QuarkXPress has always been the perfect tool for creating and publishing documents. In QuarkXPress 8 Essential Training, Jay Nelson—the publisher of Design Tools Monthly and a QuarkXPress expert—covers all the tools and features in this updated version of the program, from basic page layout to Flash integration and web page creation. Throughout this comprehensive training, Jay shows what's needed to produce professional-quality projects that integrate text, pictures, graphics, and tables. He also offers real-world page layout techniques that designers can apply to their own projects. Exercise files accompany the course.
Sometimes when you are working on a project in QuarkXPress you get to a point where you realize you need to change the page size, at other times you realize that you need to change the margins and the guides that apply to all the pages. Fortunately, changing that is pretty straightforward, to change the page size for the current layout, you simply go to the Layout menu and choose Layout Properties. That's where you can control quite a few different attributes of the layout. You can change its name, and what its output intent is, but here you can also change its size, and while you are at it, you can change its orientation, which means it is tall or is it wide.
Now you notice that these items over here are grayed out, because those you have to change in the master page. And now we go and see how to do that. I'm going to click cancel and we are going to switch to our master page. The easiest way to switch to the master page that this layout page is based on is to click this little icon down here that's a toggle to the master page. When I click it, we look at the master page. Here now, we can go to the Page menu and look at Master Guides & Grid. That's where you change the margin guides. The margin guides are these blue guides here that you can't alter on the layout page.
You can only alter them on the master page. And also, if you want to change the number of columns that are on the master page, you can change them here. If you happen to have an Automatic Text Box assigned to these master pages, these columns will also appear in that text box, look to see what I mean. We are going to click on OK, and now we have not only two columns setup on our page, but the text box within it also has two columns in it. So that when we go back to our layout page, we'll see that there are two columns here, and when we go to a page that actually uses the automatic text box, you'll see that that box is now in two columns as well.
You can change it back just as easily, by going to the master page, Page > Master Guides & Grid, back to 1 Column, OK, and now back to our layout page, and we see that it looks the way it did before, and that's really all there is to changing the page size, and the margin guides, and column guides for a given layout.
