How to use the exercise files
00:00If you're a Premium member of the lynda.com Online Training Library or if you're
00:05watching this tutorial on a DVD-ROM, you have access to the exercise files to use
00:10throughout this title.
00:11So I've downloaded the exercise files onto my Desktop, and I'm going to
00:15double-click them. And here they're laid out by chapter, so you see Chapters 1
00:20through 11, inside of the chapter there are the Premiere Elements files.
00:25In the assets folder are all the assets that we're going to be using.
00:28We'll just take a quick look.
00:29Here's all of our assets, and assets are the video files, music, and photos that
00:37we're going to be using throughout this course.
00:39So, I've showed you where the assets are, but really all you need to go and do
00:43is open the project files, click on the Premiere Elements project, and
00:47double-click it to open.
00:51Premiere Elements will launch.
00:53Now, you might have this little dialog box that tells you Where is this broll atmosphere?
01:00So what's this asking you to do is to re-link the footage.
01:04Because I built these projects on my computer and they transferred to another
01:08computer, such as yours, the links have been broken, but that's easy to fix.
01:12Let's go into the assets here, and we're looking for broll_sb_atmosphere_94, and
01:18let's find that. And we'll give ourselves a little bit of room here. And here it
01:24is, broll_sb_atmosphere_94.
01:28So then just click Open and your Elements file has opened, and everything is
01:34ready to go for you to learn Adobe Premiere Elements.
01:37So because we've found the exact file that it needed, Elements is smart enough
01:40to go and find the rest of the footage being used in this project. And once
01:45again, because I made this on my computer and it's now onto another computer, the
01:49links have been broken and you're going to have to reconnect the footage for
01:52every Premiere Elements project, but that is not a pain. Don't worry.
01:56If you're a Monthly subscriber or an Annual subscriber to lynda.com, you
02:00don't have access to the exercise files, but you can follow along from
02:04scratch using your own assets. Ready?
02:07Let's get started.

1. What is Premiere Elements
Understanding the interface
00:00Premiere Elements has a very intuitive user interface that includes three main panels.
00:05Let's take a look at them now.
00:07On the top left here, we have what's called the Monitor panel.
00:10This is where we're going to see all of the footage that we're working with.
00:14The Monitor panel has your same controls as you would see in a DVD player or a
00:18VCR, your play/pause button, rewind, step back.
00:23Right here, this number is where you are in your project.
00:27This little icon is called the Current Time Indicator, and you need to remember
00:33that because we're going to be using that quite often when we shuttle back and
00:37forth in our projects.
00:39Speaking of shuttle, this is a little shuttle, which lets you scan through your
00:44project at a slow or a fevered pace. (music playing)
00:49Next to it, you'll see the Split Clip tool, the Text tool, and the Freeze Frame.
00:54Don't worry about those.
00:55We're going to talk about them in depth in another video.
00:58Now, below is the Timeline or Sceneline, and this is actually where you're
01:04building your projects that you can see in the monitor.
01:09These boxes here in the Sceneline are just clips that you decided to bring in
01:14from footage that you have in your project, and we'll talk about this Task panel later.
01:21These little boxes in the Sceneline are what are called transitions.
01:26So, you're transitioning from this clip to the dance clip on the right.
01:32This is the transition, and you've probably seen that in movies where it goes
01:36from one scene to the next and there is a little dissolve or some kind of a flip or anything.
01:43You can put a lot of different things in here, and there are some great options.
01:47Now the Sceneline has some nice tools here as well: the Pan and Zoom tool, which
01:52allows you to move your clips and we're actually going to do a complete video on
01:57this because it's a new tool,
01:58the Smart Trim mode, Motion Tracking, Properties, Audio tools, and Markers.
02:05We're going to get in to all those in depth in a later video.
02:09Now, we have our video laid out here.
02:11This is a video that I edited called "The Dance" and I just want you to know
02:15that, in the Timeline, which is where I like to work, it is the exact same
02:20clips as the Sceneline.
02:23So, whichever version that you'd like to work in is fine because it's going
02:27to be on either side.
02:29In the Timeline now we don't have the Current Time Indicator up here.
02:33We have it now down here.
02:36I can click and drag and scrub across to see where I want to be, and this shows
02:43me the current time here.
02:45I'm at 12 seconds and 20 frames.
02:47I'm at 23 seconds and 28 frames, so I can be really exact using this.
02:53Now, the Timeline has some very different tools.
02:56It has the Selection tool. That lets you select different clips, and as you see
03:01if I click on them they are highlighting, which means they are active.
03:08I can also click and marquee around them and select them all.
03:13To deselect, just simply go off onto the side.
03:16Next to it is the Time Stretch tool, so if you want to speed things up or slow
03:20them down, you have that ability. And then the rest of the tools are the same as the Sceneline.
03:26One last thing in the Timeline is the zoom in and zoom out tool.
03:31So you see how there might not be enough room to work with here, for some reason.
03:35You can just click and drag it out and it spaces it out.
03:39It does nothing to their actual time.
03:42It just gives you more space to work with. And if you have a really big project,
03:46you can zoom it in and it turns out to be little. Okay.
03:51Also here, let's take a look at this.
03:53That's a little different.
03:55The Sceneline just has your video track here, your narration track, so if you
04:00want to do some narration.
04:02For example, if I was narrating this, I might talk about we're high on the
04:06building looking down. And then underneath that is your soundtrack, so what
04:12music are you putting underneath that?
04:14Now, we're going to talk about those in another video.
04:17In the Timeline you have video tracks and audio tracks.
04:22Elements comes with a default of three audio and three video tracks, which are right here.
04:29You can click on them and delete them if you want, because they are empty,
04:33give you more space.
04:35You want your Video 1 layer is basically going to be your background or bottom layer.
04:40So if you get into stacking video clips on top of each other, as we do in
04:44compositing later on, you need to know that Video 1 will always be the first
04:49one in the back. Then on top of that would be 2 and then 3.
04:53Scrolling down here, we have our narration track and our soundtrack, and they
05:00have down collapsible arrows.
05:03Also, if I go between the three panels, there is a little icon that's got two
05:10lines and two arrows up and down. That allows me to drag and resize the
05:17Elements interface.
05:19So if you need more real estate, it allows you to do that.
05:21Now, let's go up to the Task panel.
05:24The Task panel is where you're going to import your media, and by media I'm
05:30talking about your raw footage from your flip camera, your DSLR, an MP3
05:35player, a DVD that you're trying to get footage from, your hard drive, etcetera.
05:41All of that's going to be imported into the Project panel, so that you can use
05:45it to create clips, which will go into the Sceneline or Timeline, which will
05:51then be viewed into the viewer, the Monitor window here.
05:54So within the Project panel you have icons here that allow you to look at the
05:58List view or the Icon view.
06:01If you're ever in a folder and you want to come out, you can go up one level.
06:05This creates a new folder, so I have a new folder there.
06:08I can right-click and cut it.
06:11This lets you to create a new item.
06:13We'll discuss all the new items later. And this is your Clear or Delete.
06:18So, it also has an Edit panel where you can add effects, transitions, titles,
06:22themes, and even clip art.
06:24Goes into Disc menus here, if you're creating DVD templates. And lastly you can share.
06:30It's got a lot of sharing options.
06:32So, if you went and edited a great video and you wanted to get it up on YouTube
06:36immediately, for example, that's available right there.
06:39So once you learn the basics of the three panels, editing is going to be
06:43as simple as 1, 2, 3.

An overview of the editing workflow
00:00Elements 10 is such a fun and intuitive editor to use.
00:04Before we dive into specific features, let me walk you through a finished
00:08project to give you an overview.
00:10So in this movie I edited an intro for a dance company, and it appears here in
00:16the Sceneline or the Timeline. And I can switch back and forth between the two.
00:21So let's play this really quickly. (video playing)
00:35So how did I create this?
00:37Well, first I had to import footage by going File > Get Media from, and then
00:45choose one of the options here.
00:47Now, Elements comes with an Organizer, which we'll look at in another movie.
00:51It also gives you several different video cameras, flips, your digital still
00:56camera, which could be your DSLRs, even webcams, and lastly, you can choose Files
01:02and Folders, and we're going to go over all this in another movie.
01:06You can also just double-click here in the Project panel.
01:11It'll bring in the Add Media dialog box, and you can bring in footage that way.
01:15Once the footage is imported, I like to create my own folders to keep
01:19everything nice and tidy.
01:20As you see here, I've got footage in one, music in another, and I do this by
01:25clicking on the new folder icon and then renaming it.
01:30I can then double-click on the folder that has the footage and then choose a
01:36piece of footage that I want to create my edit to.
01:39So, I can double-click on the footage, and now I can start creating what
01:42are called in and out points where I want of video to begin and where I
01:47want the video clip to end.
01:49Obviously, I don't want this entire amount of video.
01:52It's over four minutes long.
01:54So, I might just want to start at somewhere around here. And Elements is really simple.
01:59It lets you know down below here where to set in and out points.
02:02So I'll just click Set In.
02:04I can also press the letter I if you see I next to it and it makes a
02:07little marker there.
02:09I'll go ahead in time, maybe just to there and I'll press O or click the Set Out point.
02:17Now, I've got a clip that I can use to drag into my Timeline, and we're going to
02:21go over all that in another movie.
02:24Next, I added transitions. As you can see down here, if I scroll over, we go from
02:29the dance video and we cross- dissolve into the other one.
02:34I'm going to show you how we add transitions to the Timeline to make
02:39seamless edits look great.
02:40Next, I added a music track down below in the Soundtrack area, and you can see
02:46in this area here where my subject starts to talk, I actually made what are
02:51called keyframes to create a lower volume here, so that she could talk and we
02:57can hear her. And Elements actually does that for you, and we'll look at that in another video.
03:02I also added a title here, The Dance, which we use the titling application
03:08here within Elements.
03:10Very simple to use, and I'll show that in our title movie.
03:13You can also add a title effect, and if you see here if I scroll over, we faded into that.
03:21Now, when I'm done I can click up here and choose Share and Elements lets me
03:26send this out to my friends on Facebook pretty much automatically.
03:30If I click on Online, Upload to video sharing web sites, it's looking for its
03:36presets. And here I've an option to send it to Photoshop.com, Facebook, and YouTube,
03:42and we're going to go over all these presents in another movie.
03:45There's also--if you're a podcaster you can go to what's called Podbean, and
03:50we'll talk about that.
03:50It's a podcasting hosting service.
03:53By allowing you to export your finished product to video sharing sites such as
03:58YouTube or podcast hosting Podbean, Facebook and Photoshop.com, Elements really
04:05gives you the power to get your masterpieces out and online quickly.
04:09So that's the overview of the Premiere Elements 10 workflow, and yes, Premiere
04:14Elements really is this easy.
04:16Now, I sped through this,
04:18so in this course I'm going to take you step by step and empower you to use
04:22Adobe Premiere Elements 10 to create your own masterpieces.

2. Starting Your First Elements Project
Creating a new project
00:00So let's launch Premiere Elements 10.
00:02I'll go down here and click on Elements. It'll launch.
00:08If for some reason you don't see this menu, you can always go up here into the
00:11little house, click on it, and it will launch the Welcome menu. So let's go in
00:15and create a new project.
00:18So our first dialog box says New Project, and we're going to call it something
00:21unique, so I'm going to say My Big Movie.
00:27And next I want to save this somewhere, so we're going to browse.
00:30I'm going to go onto my Desktop. Create a new folder. So why am I doing this?
00:36Because I want to have all of my assets, which are my movies, my photos, any
00:42music, all my Premiere Elements files,
00:44I want them all in one location so that later I can take that whole folder and
00:50if I want to move it to another computer or to a hard drive or whatever, I can
00:54do that all with one quick drag.
00:56I am going to name this My Big Movie so I can search and find it, and we're
01:02going to press Create and Choose.
01:06Next, I want to change my setting.
01:07So let's take a look at that dialog box.
01:10So you're going to see two folders, one says NTSC, which is the North American
01:15Standard and PAL, which is in Europe, and there's differences between the two, but
01:21just note if you're in Europe you're going to want to use PAL, if you're in the
01:24United States or North America, you want to use NTSC.
01:28So we'll use the dropdown menu here, and inside here are different formats.
01:32So AVCHD, which is new to Elements 10, is more of a Sony format.
01:38It's a high-definition format.
01:39It's fantastic. We have DSLR footage which could be your Canon 7D or 60D, DV footage, flip
01:47cameras, if you have anything on a hard disk already or from a Flash memory
01:52camcorder and HDV footage.
01:55So however you shot your footage, you need to find a preset that matches
01:58your footage the best.
01:59For us it's going to be this DV Widescreen, and we're going to just click
02:03on that and choose OK.
02:05Premiere Elements 10 offers you several choices when setting up a new project.
02:10Choosing the right settings will help your projects run smoothly.

Importing media
00:00With your new project ready to go, it's time to import your media files.
00:04First let's click on File > Get Media from, and in the dialog box you'll see
00:11Elements Organizer, which we're going to discuss in another video; various
00:16cameras, which we're going to discuss in capturing in the next video.
00:21So for this lesson if you have files, video files or audio files, that are on
00:26your Desktop or your hard drive, you'd click Files and Folders. Maybe you
00:30captured them already or someone handed you the videos or you shot them on your
00:35webcam, et cetera, although we have Webcam here, we're going to click here and
00:40find them. So Files and Folders.
00:42And in the exercise files if you choose assets, double-click on that. And for
00:48this lesson let's just choose dancing, and we're going to import.
00:53And now you may get an Add Media Failure and you're going to freak out because
00:58you think you're doing things wrong.
00:59It's just a certain file extension that Premiere Elements won't accept, but it
01:05really is a nonessential file extension, and it's not going to have any
01:08problems with you.
01:10It's usually from videos that are shot with Canon cameras, some AVCHD.
01:16These are little files that other editing programs may need. Premiere Elements
01:20does not, so I'll just click OK.
01:23So now my assets are in the Project area.
01:26I can double-click on them to see them all.
01:29I can choose the List view if I want to look down and see what they are here.
01:34I can even show how many times it's been used, here in the Video Usage, Audio
01:39Usage, and then this is an area for notes that we can look at later.
01:43If you want to check your footage, all you need to do is double-click on it.
01:47It'll open up the Preview area and you can play.
01:53You can scrub and make sure this is the correct footage that you want.
02:00Premiere Elements 10 allows you to import multiple formats of video and audio assets.
02:05You can mix and match them and get ready to make your edit.
Collapse this transcript
Capturing media
00:00If you just finished shooting and you need to capture that footage to make
00:03a movie, well Elements 10 has recovered too, so let's take a look at how we do that.
00:08Go up to File > Get Media from, and then we can choose what we want here.
00:13So we're going to choose the Flip, the AVCHD, Cameras and Phones because that's
00:18our DSLR area, so we're going to click on that.
00:21And I already have my camera connected via the USB port, so I'm able to see
00:25what's on my camera.
00:27And here's all my footage. And you can see right here it says Canon, so
00:31that's my source.
00:32If your source isn't showing up, you can click the Refresh button.
00:35If you have a lot of sources, if you down arrow, you can select which one you want.
00:40And by default it automatically puts a check mark next to every single piece of
00:45footage, and what that's going to do is if you say get media down here, it's
00:49going to import them all.
00:50So I might not want to do that because I don't want all the footage. I mean I'm
00:54pretty good at shooting, but I don't think these are all that great.
00:56So let me uncheck them.
00:58Now I am going to look around for some stuff, so I kind of like this piece of
01:03footage here, and if I double-click it, it will come into the Preview Monitor
01:07and I can press Play.
01:07(clip playing)
01:09It looks like someone is chasing you.
01:13That's kind of cool.
01:15We can put it into a horror movie that I want to make one day, so I'm going to
01:18bring that one in. And let's take a look at this one.
01:23(clip playing)
01:27Perfect, some more chasing, so I like that. And I'm just going to go around and
01:31grab some I think are going to look good.
01:33So we'll take these or this other highway, this one right here. So I've got six
01:42files selected, and I want to choose a place to put them.
01:46So I am going to go over here into my area here and browse for a place, so let's
01:51go to my Desktop/Exercise Files/assets, make a new folder.
01:56I am going to call that DSLR.
01:59Make sure you find a good place to put your DSLR or other footage so that you
02:03know that we can get back to it anytime.
02:06So I'm saving my footage into a DSLR folder, into my assets folder, because that's
02:10part of my lesson plan here, but you can add it to your hard drives or in
02:15external drives, wherever you feel comfortable, and it needs to be a place where
02:18you can always go back and find it.
02:20So let's click on Choose.
02:22Now I have some other options here.
02:23I can change my file name as a different custom name or number and type in here
02:28what I want, or I can just leave that alone right there.
02:32So I'm just going to leave it at the default now, whatever the file name is.
02:34It's just going to come over as this, and I'll fix it later.
02:37After copying, I can delete originals.
02:39Well I don't like to do that, so I'm going to leave that unchecked.
02:41Do I want add it to the Timeline right away?
02:44Well, I probably want to do some trimming, so I'm not going to do that.
02:48And lastly, I can create an instant movie, and what's that? Well, we'll talk about
02:52that in depth in another video, so that's a lot of fun as well.
02:55So I'm done, and I'm just going to click on Get Media.
03:00And here we are. We've got all our media in here.
03:03It's looking great, and now we can get into editing.
03:07You can also go up here into the Get Media tab here, click on that, and here's
03:12your same menu as you would see up here.
03:15And once again if we click on this one, we can go back to that Video Importer, so
03:19if we ever want to go back to find more footage,
03:22it's right here. And we'll cancel that.
03:26Now I've imported from my DSLR camera, as you saw, but some of the other cameras
03:31you can do are like DV cameras, and the interface looks a little different.
03:35I don't have one handy right now, but let me just show you how it works.
03:38I'll click on DV Camcorder, and this brings up a Capture window. So I can
03:43actually bring this in as a capturing the movie, and I would see it here.
03:48I would press Capture and it would create a file onto my project.
03:52And I would of course go back and see where I wanted it, rename it.
03:55Do I want it to go to the Timeline, split the scene so it's a really long videotape?
03:59I can do that. Let's click out of this.
04:03Same thing with an HD Camcorder.
04:05I can do a similar thing, and we'll pick which of our capture sources right here.
04:10Here's one that the camcorder is like a DVD Camcorder, or a PC DVD drive, so if
04:15you have a DVD in your hard drive, you can go do that.
04:18And of course you can capture from you webcam.
04:20So Premiere Elements can capture video from a multitude of cameras.

Managing media
00:00When you're editing your project you may have several different types of
00:04video footage, several audio files, Photoshop files, pictures. The list goes on and on.
00:10It's highly important to keep all of that organized, and that's something that I
00:14really like to drill home.
00:16So in this project file I have my dancing folder with all the dancing media.
00:20If I double-click, you'll see it all in there.
00:22But I really want to call this videos or video assets or whatever you
00:27feel comfortable with.
00:28So I'm going to click here on the New Folder icon, and I'm just going to call
00:32this videos, because I may also have audio files or Photoshop files, et
00:37cetera, as I discussed.
00:38So now that I've got my video file, I'm just going to click on this and drag it
00:42in. And now it's all in there, so I click on the List view here and do the
00:48down arrow, and once again here are all my files.
00:53And something that I should talk about briefly is that when you see this icon
00:56here and click and hold, you can drag Premiere to your liking,
01:02just to give you a little more room to see what you're doing.
01:08So here's all my footage, neatly tucked away in a hierarchy that I can
01:12find later on.
01:13And anytime I want to add a new folder, for example if I'm here and I have this
01:19selected and I click a new folder,
01:21it's going to make a folder within that dancing folder. So this folder may say
01:26Selects, which are selected footage that I'm going to use out of this folder.
01:33I can also go back to the video folder itself, and click on the new folder icon.
01:38And this folder I might call b roll, which is extra footage that I just shot
01:43randomly that I want to put into my video.
01:46So now I've got my video folder with my dancing footage and my b roll.
01:52So now I can really look and find the exact footage that I want.
01:57Now since this b roll folder is empty, if I go back into my Icon view and
02:02double-click and see my b roll, as you can see, there is no videos there. So all
02:06I need to do is double-click in there, and let's just say, for example, I went
02:10into my Intro folder and picked this nice railing, and now there it is.
02:16So now let's go back into the List view.
02:18We can choose this icon here to go up a level, and there it is.
02:24So you create all these folders in advance and then add footage to them later
02:28on; it's not a problem.
02:30Now in the following movies I'm going to have this hierarchy structured in my
02:35video project file so that you can follow along.
02:38Keeping all of your video elements in manageable order is vital in
02:42Premiere Elements 10.

Missing media and correctly saving projects
00:00So I'm going to start Premiere Elements right now and work on a file that I
00:03edited earlier, but what if I go into my exercise files and you know what, I
00:09decide that I wanted to move a piece of footage such as this one into a
00:13different folder. Call this oh no. Drag it in there.
00:21So that's not part of the same hierarchy as it was before.
00:25Now let's launch Premiere Elements.
00:28So Premiere Elements is launched.
00:29I am going to go up here and choose File > Open Project.
00:32I'm going to my Chapter 02 folder and choose Missing and press Choose and it's
00:39loading my project. Now I've got this nasty thing that says, Where is the
00:44File broll verge_bcam_01.mp4?
00:48Well, I know that's in here, Premiere doesn't, so this is what is known
00:52as missing media.
00:55Anytime you move, or change the name of, or delete a file from a project after the
01:01last save, Elements is going to put up a pop-up like this
01:05that says, Where is the footage? and I can either skip for now,
01:09I can offline it, or I can go in here and reconnect the footage. So
01:13I'll double-click.
01:14It's looking for this footage, and I'm going to press Open. And this Install Full
01:18Content comes up. Just keep clicking No our install it, and now Elements found it
01:23and we're good to go.
01:24I'm ready to edit. Everything is looking good. But I could have also skipped
01:28that process, and let me show you what happens then. Let's restart Elements.
01:33So you might have notice that I didn't save the project before I quit Elements,
01:42so we're probably going to have that problem again.
01:44So I'm going to Open Project, choose Missing.
01:48Oh, it's looking for this footage. Yeah I know it's there, but I'm going to
01:53pretend that it's just not in this folder anywhere.
01:56I don't know where it is. So I'm going to choose Skip.
02:01And now if I go to the end of my movie, I've got this really strange, some type of
02:07Asian writing and Spanish, and where's my media? But that's okay because I am
02:12going to go up here in my footage area and Elements will show you thumbnails.
02:17And this thumbnail is a red and a green arrow going in opposite directions, the
02:22yin in the yang showing me that I've got one clip being used but it's offline.
02:27So what I can do is right- click and choose Replace Footage.
02:33Now I can go into my oh no folder, find that piece of footage, click Open.
02:38It reconnects it, and it's reconnected in the Timeline so everything's just lovely.
02:44But anytime that you move, change, or rename footage, you're going to have to deal
02:49with this, so I highly recommend always keeping your folder with your footage
02:53intact. Don't change names and don't move footage.

3. Adding, Arranging, and Deleting Clips
Sceneline or Timeline?
00:00Adobe Premiere Elements 10 has two ways to work on your movie: the Sceneline
00:04or the Timeline.
00:06Let's take a look at the differences.
00:07So here's our project. Our monitor view is showing what I have in the Sceneline.
00:12The Sceneline is terrific if you're looking for a fast at it you know
00:16exactly that you just want the four clips of your mom's birthday party and
00:20they are in four different clips right here, for example, and you just want
00:24to click and drag them into the area here that says Drag next clip here. And
00:28you can just drag.
00:29Let's find a different clip. And you want to add some simple transitions here.
00:38We're going to do a dissolve this one, Cube Spin, okay, and that's it, and you're
00:45ready to go. You want to render this out, set it up on YouTube to show all
00:49the family back east, because they haven't seen mom in long time, and that's
00:52it, you're ready to go. The Timeline, however, lets you have a lot more control.
00:57It lets you layer videos. So, for example, you wanted to grab some other
01:02footage and put it on top of this video.
01:05So maybe I want to go back up and grab a photo and just layer this here
01:10for some reason.
01:19I can go here and lower the opacity a little bit,
01:22so we can just barely see that.
01:24You can make a lot of other adjustments here.
01:26I just lowered the opacity, but I also have other options here.
01:30So there's Motion, all of these Position, Scale, Rotation. We'll talk about all
01:36those in the motion video. And opacity, like I just showed you.
01:40I can create what are called keyframes, and we'll talk about that. That's more
01:44of an animation thing. And one big thing is--let me just zoom in a little bit here.
01:49I can see right off the bat that this clip right here is pretty long. Maybe I
01:54don't need all this, so I can just look at this clip and say oh my God that
01:58too long, I'm going to grab one end of it and drag it in, and I can change the clip length.
02:03If you go into the Sceneline, you don't have that quick ability. So having the
02:07ability to see the relative length at a glance is a big plus using the Timeline.
02:12In the next few videos, we're going to go over exactly how to import your
02:16footage into the Sceneline or the Timeline, how to change lengths, how to
02:21delete clips, how to rearrange them, and much more.
Collapse this transcript
Adding, arranging, and deleting clips in the Sceneline
00:00You're ready to start making your movie, so we have got to add some clips
00:03into the Sceneline.
00:04To add clips to the Sceneline, it's really simple.
00:07Adobe actually tells you drag next clip here. So let's go into our folder here
00:14in Dancing and let's pick some footage.
00:16I'll just click and drag.
00:18It automatically creates a new one.
00:20I'm going to click and drag another one.
00:21I am going to scroll down, click and drag a third one.
00:25Now as you can see, this is a pretty cool thing. It shows you that this piece of
00:30media has been used in your project, and it's been used one time. So this is
00:36important where if you want to delete excess media, you can delete that, but you
00:40know it's not been used, and you won't delete something that's being used.
00:45So I have got three pieces of media here, and I'm going to go up into the
00:48monitor and drag to the left. And if you notice, if I click and drag and let go,
00:56it automatically scales out and provides me with these two handles, which allow
01:02me to trim my media, and we'll talk about that in another video.
01:06When I scroll to the right it crosses the line, it zooms it out again. So it's
01:11always telling you where you are and how you can trim things.
01:16Now, if I wanted to delete a clip, I just need to go over, maybe I don't want the
01:21middle one, just go over that clip, press the Delete key, and it goes away. And I am
01:25going to press Command+Z to undo that.
01:28Now what if I would like to have the first clip actually be at the end?
01:32Well, that's pretty simple too.
01:34I'm just going to click, hold, and drag and you'll see a little icon that goes
01:40over the arrow button, and now it's highlighting blue right here. So it is
01:45showing me I'm moving it there, and there it is, and we look at the beginning.
01:50This one moved up, this one moved up, and this one took the spot of last one.
01:54So adding, arranging, and deleting clips within the Sceneline is very simple
02:00in Premiere Elements.
Collapse this transcript
Adding, arranging, and deleting clips in the Timeline
00:00Adding, arranging, and deleting clips in the Timeline is very simple as well.
00:04Let's go into our Video folder here and pick some video. And to add it to the
00:09Timeline, all I need to do is hold and drag it and there it goes. There is
00:14one and if you notice, and you're in the List view, you'll see a really cool check mark.
00:19Well, it's probably not that cool, but it says it's been used and how many times.
00:23One time. Well, I add it again here. That's two times. So let's revert, press
00:29Command+Z to get out of that, so back to one time.
00:31Take another piece of footage, drag it here. And you notice when I'm dragging
00:36there is a little gap that I have in between here.
00:39Well, I might not want that, so how do I get rid of it?
00:42I right-click. I choose Delete and Close Gap.
00:45I'll do that here as well.
00:49You can save yourself that hassle by just getting a clip, dragging it, and then
00:53looking for it to snap to the other clip and let go. So now it's snapped.
00:59Now it's easy to add cutaways. So for example, if we were watching this video
01:05here, I might want to talk about the building. I can drag this piece of
01:09footage, put it on video layer 2, and now if I press play, we see the girls getting
01:19ready to dance, and then it goes into a cutaway of the Dance Arts place.
01:26I can also drag some footage and place it within the clip, inserting it there, and
01:32it basically will cut the clip into two pieces and put that new footage in
01:36there. And it does the same thing as the cutaway we did earlier, but it does cut
01:41the clip in two and you may not want that, because later, on what if you say No,
01:46I don't want a cutaway, so you can just click on it, press the Delete key. But
01:50if I press the Delete here, I've got a gap.
01:52So unless you're definite that you want to use that piece of footage, I would
01:56recommend not using the insert like that.
01:59Deleting clips, like I said, you just highlight what you want, press the Delete key.
02:03You can also highlight what you want, right-click, and choose Cut, and it'll ripple
02:09edit for you, which means it's going to close the gap on its own. Let me just
02:12redo that and show you: right-click, Cut, and you see how it moved over? But like I
02:18said, because it made a cut here, it changed the dynamic of this clip. This is now
02:23a shorter clip and it doesn't seamlessly go through.
02:26Now what if I wanted to change the order of clips?
02:29Well, that's easy too. Let's just zoom out. And I might want to this clip now to be
02:34at the end, so I can click-- actually we'll use this clip that I cut.
02:38We're going to click and drag this one to the left, and I'm going to let go. See how
02:43it's snapping right there with the little arrows.
02:47Now that's snapped over and moved this one to the right and left me a gap here, so
02:51I just need to go in, right-click, Delete and Close Gap, and it closed it.
02:55I am going to press Command+Z to undo all this.
02:57I can drag this clip to the very end by clicking and dragging, letting go. It leaves
03:04another gap. I can right- click, Delete and Close Gap.
03:07So it's really simple to arrange, add, and delete clips.
03:12You have a lot of options using the Sceneline or the Timeline.

Modifying clips with the context menu
00:00One of the cool things in Elements 10 is if you right-click on Footage or on
00:05empty tracks, you have a submenu that you can do some really cool things.
00:09Let's take a look.
00:10If I go into this Audio 2 track that's empty and I choose Track Size, it brings up
00:15different sizes of icon.
00:17So if I want to see these thumbnails larger, I can right-click here, choose
00:22Track Size, and choose Large, and here they are.
00:26I prefer working with small, so I am going to choose Small.
00:31I can right-click up here.
00:32I can add tracks so if I click that, it will add a track, up to 5 tracks, if I would
00:37like, before or after.
00:38I am going to leave it default, click OK.
00:40If I scroll up, I have got a fourth track now.
00:45But maybe I know I am not going to use any tracks other than Video1 an Audio1,
00:49so I can right-click once again and Delete Empty Tracks just to keep everything
00:53nice and tidy.
00:54I can also right-click once again and uncheck Snap, so when these checks are
00:59shown--and you will see these another menu items--that means that that is enabled.
01:04So snapping right now is enabled.
01:07And we talked about snapping in the previous chapter. But if I turn that off for
01:10now and let me just grab a piece of footage, and I bring that down here,
01:15now if I drag it to the left, I can keep dragging, because it's not snapping.
01:20So I am going to press Command+Z to get rid of that, Ctrl+Z on a PC.
01:26I will right-click once again and enable Snap, and now I'll try and do that again.
01:31I will drag it down here and as I am going to the left, it snaps into place.
01:36Do it one more time. Snaps.
01:39So snapping may be part of your workflow or you may hate it.
01:42Let's Command+Z, Ctrl+Z to get that out.
01:45Now if I click on the actual clip by just clicking on it and selecting it and
01:49right-click, we have a ton of menu items here. And I am just going to go over
01:53the important ones for now.
01:54You can cut and copy. So if I wanted to just press Copy, for example, and I
01:59went to the end here and press Command+ V or Ctrl+V, it would paste a separate
02:05clip right there of that copy.
02:07We will Command+Z or Ctrl+Z to get out of that.
02:09We will go back.
02:10I will right-click.
02:14I can Delete and Close Gap, and we talked about that before, but here's a
02:18context menu that we can use, so if I go into this second item here and I
02:22right-click, Delete and Close Gap, it's going to delete that and close the gap for us.
02:26So there it goes.
02:28Now there is no gap here between the two pieces of footage.
02:30The other one is gone. Let's Command+Z or Ctrl+Z to get out of that.
02:33We will right-click again. Enable is something that's pretty important, so
02:37Enable is checked.
02:38That means that this piece of footage is enabled, and we can see it.
02:42So let's see what happens when I deselect it.
02:45It turns gray or like a white.
02:47Now if I play it in the Timeline and I go over that piece of footage it turns black.
02:52And let's re-enable that.
02:54And now let's go over to this clip that has both audio and video.
02:58So why would Enable be interesting here?
03:00Well, yes, if I right-click and choose Enable to deselect it, it turns white and
03:06there is no audio or video. But what if I click it again to enable it? And then
03:12the next item down is the Unlink Audio or Video.
03:15So let's select that.
03:17That unlinked the audio from the video.
03:19And I will click over here to the side to deselect them both.
03:22So now maybe I just want to hear the audio on this clip and not have the video.
03:27Maybe I am going to put something on top of it, or
03:29I just want a long piece of video here that just has audio.
03:33So, I am going to select the video, right-click, click on Enable to deselect it,
03:38and it's gone. But if I play the clip.
03:41(music playing)
03:44You hear the music.
03:48So let's go back and enable it again, and there it plays again. And likewise,
03:54if I wanted to do the same with the audio, I can just right-click on the audio
03:58and choose Enable. The audio turns white and I will play the clip and now
04:02there is no audio.
04:07And we will enable that one more time.
04:08Now I can go back and select both clips, right-click, and link them back up again.
04:15So I will press Link Audio and Video, and now they are one clip one more time.
04:20Now another item is the Fade. So if I want to do a quick fade and not have to go
04:25searching through my transitions, go to the beginning of the movie.
04:28I want to fade in from black.
04:30I am going to right-click here.
04:31I am going to select it, right- click, go to Fade > Fade in Video.
04:36It creates a fade right there.
04:38If I start to press Play, it fades in from black.
04:42As you can see, Elements 10 has some great options in the context click menu.
04:49Some of them we may cover in another, video but the ones I showed you now will
04:53give you much more control in your editing process.

Rendering: What is the red bar?
00:00While you are editing in Premiere Elements 10, you may come across times where
00:04you'll see this gray line right here turn red, and what that's telling you is
00:10you have added something to your clip that needs to be rendered.
00:13It needs to be processed so that the clip understands what you did.
00:17So I am going to click into the Edit menu here and choose an effect. And we are
00:23going to talk about effects later, so don't worry about that now.
00:25I am just going to show you why something might need to be rendered.
00:28If I go here and I look into my Color Corrections, for example, and I choose
00:33this Auto Vibrance and I just either drag it on there or onto the clip,
00:37I am just going to drag it on,
00:38you can see the colors have moved up.
00:40And really nice now, I like that.
00:41But it's created this red bar, and the red bar is telling me that this clip and
00:47that effect are meshing together, but it has not been processed by the computer yet.
00:52So if you have a slow computer with not much memory or ram, it's going to play
00:57back a little bit slow.
00:59So if I press the spacebar here, it's playing okay because we are on a pretty
01:03solid computer here.
01:05But as you can see, it's a little bit of colorization weirdness.
01:10That's because it really needs to process this together.
01:13So how do we do that?
01:14Very simple. You just go to your keyboard, press the Enter key,
01:17and it's going to bring up this Rendering box. It's telling me the percentage, how many
01:22frames, how much time I have left, boom, and it's done.
01:25And now it's a green line. We like green. It's green.
01:29And now it's going to play back in real time.
01:36Now one last thing: because we rendered, Elements creates kind of a cached
01:41file of this render.
01:42Now it's not a problem, but it's going to help fill up space on your hard drive
01:45if you don't watch else, so let's take a look at where that file is.
01:51And I am going to my Desktop, the exercise files, Chapter03. Elements creates a
01:58folder called Adobe Premiere Elements Preview Files, and I will double-click on
02:02that, and we will go to the last one here that says render. But before I do that,
02:07you can see these other files from previous chapters are in there as well.
02:10Let's double-click here, and here's our Rendered file.
02:14We will right-click and take a look at that.
02:17So that added 74 MB to our hard drive.
02:19So just think if you have hundreds of clips in your video timeline and you
02:24have to render them all.
02:25You are going to have a lot of your hard drive taken up by these.
02:28So, my recommendation is at the end of your video when you have rendered out and
02:32you sent it to DVD or put it on the web and you are done with this project, go
02:36in there and clean up these files.
02:38It's not going to affect your main project because it will still be there in the
02:41Timeline, but it's going to clean up your hard drive a little bit.
02:44And that's how we render.
02:45Now there's other things that may cause you to render, such as transitions or
02:49audio changes, other effects, and we are going to get into all of that later as
02:53the course continues.

4. Basic Editing
Adjusting clip length in the Preview window
00:00In the previous chapter, we have talked about importing clips to the Timeline,
00:04but what if you don't want that entire clip? I mean rarely are you going to use
00:08an entire clip that you shot.
00:09You are going to need to fine-tune it.
00:11That's where the Preview window comes in.
00:13So with my footage in here selected, I can double-click. It opens up
00:17this Preview monitor.
00:19I can also right-click on it and say Open in Clip Monitor.
00:24So within this monitor, I can create in and out points.
00:28Where do I want the video to begin and where do I want it to stop?
00:32So let's just take a look.
00:33I am moving to Current Time Indicator.
00:35I am going to find some dancing here, maybe right there before they start to
00:40roll, and I am going to press this SetIn point.
00:44And then we are going to go ahead a little bit.
00:47When they stop to roll and little spin, I am going to press the SetOut point.
00:52Now, I have created a clip that I may want to use for a certain part of my movie.
00:56Now you can see this blue area and the handles I have here.
01:01This is my area that I have just cut.
01:03So let's Command+Z and Ctrl+Z out of this, and it's back to where it was.
01:07So if I want this to be the end, I can once again click SetOut point, press the
01:12letter O if I want, or click and drag. And let go.
01:17And then we'll back up a little bit, and that's where I want it to start.
01:23I can press the SetIn point or hold my mouse here and click and drag.
01:28And now this little gray area is the part of the clip that I am going to
01:32use, and I am just going to click on it, drag it down into my Timeline, and
01:36let go, and there it is.
01:38Now the clip is also in the Sceneline as well.
01:41I'll close out the Preview window and you see if I play it, that's the clip of
01:45them rolling and spinning and stopping.
01:50Go back into the Timeline, press the spacebar, there they are.
01:58So by using the Preview window, you can really fine-tune your clips as you
02:02begin editing.

Adjusting clip length in the Sceneline
00:00So we have our clips in the Sceneline, but if we want to make them shorter or longer?
00:04Well, let's take a look how.
00:06So with my three clips in the Sceneline and if I just scrub through them here,
00:09you will see I go here one clip to this next clip, to the next clip. But maybe
00:15as I was editing, I just found some clips I thought were good and didn't really
00:18look at the length, and now they are kind of lagging along and not really telling
00:22my story as I would like it to do.
00:24So what can I do?
00:25Well, as you can see, within my project window here, I have these two handles
00:30that represent the in and the out of the clip.
00:33Now if I started the clip from the very beginning, I'm pretty much stuck
00:38with that intro area.
00:39But if I made it shorter than it was when I brought it in the project, I have
00:44room here to extend it or to make it smaller.
00:47All of this is done in what's called nondestructive editing, meaning
00:51you're not actually shortening or making that clip longer;
00:55it stays the same.
00:56The reference that you are making to that clip, which is this little clip here,
01:01the reference you are making to this video file is becoming shorter or longer.
01:05The video file always stays the same.
01:07So as I am watching this, I like where it starts, and if I go when this guy in
01:12green steps up and puts his head down in a second right there, I think that's
01:16where I want to stop. So I am just going to click, hold, and drag to the left as I see this red. The red
01:23means everything that's going to go away. So I am going to let go.
01:26So now if I go back a little bit and play, I see he puts his head down and then
01:32we transition into the next video.
01:34As I said before, it's nondestructive.
01:36I could go back here and say you know what, I want that all back.
01:40So I can click, hold, and drag, and bring it back.
01:45But I like when he does this.
01:47So he just puts with his head down, and we are going to transition into the next video.
01:52And now we go here.
01:53Now on this one, I particularly don't like how she is kind of frowning there.
01:58I think she smiles a little bit because it's a happy day.
02:02So maybe about right there she has got a little smile on her face, so I am going
02:06to click the in point, drag it to the right and let go, and now if I look,
02:12she's smiling. She's keeps looking.
02:15We will stop about right there.
02:16She is looking over at the instructor.
02:18So I am going to click on this one, drag it in, let go, and we go from here to
02:25her dancing right there. And I would probably apply a nice little transition
02:29right here, and we will go into transitions at another time, but we will make a
02:33nice smooth transition over to the next video.
02:35So changing the duration to clips within the Sceneline is really easy and very
02:40much the essence of video editing.

Adjusting clip length in the Timeline
00:00We just saw how to trim your clips, adjust the length, make them longer within
00:05the Sceneline, but now let's take a look at how to do that in the Timeline.
00:08So I have got my three clips once again down here.
00:10I've got my CTI, or my Current Time Indicator, right here, and if I move this and
00:16you look right here, you can see that you've got the time moving, so that's why
00:20this is called the Current Time Indicator.
00:22Problem I have is that everything is really small, and I don't have room to work here.
00:26So I am going to go up to the Zoom window here, and it says Zoom Out and Zoom In.
00:30If I click and hold, drag it to the right, I have got some room now.
00:35Same footage, wonderful.
00:38So let's talk a little bit about once again that this is a Premiere
00:42Elements project file.
00:44Once again, I am going to try and drill this in your head.
00:47Whatever you do here in the Timeline or the Sceneline has no effect over your
00:53master footage in here.
00:55None at all. If you make this green, if you spin it upside down or sideways,
00:59if you invert it, whatever you do, will never affect the master file.
01:04So you can be as creative as you like within your clip.
01:08So with that knowledge and power, let's move on and have some fun.
01:12So once again, I am moving, and I want to edit right there.
01:17So now in the Timeline we have our cursor.
01:22And if I hover over a piece of footage-- let's say I will select this footage,
01:26that's the one I am going to edit--
01:27when I hold my cursor over the two pieces of footage here--see they are
01:31connecting right here--the arrows to the left are going to affect this piece of footage.
01:36The arrow to the right is going to affect this piece of footage.
01:39So to the left is going to affect this footage, to right, this footage, and so on.
01:46So now, I want to stop right there.
01:49I am just going to go to my little area here, click and hold and drag, and
01:53there it goes.
01:54Let's do that one more time.
01:56I am going to hit Undo, and now we are going to go back here. And I want to take a
02:00look into this Preview monitor here, and now when I click and drag, I can see on
02:05the left what I am cutting or trimming. And when I stop, I have got it there.
02:11Now the other good thing is that Elements moves over and shifts the other pieces
02:17of footage that I have in the Timeline.
02:18Now what if it didn't do that? We would have a big gap, and let's take a look at that.
02:22I am going to click and drag the other clips, let go, and now I have got this big
02:28gap, which is not very interesting.
02:31So if that ever happens to you, you can right-click in the area, choose Delete
02:36and Close Gap, and it will do it for you.
02:39Okay, so the next clip, I see her frowning once again.
02:43I want her to smile because she knows she is going to dance soon, and there she
02:46is smiling, so I am going to go here, click and drag, and Elements shifted over
02:53these two clips to button up against this clip.
02:56And if I Play, she is smiling and then the dance coach calls her, and we will
03:03drag this over. It's her turn to dance.
03:07So there she is right there, so now I am going to trim this one, and now she is dancing.
03:13So we see these people dancing. The girl is waiting for her turn.
03:17The coach calls her, she goes in and dances, and I would add some transitions
03:22here and have some fun.
03:24And then this might be a little long, so then I might trim this, click and drag.
03:29Okay so we finished trimming.
03:30Now let's go up here and hit the play button, but I want to go back to the beginning.
03:36So I am just going to drag it back, press the play button, and there is
03:42everybody dancing.
03:44I would transition there to the girl, and then there she is dancing, and it's
03:50great. Then I would probably fade it out.
03:52So there we go, so you can see how easy it is to trim your projects.
03:56But what if I wanted to go back here and see her actually frowning, give her
04:01that little bit of a frown because she was unhappy that she hadn't being picked yet?
04:04So I am just going to drag the footage to the left.
04:07Let's see, right there, she is little pouty let go and now if I play it, there
04:14she is, maybe a little bit more even, so I will click and drag it a little more.
04:18We will go back and I will play it again.
04:21We go there, the boy nods.
04:24There is the girl, a little sad, oh she is smiling, she might get picked, and
04:27she gets picked.
04:29So as you saw, I could drag in and out, trimming things, making them longer,
04:34making them shorter, all nondestructively, as I said, within Premiere Elements.

Playing with time: Freeze, change speed, and duration
00:00Time. Time is money, but it is also changeable and you can freeze it too,
00:05especially in Premiere Elements.
00:06Let's take a look at how to do that.
00:08Once again, I have my three clips of my dancers, my girl pouting, and she
00:13finally dances, and I also added a clip of an interview from the dance company.
00:18We will take a look at that in a second.
00:20Okay, first things first.
00:21I think she really would be happy to see this in slow motion.
00:25So I have a tool here called the Time Stretch tool, and if I go up into my area
00:29here where my tools are, I am currently in the cursor, or the Selection tool.
00:34I can go next to it into the Time Stretch tool, or click the letter X as a shortcut.
00:39So I am going to select the Time Stretch tool.
00:41Now what if I want to make it faster?
00:43So the Time Stretch tool becomes this really strange cursor. And if I hold it
00:48over, you can see it's just like the other tool, but I have got the two
00:51arrows up and down now, and that's indicating to me that I can speed things up
00:56or slow them down.
00:57So I am going to select the end here, click and drag, maybe to there, and while I
01:04am at it, I am going to expand a little more.
01:06So I can see now that--and let's go just a little more zooming in--
01:10I have got 139.06%. And once again I have the red bar, which means I would need to
01:17pre-render this, but we are not going to do that right now.
01:19We are going to press play and there they are, moving a lot faster.
01:23And you also notice that as I did that, I got a gap here, so once again you
01:27would right-click and choose to delete and close.
01:30We are not going to do that just yet. We are going to Command+Z to undo, and we are
01:34at 100%. And I am going to zoom in a little bit.
01:36What if I want to make it slower?
01:40I can click and drag. I can't.
01:42I am stuck. Why? Because there is a clip next to it.
01:45I go to this clip, try and drag to the right.
01:48It won't let me.
01:48I can only make it faster or click it in or make it smaller.
01:52So I can't slow it down just yet.
01:55However, let me just drag my Selection tool, move this interview clip over, go
02:01back to my Time Stretch tool,
02:03now if I drag it to the right, I can slow it down.
02:07And now I have slowed it down to 66.91%. And I can click and play and there she
02:13is moving a lot slower. Cool. And we will stop it there. And now I might like that
02:19and I might want to right- click and delete and close the gap.
02:23So let me undo this, because there is another way to do this, without all of
02:26that dragging around.
02:28So I do want to make this slower, so as my Time Stretch tool is selected, I am
02:34going to go over the piece of footage I want to slow down, I am going to
02:37right-click, and this gives me some options.
02:40Go down till I see Time Stretch and click that.
02:43Now in the Time Stretch dialog box, I can change the speed to anything I want
02:47by clicking and dragging left and right.
02:50I can also click in it and choose in exact amount. So let's say I am going to go 50%.
02:55I want it to be really slow.
02:56It's showing me that my duration is now 17 seconds.
03:00I can reverse it, so go backwards, and we will actually do that. And
03:04Maintain Audio Pitch,
03:05we are going to talk about that with the interview footage.
03:08So let's just click this. So I click OK.
03:10Now it pushed the other clip away from it, allowed me to stretch it, and I am
03:15playing it 50%, and it's backwards.
03:17So let's go back here and when I press play, there it is, all slow motion in 50%,
03:26and it's backwards from what it was.
03:28Maybe I think that's the way it should be. Time should go backwards.
03:34So it really is that simple, and let's go back.
03:36Command+Z to undo this. And if you see, we are playing in real time, and we are
03:42going in the right direction.
03:43Now let's go into this interview, and let me just play this for a couple of
03:46seconds, by pressing the spacebar or clicking the play button.
03:50(Female speaker: Dance classes. That's the foundation of our programming.)
03:54So she is talking about dance classes and programming, which is pretty
03:57relevant to this.
03:58Now if I wanted to, I can go to the end here, since there is nothing there, and I can
04:02slow this down and press play.
04:05(Female speaker: That's the foundation of our programming. Um.)
04:11Okay, but what if I want to make it faster. So let's say I make it really fast
04:17and I will press play now.
04:18(sped-up inaudible speech)
04:22So that sounded really weird, and that's where we talk about what pitch is, a
04:26high pitch or a low pitch. (sped-up inaudible speech)
04:29This chipmunk sound is the high pitch, and we don't want that, and there is ways
04:33to fix that. So let's undo this by pressing Command+Z and now we have got our
04:39normal speed, and I will just test it.
04:40I am hitting the spacebar, okay we are good.
04:44So instead of dragging, I am going to right-click once again, go into Time
04:49Stretch, and I am going to make this 150%, but I am going to maintain my audio pitch.
04:58So make sure that's selected, click OK.
05:00Let's go back a little bit. Let's press the Spacebar.
05:03(sped-up inaudible speech)
05:08Okay, so you can see it's completely different now.
05:10It's not sounding as chipmonky.
05:12It's little weird, but it sound useable.
05:15So that's how you would do that.
05:16And I am going to press Command+Z to undo.
05:19Now one last feature that's really cool.
05:21What if right here she is doing her move
05:23I wanted to freeze that time?
05:25I am going to go up here into this lovely little camera here
05:28that's called the Freeze Frame, and I am going to select it, and this is showing
05:32me what I am freezing, how many seconds I want it to be.
05:34So I am just going to start with the default to five seconds.
05:37If you have Adobe Photoshop Elements installed as well, you can send it to
05:42Photoshop Elements after you have done this. Maybe you want to do some kind of
05:46the cartoon look in it or something, whatever.
05:49You can do all that, be creative if you'd like.
05:51Now I can export a freeze frame clip or I can just insert it right there where I want it.
05:55So I am going to insert it into my movie.
05:57It moves everything over and now if I press play, we are playing, we are frozen,
06:03and we are playing again.
06:08That's a little long, so I am going to get my Selection tool.
06:13I am going to drag it over a couple of seconds, let go.
06:17It ripple-edits.
06:18I am going to press Play once again.
06:21We froze and we are doing it again.
06:25So as you can see, it's really easy to become a master of time in
06:29Premiere Elements.
Collapse this transcript
Splitting and moving clips
00:00In the last movie, we saw how to slow and freeze time, but what if we wanted to
00:05both of them to the same clip to make one part of the clip really fast, one part
00:10of it slow, or have a freeze frame of a different clip and bring that in? How do
00:14we move all that around?
00:15Let's take a look at that.
00:17So in my dance footage once again--and actually let me expand this a little bit.
00:22My dance footage. I might want to go to right here and then make it really slow,
00:28so let me go from here to there. And Premiere Elements has a great tool called
00:34the Split Clip tool, or Command+K as a shortcut.
00:38It's actually just a pair of scissors, so think of it as that.
00:42Anywhere that I have my Current Time Indicator, the red line with the blue
00:46icon, and I click this, it's going to make a cut in the clip. So I can click once here.
00:52Now I have split this into two clips.
00:55Now they are both, like I said, non-destructive. Nothing has happened to the
00:58footage, so don't worry. Just be creative.
01:01So now we are playing at normal speed.
01:04I might want to slow it down right here, so I am going to click another split clip.
01:08I am going to go back to this footage, right-click, go into my Time Stretch tool,
01:13and let's make this 50%.
01:17So it made it slower, it moved the other footage over, and it's looking good.
01:21So let's press the Play button.
01:24It goes at normal speed. Then we are slowing down, and then we pick it up again.
01:32So what if now I wanted to have a part of my interview in here?
01:37So let me go over here to the interview
01:39and me just grab a little bit, press my Split Clip tool, and now I can click,
01:45drag it over here, let go, and now I've got normal speed, slow motion, the girl
01:57talking, and back to where she was dancing before, without breaking a rhythm.
02:03So that's the power of using the Split Clip tool and the ability to move clips
02:07around in Premiere Elements.

Applying transitions: Getting from scene to scene
00:00Going from A to B. Transitions are a great way to get there, so let's learn how to do that.
00:05But first, what is a transition?
00:07Well, a transition could be a fade-in at the beginning of a movie or going from
00:11one scene to the next with a cross- dissolve, taking a part of one scene and the
00:16other scene and blending them together.
00:18It could also be stars taking you from one scene to the other with a starry night.
00:22So transitions are a lot of fun and really can help you tell your story.
00:26So in our story here we have the girl standing in the corner.
00:31We have her right there, her coach says come in, and now she's dancing.
00:36So while this is all nice, I think transitions would make it a lot better. And
00:40lastly, what about when the interview comes in?
00:44It really doesn't pertain too much to the first three as part of the story, as
00:48part of the storyline, but not that little story right here.
00:52So I might want to fade to black and then fade in, because it's another instance
00:55that's going on here.
00:57So let's do this all together.
00:58We are going to start at the beginning when they're dancing. So to add a
01:01transition I go to Edit > Transitions, and in this dropdown menu I have got
01:07Video and Audio Transitions and Plus Member Only, and that's for people that are
01:11Plus Members with Adobe.
01:13I can also click in here and type Search and look for a transition by name, if I
01:18know the exact name of it.
01:19So I have got Video Transition selected and if I look under them, I have got
01:24Cube Spins and Flip Overs, all kinds of dissolves, iris transitions where it'll
01:30go from one to the other, like in a circle, like in an iris of a lens, Bouncing
01:35Cubes, Box Explode. I mean it ships with a lot of transitions that can be a lot of fun.
01:41Here's one called Metallic Ice. So play with them, be as creative as you like.
01:46Here is a Wave and a Zoom and a Roll and a Shake, lots of fun. But I don't think
01:50any of them pertain to our story.
01:52So I am just going to go kind of old school and just go into my Dip to Black.
01:56So I am going to select that, drag it down into my footage, the very beginning, and let go.
02:02Now if I press play here, it fades from black to them dancing.
02:06So I like that, and then I want this to cross-dissolve, going from A to B.
02:14So it's taking a little bit of this frame and a little bit of the next frame and
02:18blending it together, so I am going to take the cross-dissolve and drag it here
02:24in the middle and let go, and we will press play.
02:27And now we dissolve nicely to the girl and she looks at her coach, and we're
02:32going to cross-dissolve again, and press play, and there she is, dancing.
02:41So it really enhances the story a lot.
02:43Now before I get into the interview, I might want to just dip to black and kind
02:48of put a bookend to this whole thing.
02:50So I am going to select that and put it right there in between the two pieces of
02:53footage and if I press play, it goes to that.
02:58So let's just watch this whole thing from the beginning.
03:00It fades in, cross-dissolves, cross- dissolves again, and gets ready to fade out.
03:17So that's a nice little story.
03:18I think that's a great job if I do say so myself.
03:21But what if I wanted to make the intro a little more dramatic, like maybe it
03:25takes a long time to get going.
03:27So I can just click on the transition, which is this little arrow.
03:31It's transitioning from one to the other.
03:32That's what the arrow means.
03:33I am going to double-click on that, and by doing that it brings up the effect in
03:38the Edit tab here. And your timeline might be showing or might not be showing,
03:44but we are going to have it showing. And what this is showing me here is that
03:49this is the transition right here. It's got a duration of one second.
03:52If I expand this a little bit, you can see it's going from A to B. But what if
03:57I want to make it a little longer?
03:58I can just go here, just like we moved footage in the Timeline, click and drag,
04:04go out a few more seconds, and now let go.
04:07Let's come back to the Timeline here, press play, and it's a little longer.
04:13So as you see down here as well, if I press Command+Z to undo, it goes back to
04:19the area here that it started with.
04:20I am going to redo that because I like slow intro.
04:29And now if I want to go a little longer on the girl here, I can do that as well.
04:33So I might double-click there and on cross-dissolves, you have two sides.
04:37So maybe I want to come in a little bit there and drag it a little bit more there.
04:42Once again, the icon shows you that, the in and the out,
04:46but what if I want to move the whole transition?
04:48I can see these black marks right here, and I can click and hold and drag
04:52the whole transition.
04:54So it's very, very customizable. And we will go back and press play, and there we go.
05:03So as you can see, transitions can enhance your scenes and make your movie
05:08look very professional.

5. Applying and Editing Video Effects
Applying effects to clips
00:00Have you ever thought "Wow, a little blur would just be nice here," or "Geez I love
00:05that cartoon look I saw in the movie;
00:06I really want my film to have that cartoon look"?
00:08Well, you know what?
00:09You are in luck, because Elements 10 has some great video effects that you can
00:13easily add to your clips. Let's take a look.
00:16So I have got my dance video here that I may want to enhance here with some fun
00:20video effects, such as this clip here.
00:23Maybe I want to give this that cartoon kind of look, so what I do is go into
00:28my Edit panel here, with this clip selected, and you will see it's there, and
00:34now I am going to look at my different effects.
00:36So I have Video Effects chosen.
00:39I am going to click on the down arrow here for Show All, but it's going to give
00:42me all the different ones I have, and I am going to scroll down here and choose
00:46NewBlue Cartooner Plus.
00:50So I am going to click on that, and here it is. To add an effect, you just click
00:55and you drag it, and you let go. Pretty simple stuff.
00:58And now if I go back a few frames and press play,
01:01they are dancing in this weird cartoon world.
01:06And what if I wanted to edit this a little bit? So I just need to select
01:09that footage once again, and down here is the Edit Effects applied on the
01:15Selected Clip dialog box.
01:17So I click on that and this gives me the opportunity to change things up.
01:22So of I down arrow here, I've got presets.
01:25I can do Architecture, Paint Blobs--
01:29that's kind of a cool thing-- Light Cartoon, et cetera.
01:33I kind of like that animation that we first had, so let me go back to that.
01:37And then the Lines.
01:38Now, I can change the Density by clicking and dragging to the right, letting go,
01:42and you can see they get little dense.
01:44I can change my width a little bit, make them thicker. Mixing it up between the
01:52footage and the effect.
01:54So right now it's at 75%. And then here is the Paint, so I can change it
01:59to different layers.
02:00There are just so many options that you can do.
02:02It would take us hours and hours to go through them all, so I ask you
02:05please them on your own.
02:06They are lot of fun. You will see.
02:08Now I can also toggle back and forth of whether or not I liked the effect or
02:12not, so I can click here. Yeah, I think that that looks pretty good.
02:16Now if I go to the next slide and it's this Dance Studio, what if I wanted this
02:21to be maybe a little blurry here?
02:24So I am going to go into my Blurs And Sharpens, and Gaussian Blur is very
02:29popular, so we are going to click on that. Drag it here.
02:31And as you can see, it added a cool little blur, and I am going to click on it to
02:36select it and I am going to edit the effect. And I can keyframe these, which is
02:40a new term that we are going to talk about in another movie, and actually do a
02:44little transition of blurry, non-blurry, back and forth.
02:48But right now, we are just going to keep it blurry.
02:51And then here are the people dancing.
02:53She looks a little blurry, so you know what I want to do is sharpen her up. So I
02:57am going to go back into my Effects.
02:58I am going to select the clip, and here next to the Gaussian Blur is the Sharpen.
03:03I am going to click and select it on there, and now I am going to click Edit
03:07Effect > Sharpen, and I am going to bring that up maybe 32. And if I deselect it,
03:13you can see it's blurry, and if I put it back on, we see it fine.
03:17So as you can see, adding effects can be great enhancers to your videos, by
03:22making them artistic, enhancing the footage itself by making it more in focus
03:26or out of focus.

The new Pan and Zoom tool
00:00If you have ever seen the awesome documentaries of Ken Burns with the subtle
00:04movement of the stills, well now you can re-create those with the new Pan &
00:09Zoom tool in Elements 10.
00:11So here I've got a still that I have applied the Pan & Zoom tool to, and
00:15let's press play.
00:15Instead of just sitting there, it moves nice and slow.
00:20I can add some narration underneath and make it a lot more interesting than just
00:25looking at a photo and hearing my voice.
00:27So how do we do that?
00:28Well, let's go into our Photos and let's pick a photo.
00:34We want to use the Jackie_jump_black_dress.
00:37I am going to bring it down. And I might want it to play for a little longer than
00:41a few seconds, so I will just click, hold, and drag it, as we learned in other
00:44lessons. And here it is.
00:47So now, I can click the Pan & Zoom tool right here and it opens it up, and it's
00:52basically telling me on Frame1, which is here, I am going to have this and on
00:57Frame2, I am going to have this.
01:01So on Frame1, what if I want to do the opposite?
01:03Well, I can click and drag this a little bit. And it has got a plus and minus
01:08button here, so I can click the minus button.
01:10It shrinks it, once again, and once again.
01:13I can also just go to the edges here and drag it.
01:17I might want to have it over her face right here. And then the second frame, I
01:21might want that to be big.
01:23Now I can drag it up, press the plus key once more, and we can click Done, and
01:28now I have got it on her face. Nice move, I can discuss how an amazing
01:34ballerina she is, et cetera.
01:35So the Pan & Zoom tool really can make your photos come alive in Elements 10.

Adjusting the position, scale, and rotation of clips, and creating picture-in-picture effects
00:00Adobe Elements 10 enables you to control many aspects of your clip. So I've got
00:05three clips here in my Timeline.
00:06I have got a dance clip here--and I will just move these over a little bit so
00:10we can see them better.
00:11Here is another dance clip. And then the bottom layer, or my background, is this
00:16lovely shot of the handles on the gym room floor.
00:18So I am going to press Command+Z to move them back, Ctrl+Z on the PC, and I am
00:23going to select my top clip. And now I am going to go to Edit > Edit Effects, and
00:28here is what's called the Motion tab and the Opacity.
00:31We are just going to talk about Motion for now.
00:33Within the Motion tab is the Position, the Scale, Scale Width, the Rotation,
00:43and the Anchor Point.
00:44Let's not worry about the AntiFlicker filter now.
00:47So I am going to start off with the anchor point.
00:48Now what is an anchor point?
00:50An anchor point is the center of the world.
00:53Basically it's like the sun.
00:54It's where everything is going to go around or be centrally located around, and
00:58here is my anchor point on this clip. It's a circle with crosshairs.
01:03So if I choose Scale and I scale it down--and we will make it bigger again or
01:08actually I will go here and type in 100%. And why is that important?
01:12Well, if I go down into Rotation and choose Rotate Left, everything is rotating
01:18around the anchor point.
01:19But what if I wanted the anchor point to be in the corner here, so that it
01:23rotated around this way?
01:24So let's take a look.
01:26So I am just going to scrub this over, and we will go 250.
01:34I could have also just typed in 250 right there.
01:37So now looks like my footage has moved, but the anchor point is the one that's
01:41moved, so now if I just click and hold my footage and drag it back, put it into
01:45the middle, the footage is where it should be, but the anchor point has moved
01:49to the left. And if I go into my Rotate, it's rotating to the left now around my anchor point.
01:56That's the new center of the universe;
01:58it's not in the middle here.
02:00Now that might be important because later on when you learn how to use
02:04keyframes and you want to make something spin or rotate or resize and you want
02:10it to go from a specific area of your video, you know how to use the anchor
02:13point to move it there.
02:14I am going to press Command+Z to get us back to square one.
02:19Now let's look at Scale for a moment.
02:22I showed you how I scaled in earlier, but why don't we use Scale and Position now.
02:27So I am going to scale this down to about 45%. And you know what?
02:32I am going to drag this over here to the right, and then I am going to select
02:36the next clip underneath it, and I am going to scale that down to 45%.
02:43I am going to click and drag that one.
02:45So, as you can see, as I have done this, created this cool picture in picture,
02:50keep an eye on this position number here, so if I click on this in the viewer
02:54and drag it around, position number moves with it.
02:57So you can either do that in the viewer here, which is a little more intuitive
03:02than using numbers, or use the numbers.
03:04So now if I deselect, I've got this cool little picture-in-picture thing playing,
03:09and let's just press the spacebar and see how it plays.
03:11I can also turn it upside down if I wanted to, so maybe the background is upside
03:19down for some reason. Let's go back.
03:22So as you can see, once you master the Motion tab within the Effects window
03:28inside the Edit > Effects Motion, you will be able to make some great
03:31picture-in-pictures and many other things.

Using the Tracker
00:00So you have a nice clip with your subject moving across the screen and you
00:03would really love to attach something to it, maybe some text or an arrow
00:07pointing which way they're going, or even a piece of video or a clipart--
00:11whatever you'd like.
00:12Well, Elements is great and lets you do this.
00:15So I have this piece of footage of this boat cruising across the water here,
00:19and I need to let it know to watch out for whales, so I might attach some text to it.
00:23But first I want to track, so I'm going to go here and select the clip and go
00:28to this little icon and choose Motion Tracking mode.
00:32Now it's going to pop up this window to ask you if you want to run the Auto
00:35Analyzer to track moving objects.
00:38Well, Adobe Elements lets you do a lot of things automatically, and that's
00:42pretty cool, but when you're tracking something, what this will do is it will
00:47track the boat right here;
00:49it'll probably track the buoy, if it's moving at all;
00:51definitely the birds will have so many tracking points it will be ridiculous.
00:56So, on this particular one we are going to say no.
01:00So this brings up the Tracking mode window. And now I need to add an object, so
01:05I am going to click here to add a new object, and we get this little box that has
01:09got four circles. And yes, I know what you are thinking.
01:12They look like anchor points.
01:13Well, they are not anchor points.
01:15They are track points.
01:17So we are going to select one, move it over. And when you track something, you
01:22really want to find something that's noticeable, like the red here or the house
01:28over here, something that's stable, that's in throughout the shot, and the
01:31tracker can really pick up on.
01:33So I am going to start here, I am going to go for the red, and we will just move
01:37this over, and we are going to go start from there and track the red.
01:42Now, one thing you need to keep in mind when you are tracking. You need to be at
01:450, so make sure you are at the beginning of your movie.
01:49And now, I am just going to click on Track Object and we are done.
01:52So let's take a look at how that looks.
01:57So, not bad. It's following it along, stretching out a little bit.
02:04It's not too bad of a track.
02:05Okay, so let's stop that, and let's go back. And you know what?
02:11I really want it to have a better track and I am going to try and track the
02:14whole sail, so I am going to go back into Tracking mode, click No again, and
02:20anytime you have a track that you want to get rid of--and this actually will
02:23show you why we didn't run Auto Analyzer because we would have had a ton of
02:28these little yellow boxes.
02:29So I select the box, and it turns blue, I right-click, and I choose Delete
02:35Selected Object. Now it's gone and we have no more tracks, so we are going
02:38to start from scratch.
02:39So I am going to add an object, and this time I'm going to the whole sail.
02:45I will go here. Make it as tight as you can.
02:55So we will do that. Now I am going to track this.
02:58And the tracker actually moves pretty quickly. And now we are done, and let's
03:02see what it looks like.
03:06That's pretty good.
03:07It's really capturing the whole essence of the sail there.
03:10So it's moving along with it really well, not too many fluctuations.
03:14I am feeling comfortable with attaching something to that.
03:17So let's attach some text.
03:19So I am going to go back here. I am going to click on the T for the Default Text tool.
03:23Now don't worry about this.
03:24We are going to cover text in a later lesson. Just don't even pay attention to
03:28me making this text right now.
03:30So I am just going to write "Watch for whales!"
03:36And I am going to make this a little bit smaller, and now I am going to go back
03:44into the Timeline and I am going to select this Watch for whales!
03:50text and I am going to delete it, so it's not even there.
03:54But if you look into the Project panel, it's still there.
03:56It says Title2, and I can change name to whales by selecting it. And now I am
04:04going to go back into the Tracker panel by selecting my clip, choosing Motion
04:07Tracking mode again, No, and I see this is where my track is.
04:12So I am going to make sure I am at 0, and I am going to go into my Project panel,
04:17click on the whales, hold and drag, and let go.
04:22What do I want it to say? "Watch for whales!"? Yes, I do.
04:24So click OK and now it's part of that. So I can actually just click and hold it
04:31and move it behind the boat, and it's a little bit small in the viewer, but I
04:37will make it a little bit bigger and we will see what happens.
04:41So now I keyframed it, I press play, and this is one of those instances where
04:52we've provided a ton of data to the computer and it is just not processing in real
04:57time, even though we've got a pretty quick computer here.
05:00So I am going to clean this up a little bit by dragging the ends, so let me
05:03press Enter, and we will render that out.
05:05Okay, so we are done, and now you can see the boats cruising along and the
05:13text, Watch for whales! is following it.
05:15So you can add all kinds of fun things to your projects and attach them to
05:21moving objects within the videos, all in Elements 10.

Using the Effects Mask tool
00:00So, what if you had an interview such as the one we have here and you want to
00:03apply a mask on her face?
00:06You've seen it on TV before where they have some kind of a key witness to the
00:09murder or some celebrity that's cheating on another one and you want to mask
00:15them so you don't know exactly who it is.
00:17So, that's pretty easy to do here in Elements.
00:20Let's take a look how. So, I have this clip--
00:22I'll just show you a little bit--- of her talking, and I want to mask her.
00:27I don't want anyone knowing who she is.
00:29So, I can right-click here on the clip, go down, remember our right-click menu,
00:35and down here it says Effects Mask, and I'm going to Apply. And what that does is
00:41it creates a duplicate of the clip, just the video only, on another layer above,
00:47and now this box here, whatever I choose to put behind it is going to be masked.
00:52So, let's go up here, and I want to make sure I cover her face.
00:56That's looking pretty good.
00:58Let me just scroll through this, and that looks good.
01:05A person that you're masking, if they move their heads back and forth or they
01:08stand up, you have to do things like keyframe, which we'll talk about later,
01:12but on this particular one, she's sitting down talking and we're just going to
01:16mask her out.
01:17So, let me go back to frame 0, and now I'm going to go into my Edit Effects, and
01:22inside of my effects I'm going to Video Effects, and I'm going to look under the
01:25Show All, and Stylize, and let me just bring this down a little bit.
01:31I am looking for Mosaic.
01:34So, I could have easily just typed in Mosaic here and it would have found it.
01:38So I want to make sure that this clip is selected, my mask, and here's a preview here.
01:43So, we see that's what's going to have an effect applied to.
01:46I'm going to drag it onto the clip, and now you can't see her. And we're going to
01:51edit that a little bit and clean it up a little bit.
01:53So, I'm going to go into Mosaic. And there're really only a couple of options
01:59where I can change the horizontal or the vertical blocks, so let's see what
02:03that looks like.
02:04If I bring it all the way up,
02:05it doesn't do too much, but just a little bit.
02:07It adds a little more blockage. And then this one, if I bring it too far, it
02:12does some weird stuff.
02:14So, we're just going to leave it like about right there.
02:17And Sharp Colors bring some of the color through that make it sharp.
02:20So, if you want that kind of a look, you can. It looks like some ancient video
02:23game, but we're not going to do that.
02:26So, once again you'll see the red line. That means we might have to render this.
02:30Let's press play and see what happens.
02:31(Female speaker: It's interesting because with BDN it's a sort of duality.)
02:35So, that's not such a demanding effect, and it's only to a small area, that I
02:39don't really need to render this, but if you want to or your computer is
02:43playing slow, then you can just press the Enter button and it will render this
02:47out, but as we can see--
02:51(Female speaker:--having youth help youth. So it's--)
02:52--we have her totally covered.
02:53So, adding an effects mask onto your footage is easy to do in Elements 10.
Collapse this transcript
Videomerge and Green Screen
00:00So we've all heard of green screen out there.
00:02You hear it on the big movies, green screen this, green screen that.
00:05Well, when people shoot in front of green screens or blue screens, you are using
00:10this because you want to cut this green screen out--
00:13it's easy to cut out because it's a solid color--and you wanted to just show the person.
00:18So, Premiere Elements has a very simple fix for this called Video Merge and as
00:23long as you have something that's pretty well lit, which this really isn't, but
00:29it is still going to work.
00:30We've got some shadows over here.
00:31It should be really lit evenly, but we're going to make it work.
00:34So, I'm going to click on my file and really quickly, I have this file of her and
00:39then below it is a background of a piano that I thought would be kind of cool.
00:43So, I'm going to click on it, I'm going to right-click, and I'm going to choose
00:48Apply Videomerge, and click the button and Video Merge just goes in automatically,
00:54takes out all the green, and it's looking pretty good.
00:57If you need something quick, down, and dirty, this is pretty good.
01:01I'm going to press the Enter button just to render this really quick.
01:06And now we'll press play, and it's not too bad.
01:10I mean if you look really carefully, if you know what you're looking for, I can
01:13see some kind of ghosting up here, because the green completely come out.
01:18You select the clip and choose Edit and you look at the video right here,
01:22you'll see right here the green didn't come out.
01:25So, it's got its limitations, but if you're looking for something that's just
01:29ready to go out of the box and will provide a pretty decent job, Video Merge is
01:33going to do it for you.
01:35If you've got something more difficult then you really should consider moving
01:38up to something like a Premiere Pro, that's got a lot more advanced keying
01:43instruments in it.
01:45Now, there is another fix that we could do.
01:48We can go into Video Effects, and then we're going to look under Keying, and
01:53Elements ships with something called a garbage matte, and garbage mattes are just
01:58helping us get rid of things that we don't want in our video.
02:01So, I'm going to choose this Four- Point Garbage Matte just to start out with.
02:06I'm going to drag it up there, and now we're going to click on Edit Effects, and
02:12here's my garbage matte.
02:13So, if I select it here in the Edit menu, what I can do is I've got those four
02:18handles again like the tracker and like the anchor point, they are the same
02:22symbol, but these are going to allow me to tighten up that videomerge.
02:26So, I'm going to grab this and I don't want to go too far, because that happens.
02:32She becomes the invisible woman.
02:33So, I'm just going to go as close as I can to her head.
02:36I'm going to make sure this still lets her be shown.
02:39And you've to be careful because if she waves her hands out or whatever,
02:43it's going to disappear.
02:44Then we'll grab this corner one.
02:46We'll clean that up a little bit. And last but not least, we'll bring this one in.
02:52And then I'm going to render that again.
02:59So, now since that ghosting, that artifact that I had, is outside of this mask,
03:04we don't see it anymore.
03:05It's gone and I'll turn off the mask just for a second, and here it is again.
03:10You can see it's kind of fuzzy. You see it up here.
03:12If I put it on, it's gone.
03:15There's also, if I go back into the effects, an Eight-Point Garbage Matte, so we
03:20can detail it even more,
03:22if we want to bring it in here. It's just a lot more precise as well.
03:25So, it's something quick and dirty like this and then taking some time to use the
03:30garbage mattes to clean them out.
03:32So, doing green screen in Premiere Elements is not hard at all and lots of fun to do.

Creating and using effect presets
00:00So, I have this clip here of the downtown and I want to add that cartoon,
00:05because I'm just into that cartoon look.
00:07So, I'm going to go into my Effects, and do the dropdown menu and look for it,
00:12but it's already there. So, I'm going to choose that and get a little bit of real estate.
00:16So, let's drag this down. And here it is.
00:19I want to drag it onto my footage.
00:21I can also go down onto the actual clip, but I'll just go here. And that looks
00:25really cool, like, I really wish I could draw like that.
00:28Let's just play that for a second.
00:30Pretty fun!
00:34Now, if I click on the clip and go into the Edit Effects and click my down
00:38arrow, I can see that I have this other toggle box, and if I go down, there are
00:43all these different types of presets that were already made for me.
00:48So, we're on Animation now, but what is Hallucination?
00:51Well, yeah, I can kind of see that's a hallucination right there.
00:55Pencil Test.
00:57Okay, that's kind of cool too.
00:59Really Bad Dream, now that's fun.
01:01Oh, that looks crazy.
01:03I'm going to just scroll over that.
01:04Yeah, I don't think I've had some dreams like that.
01:06I want to go back to Animation because I just kind of like that one, but I want
01:11to do some changes on it.
01:13So, I'm going to toggle down my lines.
01:16I'm going to make my lines have a little more density.
01:20So, I'm going to just drag this over, let go, and I've got little more density.
01:26Maybe the Width, I'd like them to be a little bigger.
01:29See them getting bigger right there? And I'm going to leave the rest alone.
01:36And now I'm going to go into Paint.
01:39So, maybe I want smoothness to be a little better,
01:42so I'll add that.
01:45That's a little nicer.
01:46So, that's great.
01:47So, I'm pretty happy with that, but what if the next scene I decide I want
01:54the cartoon look on there too?
01:55So, I would have to actually go back into my Effects and drag it on here,
02:01and you know what?
02:02It's going to be a different effect than the first one, because I'd changed it.
02:07So, what can I do?
02:08I'm going to go back into my first one.
02:11Notice the presets say None now
02:13because I took the animation, I did some changes, so it no longer was its own
02:18preset like it came with the box.
02:20But if I right-click here, I can choose Save Preset. And I'm going to change
02:26this to Dave's Cartoon Look and leave this to default and press OK.
02:35Now, when I go to my next clip and select it and go to Edit > Effect, I can do the
02:43dropdown menu, actually right here where it says Video Effect, and look for My
02:48Presets. And guess what? There's Dave's Cartoon Look.
02:53Now, I just need to click and drag it on here or onto the footage and now this
02:58matches the first clip.
03:02All the things I did in the first clip are exactly the same, the lines and everything.
03:09So, this is going to come in really handy as you start to add a lot of effects
03:13or color correct and you want the color to be standard throughout the movie.
03:17You want to start creating your own presets and saving them, and the good news
03:22is you can always go back to them later and add them to other projects.
03:25Now, let's check out one more way that I can do that.
03:29So, I'm going to look for some other footage, this little clip right here
03:33and add it there.
03:34So, this has nothing on it.
03:36I want to add some stuff on here,
03:39so I'm going to right-click and choose Copy, and then I'm going to click on
03:44this clip and choose Paste Attributes, and let's see what happens.
03:49Well, there it is.
03:51Now if I select that clip, go into my Edit window, choose Edit Effect,
03:57there's my Cartoon Plus right there.
04:00It has all the presets because it says None. It doesn't say Dave's Cartoon,
04:04but it is that.
04:05So, this is yet another way to add the same effect to multiple clips within the Timeline.

Making color adjustments using effects
00:00Now, as we're getting close to being done with your movie and you want to make
00:03your movies pop out, I highly suggest color correcting.
00:07So, while this is a really nice shot, the footage is really kind of blah.
00:12I mean the colors are muted.
00:13I don't if it was a cloudy day or not, but it just doesn't really excite me at all.
00:18So, what should I do? Well, I'm going to go into my Edit menu and look at my effects, and I'm going to
00:24choose my Color Correction effects.
00:28And I've got two options: the AutoTone and Vibrance and the new Three-Way
00:33Color Corrector.
00:34This one, as you can see in the name, does an automatic fix for you, and you can
00:39do some tweaks, but it really does it all for you in one shot.
00:42If you're more courageous, you can really go and make your own unique looks
00:47using the Three-Way Color Corrector.
00:49So, let's take a look at both of them.
00:51I'm just going to select them and drag it onto my footage. I can also drag it
00:55down here, but I'm just going to drag it there. And right away you see that the
00:59greens really came up and the reds here, and it pops things out a lot more.
01:05AutoTone affects the brightness, the contrast, the exposure, the blacks and the
01:11whites, which are shadows and highlights, and it does it all automatically.
01:15Now, I can select my clip as I can other effects and go in there, and if you
01:20notice, if I turn it off, we're back to that same muted look. But we can really
01:26see how by turning it on and having that as part of your clip, it changes the
01:30colors dramatically.
01:31There're also some dropdowns here, so I can really tweak the Vibrance a little more.
01:39I can change my brightness, contrast, and exposure, and my blacks, and my whites.
01:45But I like that.
01:46It's all Auto, and I'm in a hurry, so I'm going to leave that alone.
01:50Also keep in mind I can right-click here and make a preset, as we did before.
01:55So, that is how that works.
01:57Now, let me toggle this off for a minute, change it back, and go back into the Effects.
02:02Let's try the Three-Way Color Corrector now.
02:05I'm going to drag it on, and nothing happened, but it's there.
02:08I can see it right here.
02:09So, I'm going to click on Effects, and let's start to do some changes here.
02:16So, now if I choose the Preview Tonal Ranges and select that, I can see all
02:21these items, and what does this mean?
02:23It looks kind of crazy, right, or the cartoon look again? No.
02:26What this is showing me is a preview of the tonal ranges.
02:30The tonal ranges are the grays, whites, blacks, or midtones, highlights,
02:36and shadows.
02:37So, they're all color coordinated here.
02:39The gray are all my midtones.
02:42Then the highlights, or maybe that's where the sun shining or there's light there,
02:46are my whites. As we can see, there's not a whole lot right there.
02:49My shadows, however, I've got a lot of shadows.
02:53So, I can manipulate all of those.
02:55So, I'm going to uncheck that, and now I know what I'm working with.
02:57I'm going to go into my grays, and this would look a lot better if it was maybe a
03:03little bit of a warmer day.
03:05So first, what I'm going to do is set my Gray Balance.
03:08So, let's look at some type of a midtone here, and I'll take the eyedropper. And
03:14I'm going to select this kind of a brown color.
03:17That's my balance.
03:19And now I'm going to start to move around and change this.
03:22And you see if I go to an extreme, in any direction, it really tweaks it out and
03:29makes it an odd color.
03:30So, you really want to go just subtly.
03:33So, I'm going to go a little bit warmer there. And if I want to saturate it a
03:38little more, I've got areas to do it down here.
03:42Midtones Balance Magnitude, my Gain, and my Saturation is down here.
03:47So, you can really, really geek out and have a lot of control over what you're doing.
03:52So, we'll leave those alone for right now, and let's check out highlights.
03:57Now I do see, if I click on it once again, I really have only got a couple of highlights.
04:02I've got white selected.
04:04So, I'm going to leave the Highlights alone.
04:06They're not really something that's bothering me, but I might look at my shadows
04:09and see if I can do something with them and bring them up a little bit.
04:12So, I'm going to click on the shadows and if I go extreme, you can see they
04:17start changing colors.
04:18So, now what if I wanted to go a little bit maybe greenish blue and did that?
04:25And if I went down here and maybe upped my Saturation just a little bit.
04:29So, that's kind of a unique look.
04:31It's definitely not that flat look that I had before, but actually now looking
04:35at, it reminds me of 1970s horror movies.
04:38Let's turn it off for a moment.
04:41There is that muted look. Turn it back on.
04:44We've got more reds, the greens look a little better, the sky looks different.
04:48So, you can see how you can make your own looks using the Three-Way Color
04:52Corrector. And once again, I can click on it, Save Preset, and go in add it to a
04:58future clip so that they're all matching.
05:00So, as we can see, in Elements, you can have a quick fix like this and you can
05:06also create a unique look.
05:08In any case, Elements really gives you a lot of power color correcting
05:12your movies.

6. Animating Effects and Clips
Understanding animation
00:00Adding animations to your clips may sound like a daunting process, but by
00:04learning the basic concepts, you're going to be a master in no time.
00:08So what animation is is the process of making things do something, whether it's
00:13moving left to right from A to B, rotating,
00:17going in and out of opacity or scaling.
00:20Now let's say I want to move something from this side of the screen to the left.
00:24Let's find something to move.
00:26I'm going to go into my Edit menu and look in to the Clip Art. Elements ships
00:32with a lot of clipart, and I'm going to choose something like this wonderful
00:35little bunny, and drag it on, and here it is.
00:40What if I want to make the bunny go from right to left?
00:43Well, let's go into the Edit menu, and we'll choose Effects, and then
00:49we'll choose Edit Effects.
00:52The process of doing that is creating a keyframe.
00:56We're going to have to do this quite often if you want to animate.
01:00So the process of that--I'm just going to expand this a little bit.
01:02If I want to go from this point in time to this point in time, I have to change values.
01:08I've go to have a value set here, in the beginning, and then if I go here and I
01:13move him to left side, the value is changed his position within the frame here.
01:18So now if I move back, nothing is going on, because I haven't set any keyframes.
01:23Let's go back to 1.
01:25So in order to do that, I need to down arrow the Motion tab here. And on the
01:30far right you'll see this stopwatch, and that stopwatch means Show Keyframes,
01:36so I'm going to click on that.
01:38Now I can change its Rotation, Opacity. Let me just bring this down a little bit,
01:44because I really don't need to go into the Timeline anymore.
01:47I can do all of my animations right here.
01:50I can change his Position, Scale, Rotation, Anchor Point, by selecting the toggle
01:57animation button, and it looks like a little stopwatch.
01:59So remember, if you can see the stopwatch, that means something can be animated.
02:03And we'll click on that.
02:05Elements wants to help you out so bad that it creates your first keyframe for
02:10you, so you only have to do a second one to get things moving.
02:13So what this is telling us here is that at frame0--we're up here at frame0--
02:20Elements has said, okay we're setting a position keyframe here, and these are the
02:25numbers that it's at.
02:26It's at this scale, its rotation is 0 right here, its anchor point is this
02:34number, and that's all locked into these little keyframes here.
02:39Let me go ahead in time.
02:41Let's go to about right here. And the rabbit is going to jump, right,
02:45because rabbits jump.
02:46So if I grab this and bring him in the area right here, this has created a
02:53position keyframe, because I moved his position from this area to up here, and
02:59Elements creates a keyframe right here, or a diamond I call them. So it said at
03:05this point we've moved the rabbit to that.
03:08Now let's go back to 1.
03:10Here we're at this position, and if we go to this next keyframe button and click
03:14it, it'll take you to the next one. And see, our numbers have changed. Nothing
03:19else has changed, because we didn't do any changes to them.
03:21And if you see this dotted line here, well that's called a motion path.
03:27It went from this keyframe to that keyframe and this is the path it
03:31took, straight ahead.
03:33Now what if I wanted to change the path?
03:35Well, I can go back one and I can either click here to create a new
03:40keyframe or I can simply go in the viewer and drag him down. So maybe he has
03:44got like a little weird hop.
03:46So, he hops up fast and then lands. So let's go back to 1, and I'm just going to
03:52press the spacebar to play. So the bunny rabbit jumped up, and it actually
03:57looked pretty smooth.
03:59So now he's stuck up there.
04:01I'm going to go ahead in time a little bit and I'm going to add another keyframe
04:06right here. And this keyframe, because I didn't make any changes, is going to
04:12keep the same value as the previous keyframe.
04:15Let's take look.
04:16We're at 397:130 and if I go back, we're at 397:130, so let's go ahead.
04:23Now why did I do that?
04:24Because he jumped up and paused for a second, and now he is going to jump down.
04:29So I'm going to go to the end of my animation and I'm just going to drag the
04:34rabbit down to the ground.
04:37It added my next keyframe.
04:39Let's go back to 1, press the spacebar, he jumps up, he pauses, and now he jumps down.
04:45So as you can see, you need more then one keyframe to do an animation, and you
04:53can have a lot of keyframes to make the animation do different things.
04:58Well, maybe I don't want him to stay up here that long.
05:02Let me just select that keyframe.
05:04I can go into the next keyframe, click and hold, and I can drag it in.
05:10So now he doesn't stay there that long. And let's go to the last keyframe.
05:15Maybe this is too long for him to jump. He is jumping really slow. After all, he
05:19is a rabbit, he is pretty fast, so I want to drag this and bring it over quite a
05:24bit, and let see how that pays out.
05:26Let's press the spacebar. He jumps up and then boom, quick jump down.
05:32So keyframe animation is essential to making things move in Elements, to making
05:38effects do different things.
05:40Maybe you want an effect to happen at the beginning of a clip and then you want
05:43to keyframe it out or make it do something different in another point in time.
05:48And we're going to get really into this in the next few videos, but keyframe
05:52animation in Elements is easy to learn and lots of fun to do.
Collapse this transcript
Animating video effects
00:00As I said in the last movie, keyframes are essential, and we're going to do some
00:04more keyframes now, but we're going to do them to a video effect.
00:08So I've got some footage here, and I'll just press the play button. And I think
00:14this would be really cool in my video if I had more like a line drawing or even
00:19a cartoony kind of thing.
00:21I am going to do line drawing.
00:23So with the clip selected, I'm going to go into Edit and then Effects, and in the
00:28Effects, instead of going through all of these, I'm just going to go in here,
00:32search bar, and type in line, and that's going to bring up my Line Drawing
00:38effect and we'll just drag that on. And as you see, it's looks pretty cool, like
00:42a blueprint almost or something really cool. So I want to change colors.
00:47So I am going to select it.
00:48I am going to go into Edit Effects and you see it down here, Line Drawing. So I
00:55want that window that shows me the keyframes.
00:57I am going to click on it and now I can see the window here.
01:02I like to do that.
01:03That's my workflow, because I want this all to be close by when I'm working.
01:07I don't want to go back down tp the Timeline.
01:09I want to be right here.
01:11So now with my line drawing selected, I am going to click the Toggle animation.
01:17This gives me some options. Do I want the paper to be a certain color, the ink
01:22to be a certain color, and I can choose to change the density as well.
01:26So now let's go from here, and I am just going to go into the middle more or
01:31less. And I want the ink to stay black, but now as it goes out, I want 9it to
01:38change to a different color.
01:40I want to choose like a blue. Click on this color icon within the ink and it
01:45brings up my color picker, and I am going to look around for a nice blue,
01:50something like that. Click OK.
01:53So, now as I play this, and we'll press the play button, it goes from that
02:02and then it's going to hold for a little bit, and now it's going to turn blue.
02:07And now it's blue.
02:09So I've animated the color going from black to blue.
02:14You can do the same thing for the paper. So I am going to go into the middle
02:18here, keyframe the paper, go ahead a little bit.
02:23I am going to change the paper now. Because it's blue, we'll do something kind
02:28of fun like a weird red here. And let's go back to 1, and we'll press play, so
02:34I'm going from that color to red, and there is the blue.
02:45Now, we have a lot of effects here. And let's just go back into this Effects panel.
02:50There is so many effects here.
02:52Every one of them can be animated, so I'll go in there and start playing with
02:56the different things that you can do, like here's noise, so we can add
02:59some crazy noise to this.
03:01Let's drag that on, and now I've got some noise. And I am going to edit my effects
03:05again and go down to noise, toggle my noise animation and I've got keyframes
03:13there now. And at the beginning I'm going to lower the amount of noise. As you
03:21see, it plays on, it gets a lot noisier, and then it's really noisy.
03:26So go in there, be creative, and try out the different effects.

Using keyframes with motion effects
00:00So now that you're a keyframe master, let's take a look at how to animate some
00:04more motion, as we did in the first exercise within this chapter.
00:09So I've two clips here, some dancing. Underneath it is the dance studio.
00:15I'm going to right-click here and delete and close my gap. And I think it'd be cool
00:21if this footage came spinning in and scaling from 0% to 50% in this corner here,
00:28so I'm going to do that. That's my little intro animation.
00:32I am going to choose that clip by clicking on it.
00:35I lam going to go into Edit > Edit Effects, and now I'm going to down arrow the motion.
00:41And what do I like to do?
00:42Well, I like to click on my Show Keyframes button, because I want to do my
00:46work up here.
00:48So I want to give myself a little room to work, and I'm going to choose
00:52Toggle animation.
00:55So now I've got all my animation going. And if I move, you see I am moving my
01:00keyframe. But I don't want to do that.
01:03I am going to press Command+Z to go back Ctrl+Z. What I want to do is scale.
01:10I can scale here in the middle, but I want to scale up here on the side,
01:13so I am going to scale down to what I think is a good size, and I'm going to
01:18stop right there.
01:19Now I'm going to select this and go up to this area, and that's where I want
01:26this to stop.
01:28So what I can do now is go to my end of my video and in the Position area I'm
01:33going to click on Add Keyframe. And now this keyframe has this position.
01:41So my beginning and end, it's going to stay in the same position.
01:44So now I've got a scale, so I'm going to go down here to 0 and maybe about right here,
01:54let's type in 40%, and there it is.
01:58Now let's just take a look at that. I'll press the spacebar, and we're going to
02:04go from nothing to them dancing, a nice picture-in-picture, and everything
02:11looks great!
02:13So now let's add little spin to it, literally.
02:15I am going to go here and make a keyframe for my rotation, but I already have
02:21one, right, because I turned on my Toggle animation. So I am going to go to
02:26about right here and I am going to start rotating.
02:30Now I can just do it here and click on it or I can move it. So let's just
02:33click on in it.
02:34I want to go one time, so that's one time 360 degrees.
02:43That's two times 360 degrees, so let's take a look at that.
02:46We'll go back to 0, and let's press the spacebar, and here it is. Extra,
02:52extra, read all about it.
02:53There is dancing at the Santa Barbara Dance Arts Academy.
02:56So as you get more and more into animation, you can see that it really brings
03:01your movies to life when you move things around.

Working with keyframes directly in the Timeline
00:00Elements gives us yet another way to add keyframes and make things move, and
00:05that's in the Timeline.
00:07So we got two pieces of footage here, everybody dancing actually, and then
00:12I will move over and we will see underneath this this nice pan shot of Santa Barbara.
00:17And I am going to right- click and Delete and Close Gap.
00:20I want to fade in first of all from this, so I am going to select this footage.
00:28And actually I need a little bit of room to work here, so if I right-click off
00:33to the side and do a Track Size, I am going to choose Medium.
00:38Now you might not see this down arrow right here.
00:41This is Opacity. So if your footage is closed like that, you might not see
00:45anything, but let's spread it out a little bit,
00:47a little zoom, and I have got room now to work.
00:51Keep in mind, you see this yellow bar? Well, we are going to be using that
00:55quite a bit.
00:56So first I have Opacity, so I select the yellow bar, I go back to frame 1, which
01:02I am at, all right, Add/Remove a keyframe.
01:05I am going to add a keyframe, and there it is.
01:07I am going to go ahead maybe right there and I'm going to add a
01:12second keyframe.
01:14And I am going to zoom out just a little more, give me some more room.
01:16And what did I say before?
01:18We needed two keyframes to do an animation.
01:21So we've got them.
01:22So now I can go over that first keyframe, click and select it, and drag it down,
01:28and my bar turns blue, which means I am doing something. And as you see the
01:33numbers, well, I am going from 100% Opacity down to 0.
01:40And now let's go back, and here's the footage underneath.
01:43Let's press play. A nice little fade-in.
01:47So I think when they are done with their little dance, we are going to
01:52transition this video into a picture-in-picture.
01:56So let me go back a little bit.
01:57So right about here, I'm going to look at my arrow here and choose Position.
02:07I can't do anything here. Why not?
02:09Because I need to click on the yellow bar.
02:12Now I can do this.
02:13I want to add a keyframe right there at that position, and we are going to come
02:18back to Position in a second.
02:20So now I am going to scale, so let's go back to Scale.
02:23I am going to select the Scale and press Add Keyframe, so I have got a keyframe
02:28right there for Scale. And I'm going to go ahead a little bit here and I'm going
02:34to add a second keyframe.
02:36So now I am over my second keyframe and you see the 100 value, so that means
02:41I'm at 100% scale.
02:44So I went up. Everything is zoomed in.
02:47I am going to press Command+Z to undo, Ctrl+Z on the PC.
02:50Let me move my Time Indicator.
02:52We go from 100 and see, it goes to 0, so I am just going to get on the 27,
02:59because I don't have much of real estate here.
03:02Now I can also go to my Time Indicator right there and select this and do it manually.
03:10And if I hover over here, you see I am at 49%.
03:15So we have got our fade-in, and then we zoom in, and now we are going to move
03:22it into the corner.
03:24So let's go back to that position keyframe.
03:26So we already have one.
03:28So I want to add a second one now.
03:31On this particular one, I am just going to hold down and drag this into the
03:34corner, and I've added my second keyframe.
03:38We have a new position, and now let's play this animation out.
03:43Fade in, they are doing their dance, and now we are going to start zooming in
03:51and going into a nice picture-in-picture.
03:56And we can add rotations and all kinds of things, so you really have a lot of
04:01options to add your keyframes and make things move in Elements 10.

7. Create, Add, Edit, and Mix Audio
Recording voiceovers and narration
00:00So you just edited your amazing video of Junior's first baseball game.
00:05So why not add some play by play.
00:07Well, that's easy to do by adding voiceovers in Elements.
00:11Let's take a look.
00:12So down here I have got my little intro Santa Barbara footage into my
00:16dancing, and I am going to welcome people to Santa Barbara and to get ready
00:21for the performance.
00:22So we go up here into this little speaker icon.
00:26It's the audio tools.
00:27We are going to click down, and there are four things that we are going to look
00:30at, but in this particular video, we are going to talk about Add Narration.
00:34So we are going to let that be selected, and this brings up the Record Voice
00:39Narration box, and you should be seeing some kind of a waveform here.
00:44We are not seeing it here at lynda.com.
00:46We have a pretty complex system, but I do know that it's being recorded.
00:50So if you're not seen it, you might want to go up into Preferences and then
00:55choose Audio Hardware. And through the dropdown box here, this particular one, we
01:01are using Built-in Digital Input/Built- in Line Output, you may want to check out
01:06Built-in Line Input/Built-in Output.
01:10But definitely play around with these until you find the right one, and click OK,
01:16and you should see this moving.
01:18Now this moves and it's too red, we get a lot of red up here, your volume levels
01:23are too high, and you want to use the slider here to move them around.
01:26Okay, and that's it.
01:28Once you have all this set up, you just need to press the red button to record.
01:32This is the play/pause narration.
01:35This button here goes to the previous narration clip, and this one goes to the
01:41next narration clip. So if you have a lot of narrations in your Timeline, it lets
01:44you go into all those and test them out.
01:46And in this of course is the trash, so if you hate everything, you can delete
01:51it right here.
01:52This button here lets you choose different Mic Sources, so we only have one
01:56currently, but you might have something plugged into your computer through one
02:00of the ports, and this is where you can find all that.
02:03So make sure that you are in the area of the clip that you want to start
02:07narrating and then just press the red button to start narration, and 3, 2, 1.
02:15Hello and welcome to Santa Barbara, where today we are going to see some amazing
02:20dancing from the Santa Barbara Dance Company.
02:23So let's get back in our seats and get ready to go.
02:26And then I'm going to pres Stop.
02:27And as you can see, it goes automatically into the narration track in the
02:33Timeline, and we will scroll back, and let's press play and listen to it.
02:39(David Basulto: Hello and welcome to Santa Barbara, where today we are going to see some amazing)
02:44(dancing from the Santa Barbara Dance Company.)
02:46(So let's get back in our seats and get ready to go.)
02:50And that's it.
02:51So I can also go down here and grab the clip by just selecting it and clicking
02:55on it and holding, and I can drag it around.
02:58So if I really wanted to start a little further in, maybe I have got a fade-in
03:03over here so I just want people to get warm and fuzzy about the street there
03:06and then my talking starts.
03:08(David: Hello and welcome to Santa Barbara, where today we are going to see some amazing)
03:13(dancing from the Santa Barbara Dance Company.)
03:16(So let's get back in our seats and get ready to go.)
03:19And that's it. It really is that simple to add voice narration in Premiere Elements 10.

Using SmartSound for great music soundtracks
00:00So we just finished our narration track, and to be quite honest with you, it's
00:04a little bit boring when I hear just myself speaking and no other sounds or anything.
00:08(David Basulto: Hello and welcome to Santa Barbara.)
00:11Maybe if I was giving a lecture on Santa Barbara, but this is not going to work
00:15for me, so I want to add some music or a score.
00:19So first thing I am going to do is make a little note of how long my clip is,
00:24these two clips together.
00:25So, I am going to go out to the end, and we are looking at like 56 seconds and 17 frames.
00:32And that's the number right here.
00:33So we will just make a note of that.
00:35Now I want to move my Current Time Indicator all the way back to 1, because I
00:40want my music to start here.
00:42I could move it in the middle and it will start there, but on this particular
00:46take, we want it to be right there.
00:49And now, the magic is going to happen.
00:50We just need to click on our Audio tools and select SmartSound.
00:57And that's going to launch Sonicfire Pro 5 and open your SmartSound
01:03Express Track.
01:04What we are going to do here is make some music. And the highlighted blue areas
01:08here are the ones that you own that are on your computer, so if I uncheck all of
01:13these, you'll see we just have these music pieces.
01:19If I click on SmartSound Store, we have the entire store, which is 3,542 songs,
01:27so that's quite a bit.
01:29It also has a searchable menu here.
01:31So if I am looking for cartoon sounds because they are all sound effects as well,
01:36some disco, Studio 54, I know what that is. Let's listen to that.
01:40(music playing)
01:47So if I was making that a Saturday Night Fever movie, that would be the exact
01:51way to go, I would think.
01:52But that's not going to work for us.
01:54But if I wanted to do that, I would have to go into this Buy button,
01:57because once again, we don't own it.
01:59It's not highlighted, and I would click Buy.
02:03This launches the Purchase area and yes, it's going to cost me $29.95 to use that song.
02:09Now I do own it forever, so if you plan on making a lot of disco movies,
02:13this is a great buy.
02:15There's also you can download the entire album, so there is a Classic Rock album
02:19is what it's called.
02:20And you would go to the SmartSound web site and make sure that those are all
02:24the songs you wanted.
02:26So to buy this one, I would click OK and it would automatically take me to
02:30pay and download it.
02:31And it would be downloaded onto my hard drive.
02:33Fortunately, I don't have a budget for this, so I am not going to buy this song.
02:37So we are going to cancel out of it.
02:40And we're going to go back and find something that we own, so I am going to
02:44scroll back in Style here and just choose All-60 Styles once again, and we are
02:50going to scroll back up to the top. And here are the options I have.
02:53I can also turn this off, like I said, so I don't have to entice myself by trying
02:57to find other songs, and there we go.
03:00So this shows you, it's a core foundation that ships with this particular
03:04product, and the Intensity, whether fast or slow on a tempo, so you can really
03:09get into all of that.
03:11And then I am going to search around, so let's try Julie's Place.
03:15(music playing)
03:22That's it. Groovy!
03:24Not only can I change the Variation, so let's say right now we are in
03:28Meanwhile, but it also has another couple of Variations,
03:30(music playing)
03:34And we will stop there, and here is Bud.
03:36(music playing)
03:43So you can tell there is a couple of different ways I can go.
03:45I particularly like the Meanwhile, so I am going to stick with that.
03:49And Mood here tells me, do I want a Full, do I want it to be Background.
03:53Let's listen to that.
03:54(music playing) It's a little more muted.
04:01Dialog. (music playing)
04:06So if you can hear me, that means that this Dialog might work for my dialog
04:10right, my narration.
04:12And then you can really get into it if you just want to hear drums, bass or
04:20drums and piano. And right next to it is the mixer so I can actually click on
04:28this and create my own mix, so I have my Drums, Bass, Piano, Vibes and
04:34Trumpet, so I can move this around and create my own mixer, and if that's
04:38something you want to do to be really micromanaging it all, then that's the way
04:41to go, so take a look at that.
04:43So I am going to stick with my Dialog because I am talking there.
04:48Now remember that number we had, Length? So I am going to change the
04:52Length right here.
04:54So we had 56:17, so we got 56 and 17 frames.
05:01I have to press Send.
05:03It's rendering out a little audio file for us and placed it right into the
05:07soundtrack area of the timeline.
05:09It's going exactly to the length that I wanted it to, and let's press play.
05:14(music playing)
05:18(David: Hello and welcome to Santa Barbara, where today we're going to see some amazing dancing)
05:24(from the Santa Barbara Dance Company, so let's get back in our seats and get ready to go.)
05:31So as you can see, Elements and SmartSound make a terrific pair when adding music
05:36or creating a soundtrack for your movies.

Applying audio effects
00:00Many times when you have video in your Timeline, the audio that comes with it
00:04might not just be perfect and we need to fix that.
00:06So what are we going to do?
00:08Well, we're going to take a look at some audio effects now.
00:10So I've got this interview, and let's just listen to a couple of seconds.
00:13(Female speaker: We're providing the students an opportunity. It's not something that--)
00:18So that's fine. I mean, she sounds okay.
00:20It's like echoy in there and a lot of noise, so I might want to fix that.
00:24So let's see some of the things that we can do.
00:26Let's just select that clip and we'll go into Edit and we'll choose Edit Effects.
00:33Off the bat, it's got two opportunities here.
00:35One is Volume and one is Balance.
00:38So I'm not going to mess with the Balance, but I'm going to look at the Volume,
00:41and maybe I'll raise it up a little bit here, 3.5 decibels, and let's listen.
00:45(Female speaker: --is that we're providing the students an opportunity. It's not something that's like tan--)
00:50So that's fine. She sounds a little louder, but it doesn't help us with our noise.
00:54Let's see what else we can do.
00:55I'm going to go into the Effects area here.
00:57If I down arrow and choose the Audio Effects, I have some audio effects.
01:03Not even close to the amount of video effects, but these are pretty handy.
01:06So let's take a look at right here, NewBlue Noise Reducer.
01:11So to add an audio effect, all I have to do is select it and I can drag it onto
01:16the footage or onto the clip.
01:18I'm going to drag it onto the footage.
01:20And here it is right there, you can tell.
01:23Now at anytime, I can just click on it and click the trashcan.
01:26It'll get rid of it. So let's listen to this.
01:28(Female speaker: What I think is great about EDN is that--)
01:32It's actually gotten rid of a lot of the noise, but it sounds a little muffled
01:35now, so maybe we'll tweak that a bit.
01:37Let's click on Edit Effects, and here it is.
01:40We'll press the down arrow. And now this Bypass check box is on most of the
01:46effects and all it's telling you is I want to bypass this effect.
01:49So we're not really going to be using that very often.
01:52Let's look at the Strength though.
01:55And the cool thing about audio effects is I can play them back in real time
01:58and listen to them.
02:00So let's go back to square one and let's press the play button.
02:04(Female speaker: What I think is great about EDN is that we're providing the students with an opportunity.) (It's not something that's, like, tangible, like food or toys; it's something that they really use to empower themselves.)
02:17So that's a little bit better, definitely better than this.
02:20(Female speaker: We're providing the students with an opportunity.)
02:23I mean you hear all kinds of things in the background.
02:26And if I put that back on--
02:28(Female speaker: We're providing the students with an opportunity. It's not something that's, like--)
02:31--it knocks out most of the noise.
02:33So take a look at the Effects window here and you can find a lot of
02:37audio effects.
02:38And I would take a look at them all and just see which ones you really want to
02:42work with, and know that there's a lot of different ways to change them and
02:46configure them to your liking.

Mixing audio with SmartMixer
00:00So before you let the world check out your awesome new video, you're going to
00:04want to do a little bit of mixing, cleaning up the audio a little bit and making
00:08the sounds all kind of melt together in a big pot.
00:12So let's take a look at how we would do that.
00:15Elements ships with two great audio tools, and one is called the Smart Mixer and
00:19the other one is just the Audio Mixer.
00:22The Smart Mixer is going to go in and say okay, we've got narration here and
00:27we've got dialogue here and we've got music here,
00:30and I'm going to go in there and fix this all for this guy and make sure that
00:34he's got keyframes, and it's going to sound great.
00:37So let's take a look at how that works.
00:39I'm going to click on Smart Mix and I'm going to choose Apply.
00:42But before I choose Apply, let's try Options first.
00:47And it's going to open up my Smart Mixer here and within this, it's telling me
00:51I've got Audio 1, which is this file right here; the interview, Narration, which
00:56is my narration track I recorded; the Soundtrack, which is back here; and then if
01:00I had anything on Audio 2 or 3, it would be here as well.
01:04And it gives me some options here. Do I want Audio 1 to be in the foreground, to
01:08be in the background, or disabled?
01:11So Foreground meaning it's prominent in our video, so we want to really hear that.
01:16The Narration track as well, we want to hear that, so we're going to keep that there.
01:20The Soundtrack is just kind of moving the video along for us, so we're going to
01:24keep that in the background.
01:25We don't want it to overpower these two.
01:27And now you just click Apply, and it's going to smart mix for you and there,
01:32it did it.
01:33So we've got two keyframes here and remember, we talked about keyframes.
01:38Two keyframes here.
01:39So basically it's going to go loud, lower, loud again, and then lower is
01:45here for the dialogue. So let's listen.
01:47(music playing)
01:52(David: Hello and welcome to Santa Barbara, where today we're going to see some amazing dancing)
01:57(from the Santa Barbara Dance Company, so let's get back in our seats and get ready to go.)
02:03(music playing)
02:17(Female speaker: What I think is great about EDN is that we're providing the students with an opportunity.)
02:21(It's not something that's, like, tangible, like food or toys; it's something that they can really use to empower themselves.)
02:29And that's it. If you're happy with that, you're done.
02:32You just pressed one button, made sure some settings were correct, and you can
02:35kind of go on your way and share this with the world.
02:37Me, I kind of want some things to be different.
02:41I want to be more hands-on.
02:43And actually underneath the Smart Mixer-- you can just down arrow it back up--is
02:48the Audio Mixer, which was right there.
02:51It's going to look like this.
02:52Now what does this do?
02:54Now this looks a little frightening, yeah, but no, it's not.
02:57You basically can use these levers here to go up and down and change the volume levels,
03:03so if you want something higher or lower. Why would I want to use this on this
03:07particular video that we're making? It's because
03:09I think the narration could be a little louder, and I think her audio could be
03:13a little bit louder.
03:15And so I'm going to do that manually, because we saw the Smart Mixer just took
03:18into account that there was audio on narration and on the interview tracks and
03:24that we wanted it in the foreground and it just made sure that that was at its
03:28normal levels and that the music in the background went to a lower level.
03:33So yes, I want the music to be a lower level, but I also wanted these to be a
03:37little bit louder, so it didn't do anything like that.
03:40So I'm going to go in here and choose File > Revert to go back to square one,
03:47and there we go.
03:49And now I'm going to use my mixer, move it over a little bit. And all I need to
03:55do is press play and start to move my levels around.
03:57So the first thing I'm going to do is my Soundtrack.
04:01So let's go to Soundtrack right here. Press play.
04:04(music playing)
04:07(David: Hello and welcome to Santa Barbara, where today we're going to see some amazing dancing)
04:13(from the Santa Barbara Dance Company, so let's get back in our seats and get ready to go.)
04:22I'll stop it right there.
04:24And you can see the mixer went in and made all of these keyframes.
04:28So anytime I just even gently moved it, it made keyframes.
04:31Not a big deal.
04:32They're all there and you don't have to do anything. Let's listen to that.
04:35(David: Hello and welcome to Santa Barbara, where today we're going to see--)
04:41So perfect! Now I just want to go in and fix my audio, which is on the narration track.
04:45So I'm going to start out with it being a little louder and we'll go press play.
04:52(David: Hello and welcome to Santa Barbara, where today we're going to see some amazing dancing)
04:57(from the Santa Barbara Dance Company, so let's get back in our seats and get ready to go.)
05:05So you can see I went from my normal volume, I raised it, and there we go.
05:10It sounds a lot better. Let's listen.
05:14(David: Hello and welcome to Santa Barbara, where today we're going to see some amazing dancing)
05:19(from the Santa Barbara Dance Company, so let's get back in our seats and get ready to go.)
05:26So I'm happy with that, and I'm going to move on to the last one.
05:29I'm going to go right about here and I'm going to bring this volume down because
05:34if I didn't, it would sound like this.
05:35(video playing)
05:38So now I'm thinking, do I want to hear the great music or hear her talk? So
05:41we've got to fix that.
05:42So I'm going to go over here and get ready with my soundtrack and press play.
05:47(Female speaker: What I think is great about EDN is that we're providing the students with an opportunity.)
05:52(It's not something that's, like, tangible, like food or toys; it's something that they really use to empower themselves.)
06:01And there it made all these different keyframes for me. Now if I listen--
06:04(Female speaker: What I think is great about EDN is that we're providing the students with an opportunity.)
06:11(It's not something that's, like, tangible, like food or--)
06:14And now I'm going to back and just bring her volume just up a tad, which is
06:19going to be in Audio 1, and let's do that.
06:21(Female speaker: What I think is great about EDN is that we're providing the students with an opportunity.)
06:26(It's not something that's, like, tangible, like food or toys; it's something that they really use to empower themselves.)
06:34And that's it. I'm done. I like it.
06:36I can now export this and make my movie.
06:38I made the audio sound a lot better by mixing the volumes using the mixer.
06:44So to mix audio quickly, let's try out the Smart Mixer.
06:47But if you want to be precise, try the Audio Mixer.
06:51It's a lot of fun.

8. Creating Titles
Creating and animating text
00:00So I just finished my intro to Santa Barbara, welcoming you into our
00:04dance company, and I want to add a little title that just says "Welcome to
00:08Santa Barbara."
00:09So let's take a look at how we add text into our videos.
00:13In the Preview Monitor here, we can go and click on the default text tool.
00:18It's a big T. Just click on it once, and it's going to make a text element.
00:25And one thing I did wrong was I wanted it to be right about where I'm going to
00:30start saying "Welcome to Santa Barbara."
00:32But wherever you have the Current Time Indicator, that's where it's going to
00:36place your text into the video layer.
00:39So, not a big deal.
00:41I'm just going to go--right about there
00:43I say "Welcome to Santa Barbara."
00:43I'm going to go out to this Title 02, which is my text, and just drag it over,
00:48click and drag, and then I might actually extend it just a little bit. That's good.
00:53So now I'm going to go into adding some text, and I'm going to change this and
00:57say "Welcome to Santa Barbara."
01:05And if you've ever used anything like Microsoft Word, you will be very
01:08comfortable in this because it's got a lot of the same tools.
01:12So here's my Selection tool, and I'm just going to drag this over into the
01:14middle a little bit.
01:15And I'm going to here and change my alignment to center alignment.
01:20That looks a little bit better.
01:21I can also go in and change different text fonts, so I can choose Courier or
01:28even the amazing Helvetica, which is worthy enough of making a whole movie on.
01:33So there's Helvetica, and I can go into bold or--so I'm just going to stay at
01:39Light Oblique for now.
01:41But what if I don't want to do that?
01:43I can also use text styles.
01:46So here's text styles.
01:47These are presets that you can choose, so here's Bell Gothic.
01:51It changes it to that.
01:53Here's another one, Charlemagne, Puffy.
01:58So there are a lot of different styles that it ships with, and you just have to
02:02go and find the one that you like.
02:04So this is nice, "Welcome to Santa Barbara," it's a nice font there and I'm
02:07happy with that.
02:08So I'm just going to leave that one alone.
02:10If I wanted to change the color of it, I could go in here and choose Color
02:15Properties and say you know what, I want this to be more of a green kind of a
02:20linear gradient it's got going on here, so that's kind of cool.
02:23I'm going to leave that alone. I like that.
02:25And you know what, I'm going to probably use this on future videos that I'm
02:29doing about Santa Barbara.
02:30So I'm going to go right here and choose Save Style, and I'm going to call this
02:35Dave's Green SB, for Santa Barbara and I click OK.
02:42And if I want to ever get to this later on when I'm making more titles, I just
02:45have to down arrow in the Text Styles and at the very end of all the presets
02:50is Dave's Green SB.
02:52So I just need to, for example, go into the Type tool here and type in
02:59whatever I want,
03:00and I can just click on that and it changes it automatically into Dave's SB.
03:06But I don't want that, so I'm going to erase that. And I'm liking this.
03:11It looks good.
03:12So now let's go back into the Timeline and as you can see, we have that red
03:17render bar going across.
03:18So we want that to be green.
03:20Let's go back a little bit.
03:22Let's press the Enter key, and let's start to render.
03:25(video playing)
03:30(David: Hello and welcome to Santa Barbara, where today we are going to see some amazing)
03:34(dancing from the Santa Barbara Dance Company.)
03:37(So let's get back in our seats and get ready to go.)
03:40And that's it. It looks great!
03:42Easy to do, easy to change, great to customize.
03:45Now what if you wanted to add an animation, something fading in that
03:50you'd like to have?
03:51So let's take a look at how to add an animation.
03:53I'm going to go down here.
03:55Now one thing about animation and text is it doesn't like to work with the
04:00presets, these text styles.
04:02It likes to work with just regular text.
04:04So let's choose the Text tool down here and you see I have my playhead moved, and
04:10I'm just going to write "Alina Interview."
04:15And that's Alina, one of the dancers and maybe I just want to have this down
04:18here, so we can see who it is.
04:22I might want to change the coloring a little bit.
04:23I'm going to go with the other stuff, so there.
04:27That's good, and I can go in there and change our font.
04:30So let's find something nice.
04:32It says Brush Script a little bit.
04:34So that looks kind of cool.
04:36So now I just want to add an animation.
04:38So if I close out the Text Styles and choose in Text Animation, I have some
04:44great options. And I'm going to just close this down a little bit so we can see.
04:48If I press the button, it'll show me.
04:50It kind of flies across, and that's kind of cool.
04:54There are many others that I can choose, but I'm going to stick with that one.
04:57It's nice and clean.
04:59And all I need to do is click Apply and it's going to apply the animation
05:03preset to that text.
05:05And now I'm going to go back into my Timeline and I'm going to get rid of this
05:11red bar here by pressing the Enter key, and it renders it out, and we'll see some animation.
05:17(video playing)
05:20Now one thing to keep in mind is that anytime you render anything in
05:24Elements, it's going to go back to the very beginning of your movie, even if
05:27you're ten hours into it.
05:28So that's something to keep in mind.
05:31So we're done here. Let's see what happens.
05:32(video playing)
05:34(Alina: What I think is great about EDN is that we're providing the students with an opportunity.)
05:39(It's not something that's, like, tangible.)
05:41So that was cool.
05:42I mean, it just kind of zoomed on, and I like the way it looked and of course,
05:45you can double-click here and go back in and change the animation if you like.
05:50So we can go try a different one.
05:53Let's try this one.
05:55We'll apply that. And I can change the color back to, say, white, because I wanted
05:59it to be a little more viewable.
06:02And now I can just go back and press the Enter key one more time and
06:05we'll render it out.
06:07And here I'll move my playhead back here and let's see what that looks like.
06:10(Alina: What I think is great about EDN is that we're providing the students with an opportunity.)
06:16That was an interesting little look and I don't know if I want to use that or
06:19not, but I can always go back and change that once again by double-clicking and
06:23finding the new animation.
06:24I actually liked the first one better, so I'm going to choose it again and click
06:29Apply, go back, press Enter. So there it is.
06:34That's easy to add an animation to your title.
06:37There are tons of presets.
06:38One thing I would do is go in here for sure and clean this up, so this would be
06:42welcome, and this is back in our Project Screen.
06:45So it doesn't say Title 01, Title 02.
06:47You know exactly what they are in case you have to go to them.
06:50In this we're going to write alina interview.
06:54So now anytime I need to go back, if I have a lot of interviews with Alina, I
06:57can just go in there and add them.
06:59Let's take a look at one other thing that kind of bothered me and I want to make
07:03it look a lot better.
07:06So in my Welcome Screen where I say, "Welcome to Santa Barbara" in my text right
07:10here, it kind of just ends abruptly and let's just scroll, and it just pops off.
07:16I kind of want to do a nice little fade-out.
07:19I know what you're thinking.
07:20I'm going to go in and click on my Edit menu and choose Transitions and I'm
07:25going to drag this Dip to Black.
07:27But let me show you what happens if I do that.
07:29So let's just drag it on.
07:31Let me render that really quickly, and we'll skip ahead here, and let's press
07:36the spacebar.
07:37(David: Santa Barbara Dance Company--)
07:40It not only faded that out, but it also faded out the video below.
07:44So anytime you add an effect or a transition to something on top of the text or
07:50maybe you have five layers of text or other videos,
07:53that's always going to work its way down to whatever is below.
07:57We don't want that.
07:59But we have a good friend in our Motion tab.
08:02So I'm going to select my text and I'm going to go into Edit > Effects and I'm
08:09going to choose Edit Effects.
08:12And now I've got my motion. And we're going to do our Show Keyframes, as
08:17we've done before.
08:19And now, like I said, I can work all in here.
08:22So at the end of the video, I'm going to go in here and we're going to look for Opacity.
08:27So let's look for the Opacity area, and we're going to set a keyframe and let's
08:32set a keyframe there.
08:34And I'm changing this to 0 and now we're going to scroll back and make that 100.
08:42So it should go from 100 down to 0.
08:48So let's take a look at how that works.
08:50I am going back to the beginning of my Timeline, and now I've got to render that
08:56red bar once again to show our animation.
09:00And now we'll pause it and skip ahead a little bit, and it fades out nice and subtly.
09:07(video playing)
09:10So I like that. I'm happy and that looks fantastic.
09:13Remember, you can always challenge yourself with ideas, with text, with
09:18animations, and have a lot of fun customizing things, and you can edit them at any time.

Creating lower thirds
00:00So if you have ever seen newscasts or television shows or interview shows and
00:05they always have some sort of what are called lower 3rds or an identifier showing who the
00:11person is talking or what channel you are watching, et cetera,
00:14we can do that right here in Elements too, and it makes it look fantastic.
00:18Let's take a look.
00:19If I go back to my Alina Interview and we had the nice animation, that's fine.
00:25But maybe I wanted to say Alina, Dance Instructor, so we kind of know who she is.
00:29I'm going to do something different here.
00:31I'm going to select that and delete it, and we are going to start from scratch.
00:35So let's get the Text tool one more time, and here is our default text. Then I
00:40am going to type in "Alina, Dance Instructor," and we will move it over a little
00:48bit. And it's a little big, so we will make it smaller, and we are going to choose
00:53a nice font like Helvetica.
00:55Let's make it a little smaller, and let's make it Light Oblique, so that looks nice.
01:02Now it says who she is and that can be my fade-ins and et cetera, but let's
01:07add a lower 3rd box.
01:09So you might notice also that there are some lines going around here, and we
01:14didn't discuss that yet, but those are called title-safe lines.
01:18Anything outside of these lines, if it's played on the television, will not be seen;
01:23you want everything to be kind of be inside these lines.
01:26Then on the Internet though it's going to be all over.
01:29You can see everything.
01:30Let's choose Rectangle. And I am going to make a bar going all the way across
01:36the bottom right here, and now that's great, and I am going to change the color.
01:40I want of kind of do some kind of green to go with the green here. Click OK.
01:45The only problem is I can't see my text, so I am going to right-click, make sure
01:49that I am right-clicking on the box, and see how it's highlighted? Right-click
01:54and choose Arrange and either Sent to Back or Send Backward, so we are just
02:00going to send it Back, and here is our text.
02:03And one thing I might want to do in my text is select my text once again, go
02:07into the palette, and let's add a little drop shadow because it's going to
02:10really make it stick out. There you go. Looks great.
02:14Now I am going to move this shape up here.
02:16We are probably going to use this one, but there are other ones we can use.
02:19Actually, I will just bring it over here to kind of hide of hide it for now.
02:21Or, you know what? I am going to make one from scratch again.
02:24Let's go in here and choose the Ellipse tool.
02:28This is kind of an interesting look.
02:30You can go kind of match our text over here a little bit.
02:34I can actually shrink the text a little, so I will leave that there.
02:39Let's go back in, and we will arrange that. We will send that to back.
02:44Let me just select it.
02:46Let's change the color again, and there you go.
02:49That's a little more artistic. And let's click on that one and get rid of it and
02:56choose the rounded rectangle.
02:58On this one, I might want to start here and bring it this way, drag it over a
03:04little bit, so I start with the square area and kind of come into a rounded area,
03:08and that's pretty cool too.
03:10So let's send that to the back, right- clicking and saying Arrange > Sent to Back.
03:14Here is my text.
03:16Let's change the color. And that looks pretty cool.
03:21Now within the Color Properties, I can also choose a gradient, so I want to do
03:25some kind of the gradient. And we can choose the first color. It can be like a green,
03:31and this one maybe a little darker, and we will click OK. So now I've got this nice
03:39gradient going down, and let me just clean it up a little bit, and we will drag
03:43this up a little bit right there, and that looks a lot better.
03:49So now let's make it a little longer, and I will move it over just a hair, and
03:53let's render that really quick.
03:55(video playing)
03:57And we will stop that and scroll forward, and let's see what it looks like.
04:01(Alina:--great about EDN is that we're providing the students--)
04:04So that looks a lot more professional. I like that.
04:07One last thing I would do is click on it and go to Edit, and we will choose Edit
04:12Effects, and we will choose Opacity. And now I might want to do a fade-in and
04:19this is really cool because I could just click here and choose Fade-In instead
04:22of adding all those keyframes we did before. And we are going to fade in.
04:27Let's see what that looks like. Re-render it.
04:31(video playing)
04:32(Alina: What I think is great about EDN is that--) There is nice fade-in.
04:38The last thing I want to do to make it a little better is I am going to go back
04:41on here and double-click so I have it selected, and I am going to right-click
04:46on the box, on this rounded rectangle, and I am going to go to Transform and choose
04:52Opacity and I am going to lower that to 75% so we can see through it a little
04:58bit, and then I am going to do one last thing, Edit Effects, and we will chose a
05:05Fade Out, so we have both.
05:08And now we are going to re-render it, and I think we are going to look great.
05:11And now let's take a look.
05:13(Female speaker: What I think is great about EDN is that we're providing the students with an opportunity.)
05:18(It's not something that's, like, tangible, like food or toys; it's something that--)
05:22That's fantastic.
05:24So Elements really gives you an opportunity to make some cool shapes, and those
05:29can really enhance your videos.

Using style presets and templates
00:00Adobe Elements 10 ships with some ready- to-go title templates that will really
00:03enhance your videos.
00:05Let's take a look at how those work.
00:06So we're going to launch Elements, and now I'm going to go into Edit > Titles,
00:16and this is where you would see all of your themes.
00:18So this particular theme is called Fun, so it's got four different templates in it:
00:24Fun Credits, Fun Frame--if I just press the button, it shows you, nothing
00:28is animated there--
00:29Fun Lower 3rd--nothing is animated there--and Fun Title, and there is
00:34nothing animated there.
00:36But if I go into Fun Credits and click the button, we see that the
00:40credits scroll up.
00:41So I kind of like that. I want to use that in my project.
00:44So I'm going to go right about here and make sure that's selected and choose
00:49Apply, and it applies it right there.
00:51So once again we're back into the Text tool, and we're going to type in End
00:56Credits. And then I'm going to go down here and start picking some people I
01:02want to acknowledge.
01:03So we have of course, Alina, dancer was in it, and then we're going to say, "Thank
01:09you too," and then we'll choose Santa Barbara, and to me, because I need thanks.
01:19We'll say thanks Adobe and lynda.com.
01:24So I'm done, and it's in there, and I can just use my Selection tool and let's
01:29go back here. And we have to render this once again, so when we see the red
01:32bar, let's press the Enter key. And let's go right here and press the spacebar,
01:40and here's our credits.
01:41So it's going a little bit fast, so I want to slow them down.
01:44I've still got more music here, so I'm just going to go, as we do with any other
01:48clip, and click on it and drag it to the end there so it snaps, and then we'll
01:53render that one more time, and then let's play that.
01:59(clip playing)
02:04So there are some nice credits going nice and slow. So that's done.
02:08Let's take a look at the lower 3rd, so let's go back in the middle here, and I
02:12want the dance company to be acknowledged here.
02:15So I'm going to grab this lower 3rd and just bring it down here on top.
02:20So I'm going to type in "The Dancers."
02:26Drag that right here, and once again we've got to bring back to the front now, so
02:30let's go Arrange > Bring to Front, and there's the dancers.
02:35And I might add a little drop shadow, and let's just render that out, and we'll play.
02:44So Premiere Elements 10 has some great and fun ready-to-use themes at your disposal.
02:48If this one is not particularly right for your movie, I would highly recommend
02:52downloading the other themes and content.

The Auto-Analyzer
00:00Adobe Premiere Elements 10 comes with a nifty little tool called
00:03the Auto Analyzer.
00:05And what it does is it allows you to take long clips and break them down into
00:10smaller ones that you might want to use in your movies.
00:14So, for example, this first clip I have here--and let me just move this over.
00:18It's called b-roll dance rehearsal 01, and it is four minutes long.
00:22Well, I don't know if I really want to have a four-minute clip in my Timeline.
00:27I might want some of the pieces of it though. So, yes, I can go in there and
00:31do it all myself manually or I can just select it, right-click, and choose Run
00:36Auto Analyzer.
00:39And it zooms through and says, "Analysis of this file has been completed."
00:43And what it does is it creates a new folder--so if we look up here, there is my
00:48original file and here is a new folder, and let's click on it--
00:53of a lot of little clips.
00:57So I went in there and said, well, at one point something happened in the clip
01:02that made the camera move to the right or the left or zoom in or do other things
01:07and that's when it made the little cuts for us.
01:10And let's just take a look at those little cuts.
01:12For example, here is a clip right here, and here are the in and out points, so
01:17it made them for us.
01:19So this is actually a little bit longer. And then let's look at another clip.
01:24Let's scroll down a little bit.
01:25We'll take a look at this one.
01:27Here is another clip that starts there.
01:30It's those two dancing, so it saw that they were in the scene and kept going, so
01:35I've got that. And maybe I'm just looking for something that she is dancing in.
01:38I've got it there.
01:39Now you can also see that I've got the handles, and if you remember back in the
01:43Trimming section, you can move these handles any way you want.
01:51So that is all done for you.
01:53Now let's take another look. If I close this up and I go back into my Icon view,
02:00here is that original file, but next to it--now if notice these other files
02:04don't have this little arrow.
02:06So that is pretty much the equivalent of a folder, down here.
02:13But in the Icon view they make it into an arrow, and what it does is it expands
02:17to the right, and let's click on it, and here are all your clips.
02:20So if you need to see them in bigger thumbnails, you can see them here like that.
02:28So as you can see, the Auto Analyzer really is a useful tool to break up big clips
02:34into a bunch of little ones.

InstantMovie and themes
00:00Adobe Premiere Elements 10 has a useful feature called the Instant Movie mode,
00:05and what is that? Well, that's exactly what it does.
00:08It makes an instant movie from clips that you select.
00:10So let's take a look at how we do that.
00:13So I have got some footage down here in folders, called broll_dance_rehersal,
00:17and I showed you how to make that in another movie on Auto Analyzer. So I am
00:22going to take a look. We are going to go into the Icon view. And I am going to get some real estate
00:26here, because I really need to see this. This is important right here.
00:29And I am going to make these bigger, and now I have all my clips. And I am just
00:37going to click on one that's going to deselect them all.
00:39So I am going to click on this one first, because I like that, and we will look around.
00:44I am going to hold my Command key down on the Mac, Ctrl key down on the PC, and I
00:49will choose this one, and we will keep going.
00:52I like this one of the boy dancing.
00:56This one looks interesting, maybe a little bit of a close-up there, some of this
01:01night movie stuff, and we will end with that.
01:07So once I am done with that, I just have to go Create Instant Movie, and it's
01:13going to ask me once again, what style do I want?
01:16So, if I had downloaded that extra content that I showed you, you would see
01:19it all here.
01:21So we are going to choose this one and click Next, and I am going to call
01:25this Dancing is fun! And DirectedByMe, yes. And you know what?
01:30I am going to leave the rest of the stuff in there.
01:33I am going to do an instant Auto Movie, Auto Edit and Auto Analyze the clip
01:39applied to the entire movie.
01:41Theme Music, I can choose the theme music that it has or no music at all.
01:46I can have sound effects.
01:47Here we are with that Smart Mix again, so if we have any interviews
01:51there, which I don't, I can click on that.
01:53It would look for those types of things.
01:57My Speed or Intensity, do you want a lot of effects, slower cuts, faster cuts?
02:01I am going to leave everything default on that.
02:03My duration, my sequence, what content I have, do I want to include it all, and
02:08do I want to have to pre-render it?
02:11So let's just Apply, and it's saying that I only have a clips totaling 2 minutes
02:16and 48 seconds, and I want to create an instant movie without repeating clips.
02:19I am fine; I want to repeat clips, because I want to show the essence of this dancing.
02:23So let's just keep on going.
02:25I am going to click No, and it's applying my movie, and it's telling me now that
02:32I have an InstantMovie. Do I want to render it for smoother playback?
02:35I think I do because there are a lot of effects, so I am going to click Yes,
02:40and we will just let it render really briefly.
02:46Okay, so we are done. And let me just scroll back up, but before I do, you
02:50can see that it made another folder called Fun and Instant movie, so let's
02:55scroll back up, and there it is in my Timeline.
02:58Let's see what it created.
02:59Actually let's give ourselves a little more real estate here, so we can see the viewer.
03:03It also added some markers here as you see, so let's press play.
03:09(video playing)
03:50Okay, so you can see that it made a nice, cool, little movie that's ready to go
03:55and get it up on the web, make a DVD, or any way you want to share it.
03:59So the InstantMovie tool is a pretty useful little feature in Elements 10.
Collapse this transcript
Smart Trim
00:00Adobe Premiere Elements 10 has a feature called the Smart Trim mode, and what it
00:06does is it goes in and takes a look at your videos on the Timeline and picks out
00:11clips that may be too shaky or dark, or just that have problems with it that the
00:16analyzer thinks has problems.
00:18So, it's kind of going to be like your overlord looking at what's going on within
00:23your movie in case you missed something.
00:25So, let's take a look at how that works.
00:26So, the tool is actually right here.
00:29It's called Smart Trim mode. And don't get it confused with our Split Clip tool,
00:33which are both a pair of scissors, but one's going to the right and one's going to left.
00:37So, we'll take a look at Smart Trim mode down here, and I'll click it once.
00:41It brings up a new panel here, Smart Trim mode, and a dialog box will pop up telling
00:47you that it's analyzing the clips.
00:48It actually takes a little bit of time,
00:50so I've sped things up and done it prior to this movie.
00:54And look at the options.
00:56It allows me to choose my Quality Level.
00:59If you go the right, that's higher quality and to the left, it's lower quality.
01:03So, it'll actually look for more problems on your right and less on the left, and
01:08same with the Interest Level.
01:10Now, one thing that's key here is you never want to have Automatic chosen, as far
01:15as I'm concerned, because it'll go in there,
01:18it'll analyze it, it'll pick clips it doesn't like, and it'll cut them
01:22off automatically. You have no say over them.
01:24So, I don't recommend that.
01:26Always keep it into Manual mode and then just choose Save.
01:29And at the end of it what you'll see are these little lines that are on the
01:34clips that it thinks is really bad.
01:37So, let's go over.
01:38Here's a clip of these handles.
01:40So, right away, if you look at it you might think well, it's blurry right here,
01:43but that's the look I was looking for, this depth of field.
01:46So, the analyzer doesn't know that, so it's thinking it's probably pretty bad.
01:49So, let's see what it says for my notes.
01:51See, it says Suggested Trimming, Blurred, Low Contrast.
01:55So, yes it's blurry, and maybe it's not as contrasty as it can be, but
02:00that's what I wanted.
02:01So, I'm not going to listen to it. But had I wanted to listen to it,
02:05I could go right here and go wow, that's a great idea.
02:07So, let's see what Smart Trim, you're brilliant,
02:10I'm going to go here and right-click and choose Trim.
02:13It's going to trim that clip out.
02:15Everything is going to go back to the left.
02:16It's going to ripple edit, as we've seen in other videos, and that's gone.
02:20So, it's trimmed that for me.
02:22And I can go to the next one.
02:23Let's see what that is.
02:24That's the dance studios.
02:26It's looking blurry here. I'm sure that's what it says.
02:28Let's see. Blurred and Shaky.
02:30So, let's just play that, and definitely blurred and shaky.
02:36So, if I don't want that and if I go, my god, the people are watching this, they
02:40are going to be angry that it's going to be blurred and shaky.
02:41I'm going to right-click. I'm going to select it, right-click, and trim that as well.
02:46So, if you're done with your movie and you want to just test out the Smart Trim
02:49mode, go ahead and run it and then take a look and see what kind of suggestions
02:53it's made, because sometimes they might be correct.
02:55So, you can always make your movie just a little bit better.

10. DVD Creation
Creating your first DVD
00:00So, you're done with your movie, and now you want to make a DVD to show the world.
00:04So, let's take a look at how we do that.
00:06So, here's my movie in the Timeline, and I want to make a DVD.
00:09So, I can go to Share here to make a DVD, but what I'm going to do first is
00:14create some chapter markers for my DVD.
00:17So, when I have it in the disc player, I can say okay, I want it to go to this
00:21point or that point and not just have to watch the whole thing every time
00:24from start to finish, because if you have a long movie, that might not be the
00:27best way to go.
00:28So, let's go back here, at 1.
00:32So, I might go here, and this little icon here it says Markers.
00:35I'm going to click the arrow and choose Set Menu Marker.
00:39It's going to open up the Menu Marker dialog box at 3 frames in.
00:43I'm going to type Intro and leave everything else to default as a scene marker.
00:49If we had a Motion Menu button, we'd check that, but we don't. So, we'll click
00:54OK, and there's that.
00:56And let's go ahead a little bit, and I'm going to make one here, because
01:01that's my niece.
01:02So, we'll go menu marker, and we'll put braces, and we're going to click OK.
01:10Let's go ahead a little bit, and right here I'm going to do my interview.
01:15So, I'm going to type in "Alina Interview."
01:19Click OK and let's go through that.
01:28And right here I'm going to type in "Performance."
01:32So, we'll set another menu marker there, and this is the performance.
01:37There we go, and that's it.
01:40We're going to leave everything else alone.
01:42So, now we've got all my menu markers and I can make my DVD.
01:45So, I can go to Share and now I can just click on Burn DVD to Disc.
01:51So, we'll click on that. And I can literally just go click on my DVD.
01:56I've got a disk in.
01:57It's telling me it's ready.
01:58I would change the name here to The Dance, and I can just click Burn and it'll
02:05make a DVD that I can just stick into a DVD player and it'll play automatically.
02:10But I did add chapter markers and I do want to see those,
02:14s, let's add a menu.
02:17And so before we burn, let's go into Disc Menus.
02:21This is where you'd find all of your premade content, all your templates to make
02:25DVD menus and submenus.
02:27We only have one currently installed, but Elements 10 ships with a lot of menus.
02:32It's on an extra content disc;
02:34you can also download it from adobe.com and add more content here.
02:38So, we're going to use this one, and I'm going to click Apply, and now here
02:43are our menus.
02:44I'm going to need to change the movie title.
02:46I'm going to leave Play and Scenes alone, and I'm going to add something right here.
02:52So, I'm going to go in this button here and choose Browse, and we'll pick a nice
02:57dancing picture here.
02:59We'll choose OK and there's my dancing photo. It looks great. And then right
03:05above it is my text item.
03:07Let's double-click on this.
03:10The Dance, we'll call it. Click OK and I'm going to leave the rest alone.
03:16So, let's test this out.
03:17Let's choose Preview right here.
03:20Here's our photo.
03:21I can press play, but let's go to the Scene area first.
03:24We'll check out the scenes, and here they are: Intro, Braces, Alina
03:28Interview, Performances.
03:30So, I can click on her interview--
03:32(Alina: What I think is great about EDN is that we're providing students with an opportunity.)
03:38--and I can exit. I can also just choose Auto-play to see the whole thing, and we're good to go.
03:43So, now we're able to apply this and use it on our DVD menu.
03:47So, let's go back to Share and The Dance and click on Burn, and there we go.
03:59So creating the DVD in Elements 10 is quick to do.
04:02The process actually takes a little time when you're actually burning the DVD though.
04:07Be prepared to wait for a few moments.
04:10So, Elements 10 is a powerful program that allows you to export to DVD formats
04:15to view on any DVD player.
Collapse this transcript
Creating Blu-ray Discs, DVDs, and web DVDs
00:00So we just created a DVD that we can show all of our friends, but Adobe Premiere
00:04Elements also gives you another option, and that is to export a web DVD.
00:10And let me show you how that works.
00:11So here's our Timeline.
00:13One thing we're not going to do is add any markers;
00:16we're going to see what happens if we don't do that, and we're not going to add a menu.
00:19So let's take a look. We'll click on Share.
00:23The first item here says Build web DVD for viewing online or on a PC, so
00:28let's take a look.
00:30So we get this menu that comes up that says we're missing the Disc menu and we
00:34are required to have one.
00:36So we're going to have to click OK.
00:39And that's going to take us back into our Disc Menu selection area.
00:43We would have more templates here.
00:44We could easily just pick and choose, but we've got one, so we're going to use
00:47this one. And we'll just drag it in.
00:49Now we've got another menu that says we're missing our menu markers.
00:55And what are we going to do?
00:56Do we want them to create it automatically?
00:57So let's say Yes on this one. And here's another menu that tells us do we
01:02want to set them at each scene, every so many minutes, and how many total
01:06markers do we want?
01:08It could literally do hundreds of markers if you leave it at every scene,
01:12so I'm going to say Total Markers I want maybe 4, and then we'll press OK.
01:19So we're back to this screen again, which you should be familiar with, and we're
01:22going to Browse and choose our photo again, and then we're going to preview it.
01:28But before, take a look here. We have all these menu buttons.
01:32If I double-click on one, it has no name here, so we may not want to use this one.
01:38But what's cool is we can actually drag this.
01:40So I can bring them back to the way I wanted them before.
01:43So I can go here, double-click, and choose Intro.
01:48I can go back here, move my playhead.
01:53We'll go out of this for one second and come back after.
01:57And we'll go to our playhead here, and we'll go move that marker over and
02:02double-click, and we'll type in "Braces."
02:06We'll move this one over, type in "Interview."
02:13And the last marker actually went on the Performance, so that was good.
02:173 out of 4 were not, and 1 was good.
02:20We'll take that.
02:21We'll just type in Performance and we'll click OK, and then we'll go back into
02:28that Disc Menus and let's just test it first. Preview.
02:32We need to change the movie title.
02:34Here are our scenes once again: Intro, Braces, Interview, and Performance. And I
02:41need to go change the menu title,
02:43so we'll exit out of here and we'll go and choose Title, double-click on it, and
02:49this is called The Dance. Click OK.
02:53Let's preview it one more time, and there it is.
02:56If I press play, it automatically plays.
03:04So this looks great, so I'm done with this.
03:06I'm going to go back to Share, and we're going to build our web DVD.
03:11So do I want to save this into a folder on a computer or upload it
03:14to photoshop.com?
03:16So I don't have a membership to photoshop.com.
03:19I'm going to save it onto my folder, and I'll show you what happens after that.
03:23Do I want it to be high definition or standard def?
03:26I'm just going to choose Standard Def High Quality on this one, and I'm going to
03:31call this DanceWeb so I can differentiate, and we're going to put it on the
03:36folder on the desktop.
03:38So I'm going to type in web, Choose, and we're ready to go.
03:44Let's press Build.
03:49Okay, so our build is completed.
03:51Let's take a look at what it looks like.
03:53We can actually click on the link here.
03:55(clip playing)
04:01I'm going to mute that out for a second, but this is an HTML file that includes
04:06this disc menu, and I go to Scenes and there it is as well.
04:12So now one thing to know is that once you have your web DVD ready, we need to
04:17upload certain files to the Internet, to your own domain name or your own
04:21server, to make them really work, so let's see where they are.
04:25So I'm going to minimize Premiere, and we're going to go into this folder we made
04:30called web, and let's just see what's inside.
04:32So we've got DanceWeb, and there are all these files.
04:37Here are all of our movie chapters, here's the HTML file that plays the web DVD,
04:44and here's our scene menus.
04:46And if I double-click on this, that's going to open up our browser.
04:50We're going to need this file to play this.
04:55We can change this file name, because everything is going to connect;
04:59don't worry about that.
05:00But you want this to be on maybe, it's davidbasulto.com/playthedanceweb or
05:06whatever I decide to call it.
05:08So all those files need to be up there.
05:10It needs to be in a direct path.
05:11If you're uploading the folder we have called DanceWeb--and let's just take a
05:15look at that--this DanceWeb folder,
05:18that's absolutely fine as well.
05:19So we can do DanceWeb folder, forward slash, whatever we name this, and we can
05:24absolutely just leave it alone if you'd like to, just to play it safe.
05:28And it'll play online and everyone will be able to get to it.
05:31So Premiere Elements allows you to share this as a web DVD, but remember, you do
05:36need to have a server or some kind of web hosting to play it online.
05:40You can also just copy this whole folder, drag it into another computer or your
05:45laptop if you want to take it with you, and it'll play off of that as well.

11. Exporting and Sharing Movies
Sharing your project to YouTube
00:00So you just edited your film and you want to get it out there on the web and
00:04show everybody your awesome creation.
00:06So how do we do that in Elements 10?
00:09Let's go over here to the Share button, and we've already covered disc DVDs, and
00:15we're going to go into the next menu, which is Online.
00:18And when I go here, I've got some choices.
00:21I can go to photoshop.com, if you remember, Facebook, and YouTube, and lastly
00:28there is Podbean, if this is a podcast you are making.
00:31So we are going to go to YouTube, because actually, I can put this up on YouTube
00:36and make sure that it shares on a Facebook, so I can kill two birds with one
00:40stone if I would like.
00:41And within the presets here, you have several different presets you can choose from.
00:46Since this is just standard- definition footage, I really don't need High
00:50Definition, because it's not going to scale up very well.
00:54So I am just going to keep it on Flash Video for YouTube.
00:58And I want to click Share Work Bar Area Only, and what is the work bar?
01:02We go back into our Timeline.
01:05This gray bar is the work bar.
01:08If I pulled it out here, I'm adding black video;
01:12there is nothing at there, because that's the work area.
01:16So you want to make sure your work area is exactly to the end of your video, and
01:21we are going to share that work bar only, and we are going to press Next.
01:26And now I have got to sign in. And I am going to call this The Dance and
01:34describe it, Santa Barbara's Awesome Dance Company, and Tags.
01:45I am also going to put dance, and I want to add Santa Barbara.
01:52And that's a nonprofit, so yeah, I am going to leave it at Nonprofit, but I
01:56can choose other things here if I would like to, so we will leave that alone,
02:00and choose Next.
02:02And do I want the public to view this?
02:04Well, yes, because I actually want to get some publicity for them, and this is
02:08copyrighted material.
02:09There are all these different disclaimers, but if you're a member of YouTube,
02:12it's pretty standard.
02:14And we will click Share, and now we'll see it being rendered and uploaded.
02:20So our share is complete, our video has been uploaded, and you can see here,
02:23there's the address.
02:24We can click on that and go see it, and we can go back and make some more videos.
02:30So as you see in Elements 10, you can easily share your creations with the world.
Collapse this transcript
Sharing your project to a video file
00:00Okay, so we've shared with the world on YouTube and now we want to make a file
00:04that we can put on our computer. Maybe we're going to take our laptop somewhere.
00:08We want to show everybody our wonderful video here. So let's take a look at
00:12how to do that.
00:14So once again, we were in the Share--and let me just go back a second--and we chose
00:17Computer. And let's look at our different choices here. So we've got Flash Video
00:23that we can export as as an F4V file, FLV as well, and there are some web design
00:30programs out there that you may be using, and you can just drag on this file into
00:34that, so they can play on your web site.
00:37MPEG is great to keep a hard-drive copy of, because you might want to make more
00:42DVD later, and you don't have to re-render.
00:43You can just drag that onto a DVD- burning program and create DVDs.
00:49AVCHD, this is a new addition to Elements 10, and it's a great archiving format.
00:54It's a high-definition format, and there are some great presents here.
00:57Let's take a look.
01:00We can not only just go into the M2T, which is their format, but there is a
01:04MPEG4, which is a really great codec.
01:07If you have TiVo at home, you can make a TiVo NTSC, which is a North American
01:11Standard or you can make a high- definition version. And once again, here's
01:16Vimeo HD and YouTube HD, and Vimeo is a video sharing site on the web that's
01:21really popular and really has a great user interface as well, so we have all these options.
01:27Let's go a little further.
01:30The next is QuickTime, so if you want to make a QuickTime file for our hard
01:34drive just to keep it there and play whenever.
01:36Default is NTSC, DV. It's got 16:9 and other views.
01:41You can also go into advanced here, if you want to get really technical, and
01:46maybe let's make it widescreen, 16:9. And then I can choose a different codec so
01:51if you're familiar with them. I'm not going to go over all of the codecs, but
01:55there is quite a bit.
01:56The animation, for example, is a mastering codec and your file sizes will
02:00be ginormous.
02:01So if you are going to go in here and play around, start with like an H.264
02:06and work your way around from there.
02:07You can also change audio, so there is lot of options here to customize your
02:12work. And let see what's next.
02:18Image file here, so if you had a line of image sequences, different photos, you
02:22wanted to make an image sequence, you can just use those to export, and it gives
02:27you a couple of presets for that as well. And then audio, let's say you just
02:30want the audio only. Maybe you want people to hear you're doing some kind of
02:34documentary and the audio would be great to listen to on your iPhone or
02:39something on the way to work, so you can export that right there. And here are
02:43the different presets.
02:45I would stick with the MP3 or the AIFF for compatibility. And then of course,
02:50you change your file name and where you're going to save it.
02:52So let's go back and find something we want to save. I want to go make an AVCHD.
02:56I'm going to choose the Vimeo HD format.
03:00I think it's a pretty popular and standard format that we can save and
03:04archive things in.
03:05It renders out really smooth file, and the file size is pretty contained as
03:09well, so let's keep that.
03:10I could also upload it later on
03:12if I want to go up to a file sharing site, and it's already pre-rendered,
03:15so let's take a look.
03:16So I'm going to change this to thedance, and we'll just save this on the desktop.
03:26And I'm going to do, once again, the WorkArea Bar Only. And I could go into the
03:31Advanced settings and change things here, but by the default this look pretty
03:35good. And we'll press Save, and now it's rendering it out.
03:42So as you can see, we've successfully saved, so let's take a look at our
03:46awesome video render.
03:47So I'm going to minimize Elements 10 by clicking this button right here, and
03:52here it is on the desktop.
03:54Let's see what it looks like.
03:55I'll double-click on it, and there it is in high-definition glory, and
04:00we'll press play.
04:01(clip playing)
04:31So there we go. It looked great!
04:33Let's go back and get Premiere back up here. And that's all you need to do to
04:37save your movie out to a file that you can access later.
Collapse this transcript
Sharing your project to a mobile device
00:00So we've shared our video online using YouTube.
00:03So now we're going to export our movie into a mobile phone or mobile device,
00:07such as an iPad. So let's take a look at how we do that.
00:10In the share area, we're going to click on Mobile Phone and Players. And
00:14we've got some different options here, so the first one is the Apple iPad, iPhone, iPod.
00:19We can go to the next one, which is Audio Podcast.
00:23We have Sony PSP, which is the PlayStation Portable, and we have Mobile Phone,
00:29which might be like a Nokia phone or something.
00:32So we're going to send it out to the iPad, so I'm going to select that one and
00:37choose File Presets here, and take a look at what we have.
00:40So I don't think this is too big of a file, so I am going to choose Apple's iPad
00:45Widescreen High Quality, and we'll keep that. And I'm going to name this
00:48thedance, and then I'm going to do _iPadHQ, so I know exactly what it is.
00:56I am going to go back to the Browse button and put it on my Desktop. And then of
01:03course I am going to do the Share Work Area Only, but I'm not going to really
01:06go into Advanced, because I don't need to mess around with any of this right now,
01:09although I do see that my file size is only 10 megabytes, so that's great. And
01:14we're just going to click Save, and it's going to render it out.
01:17So there you have it, Save Complete. Our video has been successfully saved. Once
01:23again let's go up here and minimize this, and here it is on the desktop, and we
01:28just drag into our iPad or into iTunes to put it on our iPad, and we're good to go.
01:32So as you can see, Elements 10 has a lot of great sharing options, and iPad is
01:38one of them.
