Video: Advanced selection tools

Let's take a look at some more advanced selection tools. Up until this point we've just been Shift+Selecting and just selecting our faces and edges one at a time. There are some additional tools that SketchUp has that makes it easier to select multiple faces. So let's go ahead and take our house and Again, I'm going to select the edge at the very top of this roof. When you select an edge in the Edit menu an option will pop up at the bottom that says Edge, and this allows us to edit the edge.

Advanced selection tools

Let's take a look at some more advanced selection tools. Up until this point we've just been Shift+Selecting and just selecting our faces and edges one at a time. There are some additional tools that SketchUp has that makes it easier to select multiple faces. So let's go ahead and take our house and Again, I'm going to select the edge at the very top of this roof. When you select an edge in the Edit menu an option will pop up at the bottom that says Edge, and this allows us to edit the edge.

So we have a number of options here, but the one I'm looking at here is the selection options, and we can select Connected Faces, All Connected, or All on the same layer. But actually I'm not going to use this menu, because I want to show you another way of getting to this. So I want to make sure that this is selected and instead of selecting the Edit menu I'm going to right-click over it. When I right-click notice how we have our pop-up menu. Now this is what's called a context sensitive menu.

It will change depending upon what you have selected. In this case I want to scroll down and look at the Select menu. In this we have Connected Faces, All Connected, and All on the same layer. So let's take a look at how these work. So when I do select Connected Faces what it does is it will select those faces that are on either side of the edge, or In other words, those faces that are connected to each other through that edge. So in this case it selects either side of that edge or the left and right side of that roof.

If I want I can select Multiple Edges. So I select this, this, this, and this, and then If I right-click and go select Connected Faces, it will select the entire roof. Now there is another option as well. So Again, I'm just going to deselect and reselect that top of the roof and then right-click over that again. In this case we have Select>All Connected. Now what this does is it walks through the entire model and it selects anything that's remotely connected to that edge.

So if I select All Connected basically what it does is it selects the entire house. Well, not the entire house, because if I move that away notice how it doesn't select the windows or the doors. That's because those are separate objects. In fact, I just kind of hung those on the side of the house almost like a picture to just make it look like that. So they're not directly connected to the house. Now we have a very similar option for faces. So if I select a face such as this one on the side of the house, notice now we have under the Edit menu, we now we have one for faces.

This also shows up as a context sensitive menu. So I'm going to make sure that this Face is selected and then right-click over it and notice now we have a Select menu, very similar to what we had with Edges. Now we have a few more options here. So let's take a look at those. The first one is Bounding Edges. When I select Bounding Edges what it does is it selects those edges that border the face. So in this case it'd be these edges, or If I were to select, for example, the front portion of this roof, which is actually more of a triangle shape and selected the Bounding Edges, it would just select that triangle.

So I'm going to go ahead and reselect the side of this house and let's take a look at the next one. This one is called Connected Faces. So Again, this is very similar to what we have with edges. If I select this, it will select all faces that are connected to this. So let's take a look at how it works on the roof here. If I select this roof, right-click, Select>Connected Faces it will select any face that is connected through an edge. So it walks over this edge, selects this face, it walks over this edge, select this face, this edge.

Then even if we look underneath the roof we'll see it walks over this edge and it actually selects the whole underside of the roof. So, by doing that I can actually just move my roof up and down. So if I wanted to raise the roof of the house I can do that by selecting those. So I'm going to go ahead and deselect, and let's go ahead and just select another face here. The next one I want to show you is Select >All Connected, and this is pretty much exactly the same as what we had with edges. It will select the entire house and anything that is remotely connected to that face.

So Again, almost exact same operation as we had with the edge. Now the last one I want to show you is actually pretty cool and that is Select by Material. So let's go ahead and select this roof Again, and right-click over this and we're going to do All with the same Material. So now I have different materials on different parts of this house. So, for example, the roof has a roofing material on it. So if I select all with that same material, it'll select all of the roof parts of the house.

We can do the same for the patio. So, for example, if I select one of the faces on the steps that has a stoned material on it. So if I right-click over that, select All with same Material, it will select all of the steps as well as the patio which had that same material as well. You can see how this can be handy when you're adding materials to house. So, for example, if you wanted to change what the roof looked like you can select all the materials on the roof and then add maybe a tile or another type of material to it and it makes it very, very easy.

So as you can see these context sensitive menus allow you to select your faces and edges a lot more efficiently. So get in the habit of using them. They can become very handy for you.
