Understanding materials and lighting

In the second rendering focus movie, let's work on materials and place some lights in the scene. Now, under the render tools there is a material panel, which has a lot of nice features here. But we're going to keep this closed. And we're going to work over here under properties on the right side. I'm going to start assigning some materials. I'm going to start off with this backdrop here. So first I select it. And under Properties, we're going to go to Material. And since nothing's been assigned, it's just currently default. Now I want to leave default alone, and go ahead and just duplicate that. And I need to change the name. And, we'll just call this Backdrop. So we've made a copy of default and one of the problems that default had was it was pure white. So this is a word of warning, we gotta avoid any materials that are pure white or pure black because they just don't exist in the real world.
