Loading modified data

In this section, I'd like to talk about loading modified data. Some of the data that we have in the dimension tables will be static, but other types of data will be dynamic and will change from time to time. An example of static data would be many of the dimensions we use with time. There's seven days in a week, there's 12 months in a year. Those things are not likely to change. Other things are likely to change. If we use customer information as a dimension, things about a customer could change. A customer could move from one city to another city. A customer could change their email address or change their phone number. Sometimes when a dimension changes, we need to keep a record of the new data, the old data, and the date on which it changed. For example, if we had a list of products and each product belonged to a certain category and at some point, we decided to move certain products from one category to a different category.
