Marketing and promo videos need to be mean and lean. That often means condensing long passages of speech, or dialogue down to the simplest sound bites, which means you're going to be jumping from one section of an interview to another. You can accomplish this with jump cuts, but they are jarring and they'll only work for some high energy styles. You could also use dissolves, which are traditional and effective, but can be somewhat boring and formal, or you could use some other transitional visual effect that's just right. Not every non-linear editor, even at the consumer level, generally has a healthy selection of transition effects to get us from one shot to another. Again, same as with the graphic text effects I mentioned in earlier chapter, your shot transitions should always feel organic, and never forced. Try to cut them in rhythm to the words, music, or general pacing of the piece. Transitions should go by so fast, smooth, or naturally, that the audience feels it more than they…
