In this movie I'm going to explain how to edit a script and use material from a script and put that material in another document. So to follow along, open up the Castles_script, and if you don't have that, you can just watch here, and I think you will get things as we go forward. Double-click on Castle_script. Right off the bat I see we have these two square brackets. Let's get rid of those guys by putting my cursor there and going click, click, and that gets rid of them, and when I do that I get a message here, do you want to save now or do you want to save later? We'll hold off saving it. It doesn't save automatically. You've got to save as you go along.
Clicking down here a bit, it gives a description of JOSEPH. It says he's 40 something, modern, clean. So I want to put this inside of biography rather than have it here inside the action element. So I'm going to select that over there and scroll across that, do Ctrl+X or Command+X to cut it, and now I'm going to put that in the biography. To do that I go back to the Projects view here, and I'm going to click on this little New button here, and go down to Character Bio in this little list of things right there, and we'll name this one Joseph, Create.
You get a blank slate when the scene finally opens up. There we go. It's just this blank. I'll go Joseph: I will do Ctrl+V or Command+V to paste in the thing we just cut, like that. I don't know, let's be totally good about this and put a hyphen there, and now I'm done. I could click Save now, or I can go up here and click this X, and it's going to ask me don't you want to save this? Yeah I do. Okay. And that adds it to our Project. Then we go to Project. Take a look there, you will see that we are down here inside the Character Bios as Joseph.
Go back to Authoring by clicking on the Authoring view, back to this script where I see plusses here inside Story Plus. It means I can add this to the SetList, in this case, down here it's adding to the CharacterList, but here's the SetList. So I want to see if I can add this Architectural Creative Commons to the SetList. It's easy to do this, click the plus, it opens up a little View SetList thing. When I do that I need to say where this thing goes. Now this is a studio, and that was pre-selected for us because I've used this before. We normally pop up like this Location & Studio. You need to decide where it's going to be.
I'm going to say let's put this inside the Studio only for this guy. The BEACH, we want to put that as--let's say-- Location, and LIVING ROOM, Studio, and a PARK will be a Location. There we go. So now we've put those guys in specific places, which changes how they'll appear when we schedule these things, click OK, all right. And now that plus sign goes away. Let's scroll down a bit farther here. We're addressing the REPORTER character, and we've decided here that we're going to cut the REPORTER out. Sorry fellow. So you're going to be history here.
So I'm going to put my cursor here and click, and we get rid of this whole action description and the whole dialog of the REPORTER, so I will just scroll down past the REPORTER, past MR. DALTON, da-da-da. Past the REPORTER, and now we're going to go right to there, I am going to Shift+Click there, that selects everything between, and I'm going to press Delete. Goodbye REPORTER dialogue, all right. We're going to instead go back here, and now we see that we have the action description here, A man walks from the shadows. MR.DALTON 65, a large man, a serious man, he wears a suit.
There's another description of the man, so we're going to use that as a Bio. So I'll just select all this, like so. Ctrl+X, Command+X to cut it, and then I'm going to go back over to Projects and make a New Bio now. Go to New, Bio selected from the last time, and we're going to call this Mr. Dalton. There we go. I'll click Create. Type in Mr. Dalton:, Ctrl+V or Command+V to put that in there, and take some of the stuff out just to kind of clean up a bit, and click X, and now you can say, yep, we want to save that.
I'm doing back now to Authoring, back to the text, and now I'll say, MR. DALTON, I'll just say walks in the room, like so. And then let's move on down the line here, there is a little plus there. MR. DALTON, we don't have him in our CharacterList here in Story Plus. I'll click on that, that'll add him as a character. Here's a CharacterList, and there's Mr. Dalton right there, all caps here, but not all caps there. That's fine, click OK. Scrolling down some more, here is JOSEPH. We don't have him as a character yet, so click on him to add him as a character. Okay, that's fine to leave him with the List.
Here he says, how's the coffee? ...cold. Well, we know that we changed this when we actually shot this, so we'll call it It's cold, so I just type that in, so you can change that. And I'm thinking we've done all of this work here. Let's save it now so you don't lose any stuff, so I click on the Save Now. Moving down the line here, and I want to go a little farther into the script, I'm going to go down to the Page 6. We'll jump way ahead here. We've got some new characters and stuff like that, but I want to go down the line here to show you a couple of other things. Here it says EXT. AFTERNOON.
Well, you don't put the time after you say EXT., you put the location to SET. So this is going to make issues. If I click on plus, this could be a whole new SET called AFTERNOON. Well, we don't want that, so I'm going to select that like that and Delete it. And just to make sure it's clear that the SET is not called FLASHBACK, I'll go up to the right like this, and now I'll select BEACH, now we know that we got it exactly right. Space, hyphen, now it's asking me for a time, and I'll say AFTERNOON, that way we don't have any confusions.
So we go back and schedule this. All these guys will refer to the right thing. That will be the real set, that's the BEACH and the real time. So let's fix that, going a little bit farther, and let's see here. Here it says (eager), and that's a parenthetical comment, but I know that's in the wrong place. It's supposed to be matching the standards for scripts. That shouldn't be off to the left like that, flushed left with the beginning of the dialogue, so something went wrong here. Maybe it was translated over from Final Draft to Story. Let me go back there, just jump for some reason, there we go.
So I'm going to click here, and I'm going to right next to YOUNG JOSEPH here and press Return, and now I've got this line here saying what do you want to do next? If I right-click, I'm going to say Parenthetical, and that puts the parentheses where they belong, so it was in the wrong place. Now I type in (eager), like that, and I want to get rid of this, so the Parenthetical will really be Parenthetical Comment instead of Action. Here we go, not a horribly important thing, but I'll make sure you get that right. So it's basically how you fix things up here, how you add things to the lists, and what have you. And once you're done, you can click Save now, and go to File > Save, there we go.
That is how you Edit scripts. How you take material from scripts and use them in other documents and then how you save your work.
