QuarkXPress has always been the perfect tool for creating and publishing documents. In QuarkXPress 8 Essential Training, Jay Nelson—the publisher of Design Tools Monthly and a QuarkXPress expert—covers all the tools and features in this updated version of the program, from basic page layout to Flash integration and web page creation. Throughout this comprehensive training, Jay shows what's needed to produce professional-quality projects that integrate text, pictures, graphics, and tables. He also offers real-world page layout techniques that designers can apply to their own projects. Exercise files accompany the course.
Because QuarkXPress can output to many different kinds of file formats including PDF, EPS and printing on paper, Quark refers to a collection of output options as Output Styles. To make it easy to manage and edit all of your Output Styles, Quark gathers them into one place, under the Edit menu > Output Styles. If you know you want to be working with a PDF Output Style, you can use this pop-up menu here to show just the PDF Output Styles. The rest of this window works just like all the other style editing windows.
You can create a new style from scratch, you can edit an existing style, you can duplicate a style and make changes to it and re-save it with a new name, you can import styles from elsewhere, export the ones you have got, and of course delete, cancel, and save. If you select one of these, for example Print, you can either edit it or more likely duplicate it, give it a new name, make your changes, and then save it. Now, it appears in the list with the other PDF Output Styles and it will be available every time you choose to export a layout as PDF.
These Output Styles are stored with your QuarkXPress setup on your computer and they are available to every project that you work with. If your output provider has a specific set of output requirements, they can provide them to you in a small Output Style file and then you can import it here. Similarly if you create a new Output Style for your work-group, you can export it here to share it with them in this similar fashion. The next time you find yourself in a printing or output dialog box and you have made a bunch of changes to the options that are in there, remember that you can save that Output Style as a new one and save yourself a lot of work later on, and even share those settings with other people in your work-group, so they don't have to recreate them from scratch.
