Contrast blend modes

In this video, we're going to take a look at the Contrast Blend modes. So, if I go to my Blend mode, you'll notice that in the last video we skipped over Glow and Soft Glow. We're going to be covering those in a separate video. So, let's go to Overlay. So, this mode can be a little tricky to understand. Essentially, this Blend mode will both lighten and darken the end results. It uses a combination of the Multiply and the Screen blending modes to achieve this. Note that 50% gray has no effect on the end result. It's essentially invisible. If a color is darker than 50% gray, then a Darkening blend mode is used. If a color is lighter than 50% gray, then a Lightening blend mode is applied. So, in order to achieve this, an overall lightening and darkening effect. Overlay uses the Screen blend mode at half strength on colors that are lighter than 50% gray, and uses the Multiply blend mode at half strength on colors that are darker than 50% gray.
