Using Adobe SpeedGrade CC, powerful professional color correction and color grading is available to anyone with a Creative Cloud membership. In this course, professional colorist Patrick Inhofer offers a project-based learning experience to get you familiar with the SpeedGrade tools. In this movie I'm going to talk about one of the most popular terms you'll hear colorists use, besides maybe primaries and secondaries, and that term, is vignettes. What is a vignette? Well, vignette comes from a photography term and it's about, images where you have a nice clear picture in the centre, and it fades out on the edges like you see here in this example picture I pulled off of Wikipedia. I use vignettes all the freaking time,lll I'm not embarrassed to say it.
And what do colorists use vignettes for? Well, for two things mostly. One is to help you focus the eye, and I love using vignettes this way. If you do it right, you can't even tell there's a vignette. Sometimes you gotta toggle it on and off to make sure you actually applied a vignette, and when you do you're like oh wow look at that, it's really focusing my eye. The other thing then is that there's in this picture, here, is to really stylize the image to give it a very unique look and that point you're kind of going to go with a heavier looking Vignette, very obvious Vignette. And how do you create one? It's very, very simple.
You apply a mask and then, on the outside of the mask, you darken it. That's typically how a vignette is created. Usually they're done with circles and ovals. But personally one of my favourite techniques is to use kind of a formed, rounded triangle using three points, very rounded. Other times what you can do is follow the shape of a shadow on the image and use that to help you create a very natural looking vignette something if you don't if you want it to be more subtle that's what you might want to do.
So there you go when colorist and when I talk about using and creating vignettes, now you know what I'm talking about.
