Video: Selecting and grouping multiple objects

When working with multiple objects that are combined to create the look of a single object, it may be helpful if you can take those multiple objects and combine them into one, so you can work with it, like a single object. Here is what I mean. We are going to continue to work with our catalogue here, and we are going to focus on page 1 in the top-left corner. As we hover over the graphic, you can see there is a character in the middle, the letter M, and down below, as we move around, you see the border around the outside of the graphic. Let's zoom into that. We'll just quick either one of those objects, and use our Zoom slider Plus sign to zoom right in, where we can get a good look.

When working with multiple objects that are combined to create the look of a single object, it may be helpful if you can take those multiple objects and combine them into one, so you can work with it, like a single object. Here is what I mean. We are going to continue to work with our catalogue here, and we are going to focus on page 1 in the top-left corner. As we hover over the graphic, you can see there is a character in the middle, the letter M, and down below, as we move around, you see the border around the outside of the graphic. Let's zoom into that. We'll just quick either one of those objects, and use our Zoom slider Plus sign to zoom right in, where we can get a good look.

I am going to go all the way up to 200%. Now when we click just behind the M, you can see that's a separate object that can be manipulated. So, for example, if we accidentally clicked and drag, you can see now the M is not centered anymore. Ctrl+Z will get us back. So to avoid moving a part of this object, it really should be combined into one, and that's called grouping. And all we have to do is make sure that both those items are selected. So we'll click the M first. Now hold down your Shift key. When you see the border around the graphic in behind, hold down your Shift key and click, and now you've got both of them selected.

You will see handles around each of the objects. Now we are going to go to the Arrange group, right here on the Home tab. You don't have to go into formatting your Picture tools or Drawing tools. It's available here in the Arrange group you'll see it right at the top right, Group. Ctrl+Shift+G is the keyboard shortcut to group these objects together. When you click Group, it's now as if the two objects are combined into one. So, for example, if we go to the M and click, we can still make changes to it - we can change the text, and so on, but look what happens when we click and drag.

The objects moved together because they're grouped together, and you're going to see these little Xs around the outside. It's is a little hint that there is more than one object that's combined or grouped into one. If at anytime you need to manipulate one of the objects separate from the others, you can ungroup them. So just clicking once selects all of the objects. Click Ungroup in the Arrange Group, and now you will see those Xs disappear, and you've got access to any of the individual objects that might need editing. When you're ready to group them back together, simply click the Group button or use the keyboard shortcut.

So that's all there is to grouping objects. It can save you a number of headaches, if you're working with multiple objects that are combined into one, and you need to move those combined objects as a single object.
