did that, you can review with me.
00:26 If not, you can simply go to the Chapter5 folder of your exercise files and open up Orientation0504.
00:34 I've completed all of the questions and we can review them together.
00:37 Beginning with our True, False. Now, we created this in the previous movie.
00:41 We have a question at the top, we have our answers down below.
00:44 We can see the correct answer on the slide.
00:47 Users will not see this when they take the quiz.
00:49 They'll have to make a selection. At any time, we can edit our question
00:53 slides by going over to the right-hand side in the Question panel and click Edit True/False.
00:59 Now, in this case we can see all of the things that we set up in the previous
01:03 movie, including the Question, the Answers, the Feedback.
01:06 If we're going to have a results slide at the end, we may not need to have feedback
01:10 showing up for each question. So users don't need to know if they got
01:13 it right or wrong when they make their selection.
01:16 They can wait till the end and view the results.
01:18 So up here in the Display section, where we see Feedback we'll click the drop down
01:23 and choose None. Then we'll click Save and Close.
01:26 Let's review the next question which was a multiple choice question.
01:30 Here we have our question that we took from the slide.
01:32 And down below our possible answers. The one correct one is highlighted.
01:37 People again won't see this when they take the quiz.
01:40 Let's check out the options by clicking Edit Multiple Choice over here on the right.
01:46 Again, we have our question, we have our answers, the correct one is highlighted
01:50 with a radio button. Again, we might want to turn off feedback
01:53 for this one, so we'll click the drop-down by default, feedback is being
01:57 provided by the question. We can also do it as they make a choice.
02:01 Let's have None selected, though. And maybe you don't need to have the
02:05 answers shuffled around each time someone takes the quiz.
02:08 They can appear in the same order by clicking this drop-down and choosing None
02:12 as well. Notice the score down below, the default
02:16 ten points. We'll click Save and Close to move on to
02:19 the next slide. Over here we have a question that has
02:24 multiple correct answers. You can see them checked off with check boxes.
02:27 Lets click the Edit Multiple Response button that appears on the right-hand side.
02:32 And again we'll turn off the Feedback, I think this is a good one to shuffle up.
02:37 It's not a multiple choice with all the above as an option at the bottom.
02:42 So in this case, it might be good to shuffle.
02:44 So it appears differently each time the person takes the quiz.
02:47 We'll click save and close. Now this next one, 5.6, is where we
02:52 simply type in an answer. We did this in a previous movie when we
02:56 just threw in a question slide in the middle of our presentation.
02:59 It was a free form, it also had points assigned to it.
03:03 So, we've already done this. We'll skip onto the next one, which is 5.7.
03:07 In this one, you can see we have matching.
03:09 And in this case we're going to be dragging and dropping the correct
03:13 response with whatever appears in the lefthand column.
03:16 Again, we can edit the matching drag and drop by clicking the button.
03:20 There's all of the choices that matches down the right.
03:23 These are in the right order, they'll be shuffled around when we get to taking the quiz.
03:28 Let's turn off the Feedback for this as well, and we'll click Save, and Close.
03:33 Alright here's another that's kind of interesting using Hotspots.
03:37 You can excuse my drawing here for the various incorrect and correct Hotspots.
03:42 Let's take a look at the Edit Hotspot button, which will display our graphic,
03:47 which was brought in. Now, if you were able to find it in the
03:51 Exercise Files, it's the pie chart that you can import here by choosing the image
03:56 with the Choose Image button. And then we have our question over here
03:59 on our left. And you can see A here is right, if we
04:03 select it, it's highlighted. The rest are wrong answers.
04:06 There's our feedback down below. Again, we might want to hide that
04:09 feedback if we're going to have results at the end anyway, so we'll choose None
04:13 and we'll click Save and Close. Alright, the next slide, as you can see,
04:18 is where the results are supposed to go. When we create a results slide, though, a
04:22 new slide will be created, so we really won't need this one.
04:26 Let's go ahead and insert the new slide, right from the Slide section.
04:29 Click New Slide, again, Quizzing should be selected, but this time, we'll click
04:34 the Results Slides tab. Now in this case, we have some options,
04:38 Graded Results, where they'll see a percentage and a score.
04:42 If you're doing a survey, you might want a Thank You slide, or you might start
04:46 from scratch. Let's go to our Graded Results Slide and
04:50 click Insert. This does insert a new slide.
04:54 You can see it down here. So we wont need that placeholder slide
04:57 when we're done. Here are all the questions and in the
05:00 quiz you can see they're all checked off. The one that's not is our free form
05:05 question that we have in a different scene, but if we wanted to include it, we
05:09 can include multiple quizzes in the results.
05:13 By clicking that checkbox it gets included.
05:16 We'll leave it out if we just want to leave it as a free form.
05:18 Down below we can choose what our Passing Score's going to be.
05:21 Let's say people need to get 90% to pass. We can also create a timed quiz by
05:27 choosing End quiz after clicking that check box and decide how long they get to
05:32 complete the quiz. Maybe they get Five minutes, in this case.
05:36 The timer begins with the first question. The timer format, you can see, is Elapsed.
05:41 When we click the drop-down, we can have it invisible, not show the time, and you
05:46 can show the time remaining, so it's counting down.
05:49 Lots of different options there. Let's go with remaining, and click OK.
05:53 Okay, and now you can see your results slide.
05:55 Its going to display your score what the passing score is.
05:58 And the result down below. There's also a Review Quiz button.
06:02 We can move that over for example if we wanted to and people can click this
06:06 button if they want to review their answers.
06:09 Alright, time to save our changes up here and review this.
06:13 Let's go to 5.9, right click and choose Delete, we don't need that anymore.
06:19 We'll say yes, that we're sure, and down below, the last slide is simply a thank
06:24 you slide, which we can leave. Alright, to test this out, we'll need to
06:27 preview the entire scene. Let's go up to Preview, choose This Scene
06:33 and you can see there's actually ten slides that will be compiled and prepared.
06:37 And we'll be able to take our quiz once we're ready.
06:41 Alright there's our quiz we'll click Next or let the timer run out.
06:46 Next we'll click Take Quiz. There's our True, False so we know the
06:49 correct answer here is false. Let's make an incorrect choice, and you
06:53 can see there's no feedback, next we'll click Submit.
06:58 On we go to the next one, How many hours of use can we get?
07:01 Okay, I think it's up to 20. I'll select that and Submit.
07:06 Which of the following are top-selling? Let's get this partially right.
07:09 Choose the Bulb and the Panel and submit. Here's where we get to type in our answer.
07:15 I think its one mile. We have it setup in the question that it
07:20 could be the number one or the word one either would be acceptabole.
07:24 Submit this is the one that we did not go in and edit and turn off feedback so you
07:29 can see we are getting immediate feedback.
07:32 Clicking continue takes us to the next slide where we need to match things up.
07:36 So, just for the sake of time, we'll match things up just as they are knowing
07:40 that we're going to get this wrong. And there's to many options to show up in
07:45 one slide here, so we have the scroll bar, no problem.
07:48 And if we needed to we can scroll up and down the list.
07:51 But again, for the sake of time, let's just join them all as is, and click Submit.
07:56 Here's our Hotspots, now, when we click on of the pieces of pie you can see it
08:01 gets this marker. There's our timer at the top running down.
08:05 I think it's this one here. I'm going to click that before I click Submit.
08:10 And here's the results, passing score is a 90%.
08:13 You can see my score a 54.54%, 30 points out of a possible 49.5 as a passing mark.
08:22 So the result is I did not pass. There's my review quiz button.
08:26 We're only viewing this one scene so let's Close the Preview.
08:30 And that's a quick look at the various question types, but adding the results
08:35 slide so that we can check out how we did on the quiz when scoring is applied.

Saving time with question banks
00:00 If quizzing is something you think you'll be doing on a regular basis, creating
00:03 question slides. Maybe even reusing them in other projects.
00:07 You might consider using a question bank. That's what we're going to look at now
00:11 with our new hire orientation project here.
00:14 The question bank is a place where you can go to create your questions.
00:17 Bring question slides in that you might already have.
00:20 Even content slides if you wanted to. That way you can pick and choose the ones
00:24 you want to add to your project when you need them.
00:27 And you can even import them into other projects.
00:30 So every single project you create has one default question bank.
00:34 You can find it by going the scenes drop down.
00:37 And at the bottom of the last scene You'll see question banks.
00:41 There's our one default. And you can see the name is question bank 1.
00:45 Now, we can modify the name, we can go there to start creating or adding
00:49 question slides. Let's do that by clicking question bank one.
00:53 Notice it opens up a tab, we're looking at the scene, we can click to add the
00:57 first slide. Another way to get there is to go to the
01:00 story view tab. From here, you'll see a scenes group on
01:04 the ribbon, including a question banks drop down.
01:06 Give it a click, and you can go to question bank one from here, create a new
01:11 question bank, or manage question banks. And we're going to start with going right
01:16 to question bank one. So this is a different view now, and
01:20 you'll know some links at the top. There are no questions yet in our default
01:23 question bank but we can add our first graded or survey question by clicking
01:26 these links. We can also import questions that already
01:30 exist in this project. Also at the top you'll see an insert
01:34 section where you can added graded or survey questions, create a new slide,
01:38 could be a content slide, doesn't have to be a question slide.
01:41 And import question from here as well. Let's go to import questions right from there.
01:46 And you'll see all of the slides in your project.
01:49 Including your content slides. As we scroll through our project you can
01:53 see none of them are selected. But as we get down a little further into
01:56 our project and into the marketing section, or scene, you can see there's a
02:01 text entry slide. That's a question slide, we might want to
02:04 pop it into the question bank. As we go a little further down as well,
02:08 we have all of our quiz slides. We can click Include All to select them
02:12 all, and then Deselect the ones that we don't need to include in our question bank.
02:17 These first two are not actually question slides and we don't necessarily need them.
02:22 Same thing for the very last one, which is just a Thank You message for taking
02:26 the quiz. Alright, so with all of those selected we
02:29 click OK, and they get imported into our question bank.
02:33 So just give them a second to get imported, and then we'll continue on,
02:37 there they all are. So you can see we have all of our
02:40 questions, there's slides that we can go to to edit if we wanted to, make changes
02:45 to them. We can move them around so we can
02:48 re-order them if we wanted to. As you select them you'll notice the
02:51 triggers over here. on the right can be expanded, all of the
02:55 slide properties as well. So we have access to all of our question
02:58 slides in one convenient location, our question bank.
03:02 Maybe we should rename this, though. Alright, let's go back to our question
03:05 banks drop down and choose manage question banks There's question bank one.
03:10 There are buttons for creating new question banks, editing the existing one.
03:14 Or if we wanted to duplicate this one and make a few changes here and there so we
03:18 have two versions. Or we could go to this next button to
03:21 rename it. Let's give it a click and let's call this
03:23 orientation questions. There we go.
03:28 Now, we can hit Enter which will save it and close up this window.
03:31 Before we do that, though, notice there is a delete button if you want to delete
03:35 a question bank. So we'll just press Enter.
03:37 That saves up our new name. It appears on the tab as orientation
03:41 questions, now. And that's great, we have a our question bank.
03:44 Which means if we had a project that didn't have a quiz section we could start
03:49 drawing from our question bank. So we can actually import or add slides
03:54 to our project from the question bank. Let's see how that's done.
03:57 Let's go back to our Story View here and we'll go down to our Quiz scene.
04:02 So you might need to Scroll up to see it but there's Quiz.
04:06 We'll go right to the first slide, Double-click it and that Opens it up.
04:09 Now if I wanted to insert a new slide here I could go to New Slide > go to Quizzing.
04:16 And you'll notice a draw from bank tab. From here, I can choose the question bank
04:22 I want to go to. I only have one.
04:25 Include all the questions if I wanted to, or I could just draw them randomly.
04:29 You can see over here, they'll appear randomly in the quiz I can move them around.
04:35 So if I didn't want to draw them randomly, I could do that.
04:38 Or I can also pick and choose which ones by clicking this drop down and choosing a number.
04:42 Now I have these already in my particular quiz scene here, so I don't need to
04:47 insert any, but that's how it's done In a project.
04:50 What about a new project, where you actually don't have any questions yet?
04:54 You can reuse these by importing them. So let's do that.
04:58 We'll go up to, and you might want to change your changes here, click the Save
05:02 button, and we'll open up a different project now.
05:05 A volunteer orientation project. So let's go to our (SOUND) articulate
05:09 button in the top left corner. We'll go to Open.
05:13 Go to the chapter five folder where you'll find volunteer orientation one.
05:17 Click it, and click open. So this is a different project.
05:21 It's a different set of slides for new volunteers to the organization.
05:25 So if we wanted to double click the first slide and check it out.
05:28 Okay, great. Let's go to our Scenes drop-down.
05:31 We have a quiz scene which actually doesn't have any slides except this title slide.
05:36 Let's import those questions that we have existing in a question bank in our other project.
05:42 Okay, to do that, we need to go up to the Articulate button, down to Import, go to
05:47 Storyline, as if we were going to import a Storyline project.
05:51 Remember it's orientation 0505, so we double click it.
05:55 And eventually we'll see all of the slides in that project.
05:58 What we really want though are the question bank slides, so we can pick and
06:02 choose what's going to come in. First, we'll make sure nothing is
06:05 selected by choosing none at the top. Then we'll scroll down.
06:09 You'll notice we have our quiz section but we also have Our question bank called
06:13 Orientation Questions. So we can pick and choose what we want to include.
06:18 Maybe we want everything but the one in the middle here.
06:20 So we'll click the first one, hold down Shift, click the last one, hold down your
06:24 Ctrl key to, let's say this, which of the following multiple option.
06:29 Slide we don't need, we'll select all of those, click import, and they will be
06:34 imported into our existing project. So if there's already a variable with the
06:40 same name in the project, text entry, you can see this, we can copy and rename, or
06:44 we can merge them together. We'll choose merge.
06:47 Same thing, there's already a variable, you can see that.
06:51 Keep clicking until we get them all in, and there we go.
06:54 So we just brought them all into our quiz from another question bank in another project.
07:00 Again if we wanted to work with this question bank we can go down to it.
07:05 Notice we have the orientation questions though?
07:07 Our existing question bank is empty so in that case typically what you want to do
07:12 is go to Story View > Question Banks and Remove Question Bank 1 if you're not
07:18 going to use it. So we'll go to Manage Question Banks.
07:21 There it is selected, it's empty. When we hit delete, we have to click Yes
07:25 to confirm, and then close it up. And we've got all our question in the
07:29 question bank ready to be reused in another project.
07:33 So, I think you can how using question banks can help you stay organized with
07:36 your question slides, but also save you some time and effort allowing you to
07:41 reuse them in other projects.

6. Publishing Your Project
Preparing to publish your project
00:00 This entire chapter is going to be dedicated to publishing your project,
00:04 that is getting it out to the masses. So your users can start learning.
00:08 Before you do that though, you'll want to make sure that everything's in order,
00:13 content on your slides, links, triggers, etc.
00:17 So we're going to review slides, we're going to preview as well, to make sure
00:21 everything is working properly before we publish.
00:24 We don't want to publish a project, find out we have errors, have to go back, fix
00:27 them and republish. So let's work with this project called
00:31 Orientation Final. You'll find it in the chapter six folder
00:34 of your exercise files. It'll open up in here in story view.
00:38 We'll go to the first slide here, our welcome slide, and double click it.
00:42 Things that I like to do before I publish, review the content on the slide
00:46 looks good, look at the labeling down below on my timeline, that's great.
00:51 I have an issue over here on the left-hand side, the second slide is untitled.
00:56 And that happens quite often when you import slides from PowerPoint, for
00:59 example, like we did. So let's double-click the text below the
01:02 thumbnail, and we can type in something that makes more sense.
01:05 This is a slide where the learners going to have a decision to make going to
01:09 the training or going directly to the quiz.
01:11 So, if we type something like decision slide and press Enter, you'll notice it
01:17 appears down in the bottom right hand corner now, that's our slide.
01:21 That makes more sense, also if we look at the timeline, things are labeled like the
01:26 title, the quiz pick, but there's a text box that just says text box.
01:31 And you'll see that by default when you start adding things like text boxes.
01:34 They're just named by default text box one, two, three etc.
01:38 Well, this one when we select it is actually this text box, that allows or
01:42 tells people, to make a selection. So let's double-click Text Box on the
01:47 timeline, and type in something more descriptive.
01:50 Make Selection Text, and press Enter. That's better, We want to save our
01:57 changes on the fly as we move through our project fixing things up, so we don't
02:02 have to go back if something were to go wrong and re-fix things.
02:06 On we go to the next slide everything looks good there and so on, and so you
02:09 want to go through all of your slides for example, if we click the drop down and go
02:13 to the organization and we look at the orc chart where we have a hot spot over
02:18 simon lodeen's name. It says click Simon's image perfect.
02:22 But you may have noticed, in the quiz section, if you've been following along,
02:26 and if we go to the third slide here, true or false question.
02:30 Notice Simon's name is spelled incorrectly.
02:32 You will see squiggly lines that are things that are not recognized in the dictionary.
02:36 And if you wanted to, you could check spelling for example.
02:41 You have the spell checker at your disposal, like you would in PowerPoint.
02:45 But these are not really typos, they're just not in the dictionary, including
02:48 Simone's name. That is a typo and it's not in the dictionary.
02:52 We're going to take out the e, fix that up, and click outside to lock it in.
02:57 Better save that change up as well. So that's the kind of thing you're
03:01 looking for as you're going through each of the slides in your project.
03:05 Fixing up content, typos. Now it's time to see if this actually
03:08 works, if slides show up in the right order, they're linked properly, the
03:12 triggers are working. So that involves previewing.
03:16 If we go up the published section here and we've already previewed individual
03:20 slides and scenes what we haven't done yet is to preview the entire project,
03:25 that's the only way we're if it's going to work properly.
03:27 So we can click the preview button or press F12.
03:30 From the dropdown you'll see that entire project is also an option, so let's
03:35 choose that. It's going to prepare all of the slides
03:39 in the project, all 26 of them will be prepared to be previewed, and this is
03:44 exactly how it's going to work for your learners.
03:47 There's our background music, the narration.
03:51 >> We're so happy to have you on board (MUSIC).
03:55 >> That text disappears. Maybe we might want to fix that up.
03:58 When we click next, it goes to the next slide, perfect.
04:02 Make a selection. We could go to the training or take the quiz.
04:05 As we're deciding, all of a sudden, the next slide shows up, that's an issue.
04:09 So, it looks like the slide's automatically moving to the next slide.
04:12 Same thing there for the title, which might be okay.
04:15 This one does stop and wait for us to make a selection.
04:17 Now at any time we can edit right on the slide that we're looking at.
04:22 So if we go back to the previous one here, we can go up to Edit Slide, it'll
04:26 take us out of the preview directly to the slide that needs fixing.
04:31 This is our decision slide that we retitled.
04:34 Notice down below, and this is something we haven't talked about yet, each slide,
04:38 which can have multiple layers, this one's a single layer, has this little
04:42 button off to the right. These are the properties for the slide.
04:45 All of the triggers look okay. But if we go to the Properties and click
04:50 it, notice the slide advances automatically.
04:53 We don't want that to happen. We want the slide to advance by the user.
04:59 So we choose that. We still have our previous and next
05:02 buttons and the player defaults, so that's okay.
05:04 When we click OK, that issue we just saw should not happen.
05:09 Save our changes, and re-preview this. So again, you can press F12 on your
05:15 keyboard if you like, or just click the preview button, same thing.
05:18 All 26 of your slides will be prepared again, and you'll arrive at the first
05:23 slide, ready to view your presentation. (MUSIC)
05:27 >> Hi, and welcome. >> So let's just wait a second and see
05:30 if this stays, waiting for us to make a selection.
05:33 Beautiful, everything is good there. Let's go to the training now.
05:37 That one will automatically disappear and that's okay after a certain amount of time.
05:42 We'll let that go away, where do we want to go next?
05:46 Well, let's start with the organization. Takes us to the organization, little bit
05:50 of animation there. I'll click Next.
05:54 There we go, there's Simon, click Simon's image it says, to hear a message.
05:58 >> Hi, I'm Simon >> And automatically it's on to the
06:02 next one. And our pie chart shows up, we can click Next.
06:07 Nothing here, what's going on here? Well, it's just taking a little bit too
06:11 long for that table to appear. Let's click Edit Slide right from here.
06:16 Down on the timeline, you can see the table.
06:18 It's not showing up for five seconds, that's the beauty of a preview.
06:22 We can go in here and fix that up. It should show up maybe after about a
06:26 second or even less. So that's fixed up.
06:30 If we go back to this slides everything was cool there, it did show up quickly
06:34 but here we had issue first of all it says click all we had to do was hover.
06:38 Lets change that to hover over and then it disappeared too quickly again we
06:46 should go to the properties for this slide.
06:49 There's that automatically again. We'll click the drop down and choose By
06:52 User and click OK. You may have to do that for many of the
06:56 slides in this particular project. You get the process.
07:01 You're going to save your changes, fix issues on the fly, and then re-preview
07:05 the entire project each time until it's exactly the way you want.
07:10 Once it is working the way you want, then you'll be able to go ahead and publish it
07:15 in the format of your choosing. So let's preview this one more time.
07:20 This time we'll go to the next slide right away and go directly to the quiz.
07:27 We'll click next Take the quiz, we do have an opportunity to go back if we
07:31 wanted to. Simon's name's spelled correctly.
07:35 Everything looks like it's ready to go. The counter's counting down, we have a
07:39 link to resources, we make our selection, Submit and so on.
07:45 So let's close the preview. I think you've got the idea.
07:48 The content is important, the labeling might be important.
07:52 So for example, this title slide organization is untitled.
07:55 I'm going to type in title slide. These are the kinds of things you want to
08:00 tidy up and save before you're ready to publish.
08:03 If everything's working properly, you're ready to move on to the next movie.
08:07

Publishing your project for web and mobile
00:00 So you've reviewed and previewed your project here in Storyline, everything's
00:04 in order and ready to be published. Let's begin with the most popular option
00:09 and that is to publish to the web. Real learners will go to a website to
00:13 take in your training. We'll go to the Publish button up here in
00:18 the Publish section of the Ribbon with the Home tab selection.
00:21 To publish our Orientation final project found in the Chapter 6 folder of your
00:27 Exercise files. Next, we'll make sure that web is
00:30 selected, and you'll notice a number of fields and options to choose from.
00:34 First of all, the title is going to be the same as the title of our first scene,
00:39 which is new hire orientation. Course, we could go in there and change
00:43 it if we wanted to.Of cWe could add a description if we needed to.
00:46 I'm going to type in Training for New Hirs at kinetECO.
00:53 The folder or location where you want to save all of the files to, keeping in mind
00:58 that you will end up with a folder full of files and assets and so on that will
01:03 be Then upload it to your website by your Web Master.
01:06 So you can choose a location using the Browse button.
01:09 I'm going to go directly to the desktop, so it's easy for us to find afterwards.
01:13 Now, here's an important option. When you're going to be publishing either
01:17 to the Web or online, for example, you might want to include HTML5 output.
01:23 This will allow people to view your training on their mobile devices.
01:27 So if they're on a tablet for example or a smartphone or there's iPad, a specific
01:32 option for the iPad. We can select these.
01:36 We can even allow for downloading so people can view when they are offline.
01:40 They don't need to connect to the website.
01:42 If that's an option you're comfortable with, click that check box.
01:46 Other options include, the storyline player, so we can access the player
01:49 options directly from here by clicking the storyline player link.
01:53 Go ahead and give it a click and you'll see all of those options and the preview
01:57 on the right hand side of what the player's going to look like.
02:00 So we saw this in an earlier lesson. If we wanted to, for example, at the seek
02:04 bar we could add back, leave it out, insert a logo if we wanted to, or a
02:09 copyright infringement, and so on. Now we've seen all of this before, but we
02:14 can access it while publishing as well. Let's just click Cancel to keep the
02:18 existing options. Also we can adjust the quality, do you
02:22 want it to be the highest quality? And in that case, create a very large
02:27 file size? Or is the size of what you're going to be
02:30 uploading to your website important and the quality less important.
02:34 Click this link to choose the standard. As you can see, it's right down the
02:38 middle, right between smaller file and higher quality.
02:41 The audio bitrate can also be adjusted, the default being 48.
02:47 And the image quality, images that you see in your project is up around 80%.
02:52 As soon as we start adjusting any of these, we get into a custom option.
02:56 Let's say our video quality needs to be higher.
02:58 We could drag the slider up to, say, 7. We're looking at a custom Quality setting.
03:04 The bit rate, you can move it all the way up, you can see, to 160.
03:08 I like 128. And the image quality needs to be high.
03:12 Now, as I move these around, especially to the right, I'm going to end up with
03:16 larger file sizes, and the upload may become a bit of a problem.
03:21 So I'm going to move this back and if you want to go back to standard just go ahead
03:24 and click Standarad and everything goes back to the original setting.
03:28 We'll click OK. Once everything's been set up and ready
03:31 to go you click Publish and that's it. Slides will be generated the assets will
03:36 be generated. Everything that's needed.
03:39 By your webmaster to upload to a website, so people can start taking your web
03:42 training online. So I'll let it run its course.
03:46 Eventually, we'll have some options to view it directly from this window, or we
03:50 could go to the location such as our desktop to access the files.
03:55 Notice the images need to be optimized as well.
03:58 In a moment we'll be ready to preview this.
04:00 (SOUND) There we go, the publish was successful.
04:05 Congratulations. Now over here on the right hand side we
04:07 could view the project if we wanted to. We could email it.
04:11 Or send it to an FTP site. This is typical when working with web
04:15 masters, for example. We'll upload it to a FTP site where the
04:19 webmaster can then take it and put it up on the website and get it ready for our
04:23 users to start taking our project or learning.
04:28 We can ZIP it up if we wanted to and then that way we have the ability to put it on
04:32 a portable device like a USB stick and move it around.
04:36 We even go directly to the folder from here.
04:39 Let's click View Project. Now clicking this is actually going to
04:43 launch your default browser, remember we did choose to publish to the web so it's
04:47 going to be viewed in a web browser. Your web browser opens up with the very
04:54 first scene. (SOUND) Orienation or so.
05:01 Clicking next takes us to the next slide. We can branch right to the quiz or view
05:06 the training clicking next. Lets go to marketing.
05:11 Everything working in order. Clicking next to reply to anyone of our
05:17 blog post. Clicking next takes us to the video.
05:20 If we want to click to play the video, we can do that.
05:22 >> It's happening all over the world, every day, people are harnessing the
05:26 power of the sun. >> Clicking next takes us to your
05:28 question where we could type in an answer here.
05:32 Press Enter. That's right, click Continue.
05:35 And now we can start over if we wanted to or go directly to the quiz this being the
05:39 last scene. Clicking next Let's take the quiz.
05:44 Timer starts. Counting down.
05:46 And we need to start answering. So everything's working in order.
05:51 We can close up our browser or simply close up the page.
05:54 I'm just going to minimize this. Takes us back to Articulate Storyline,
05:59 where we can now choose how we're going to send this off to the person who needs
06:03 to upload it to the web. Or simply close it up, and that's how we
06:06 publish to the Web, including options for mobile devices by publishing to HTML5.

Publishing a project to disk
00:00 Another popular option for publishing your e-learning project here in Storyline
00:04 is to publish it to a disk. Could be a CD, DVD, or even hard disk.
00:10 In other words, a local computer. We're going to explore this option now,
00:14 continuing work with our orientation final project, found in the chapter 6
00:18 folder of your exercise files. Again, we'll go up to the publish button
00:22 in the publish section on the ribbon. And this time, we're going to go down to CD.
00:28 Don't be fooled by that. Choosing CD does allow us to copy or
00:33 create a published project on DVD or even a local computer if we wanted to.
00:40 Just like we saw when publishing to the web, we'll see the title based on the
00:45 first scene, New Hire Orientation, that's fine.
00:47 If we wanted to change it, we could. The description that we added when
00:51 publishing to the web also appears here now.
00:53 So if you were following along in the previous movie, you see this.
00:56 If you weren't you need to type it in. We can also choose the location where
01:01 we're going to create the final product. So although we'll be burning it to a CD
01:06 or a DVD or copying it to a computer hard drive, we'll choose the folder or
01:11 location where the end result will appear in the meantime.
01:16 Again, we can access the StoryLine player options and quality options just as we
01:20 did in the previous movie. When we're ready, we click Publish.
01:25 Now again, it's going to go through each of the slides and generate them.
01:29 Remember there are slide contents or assets as well to be included.
01:34 When we're done, we'll see the same options we saw when publishing to the
01:38 web, and that is, we'll have an opportunity to view the training.
01:41 We could also email it (SOUND). We could also send it to an FTP site, zip
01:47 it up if we wanted to. Or we could go to the folder itself and
01:51 open it up. If we view the project, notice when we
01:55 hit the buttons what happened. We don't open up our default web browser.
01:58 In this case, we're just looking at the player.
02:00 (MUSIC) >> Hi and welcome to Kinet.
02:03 >> And this is what our users will see when they go to open this up from a CD, a
02:08 DVD, or On their own computer hard drive. We'll close that up.
02:13 Let's go to open folder and take a look at that.
02:16 I chose the desktop as a location. So, I'm going to be looking at my file explorer.
02:21 You can see on the desktop new hire orientation output is the name of the
02:25 folder that was created. And I see things like autorun.
02:29 That indicates to me when I pop in a CD or DVD into my drive on my computer It's
02:34 going to launch the training automatically.
02:36 That's good, there's all of the story content if we double click that folder,
02:40 you're going to see a lot of different content.
02:43 This is what appears on the various slides in our project.
02:46 So all of that's created for us, and stored in the location we'd chosen.
02:50 In my case, the Desktop. So this entire folder could then be
02:53 burned to a CD, a DVD, or simply copied to someone's local computer hard drive.
03:00 It's up to you, but, they'll be able to view it, using that media.
03:05 So that's another option, if you're not going to be publishing to the web.
03:08 Just simply create a disc, or copy it to a local hard drive for individual viewing.
03:14

Publishing to Articulate Online or a learning management system (LMS)
00:00 If your organization uses an LMS, or learning management system, to track
00:05 training for it's employees, to report on who's taking what training, who's passed,
00:10 who's failed, etc. And remained compliant with certain
00:12 standards like Scorm and AICC. You have the ability here in storyline to
00:18 publish to an LMS, and be compliant with those standards.
00:23 Alternatively, if you don't have an LMS there's an option that very similar.
00:26 We're going to look at those now as we continue working with our new higher
00:29 orientation project. Let's go up to the publish button, give
00:33 it a click. And next down the left-hand side we're
00:36 going to choose LMS to start. With this selected, you'll notice that
00:41 the title is taken directly from the first scene.
00:44 If you added a description in an earlier movie when publishing to another format.
00:49 That remains, as does the location you're going to be publishing to.
00:53 A folder will be created in that location.
00:55 And in this case, because we're publishing to an LMS, that folder will be
00:59 taking by the LMS expert, who would then post it to that location.
01:05 Down below you can also choose as we did when publishing to the web whether or not
01:09 to include options for mobile devices. So if your employees, for example, might
01:14 be learning on an iPad we can select an option to include HTML output for mobile
01:20 devices and iPads. And we can even allow them to download
01:24 our training. To use it offline.
01:26 So when they're not connected, they can continue using the learning project.
01:30 A little further down, because we're publishing to nlms, the properties have a
01:35 new option, and that's tracking. Tracking can be done using a results
01:40 slide like you see here. But when we click that link, we can get
01:43 into tracking and reporting and change it up Maybe you want to track the number of
01:48 slides people have viewed. You can choose that option.
01:52 And there might be a minimum number that need to be completed.
01:55 You can select that as well. I think we're going to track the results.
01:59 Because we do have a results slide. You can see it's in scene five.
02:02 5.9. It's the only results slide we have in
02:06 this project. It's a great way to track the actual
02:09 results of people taking the quiz. There's also a reporting tab over here on
02:13 the left hand side. And here's where we get into LMS compliancy.
02:18 Notice the options here from the dropdown include Scorm 1.2 also an older verison
02:24 Scorm 2004. There's AICC and Tincan API.
02:28 Those four options are available to use here in storyline.
02:31 And with reporting, we get to create a title, again taken directly from our
02:37 first scene in our project, New Hire Orientation.
02:40 The description is still there. An identifier is added for a course ID.
02:44 Which is very important in LMS situations.
02:47 Versions can also be added. If this is actually version 1.1 of this
02:52 training we could do that. And, as you can see down below, the title
02:55 and identifier for the LMS lesson score information is new hire orientation here
03:01 as well. And we can change that if we wanted to.
03:05 As far as LMS reporting goes, we can report on, as we click this drop down.
03:10 Past and incomplete. So did people pass the quiz?
03:14 Or did they simply not complete it? Did they pass or fail?
03:17 That's a popular option. There's also completed or incomplete
03:21 options and the opposite of past incomplete is completed fail.
03:25 I'm going to rename with Passed/Failed, I like the option, we'll click OK.
03:31 Under output options we can also change the LMS output and access reporting and
03:36 tracking as well. Whether you go to tracking or to the
03:40 output options. You can change those so you're going to
03:43 remain compliant based on what you're using in your learning management system.
03:47 What if you don't have an LMS though? In that case, you might consider using
03:51 Articulate Online. In this case you would sign up for a membership.
03:56 And have access to articulate online similar to and LMS notice that when we go
04:02 to publish here there's no location to choose from.
04:06 You need to have an account. Your account information goes down below
04:10 with a password and when you go to publish this you're going to be
04:14 publishing it to that online account. I'm going to change the name here from
04:18 New Hire Orientation to Kinet Eco, like so.
04:22 All of the other options are the same. That is publishing to an LMS, including
04:27 tracking for results. The only thing you don't see here is compliancy.
04:31 Notice we do have reporting. We also have tracking.
04:35 We don't see the compliancy option that you do with an LMS.
04:40 When you're ready to publish, you click Publish and off it goes to that account.
04:45 Again, you can sign up for an account and pay a monthly membership.
04:49 You can even try it out for a month. There's a free option.
04:52 At Articulate Online. Give it a shot.
04:55 See if it's something that will work for you and your organization.
04:59 Eventually though, all of your sites will be generated when you publish to this
05:02 location, and you'll be able to try it out.
05:06 Once your slides are prepared, and your images optimized, you'll be able to see
05:10 the size of the end result. And, the uploading, and the progress bar,
05:15 will let you know when everything's completed.
05:18 At that point, you'll be able to try it out.
05:22 So eventually, you'll get the message that the publish was successful.
05:26 There's only one option over here, and that is to manage the content.
05:30 Because it's posted online using your account, clicking this button is going to
05:34 take you to your default browser, it's going to open up a new window, And you'll
05:39 arrive at your location based on your membership, where you can start managing.
05:43 Including a button here to launch the content.
05:47 Notice down below, you have reporting options as well.
05:50 Articulate Online could be a separate course, so we won't get into the details.
05:54 But there's a lot you can do with this. And it's very useful for people who don't
05:58 have a learning management system. All right, let's minimize our browser to
06:02 go back. We'll click close to close up that window
06:06 and we return to our project. So that's publishing to an LMS or the
06:10 alternative which is Articulate Online.

Publishing handouts to Microsoft Word format
00:00 If you need to create a document out of your e-learning project, say for
00:05 handouts, you can do so by publishing to the Microsoft Word format.
00:09 That's what we're going to do right now. Still working with our orientation final
00:14 project found in the chapter six folder of your exercise files.
00:17 Again, we go up to the Publish button, and from here, we'll select Word.
00:23 Now, down at the bottom, we're going to see Word as an option to publish to.
00:27 Although we're not really publishing the project but really the slides and the content.
00:32 Again, the title will be the same, the description from previous publishings
00:37 will appear there, the same folder as a location.
00:40 Down below, though, under Properties, we see some new options here, such as,
00:44 Showing Layers. If you're using layers on your slides,
00:47 you're going to see them as separate entities in your Word document.
00:51 You can also include any slide notes you may have added.
00:55 Slide notes are typically for the person who is presenting or delivering the
00:59 training, and is not seen by the people using it.
01:03 So if you want to include those notes in the handouts, you can leave this checked.
01:07 If you don't, just deselect the check box.
01:10 And then what's going to happen is a document will be created with a series of screenshots.
01:15 Should those be Medium or Large? Of course with Medium you're going to use
01:20 less paper when you go to print this out. So I'm going to leave medium selected
01:24 click Publish, leaving the default folder to be created on my desktop.
01:30 And just like we saw with previous options like Publishing to the web or to
01:34 Publishing to a disk such as a CD. Each of the slides will be prepared and
01:40 published and eventually we'll end up with some options for viewing our new document.
01:46 Alright here it comes, Congratulations, published successfully.
01:49 Again we can view the document. This will be a word document.
01:53 We can email the document out to people, upload it.
01:56 Compress it using the zip option, or go directly to the folder.
02:00 Let's open the folder and see what we have on our desktop.
02:04 Again File Explorer opens up and you can see it's a single file called New Hire Orientation.
02:10 And it's in a folder called New Hire Orientation output, right on my desktop.
02:14 So double-clicking this will launch Microsoft Word and display the document.
02:19 As I mentioned earlier, the document will be a series of screen shots.
02:24 So down the left hand side, you can see we actually have, kind of like a table of
02:27 contents for navigating the various sections.
02:31 And the sections are the scenes that we created in our e-learning project.
02:35 We can jump to the various pages or slides.
02:38 So in this case you can see, because we chose medium screenshots we're able to
02:42 get more than one on a page. There's our welcome slide, as we scroll
02:47 down the decision slide. And, because this is a document in Word
02:52 we can now start editing. For example, we don't need this decision
02:56 slide to appear in the document. People aren't going to be clicking it and
03:00 moving on to the quiz or the training, so we can Select it, and we can hit Delete
03:04 to delete it. We can also Delete the text if we no
03:07 longer need it. Notice it disappears from our headings as well.
03:12 So you could go through the document, taking out what you don't need and
03:15 leaving what you do, and in the end you'll end up with a nice looking hand out.
03:19 You then save your document or if you wanted to, you could save it to another
03:23 format, like PDF here in Microsoft Word. And create handouts, print them out, or
03:29 simply deliver them in an electronic format.
03:31 That's the beauty of PDF. So we'll just minimize Word to return to Storyline.
03:36 Close up our File Explorer. And Close up the window that indicates we
03:42 have successfully published to the Word format.
03:45
