- Tip number four: Hiring is half the work. I truly believe that more than half of your job on set as the director or producer is accomplished in the hiring. Of course there is plenty of work to be done beyond finding the right crew, but what I mean is that if you hire all the right people, people with great attitudes that take their job on your project seriously and want to be there to help you succeed, well, they can easily be half of what you need to have a successful project in the long run. Having the right people in the right jobs can make all the difference in the world. And having the wrong person on your set can easily cause unnecessary dramas, become a distraction, and derail the production and generally undermine morale. And believe me, you need all the morale you can muster on a low budget project.
