IntroductionWelcome| 00:04 | Welcome to Premiere Elements 10
Essential Training. I'm Dave Basulto.
| | 00:07 | In this course we'll show you how to
create quick professional-looking movies
| | 00:11 | from your own raw video footage and graphics.
| | 00:14 | I'll show you how to connect your camera
or hard drive to import your raw footage.
| | 00:19 | Then we'll make professional-
looking edits and transitions.
| | 00:22 | We'll then add effects and color
corrections that will really make your movies pop.
| | 00:27 | I'll also show you the importance of
fixing audio problems, and easy ways to do it.
| | 00:32 | I'll then show you how to export to
multiple formats, such as the web, iPods,
| | 00:37 | DVD, and even Blu-ray.
| | 00:39 | Lastly, I'll show you how to use your own
personal URL to share your videos with the world.
| | 00:45 | In this course we'll show you the
basics and more to get you going with video
| | 00:49 | editing in Premiere Elements 10.

| How to use the exercise files| 00:00 | If you're a Premium member of the
lynda.com Online Training Library or if you're
| | 00:05 | watching this tutorial on a DVD-ROM, you
have access to the exercise files to use
| | 00:10 | throughout this title.
| | 00:11 | So I've downloaded the exercise
files onto my Desktop, and I'm going to
| | 00:15 | double-click them. And here they're
laid out by chapter, so you see Chapters 1
| | 00:20 | through 11, inside of the chapter
there are the Premiere Elements files.
| | 00:25 | In the assets folder are all the
assets that we're going to be using.
| | 00:28 | We'll just take a quick look.
| | 00:29 | Here's all of our assets, and assets are
the video files, music, and photos that
| | 00:37 | we're going to be using throughout this course.
| | 00:39 | So, I've showed you where the assets are,
but really all you need to go and do
| | 00:43 | is open the project files, click
on the Premiere Elements project, and
| | 00:47 | double-click it to open.
| | 00:51 | Premiere Elements will launch.
| | 00:53 | Now, you might have this little dialog box
that tells you Where is this broll atmosphere?
| | 01:00 | So what's this asking you to
do is to re-link the footage.
| | 01:04 | Because I built these projects on my
computer and they transferred to another
| | 01:08 | computer, such as yours, the links
have been broken, but that's easy to fix.
| | 01:12 | Let's go into the assets here, and we're
looking for broll_sb_atmosphere_94, and
| | 01:18 | let's find that. And we'll give
ourselves a little bit of room here. And here it
| | 01:24 | is, broll_sb_atmosphere_94.
| | 01:28 | So then just click Open and your
Elements file has opened, and everything is
| | 01:34 | ready to go for you to
learn Adobe Premiere Elements.
| | 01:37 | So because we've found the exact file
that it needed, Elements is smart enough
| | 01:40 | to go and find the rest of the
footage being used in this project. And once
| | 01:45 | again, because I made this on my computer
and it's now onto another computer, the
| | 01:49 | links have been broken and you're
going to have to reconnect the footage for
| | 01:52 | every Premiere Elements project,
but that is not a pain. Don't worry.
| | 01:56 | If you're a Monthly subscriber or an
Annual subscriber to lynda.com, you
| | 02:00 | don't have access to the exercise
files, but you can follow along from
| | 02:04 | scratch using your own assets. Ready?
| | 02:07 | Let's get started.

1. What is Premiere ElementsUnderstanding the interface| 00:00 | Premiere Elements has a very intuitive user
interface that includes three main panels.
| | 00:05 | Let's take a look at them now.
| | 00:07 | On the top left here, we have
what's called the Monitor panel.
| | 00:10 | This is where we're going to see all
of the footage that we're working with.
| | 00:14 | The Monitor panel has your same
controls as you would see in a DVD player or a
| | 00:18 | VCR, your play/pause button, rewind, step back.
| | 00:23 | Right here, this number is
where you are in your project.
| | 00:27 | This little icon is called the Current
Time Indicator, and you need to remember
| | 00:33 | that because we're going to be using
that quite often when we shuttle back and
| | 00:37 | forth in our projects.
| | 00:39 | Speaking of shuttle, this is a little
shuttle, which lets you scan through your
| | 00:44 | project at a slow or a fevered pace.
(music playing)
| | 00:49 | Next to it, you'll see the Split Clip
tool, the Text tool, and the Freeze Frame.
| | 00:54 | Don't worry about those.
| | 00:55 | We're going to talk about
them in depth in another video.
| | 00:58 | Now, below is the Timeline or
Sceneline, and this is actually where you're
| | 01:04 | building your projects
that you can see in the monitor.
| | 01:09 | These boxes here in the Sceneline are
just clips that you decided to bring in
| | 01:14 | from footage that you have in your project,
and we'll talk about this Task panel later.
| | 01:21 | These little boxes in the
Sceneline are what are called transitions.
| | 01:26 | So, you're transitioning from this
clip to the dance clip on the right.
| | 01:32 | This is the transition, and you've
probably seen that in movies where it goes
| | 01:36 | from one scene to the next and there is a
little dissolve or some kind of a flip or anything.
| | 01:43 | You can put a lot of different things
in here, and there are some great options.
| | 01:47 | Now the Sceneline has some nice tools
here as well: the Pan and Zoom tool, which
| | 01:52 | allows you to move your clips and we're
actually going to do a complete video on
| | 01:57 | this because it's a new tool,
| | 01:58 | the Smart Trim mode, Motion Tracking,
Properties, Audio tools, and Markers.
| | 02:05 | We're going to get in to all
those in depth in a later video.
| | 02:09 | Now, we have our video laid out here.
| | 02:11 | This is a video that I edited called
"The Dance" and I just want you to know
| | 02:15 | that, in the Timeline, which is where
I like to work, it is the exact same
| | 02:20 | clips as the Sceneline.
| | 02:23 | So, whichever version that you'd like
to work in is fine because it's going
| | 02:27 | to be on either side.
| | 02:29 | In the Timeline now we don't have
the Current Time Indicator up here.
| | 02:33 | We have it now down here.
| | 02:36 | I can click and drag and scrub across
to see where I want to be, and this shows
| | 02:43 | me the current time here.
| | 02:45 | I'm at 12 seconds and 20 frames.
| | 02:47 | I'm at 23 seconds and 28 frames,
so I can be really exact using this.
| | 02:53 | Now, the Timeline has some very different tools.
| | 02:56 | It has the Selection tool. That lets you
select different clips, and as you see
| | 03:01 | if I click on them they are
highlighting, which means they are active.
| | 03:08 | I can also click and marquee
around them and select them all.
| | 03:13 | To deselect, just simply go off onto the side.
| | 03:16 | Next to it is the Time Stretch tool, so
if you want to speed things up or slow
| | 03:20 | them down, you have that ability. And then the
rest of the tools are the same as the Sceneline.
| | 03:26 | One last thing in the Timeline
is the zoom in and zoom out tool.
| | 03:31 | So you see how there might not be enough
room to work with here, for some reason.
| | 03:35 | You can just click and drag
it out and it spaces it out.
| | 03:39 | It does nothing to their actual time.
| | 03:42 | It just gives you more space to work
with. And if you have a really big project,
| | 03:46 | you can zoom it in and it
turns out to be little. Okay.
| | 03:51 | Also here, let's take a look at this.
| | 03:53 | That's a little different.
| | 03:55 | The Sceneline just has your video
track here, your narration track, so if you
| | 04:00 | want to do some narration.
| | 04:02 | For example, if I was narrating this,
I might talk about we're high on the
| | 04:06 | building looking down. And then
underneath that is your soundtrack, so what
| | 04:12 | music are you putting underneath that?
| | 04:14 | Now, we're going to talk
about those in another video.
| | 04:17 | In the Timeline you have
video tracks and audio tracks.
| | 04:22 | Elements comes with a default of three audio
and three video tracks, which are right here.
| | 04:29 | You can click on them and delete them
if you want, because they are empty,
| | 04:33 | give you more space.
| | 04:35 | You want your Video 1 layer is basically
going to be your background or bottom layer.
| | 04:40 | So if you get into stacking video
clips on top of each other, as we do in
| | 04:44 | compositing later on, you need to
know that Video 1 will always be the first
| | 04:49 | one in the back. Then on top
of that would be 2 and then 3.
| | 04:53 | Scrolling down here, we have our
narration track and our soundtrack, and they
| | 05:00 | have down collapsible arrows.
| | 05:03 | Also, if I go between the three panels,
there is a little icon that's got two
| | 05:10 | lines and two arrows up and down.
That allows me to drag and resize the
| | 05:17 | Elements interface.
| | 05:19 | So if you need more real
estate, it allows you to do that.
| | 05:21 | Now, let's go up to the Task panel.
| | 05:24 | The Task panel is where you're going
to import your media, and by media I'm
| | 05:30 | talking about your raw footage from
your flip camera, your DSLR, an MP3
| | 05:35 | player, a DVD that you're trying to get
footage from, your hard drive, etcetera.
| | 05:41 | All of that's going to be imported into
the Project panel, so that you can use
| | 05:45 | it to create clips, which will go into
the Sceneline or Timeline, which will
| | 05:51 | then be viewed into the
viewer, the Monitor window here.
| | 05:54 | So within the Project panel you have
icons here that allow you to look at the
| | 05:58 | List view or the Icon view.
| | 06:01 | If you're ever in a folder and you
want to come out, you can go up one level.
| | 06:05 | This creates a new folder,
so I have a new folder there.
| | 06:08 | I can right-click and cut it.
| | 06:11 | This lets you to create a new item.
| | 06:13 | We'll discuss all the new items later.
And this is your Clear or Delete.
| | 06:18 | So, it also has an Edit panel where
you can add effects, transitions, titles,
| | 06:22 | themes, and even clip art.
| | 06:24 | Goes into Disc menus here, if you're
creating DVD templates. And lastly you can share.
| | 06:30 | It's got a lot of sharing options.
| | 06:32 | So, if you went and edited a great
video and you wanted to get it up on YouTube
| | 06:36 | immediately, for example,
that's available right there.
| | 06:39 | So once you learn the basics of the
three panels, editing is going to be
| | 06:43 | as simple as 1, 2, 3.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| An overview of the editing workflow| 00:00 | Elements 10 is such a
fun and intuitive editor to use.
| | 00:04 | Before we dive into specific features,
let me walk you through a finished
| | 00:08 | project to give you an overview.
| | 00:10 | So in this movie I edited an intro for
a dance company, and it appears here in
| | 00:16 | the Sceneline or the Timeline. And I
can switch back and forth between the two.
| | 00:21 | So let's play this really quickly.
(video playing)
| | 00:35 | So how did I create this?
| | 00:37 | Well, first I had to import footage by
going File > Get Media from, and then
| | 00:45 | choose one of the options here.
| | 00:47 | Now, Elements comes with an Organizer,
which we'll look at in another movie.
| | 00:51 | It also gives you several different
video cameras, flips, your digital still
| | 00:56 | camera, which could be your DSLRs, even
webcams, and lastly, you can choose Files
| | 01:02 | and Folders, and we're going to
go over all this in another movie.
| | 01:06 | You can also just
double-click here in the Project panel.
| | 01:11 | It'll bring in the Add Media dialog box,
and you can bring in footage that way.
| | 01:15 | Once the footage is imported,
I like to create my own folders to keep
| | 01:19 | everything nice and tidy.
| | 01:20 | As you see here, I've got footage in
one, music in another, and I do this by
| | 01:25 | clicking on the new folder
icon and then renaming it.
| | 01:30 | I can then double-click on the folder
that has the footage and then choose a
| | 01:36 | piece of footage that I
want to create my edit to.
| | 01:39 | So, I can double-click on the footage,
and now I can start creating what
| | 01:42 | are called in and out points where
I want of video to begin and where I
| | 01:47 | want the video clip to end.
| | 01:49 | Obviously, I don't want
this entire amount of video.
| | 01:52 | It's over four minutes long.
| | 01:54 | So, I might just want to start at somewhere
around here. And Elements is really simple.
| | 01:59 | It lets you know down below here
where to set in and out points.
| | 02:02 | So I'll just click Set In.
| | 02:04 | I can also press the letter I if
you see I next to it and it makes a
| | 02:07 | little marker there.
| | 02:09 | I'll go ahead in time, maybe just to there
and I'll press O or click the Set Out point.
| | 02:17 | Now, I've got a clip that I can use to
drag into my Timeline, and we're going to
| | 02:21 | go over all that in another movie.
| | 02:24 | Next, I added transitions. As you can
see down here, if I scroll over, we go from
| | 02:29 | the dance video and we cross-
dissolve into the other one.
| | 02:34 | I'm going to show you how we add
transitions to the Timeline to make
| | 02:39 | seamless edits look great.
| | 02:40 | Next, I added a music track down below
in the Soundtrack area, and you can see
| | 02:46 | in this area here where my subject
starts to talk, I actually made what are
| | 02:51 | called keyframes to create a lower
volume here, so that she could talk and we
| | 02:57 | can hear her. And Elements actually does that
for you, and we'll look at that in another video.
| | 03:02 | I also added a title here, The Dance,
which we use the titling application
| | 03:08 | here within Elements.
| | 03:10 | Very simple to use, and I'll
show that in our title movie.
| | 03:13 | You can also add a title effect, and if you
see here if I scroll over, we faded into that.
| | 03:21 | Now, when I'm done I can click up here
and choose Share and Elements lets me
| | 03:26 | send this out to my friends on
Facebook pretty much automatically.
| | 03:30 | If I click on Online, Upload to video
sharing web sites, it's looking for its
| | 03:36 | presets. And here I've an option to send
it to Photoshop.com, Facebook, and YouTube,
| | 03:42 | and we're going to go over all
these presents in another movie.
| | 03:45 | There's also--if you're a podcaster
you can go to what's called Podbean, and
| | 03:50 | we'll talk about that.
| | 03:50 | It's a podcasting hosting service.
| | 03:53 | By allowing you to export your finished
product to video sharing sites such as
| | 03:58 | YouTube or podcast hosting Podbean,
Facebook and Photoshop.com, Elements really
| | 04:05 | gives you the power to get your
masterpieces out and online quickly.
| | 04:09 | So that's the overview of the Premiere
Elements 10 workflow, and yes, Premiere
| | 04:14 | Elements really is this easy.
| | 04:16 | Now, I sped through this,
| | 04:18 | so in this course I'm going to take
you step by step and empower you to use
| | 04:22 | Adobe Premiere Elements 10 to
create your own masterpieces.

2. Starting Your First Elements ProjectCreating a new project| 00:00 | So let's launch Premiere Elements 10.
| | 00:02 | I'll go down here and click on
Elements. It'll launch.
| | 00:08 | If for some reason you don't see this
menu, you can always go up here into the
| | 00:11 | little house, click on it, and it will
launch the Welcome menu. So let's go in
| | 00:15 | and create a new project.
| | 00:18 | So our first dialog box says New
Project, and we're going to call it something
| | 00:21 | unique, so I'm going to say My Big Movie.
| | 00:27 | And next I want to save this
somewhere, so we're going to browse.
| | 00:30 | I'm going to go onto my Desktop.
Create a new folder. So why am I doing this?
| | 00:36 | Because I want to have all of my
assets, which are my movies, my photos, any
| | 00:42 | music, all my Premiere Elements files,
| | 00:44 | I want them all in one location so that
later I can take that whole folder and
| | 00:50 | if I want to move it to another
computer or to a hard drive or whatever, I can
| | 00:54 | do that all with one quick drag.
| | 00:56 | I am going to name this My Big Movie
so I can search and find it, and we're
| | 01:02 | going to press Create and Choose.
| | 01:06 | Next, I want to change my setting.
| | 01:07 | So let's take a look at that dialog box.
| | 01:10 | So you're going to see two folders,
one says NTSC, which is the North American
| | 01:15 | Standard and PAL, which is in Europe, and
there's differences between the two, but
| | 01:21 | just note if you're in Europe you're
going to want to use PAL, if you're in the
| | 01:24 | United States or North
America, you want to use NTSC.
| | 01:28 | So we'll use the dropdown menu here,
and inside here are different formats.
| | 01:32 | So AVCHD, which is new to
Elements 10, is more of a Sony format.
| | 01:38 | It's a high-definition format.
| | 01:39 | It's fantastic. We have DSLR footage which could be
your Canon 7D or 60D, DV footage, flip
| | 01:47 | cameras, if you have anything on a
hard disk already or from a Flash memory
| | 01:52 | camcorder and HDV footage.
| | 01:55 | So however you shot your footage,
you need to find a preset that matches
| | 01:58 | your footage the best.
| | 01:59 | For us it's going to be this DV
Widescreen, and we're going to just click
| | 02:03 | on that and choose OK.
| | 02:05 | Premiere Elements 10 offers you several
choices when setting up a new project.
| | 02:10 | Choosing the right settings will
help your projects run smoothly.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Importing media| 00:00 | With your new project ready to go,
it's time to import your media files.
| | 00:04 | First let's click on File > Get Media
from, and in the dialog box you'll see
| | 00:11 | Elements Organizer, which we're going
to discuss in another video; various
| | 00:16 | cameras, which we're going to
discuss in capturing in the next video.
| | 00:21 | So for this lesson if you have files,
video files or audio files, that are on
| | 00:26 | your Desktop or your hard drive,
you'd click Files and Folders. Maybe you
| | 00:30 | captured them already or someone handed
you the videos or you shot them on your
| | 00:35 | webcam, et cetera, although we have
Webcam here, we're going to click here and
| | 00:40 | find them. So Files and Folders.
| | 00:42 | And in the exercise files if you
choose assets, double-click on that. And for
| | 00:48 | this lesson let's just choose
dancing, and we're going to import.
| | 00:53 | And now you may get an Add Media
Failure and you're going to freak out because
| | 00:58 | you think you're doing things wrong.
| | 00:59 | It's just a certain file extension that
Premiere Elements won't accept, but it
| | 01:05 | really is a nonessential file
extension, and it's not going to have any
| | 01:08 | problems with you.
| | 01:10 | It's usually from videos that are
shot with Canon cameras, some AVCHD.
| | 01:16 | These are little files that other
editing programs may need. Premiere Elements
| | 01:20 | does not, so I'll just click OK.
| | 01:23 | So now my assets are in the Project area.
| | 01:26 | I can double-click on them to see them all.
| | 01:29 | I can choose the List view if I want
to look down and see what they are here.
| | 01:34 | I can even show how many times it's
been used, here in the Video Usage, Audio
| | 01:39 | Usage, and then this is an area
for notes that we can look at later.
| | 01:43 | If you want to check your footage, all
you need to do is double-click on it.
| | 01:47 | It'll open up the Preview area and you can play.
| | 01:53 | You can scrub and make sure this is
the correct footage that you want.
| | 02:00 | Premiere Elements 10 allows you to
import multiple formats of video and audio assets.
| | 02:05 | You can mix and match them
and get ready to make your edit.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Capturing media| 00:00 | If you just finished shooting and you
need to capture that footage to make
| | 00:03 | a movie, well Elements 10 has
recovered too, so let's take a look at how we do that.
| | 00:08 | Go up to File > Get Media from, and
then we can choose what we want here.
| | 00:13 | So we're going to choose the Flip, the
AVCHD, Cameras and Phones because that's
| | 00:18 | our DSLR area, so we're going to click on that.
| | 00:21 | And I already have my camera
connected via the USB port, so I'm able to see
| | 00:25 | what's on my camera.
| | 00:27 | And here's all my footage. And you
can see right here it says Canon, so
| | 00:31 | that's my source.
| | 00:32 | If your source isn't showing up,
you can click the Refresh button.
| | 00:35 | If you have a lot of sources, if you
down arrow, you can select which one you want.
| | 00:40 | And by default it automatically puts a
check mark next to every single piece of
| | 00:45 | footage, and what that's going to do
is if you say get media down here, it's
| | 00:49 | going to import them all.
| | 00:50 | So I might not want to do that because
I don't want all the footage. I mean I'm
| | 00:54 | pretty good at shooting, but I
don't think these are all that great.
| | 00:56 | So let me uncheck them.
| | 00:58 | Now I am going to look around for some
stuff, so I kind of like this piece of
| | 01:03 | footage here, and if I double-click it,
it will come into the Preview Monitor
| | 01:07 | and I can press Play.
| | 01:07 | (clip playing)
| | 01:09 | It looks like someone is chasing you.
| | 01:13 | That's kind of cool.
| | 01:15 | We can put it into a horror movie that
I want to make one day, so I'm going to
| | 01:18 | bring that one in.
And let's take a look at this one.
| | 01:23 | (clip playing)
| | 01:27 | Perfect, some more chasing, so I like
that. And I'm just going to go around and
| | 01:31 | grab some I think are going to look good.
| | 01:33 | So we'll take these or this other
highway, this one right here. So I've got six
| | 01:42 | files selected, and I want to
choose a place to put them.
| | 01:46 | So I am going to go over here into my
area here and browse for a place, so let's
| | 01:51 | go to my Desktop/Exercise
Files/assets, make a new folder.
| | 01:56 | I am going to call that DSLR.
| | 01:59 | Make sure you find a good place to put
your DSLR or other footage so that you
| | 02:03 | know that we can get back to it anytime.
| | 02:06 | So I'm saving my footage into a DSLR
folder, into my assets folder, because that's
| | 02:10 | part of my lesson plan here, but you
can add it to your hard drives or in
| | 02:15 | external drives, wherever you feel
comfortable, and it needs to be a place where
| | 02:18 | you can always go back and find it.
| | 02:20 | So let's click on Choose.
| | 02:22 | Now I have some other options here.
| | 02:23 | I can change my file name as a
different custom name or number and type in here
| | 02:28 | what I want, or I can just
leave that alone right there.
| | 02:32 | So I'm just going to leave it at the
default now, whatever the file name is.
| | 02:34 | It's just going to come over
as this, and I'll fix it later.
| | 02:37 | After copying, I can delete originals.
| | 02:39 | Well I don't like to do that, so
I'm going to leave that unchecked.
| | 02:41 | Do I want add it to the Timeline right away?
| | 02:44 | Well, I probably want to do some
trimming, so I'm not going to do that.
| | 02:48 | And lastly, I can create an instant
movie, and what's that? Well, we'll talk about
| | 02:52 | that in depth in another video,
so that's a lot of fun as well.
| | 02:55 | So I'm done, and I'm just
going to click on Get Media.
| | 03:00 | And here we are. We've
got all our media in here.
| | 03:03 | It's looking great, and
now we can get into editing.
| | 03:07 | You can also go up here into the Get
Media tab here, click on that, and here's
| | 03:12 | your same menu as you would see up here.
| | 03:15 | And once again if we click on this one,
we can go back to that Video Importer, so
| | 03:19 | if we ever want to go back to find more footage,
| | 03:22 | it's right here. And we'll cancel that.
| | 03:26 | Now I've imported from my DSLR camera, as
you saw, but some of the other cameras
| | 03:31 | you can do are like DV cameras, and
the interface looks a little different.
| | 03:35 | I don't have one handy right now,
but let me just show you how it works.
| | 03:38 | I'll click on DV Camcorder, and this
brings up a Capture window. So I can
| | 03:43 | actually bring this in as a
capturing the movie, and I would see it here.
| | 03:48 | I would press Capture and it
would create a file onto my project.
| | 03:52 | And I would of course go back and
see where I wanted it, rename it.
| | 03:55 | Do I want it to go to the Timeline, split
the scene so it's a really long videotape?
| | 03:59 | I can do that.
Let's click out of this.
| | 04:03 | Same thing with an HD Camcorder.
| | 04:05 | I can do a similar thing, and we'll pick
which of our capture sources right here.
| | 04:10 | Here's one that the camcorder is like a
DVD Camcorder, or a PC DVD drive, so if
| | 04:15 | you have a DVD in your hard
drive, you can go do that.
| | 04:18 | And of course you can capture from you webcam.
| | 04:20 | So Premiere Elements can capture
video from a multitude of cameras.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Managing media| 00:00 | When you're editing your project you
may have several different types of
| | 00:04 | video footage, several audio files,
Photoshop files, pictures. The list goes on and on.
| | 00:10 | It's highly important to keep all of
that organized, and that's something that I
| | 00:14 | really like to drill home.
| | 00:16 | So in this project file I have my
dancing folder with all the dancing media.
| | 00:20 | If I double-click, you'll see it all in there.
| | 00:22 | But I really want to call this
videos or video assets or whatever you
| | 00:27 | feel comfortable with.
| | 00:28 | So I'm going to click here on the New
Folder icon, and I'm just going to call
| | 00:32 | this videos, because I may also
have audio files or Photoshop files, et
| | 00:37 | cetera, as I discussed.
| | 00:38 | So now that I've got my video file, I'm
just going to click on this and drag it
| | 00:42 | in. And now it's all in there, so I
click on the List view here and do the
| | 00:48 | down arrow, and once
again here are all my files.
| | 00:53 | And something that I should talk about
briefly is that when you see this icon
| | 00:56 | here and click and hold, you
can drag Premiere to your liking,
| | 01:02 | just to give you a little
more room to see what you're doing.
| | 01:08 | So here's all my footage, neatly
tucked away in a hierarchy that I can
| | 01:12 | find later on.
| | 01:13 | And anytime I want to add a new folder,
for example if I'm here and I have this
| | 01:19 | selected and I click a new folder,
| | 01:21 | it's going to make a folder within that
dancing folder. So this folder may say
| | 01:26 | Selects, which are selected footage
that I'm going to use out of this folder.
| | 01:33 | I can also go back to the video folder
itself, and click on the new folder icon.
| | 01:38 | And this folder I might call b roll,
which is extra footage that I just shot
| | 01:43 | randomly that I want to put into my video.
| | 01:46 | So now I've got my video folder
with my dancing footage and my b roll.
| | 01:52 | So now I can really look and
find the exact footage that I want.
| | 01:57 | Now since this b roll folder is empty,
if I go back into my Icon view and
| | 02:02 | double-click and see my b roll, as you
can see, there is no videos there. So all
| | 02:06 | I need to do is double-click in there,
and let's just say, for example, I went
| | 02:10 | into my Intro folder and picked
this nice railing, and now there it is.
| | 02:16 | So now let's go back into the List view.
| | 02:18 | We can choose this icon here to
go up a level, and there it is.
| | 02:24 | So you create all these folders in
advance and then add footage to them later
| | 02:28 | on; it's not a problem.
| | 02:30 | Now in the following movies I'm going
to have this hierarchy structured in my
| | 02:35 | video project file so that you can follow along.
| | 02:38 | Keeping all of your video
elements in manageable order is vital in
| | 02:42 | Premiere Elements 10.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Missing media and correctly saving projects| 00:00 | So I'm going to start Premiere
Elements right now and work on a file that I
| | 00:03 | edited earlier, but what if I go into
my exercise files and you know what, I
| | 00:09 | decide that I wanted to move a
piece of footage such as this one into a
| | 00:13 | different folder. Call this
oh no. Drag it in there.
| | 00:21 | So that's not part of the
same hierarchy as it was before.
| | 00:25 | Now let's launch Premiere Elements.
| | 00:28 | So Premiere Elements is launched.
| | 00:29 | I am going to go up here and
choose File > Open Project.
| | 00:32 | I'm going to my Chapter 02 folder and
choose Missing and press Choose and it's
| | 00:39 | loading my project. Now I've got
this nasty thing that says, Where is the
| | 00:44 | File broll verge_bcam_01.mp4?
| | 00:48 | Well, I know that's in here,
Premiere doesn't, so this is what is known
| | 00:52 | as missing media.
| | 00:55 | Anytime you move, or change the name of,
or delete a file from a project after the
| | 01:01 | last save, Elements is going
to put up a pop-up like this
| | 01:05 | that says, Where is the footage?
and I can either skip for now,
| | 01:09 | I can offline it, or I can go in
here and reconnect the footage. So
| | 01:13 | I'll double-click.
| | 01:14 | It's looking for this footage, and I'm
going to press Open. And this Install Full
| | 01:18 | Content comes up. Just keep clicking No
our install it, and now Elements found it
| | 01:23 | and we're good to go.
| | 01:24 | I'm ready to edit. Everything is
looking good. But I could have also skipped
| | 01:28 | that process, and let me show you what
happens then. Let's restart Elements.
| | 01:33 | So you might have notice that I didn't
save the project before I quit Elements,
| | 01:42 | so we're probably going
to have that problem again.
| | 01:44 | So I'm going to Open Project, choose Missing.
| | 01:48 | Oh, it's looking for this footage.
Yeah I know it's there, but I'm going to
| | 01:53 | pretend that it's just
not in this folder anywhere.
| | 01:56 | I don't know where it is.
So I'm going to choose Skip.
| | 02:01 | And now if I go to the end of my movie,
I've got this really strange, some type of
| | 02:07 | Asian writing and Spanish, and where's
my media? But that's okay because I am
| | 02:12 | going to go up here in my footage area
and Elements will show you thumbnails.
| | 02:17 | And this thumbnail is a red and a green
arrow going in opposite directions, the
| | 02:22 | yin in the yang showing me that I've
got one clip being used but it's offline.
| | 02:27 | So what I can do is right-
click and choose Replace Footage.
| | 02:33 | Now I can go into my oh no folder,
find that piece of footage, click Open.
| | 02:38 | It reconnects it, and it's
reconnected in the Timeline so everything's just lovely.
| | 02:44 | But anytime that you move, change, or
rename footage, you're going to have to deal
| | 02:49 | with this, so I highly recommend
always keeping your folder with your footage
| | 02:53 | intact. Don't change
names and don't move footage.

3. Adding, Arranging, and Deleting ClipsSceneline or Timeline?| 00:00 | Adobe Premiere Elements 10 has two
ways to work on your movie: the Sceneline
| | 00:04 | or the Timeline.
| | 00:06 | Let's take a look at the differences.
| | 00:07 | So here's our project. Our monitor
view is showing what I have in the Sceneline.
| | 00:12 | The Sceneline is terrific if
you're looking for a fast at it you know
| | 00:16 | exactly that you just want the four
clips of your mom's birthday party and
| | 00:20 | they are in four different clips
right here, for example, and you just want
| | 00:24 | to click and drag them into the area
here that says Drag next clip here. And
| | 00:28 | you can just drag.
| | 00:29 | Let's find a different clip. And you
want to add some simple transitions here.
| | 00:38 | We're going to do a dissolve this one,
Cube Spin, okay, and that's it, and you're
| | 00:45 | ready to go. You want to render this
out, set it up on YouTube to show all
| | 00:49 | the family back east, because they
haven't seen mom in long time, and that's
| | 00:52 | it, you're ready to go. The Timeline, however, lets
you have a lot more control.
| | 00:57 | It lets you layer videos. So, for
example, you wanted to grab some other
| | 01:02 | footage and put it on top of this video.
| | 01:05 | So maybe I want to go back up and
grab a photo and just layer this here
| | 01:10 | for some reason.
| | 01:19 | I can go here and lower
the opacity a little bit,
| | 01:22 | so we can just barely see that.
| | 01:24 | You can make a lot of other adjustments here.
| | 01:26 | I just lowered the opacity, but
I also have other options here.
| | 01:30 | So there's Motion, all of these Position,
Scale, Rotation. We'll talk about all
| | 01:36 | those in the motion video.
And opacity, like I just showed you.
| | 01:40 | I can create what are called keyframes,
and we'll talk about that. That's more
| | 01:44 | of an animation thing. And one big
thing is--let me just zoom in a little bit here.
| | 01:49 | I can see right off the bat that this
clip right here is pretty long. Maybe I
| | 01:54 | don't need all this, so I can just
look at this clip and say oh my God that
| | 01:58 | too long, I'm going to grab one end of
it and drag it in, and I can change the clip length.
| | 02:03 | If you go into the Sceneline, you don't
have that quick ability. So having the
| | 02:07 | ability to see the relative length at a
glance is a big plus using the Timeline.
| | 02:12 | In the next few videos, we're going
to go over exactly how to import your
| | 02:16 | footage into the Sceneline or the
Timeline, how to change lengths, how to
| | 02:21 | delete clips, how to
rearrange them, and much more.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Adding, arranging, and deleting clips in the Sceneline| 00:00 | You're ready to start making your
movie, so we have got to add some clips
| | 00:03 | into the Sceneline.
| | 00:04 | To add clips to the
Sceneline, it's really simple.
| | 00:07 | Adobe actually tells you drag next clip
here. So let's go into our folder here
| | 00:14 | in Dancing and let's pick some footage.
| | 00:16 | I'll just click and drag.
| | 00:18 | It automatically creates a new one.
| | 00:20 | I'm going to click and drag another one.
| | 00:21 | I am going to scroll down,
click and drag a third one.
| | 00:25 | Now as you can see, this is a pretty
cool thing. It shows you that this piece of
| | 00:30 | media has been used in your project,
and it's been used one time. So this is
| | 00:36 | important where if you want to delete
excess media, you can delete that, but you
| | 00:40 | know it's not been used, and you
won't delete something that's being used.
| | 00:45 | So I have got three pieces of media
here, and I'm going to go up into the
| | 00:48 | monitor and drag to the left. And if you
notice, if I click and drag and let go,
| | 00:56 | it automatically scales out and
provides me with these two handles, which allow
| | 01:02 | me to trim my media, and we'll
talk about that in another video.
| | 01:06 | When I scroll to the right it crosses
the line, it zooms it out again. So it's
| | 01:11 | always telling you where you
are and how you can trim things.
| | 01:16 | Now, if I wanted to delete a clip, I just
need to go over, maybe I don't want the
| | 01:21 | middle one, just go over that clip, press
the Delete key, and it goes away. And I am
| | 01:25 | going to press Command+Z to undo that.
| | 01:28 | Now what if I would like to have
the first clip actually be at the end?
| | 01:32 | Well, that's pretty simple too.
| | 01:34 | I'm just going to click, hold, and drag
and you'll see a little icon that goes
| | 01:40 | over the arrow button, and now it's
highlighting blue right here. So it is
| | 01:45 | showing me I'm moving it there, and
there it is, and we look at the beginning.
| | 01:50 | This one moved up, this one moved up,
and this one took the spot of last one.
| | 01:54 | So adding, arranging, and deleting
clips within the Sceneline is very simple
| | 02:00 | in Premiere Elements.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Adding, arranging, and deleting clips in the Timeline| 00:00 | Adding, arranging, and deleting clips
in the Timeline is very simple as well.
| | 00:04 | Let's go into our Video folder here
and pick some video. And to add it to the
| | 00:09 | Timeline, all I need to do is hold
and drag it and there it goes. There is
| | 00:14 | one and if you notice, and you're in
the List view, you'll see a really cool check mark.
| | 00:19 | Well, it's probably not that cool,
but it says it's been used and how many times.
| | 00:23 | One time. Well, I add it again here.
That's two times. So let's revert, press
| | 00:29 | Command+Z to get out of
that, so back to one time.
| | 00:31 | Take another piece of footage, drag it
here. And you notice when I'm dragging
| | 00:36 | there is a little gap
that I have in between here.
| | 00:39 | Well, I might not want that,
so how do I get rid of it?
| | 00:42 | I right-click. I choose Delete and Close Gap.
| | 00:45 | I'll do that here as well.
| | 00:49 | You can save yourself that hassle by
just getting a clip, dragging it, and then
| | 00:53 | looking for it to snap to the other
clip and let go. So now it's snapped.
| | 00:59 | Now it's easy to add cutaways. So for
example, if we were watching this video
| | 01:05 | here, I might want to talk about
the building. I can drag this piece of
| | 01:09 | footage, put it on video layer 2, and now if
I press play, we see the girls getting
| | 01:19 | ready to dance, and then it goes
into a cutaway of the Dance Arts place.
| | 01:26 | I can also drag some footage and place
it within the clip, inserting it there, and
| | 01:32 | it basically will cut the clip into
two pieces and put that new footage in
| | 01:36 | there. And it does the same thing as the
cutaway we did earlier, but it does cut
| | 01:41 | the clip in two and you may not want
that, because later, on what if you say No,
| | 01:46 | I don't want a cutaway, so you can
just click on it, press the Delete key. But
| | 01:50 | if I press the Delete here, I've got a gap.
| | 01:52 | So unless you're definite that you
want to use that piece of footage, I would
| | 01:56 | recommend not using the insert like that.
| | 01:59 | Deleting clips, like I said, you
just highlight what you want, press the Delete key.
| | 02:03 | You can also highlight what you want,
right-click, and choose Cut, and it'll ripple
| | 02:09 | edit for you, which means it's going
to close the gap on its own. Let me just
| | 02:12 | redo that and show you: right-click, Cut,
and you see how it moved over? But like I
| | 02:18 | said, because it made a cut here, it
changed the dynamic of this clip. This is now
| | 02:23 | a shorter clip and it
doesn't seamlessly go through.
| | 02:26 | Now what if I wanted to
change the order of clips?
| | 02:29 | Well, that's easy too. Let's just zoom out.
And I might want to this clip now to be
| | 02:34 | at the end, so I can click--
actually we'll use this clip that I cut.
| | 02:38 | We're going to click and drag this one
to the left, and I'm going to let go. See how
| | 02:43 | it's snapping right there with the little arrows.
| | 02:47 | Now that's snapped over and moved this
one to the right and left me a gap here, so
| | 02:51 | I just need to go in, right-click,
Delete and Close Gap, and it closed it.
| | 02:55 | I am going to press Command+Z to undo all this.
| | 02:57 | I can drag this clip to the very end
by clicking and dragging, letting go. It leaves
| | 03:04 | another gap. I can right-
click, Delete and Close Gap.
| | 03:07 | So it's really simple to
arrange, add, and delete clips.
| | 03:12 | You have a lot of options using
the Sceneline or the Timeline.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Modifying clips with the context menu| 00:00 | One of the cool things in Elements 10
is if you right-click on Footage or on
| | 00:05 | empty tracks, you have a submenu
that you can do some really cool things.
| | 00:09 | Let's take a look.
| | 00:10 | If I go into this Audio 2 track that's
empty and I choose Track Size, it brings up
| | 00:15 | different sizes of icon.
| | 00:17 | So if I want to see these thumbnails
larger, I can right-click here, choose
| | 00:22 | Track Size, and choose Large, and here they are.
| | 00:26 | I prefer working with small,
so I am going to choose Small.
| | 00:31 | I can right-click up here.
| | 00:32 | I can add tracks so if I click that, it
will add a track, up to 5 tracks, if I would
| | 00:37 | like, before or after.
| | 00:38 | I am going to leave it default, click OK.
| | 00:40 | If I scroll up, I have got a fourth track now.
| | 00:45 | But maybe I know I am not going to use
any tracks other than Video1 an Audio1,
| | 00:49 | so I can right-click once again and
Delete Empty Tracks just to keep everything
| | 00:53 | nice and tidy.
| | 00:54 | I can also right-click once again and
uncheck Snap, so when these checks are
| | 00:59 | shown--and you will see these another
menu items--that means that that is enabled.
| | 01:04 | So snapping right now is enabled.
| | 01:07 | And we talked about snapping in the
previous chapter. But if I turn that off for
| | 01:10 | now and let me just grab a piece of
footage, and I bring that down here,
| | 01:15 | now if I drag it to the left, I can
keep dragging, because it's not snapping.
| | 01:20 | So I am going to press Command+Z
to get rid of that, Ctrl+Z on a PC.
| | 01:26 | I will right-click once again and
enable Snap, and now I'll try and do that again.
| | 01:31 | I will drag it down here and as I am
going to the left, it snaps into place.
| | 01:36 | Do it one more time. Snaps.
| | 01:39 | So snapping may be part of
your workflow or you may hate it.
| | 01:42 | Let's Command+Z, Ctrl+Z to get that out.
| | 01:45 | Now if I click on the actual clip by
just clicking on it and selecting it and
| | 01:49 | right-click, we have a ton of menu
items here. And I am just going to go over
| | 01:53 | the important ones for now.
| | 01:54 | You can cut and copy. So if I wanted
to just press Copy, for example, and I
| | 01:59 | went to the end here and press Command+
V or Ctrl+V, it would paste a separate
| | 02:05 | clip right there of that copy.
| | 02:07 | We will Command+Z or Ctrl+Z to get out of that.
| | 02:09 | We will go back.
| | 02:10 | I will right-click.
| | 02:14 | I can Delete and Close Gap, and we
talked about that before, but here's a
| | 02:18 | context menu that we can use, so if
I go into this second item here and I
| | 02:22 | right-click, Delete and Close Gap,
it's going to delete that and close the gap for us.
| | 02:26 | So there it goes.
| | 02:28 | Now there is no gap here
between the two pieces of footage.
| | 02:30 | The other one is gone.
Let's Command+Z or Ctrl+Z to get out of that.
| | 02:33 | We will right-click again. Enable
is something that's pretty important, so
| | 02:37 | Enable is checked.
| | 02:38 | That means that this piece of
footage is enabled, and we can see it.
| | 02:42 | So let's see what happens when I deselect it.
| | 02:45 | It turns gray or like a white.
| | 02:47 | Now if I play it in the Timeline and
I go over that piece of footage it turns black.
| | 02:52 | And let's re-enable that.
| | 02:54 | And now let's go over to this
clip that has both audio and video.
| | 02:58 | So why would Enable be interesting here?
| | 03:00 | Well, yes, if I right-click and choose
Enable to deselect it, it turns white and
| | 03:06 | there is no audio or video. But what if
I click it again to enable it? And then
| | 03:12 | the next item down is the Unlink Audio or Video.
| | 03:15 | So let's select that.
| | 03:17 | That unlinked the audio from the video.
| | 03:19 | And I will click over here to
the side to deselect them both.
| | 03:22 | So now maybe I just want to hear the
audio on this clip and not have the video.
| | 03:27 | Maybe I am going to put something on top of it, or
| | 03:29 | I just want a long piece of
video here that just has audio.
| | 03:33 | So, I am going to select the video,
right-click, click on Enable to deselect it,
| | 03:38 | and it's gone. But if I play the clip.
| | 03:41 | (music playing)
| | 03:44 | You hear the music.
| | 03:48 | So let's go back and enable it again,
and there it plays again. And likewise,
| | 03:54 | if I wanted to do the same with the
audio, I can just right-click on the audio
| | 03:58 | and choose Enable. The audio turns
white and I will play the clip and now
| | 04:02 | there is no audio.
| | 04:07 | And we will enable that one more time.
| | 04:08 | Now I can go back and select both clips,
right-click, and link them back up again.
| | 04:15 | So I will press Link Audio and Video,
and now they are one clip one more time.
| | 04:20 | Now another item is the Fade. So if I
want to do a quick fade and not have to go
| | 04:25 | searching through my transitions,
go to the beginning of the movie.
| | 04:28 | I want to fade in from black.
| | 04:30 | I am going to right-click here.
| | 04:31 | I am going to select it, right-
click, go to Fade > Fade in Video.
| | 04:36 | It creates a fade right there.
| | 04:38 | If I start to press Play,
it fades in from black.
| | 04:42 | As you can see, Elements 10 has some
great options in the context click menu.
| | 04:49 | Some of them we may cover in another,
video but the ones I showed you now will
| | 04:53 | give you much more control
in your editing process.

| Rendering: What is the red bar?| 00:00 | While you are editing in Premiere
Elements 10, you may come across times where
| | 00:04 | you'll see this gray line right here
turn red, and what that's telling you is
| | 00:10 | you have added something to your
clip that needs to be rendered.
| | 00:13 | It needs to be processed so that
the clip understands what you did.
| | 00:17 | So I am going to click into the Edit
menu here and choose an effect. And we are
| | 00:23 | going to talk about effects
later, so don't worry about that now.
| | 00:25 | I am just going to show you why
something might need to be rendered.
| | 00:28 | If I go here and I look into my Color
Corrections, for example, and I choose
| | 00:33 | this Auto Vibrance and I just
either drag it on there or onto the clip,
| | 00:37 | I am just going to drag it on,
| | 00:38 | you can see the colors have moved up.
| | 00:40 | And really nice now, I like that.
| | 00:41 | But it's created this red bar, and the
red bar is telling me that this clip and
| | 00:47 | that effect are meshing together,
but it has not been processed by the computer yet.
| | 00:52 | So if you have a slow computer with not
much memory or ram, it's going to play
| | 00:57 | back a little bit slow.
| | 00:59 | So if I press the spacebar here, it's
playing okay because we are on a pretty
| | 01:03 | solid computer here.
| | 01:05 | But as you can see, it's a little
bit of colorization weirdness.
| | 01:10 | That's because it really
needs to process this together.
| | 01:13 | So how do we do that?
| | 01:14 | Very simple. You just go to
your keyboard, press the Enter key,
| | 01:17 | and it's going to bring up this
Rendering box. It's telling me the percentage, how many
| | 01:22 | frames, how much time I
have left, boom, and it's done.
| | 01:25 | And now it's a green line.
We like green. It's green.
| | 01:29 | And now it's going to play back in real time.
| | 01:36 | Now one last thing: because we
rendered, Elements creates kind of a cached
| | 01:41 | file of this render.
| | 01:42 | Now it's not a problem, but it's going
to help fill up space on your hard drive
| | 01:45 | if you don't watch else, so let's
take a look at where that file is.
| | 01:51 | And I am going to my Desktop, the
exercise files, Chapter03. Elements creates a
| | 01:58 | folder called Adobe Premiere Elements
Preview Files, and I will double-click on
| | 02:02 | that, and we will go to the last one here
that says render. But before I do that,
| | 02:07 | you can see these other files from
previous chapters are in there as well.
| | 02:10 | Let's double-click here,
and here's our Rendered file.
| | 02:14 | We will right-click and take a look at that.
| | 02:17 | So that added 74 MB to our hard drive.
| | 02:19 | So just think if you have hundreds of
clips in your video timeline and you
| | 02:24 | have to render them all.
| | 02:25 | You are going to have a lot of
your hard drive taken up by these.
| | 02:28 | So, my recommendation is at the end of
your video when you have rendered out and
| | 02:32 | you sent it to DVD or put it on the web
and you are done with this project, go
| | 02:36 | in there and clean up these files.
| | 02:38 | It's not going to affect your main
project because it will still be there in the
| | 02:41 | Timeline, but it's going to clean
up your hard drive a little bit.
| | 02:44 | And that's how we render.
| | 02:45 | Now there's other things that may
cause you to render, such as transitions or
| | 02:49 | audio changes, other effects, and we
are going to get into all of that later as
| | 02:53 | the course continues.

4. Basic EditingAdjusting clip length in the Preview window| 00:00 | In the previous chapter, we have talked
about importing clips to the Timeline,
| | 00:04 | but what if you don't want that entire
clip? I mean rarely are you going to use
| | 00:08 | an entire clip that you shot.
| | 00:09 | You are going to need to fine-tune it.
| | 00:11 | That's where the Preview window comes in.
| | 00:13 | So with my footage in here selected,
I can double-click. It opens up
| | 00:17 | this Preview monitor.
| | 00:19 | I can also right-click on it
and say Open in Clip Monitor.
| | 00:24 | So within this monitor, I
can create in and out points.
| | 00:28 | Where do I want the video to
begin and where do I want it to stop?
| | 00:32 | So let's just take a look.
| | 00:33 | I am moving to Current Time Indicator.
| | 00:35 | I am going to find some dancing here,
maybe right there before they start to
| | 00:40 | roll, and I am going to press this SetIn point.
| | 00:44 | And then we are going to go ahead a little bit.
| | 00:47 | When they stop to roll and little spin,
I am going to press the SetOut point.
| | 00:52 | Now, I have created a clip that I
may want to use for a certain part of my movie.
| | 00:56 | Now you can see this blue
area and the handles I have here.
| | 01:01 | This is my area that I have just cut.
| | 01:03 | So let's Command+Z and Ctrl+Z out of
this, and it's back to where it was.
| | 01:07 | So if I want this to be the end, I can
once again click SetOut point, press the
| | 01:12 | letter O if I want, or click and drag. And let go.
| | 01:17 | And then we'll back up a little
bit, and that's where I want it to start.
| | 01:23 | I can press the SetIn point or
hold my mouse here and click and drag.
| | 01:28 | And now this little gray area is the
part of the clip that I am going to
| | 01:32 | use, and I am just going to click on
it, drag it down into my Timeline, and
| | 01:36 | let go, and there it is.
| | 01:38 | Now the clip is also in the Sceneline as well.
| | 01:41 | I'll close out the Preview window and
you see if I play it, that's the clip of
| | 01:45 | them rolling and spinning and stopping.
| | 01:50 | Go back into the Timeline,
press the spacebar, there they are.
| | 01:58 | So by using the Preview window, you
can really fine-tune your clips as you
| | 02:02 | begin editing.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Adjusting clip length in the Sceneline| 00:00 | So we have our clips in the Sceneline,
but if we want to make them shorter or longer?
| | 00:04 | Well, let's take a look how.
| | 00:06 | So with my three clips in the Sceneline
and if I just scrub through them here,
| | 00:09 | you will see I go here one clip to this
next clip, to the next clip. But maybe
| | 00:15 | as I was editing, I just found some
clips I thought were good and didn't really
| | 00:18 | look at the length, and now they are kind
of lagging along and not really telling
| | 00:22 | my story as I would like it to do.
| | 00:24 | So what can I do?
| | 00:25 | Well, as you can see, within my
project window here, I have these two handles
| | 00:30 | that represent the in and the out of the clip.
| | 00:33 | Now if I started the clip from the
very beginning, I'm pretty much stuck
| | 00:38 | with that intro area.
| | 00:39 | But if I made it shorter than it was
when I brought it in the project, I have
| | 00:44 | room here to extend it or to make it smaller.
| | 00:47 | All of this is done in what's
called nondestructive editing, meaning
| | 00:51 | you're not actually
shortening or making that clip longer;
| | 00:55 | it stays the same.
| | 00:56 | The reference that you are making to
that clip, which is this little clip here,
| | 01:01 | the reference you are making to this
video file is becoming shorter or longer.
| | 01:05 | The video file always stays the same.
| | 01:07 | So as I am watching this, I like where
it starts, and if I go when this guy in
| | 01:12 | green steps up and puts his head down
in a second right there, I think that's
| | 01:16 | where I want to stop. So I am just going to click, hold, and
drag to the left as I see this red. The red
| | 01:23 | means everything that's going to go away.
So I am going to let go.
| | 01:26 | So now if I go back a little bit and play,
I see he puts his head down and then
| | 01:32 | we transition into the next video.
| | 01:34 | As I said before, it's nondestructive.
| | 01:36 | I could go back here and say you
know what, I want that all back.
| | 01:40 | So I can click, hold, and drag, and bring it back.
| | 01:45 | But I like when he does this.
| | 01:47 | So he just puts with his head down,
and we are going to transition into the next video.
| | 01:52 | And now we go here.
| | 01:53 | Now on this one, I particularly don't
like how she is kind of frowning there.
| | 01:58 | I think she smiles a little
bit because it's a happy day.
| | 02:02 | So maybe about right there she has got
a little smile on her face, so I am going
| | 02:06 | to click the in point, drag it to the
right and let go, and now if I look,
| | 02:12 | she's smiling. She's keeps looking.
| | 02:15 | We will stop about right there.
| | 02:16 | She is looking over at the instructor.
| | 02:18 | So I am going to click on this one,
drag it in, let go, and we go from here to
| | 02:25 | her dancing right there. And I would
probably apply a nice little transition
| | 02:29 | right here, and we will go into
transitions at another time, but we will make a
| | 02:33 | nice smooth transition over to the next video.
| | 02:35 | So changing the duration to clips
within the Sceneline is really easy and very
| | 02:40 | much the essence of video editing.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Adjusting clip length in the Timeline| 00:00 | We just saw how to trim your clips,
adjust the length, make them longer within
| | 00:05 | the Sceneline, but now let's take a
look at how to do that in the Timeline.
| | 00:08 | So I have got my three
clips once again down here.
| | 00:10 | I've got my CTI, or my Current Time
Indicator, right here, and if I move this and
| | 00:16 | you look right here, you can see that
you've got the time moving, so that's why
| | 00:20 | this is called the Current Time Indicator.
| | 00:22 | Problem I have is that everything is
really small, and I don't have room to work here.
| | 00:26 | So I am going to go up to the Zoom
window here, and it says Zoom Out and Zoom In.
| | 00:30 | If I click and hold, drag it to
the right, I have got some room now.
| | 00:35 | Same footage, wonderful.
| | 00:38 | So let's talk a little bit about
once again that this is a Premiere
| | 00:42 | Elements project file.
| | 00:44 | Once again, I am going to try
and drill this in your head.
| | 00:47 | Whatever you do here in the Timeline
or the Sceneline has no effect over your
| | 00:53 | master footage in here.
| | 00:55 | None at all. If you make this green, if
you spin it upside down or sideways,
| | 00:59 | if you invert it, whatever you do,
will never affect the master file.
| | 01:04 | So you can be as creative
as you like within your clip.
| | 01:08 | So with that knowledge and power,
let's move on and have some fun.
| | 01:12 | So once again, I am moving,
and I want to edit right there.
| | 01:17 | So now in the Timeline we have our cursor.
| | 01:22 | And if I hover over a piece of footage--
let's say I will select this footage,
| | 01:26 | that's the one I am going to edit--
| | 01:27 | when I hold my cursor over the two
pieces of footage here--see they are
| | 01:31 | connecting right here--the arrows to
the left are going to affect this piece of footage.
| | 01:36 | The arrow to the right is going
to affect this piece of footage.
| | 01:39 | So to the left is going to affect this footage,
to right, this footage, and so on.
| | 01:46 | So now, I want to stop right there.
| | 01:49 | I am just going to go to my little
area here, click and hold and drag, and
| | 01:53 | there it goes.
| | 01:54 | Let's do that one more time.
| | 01:56 | I am going to hit Undo, and now we are
going to go back here. And I want to take a
| | 02:00 | look into this Preview monitor here, and
now when I click and drag, I can see on
| | 02:05 | the left what I am cutting or
trimming. And when I stop, I have got it there.
| | 02:11 | Now the other good thing is that
Elements moves over and shifts the other pieces
| | 02:17 | of footage that I have in the Timeline.
| | 02:18 | Now what if it didn't do that? We
would have a big gap, and let's take a look at that.
| | 02:22 | I am going to click and drag the other
clips, let go, and now I have got this big
| | 02:28 | gap, which is not very interesting.
| | 02:31 | So if that ever happens to you, you can
right-click in the area, choose Delete
| | 02:36 | and Close Gap, and it will do it for you.
| | 02:39 | Okay, so the next clip, I
see her frowning once again.
| | 02:43 | I want her to smile because she knows
she is going to dance soon, and there she
| | 02:46 | is smiling, so I am going to go here,
click and drag, and Elements shifted over
| | 02:53 | these two clips to button up against this clip.
| | 02:56 | And if I Play, she is smiling and then
the dance coach calls her, and we will
| | 03:03 | drag this over. It's her turn to dance.
| | 03:07 | So there she is right there, so now I
am going to trim this one, and now she is dancing.
| | 03:13 | So we see these people dancing.
The girl is waiting for her turn.
| | 03:17 | The coach calls her, she goes in and
dances, and I would add some transitions
| | 03:22 | here and have some fun.
| | 03:24 | And then this might be a little long, so
then I might trim this, click and drag.
| | 03:29 | Okay so we finished trimming.
| | 03:30 | Now let's go up here and hit the
play button, but I want to go back to the beginning.
| | 03:36 | So I am just going to drag it back,
press the play button, and there is
| | 03:42 | everybody dancing.
| | 03:44 | I would transition there to the girl,
and then there she is dancing, and it's
| | 03:50 | great. Then I would probably fade it out.
| | 03:52 | So there we go, so you can see how
easy it is to trim your projects.
| | 03:56 | But what if I wanted to go back here
and see her actually frowning, give her
| | 04:01 | that little bit of a frown because
she was unhappy that she hadn't being picked yet?
| | 04:04 | So I am just going to
drag the footage to the left.
| | 04:07 | Let's see, right there, she is little
pouty let go and now if I play it, there
| | 04:14 | she is, maybe a little bit more even, so
I will click and drag it a little more.
| | 04:18 | We will go back and I will play it again.
| | 04:21 | We go there, the boy nods.
| | 04:24 | There is the girl, a little sad, oh she
is smiling, she might get picked, and
| | 04:27 | she gets picked.
| | 04:29 | So as you saw, I could drag in and out,
trimming things, making them longer,
| | 04:34 | making them shorter, all
nondestructively, as I said, within Premiere Elements.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Playing with time: Freeze, change speed, and duration| 00:00 | Time. Time is money, but it is also
changeable and you can freeze it too,
| | 00:05 | especially in Premiere Elements.
| | 00:06 | Let's take a look at how to do that.
| | 00:08 | Once again, I have my three clips
of my dancers, my girl pouting, and she
| | 00:13 | finally dances, and I also added a clip
of an interview from the dance company.
| | 00:18 | We will take a look at that in a second.
| | 00:20 | Okay, first things first.
| | 00:21 | I think she really would be
happy to see this in slow motion.
| | 00:25 | So I have a tool here called the Time
Stretch tool, and if I go up into my area
| | 00:29 | here where my tools are, I am
currently in the cursor, or the Selection tool.
| | 00:34 | I can go next to it into the Time
Stretch tool, or click the letter X as a shortcut.
| | 00:39 | So I am going to select the Time Stretch tool.
| | 00:41 | Now what if I want to make it faster?
| | 00:43 | So the Time Stretch tool becomes this
really strange cursor. And if I hold it
| | 00:48 | over, you can see it's just like
the other tool, but I have got the two
| | 00:51 | arrows up and down now, and that's
indicating to me that I can speed things up
| | 00:56 | or slow them down.
| | 00:57 | So I am going to select the end here,
click and drag, maybe to there, and while I
| | 01:04 | am at it, I am going to expand a little more.
| | 01:06 | So I can see now that--and let's
go just a little more zooming in--
| | 01:10 | I have got 139.06%. And once again I have
the red bar, which means I would need to
| | 01:17 | pre-render this, but we are
not going to do that right now.
| | 01:19 | We are going to press play and
there they are, moving a lot faster.
| | 01:23 | And you also notice that as I did that,
I got a gap here, so once again you
| | 01:27 | would right-click and
choose to delete and close.
| | 01:30 | We are not going to do that just yet.
We are going to Command+Z to undo, and we are
| | 01:34 | at 100%. And I am going to zoom in a little bit.
| | 01:36 | What if I want to make it slower?
| | 01:40 | I can click and drag. I can't.
| | 01:42 | I am stuck. Why? Because
there is a clip next to it.
| | 01:45 | I go to this clip, try
and drag to the right.
| | 01:48 | It won't let me.
| | 01:48 | I can only make it faster or
click it in or make it smaller.
| | 01:52 | So I can't slow it down just yet.
| | 01:55 | However, let me just drag my Selection
tool, move this interview clip over, go
| | 02:01 | back to my Time Stretch tool,
| | 02:03 | now if I drag it to the
right, I can slow it down.
| | 02:07 | And now I have slowed it down to 66.91%.
And I can click and play and there she
| | 02:13 | is moving a lot slower. Cool. And we will
stop it there. And now I might like that
| | 02:19 | and I might want to right-
click and delete and close the gap.
| | 02:23 | So let me undo this, because there
is another way to do this, without all of
| | 02:26 | that dragging around.
| | 02:28 | So I do want to make this slower, so as
my Time Stretch tool is selected, I am
| | 02:34 | going to go over the piece of
footage I want to slow down, I am going to
| | 02:37 | right-click, and this gives me some options.
| | 02:40 | Go down till I see Time Stretch and click that.
| | 02:43 | Now in the Time Stretch dialog box, I
can change the speed to anything I want
| | 02:47 | by clicking and dragging left and right.
| | 02:50 | I can also click in it and choose in
exact amount. So let's say I am going to go 50%.
| | 02:55 | I want it to be really slow.
| | 02:56 | It's showing me that my
duration is now 17 seconds.
| | 03:00 | I can reverse it, so go backwards,
and we will actually do that. And
| | 03:04 | Maintain Audio Pitch,
| | 03:05 | we are going to talk about
that with the interview footage.
| | 03:08 | So let's just click this.
So I click OK.
| | 03:10 | Now it pushed the other clip away from
it, allowed me to stretch it, and I am
| | 03:15 | playing it 50%, and it's backwards.
| | 03:17 | So let's go back here and when I press
play, there it is, all slow motion in 50%,
| | 03:26 | and it's backwards from what it was.
| | 03:28 | Maybe I think that's the way it
should be. Time should go backwards.
| | 03:34 | So it really is that simple, and let's go back.
| | 03:36 | Command+Z to undo this. And if you see,
we are playing in real time, and we are
| | 03:42 | going in the right direction.
| | 03:43 | Now let's go into this interview, and
let me just play this for a couple of
| | 03:46 | seconds, by pressing the
spacebar or clicking the play button.
| | 03:50 | (Female speaker: Dance classes.
That's the foundation of our programming.)
| | 03:54 | So she is talking about dance
classes and programming, which is pretty
| | 03:57 | relevant to this.
| | 03:58 | Now if I wanted to, I can go to the end
here, since there is nothing there, and I can
| | 04:02 | slow this down and press play.
| | 04:05 | (Female speaker: That's the foundation of our programming. Um.)
| | 04:11 | Okay, but what if I want to make it
faster. So let's say I make it really fast
| | 04:17 | and I will press play now.
| | 04:18 | (sped-up inaudible speech)
| | 04:22 | So that sounded really weird, and
that's where we talk about what pitch is, a
| | 04:26 | high pitch or a low pitch.
(sped-up inaudible speech)
| | 04:29 | This chipmunk sound is the high pitch,
and we don't want that, and there is ways
| | 04:33 | to fix that. So let's undo this by
pressing Command+Z and now we have got our
| | 04:39 | normal speed, and I will just test it.
| | 04:40 | I am hitting the spacebar, okay we are good.
| | 04:44 | So instead of dragging, I am going to
right-click once again, go into Time
| | 04:49 | Stretch, and I am going to make this
150%, but I am going to maintain my audio pitch.
| | 04:58 | So make sure that's selected, click OK.
| | 05:00 | Let's go back a little bit.
Let's press the Spacebar.
| | 05:03 | (sped-up inaudible speech)
| | 05:08 | Okay, so you can see it's
completely different now.
| | 05:10 | It's not sounding as chipmonky.
| | 05:12 | It's little weird, but it sound useable.
| | 05:15 | So that's how you would do that.
| | 05:16 | And I am going to press Command+Z to undo.
| | 05:19 | Now one last feature that's really cool.
| | 05:21 | What if right here she is doing her move
| | 05:23 | I wanted to freeze that time?
| | 05:25 | I am going to go up here into
this lovely little camera here
| | 05:28 | that's called the Freeze Frame, and I am
going to select it, and this is showing
| | 05:32 | me what I am freezing, how
many seconds I want it to be.
| | 05:34 | So I am just going to start
with the default to five seconds.
| | 05:37 | If you have Adobe Photoshop Elements
installed as well, you can send it to
| | 05:42 | Photoshop Elements after you have done
this. Maybe you want to do some kind of
| | 05:46 | the cartoon look in it or something, whatever.
| | 05:49 | You can do all that, be creative if you'd like.
| | 05:51 | Now I can export a freeze frame clip or
I can just insert it right there where I want it.
| | 05:55 | So I am going to insert it into my movie.
| | 05:57 | It moves everything over and now if I
press play, we are playing, we are frozen,
| | 06:03 | and we are playing again.
| | 06:08 | That's a little long, so I am
going to get my Selection tool.
| | 06:13 | I am going to drag it over
a couple of seconds, let go.
| | 06:17 | It ripple-edits.
| | 06:18 | I am going to press Play once again.
| | 06:21 | We froze and we are doing it again.
| | 06:25 | So as you can see, it's really
easy to become a master of time in
| | 06:29 | Premiere Elements.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Splitting and moving clips| 00:00 | In the last movie, we saw how to slow
and freeze time, but what if we wanted to
| | 00:05 | both of them to the same clip to make
one part of the clip really fast, one part
| | 00:10 | of it slow, or have a freeze frame of a
different clip and bring that in? How do
| | 00:14 | we move all that around?
| | 00:15 | Let's take a look at that.
| | 00:17 | So in my dance footage once again--and
actually let me expand this a little bit.
| | 00:22 | My dance footage. I might want to go to
right here and then make it really slow,
| | 00:28 | so let me go from here to there. And
Premiere Elements has a great tool called
| | 00:34 | the Split Clip tool, or Command+K as a shortcut.
| | 00:38 | It's actually just a pair of
scissors, so think of it as that.
| | 00:42 | Anywhere that I have my Current Time
Indicator, the red line with the blue
| | 00:46 | icon, and I click this, it's going to
make a cut in the clip. So I can click once here.
| | 00:52 | Now I have split this into two clips.
| | 00:55 | Now they are both, like I said,
non-destructive. Nothing has happened to the
| | 00:58 | footage, so don't worry. Just be creative.
| | 01:01 | So now we are playing at normal speed.
| | 01:04 | I might want to slow it down right
here, so I am going to click another split clip.
| | 01:08 | I am going to go back to this footage,
right-click, go into my Time Stretch tool,
| | 01:13 | and let's make this 50%.
| | 01:17 | So it made it slower, it moved the
other footage over, and it's looking good.
| | 01:21 | So let's press the Play button.
| | 01:24 | It goes at normal speed. Then we are
slowing down, and then we pick it up again.
| | 01:32 | So what if now I wanted to have
a part of my interview in here?
| | 01:37 | So let me go over here to the interview
| | 01:39 | and me just grab a little bit, press
my Split Clip tool, and now I can click,
| | 01:45 | drag it over here, let go, and now I've
got normal speed, slow motion, the girl
| | 01:57 | talking, and back to where she was
dancing before, without breaking a rhythm.
| | 02:03 | So that's the power of using the Split
Clip tool and the ability to move clips
| | 02:07 | around in Premiere Elements.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Applying transitions: Getting from scene to scene| 00:00 | Going from A to B. Transitions are a
great way to get there, so let's learn how to do that.
| | 00:05 | But first, what is a transition?
| | 00:07 | Well, a transition could be a fade-in
at the beginning of a movie or going from
| | 00:11 | one scene to the next with a cross-
dissolve, taking a part of one scene and the
| | 00:16 | other scene and blending them together.
| | 00:18 | It could also be stars taking you from one
scene to the other with a starry night.
| | 00:22 | So transitions are a lot of fun and
really can help you tell your story.
| | 00:26 | So in our story here we have
the girl standing in the corner.
| | 00:31 | We have her right there, her coach
says come in, and now she's dancing.
| | 00:36 | So while this is all nice, I think
transitions would make it a lot better. And
| | 00:40 | lastly, what about when the interview comes in?
| | 00:44 | It really doesn't pertain too much to
the first three as part of the story, as
| | 00:48 | part of the storyline, but not
that little story right here.
| | 00:52 | So I might want to fade to black and
then fade in, because it's another instance
| | 00:55 | that's going on here.
| | 00:57 | So let's do this all together.
| | 00:58 | We are going to start at the
beginning when they're dancing. So to add a
| | 01:01 | transition I go to Edit > Transitions,
and in this dropdown menu I have got
| | 01:07 | Video and Audio Transitions and Plus
Member Only, and that's for people that are
| | 01:11 | Plus Members with Adobe.
| | 01:13 | I can also click in here and type Search
and look for a transition by name, if I
| | 01:18 | know the exact name of it.
| | 01:19 | So I have got Video Transition
selected and if I look under them, I have got
| | 01:24 | Cube Spins and Flip Overs, all kinds of
dissolves, iris transitions where it'll
| | 01:30 | go from one to the other, like in a
circle, like in an iris of a lens, Bouncing
| | 01:35 | Cubes, Box Explode. I mean it ships with
a lot of transitions that can be a lot of fun.
| | 01:41 | Here's one called Metallic Ice. So play
with them, be as creative as you like.
| | 01:46 | Here is a Wave and a Zoom and a Roll and
a Shake, lots of fun. But I don't think
| | 01:50 | any of them pertain to our story.
| | 01:52 | So I am just going to go kind of old
school and just go into my Dip to Black.
| | 01:56 | So I am going to select that, drag it
down into my footage, the very beginning, and let go.
| | 02:02 | Now if I press play here, it
fades from black to them dancing.
| | 02:06 | So I like that, and then I want this
to cross-dissolve, going from A to B.
| | 02:14 | So it's taking a little bit of this
frame and a little bit of the next frame and
| | 02:18 | blending it together, so I am going to
take the cross-dissolve and drag it here
| | 02:24 | in the middle and let go, and we will press play.
| | 02:27 | And now we dissolve nicely to the
girl and she looks at her coach, and we're
| | 02:32 | going to cross-dissolve again, and
press play, and there she is, dancing.
| | 02:41 | So it really enhances the story a lot.
| | 02:43 | Now before I get into the interview, I
might want to just dip to black and kind
| | 02:48 | of put a bookend to this whole thing.
| | 02:50 | So I am going to select that and put it
right there in between the two pieces of
| | 02:53 | footage and if I press play, it goes to that.
| | 02:58 | So let's just watch this
whole thing from the beginning.
| | 03:00 | It fades in, cross-dissolves, cross-
dissolves again, and gets ready to fade out.
| | 03:17 | So that's a nice little story.
| | 03:18 | I think that's a great job
if I do say so myself.
| | 03:21 | But what if I wanted to make the intro
a little more dramatic, like maybe it
| | 03:25 | takes a long time to get going.
| | 03:27 | So I can just click on the
transition, which is this little arrow.
| | 03:31 | It's transitioning from one to the other.
| | 03:32 | That's what the arrow means.
| | 03:33 | I am going to double-click on that, and
by doing that it brings up the effect in
| | 03:38 | the Edit tab here. And your timeline
might be showing or might not be showing,
| | 03:44 | but we are going to have it showing.
And what this is showing me here is that
| | 03:49 | this is the transition right here.
It's got a duration of one second.
| | 03:52 | If I expand this a little bit, you can
see it's going from A to B. But what if
| | 03:57 | I want to make it a little longer?
| | 03:58 | I can just go here, just like we moved
footage in the Timeline, click and drag,
| | 04:04 | go out a few more seconds, and now let go.
| | 04:07 | Let's come back to the Timeline here,
press play, and it's a little longer.
| | 04:13 | So as you see down here as well, if I
press Command+Z to undo, it goes back to
| | 04:19 | the area here that it started with.
| | 04:20 | I am going to redo that
because I like slow intro.
| | 04:29 | And now if I want to go a little longer
on the girl here, I can do that as well.
| | 04:33 | So I might double-click there and on
cross-dissolves, you have two sides.
| | 04:37 | So maybe I want to come in a little
bit there and drag it a little bit more there.
| | 04:42 | Once again, the icon shows
you that, the in and the out,
| | 04:46 | but what if I want to move the whole transition?
| | 04:48 | I can see these black marks right
here, and I can click and hold and drag
| | 04:52 | the whole transition.
| | 04:54 | So it's very, very customizable. And
we will go back and press play, and there we go.
| | 05:03 | So as you can see, transitions can
enhance your scenes and make your movie
| | 05:08 | look very professional.

5. Applying and Editing Video EffectsApplying effects to clips| 00:00 | Have you ever thought "Wow, a little blur
would just be nice here," or "Geez I love
| | 00:05 | that cartoon look I saw in the movie;
| | 00:06 | I really want my film to have that cartoon look"?
| | 00:08 | Well, you know what?
| | 00:09 | You are in luck, because Elements 10
has some great video effects that you can
| | 00:13 | easily add to your clips.
Let's take a look.
| | 00:16 | So I have got my dance video here that
I may want to enhance here with some fun
| | 00:20 | video effects, such as this clip here.
| | 00:23 | Maybe I want to give this that cartoon
kind of look, so what I do is go into
| | 00:28 | my Edit panel here, with this clip
selected, and you will see it's there, and
| | 00:34 | now I am going to look at my different effects.
| | 00:36 | So I have Video Effects chosen.
| | 00:39 | I am going to click on the down arrow
here for Show All, but it's going to give
| | 00:42 | me all the different ones I have, and I
am going to scroll down here and choose
| | 00:46 | NewBlue Cartooner Plus.
| | 00:50 | So I am going to click on that, and here
it is. To add an effect, you just click
| | 00:55 | and you drag it, and you
let go. Pretty simple stuff.
| | 00:58 | And now if I go back a few frames and press play,
| | 01:01 | they are dancing in this weird cartoon world.
| | 01:06 | And what if I wanted to edit this a
little bit? So I just need to select
| | 01:09 | that footage once again, and down
here is the Edit Effects applied on the
| | 01:15 | Selected Clip dialog box.
| | 01:17 | So I click on that and this gives me
the opportunity to change things up.
| | 01:22 | So of I down arrow here, I've got presets.
| | 01:25 | I can do Architecture, Paint Blobs--
| | 01:29 | that's kind of a cool thing--
Light Cartoon, et cetera.
| | 01:33 | I kind of like that animation that we
first had, so let me go back to that.
| | 01:37 | And then the Lines.
| | 01:38 | Now, I can change the Density by
clicking and dragging to the right, letting go,
| | 01:42 | and you can see they get little dense.
| | 01:44 | I can change my width a little bit,
make them thicker. Mixing it up between the
| | 01:52 | footage and the effect.
| | 01:54 | So right now it's at 75%. And then
here is the Paint, so I can change it
| | 01:59 | to different layers.
| | 02:00 | There are just so many options that you can do.
| | 02:02 | It would take us hours and hours
to go through them all, so I ask you
| | 02:05 | please them on your own.
| | 02:06 | They are lot of fun. You will see.
| | 02:08 | Now I can also toggle back and forth
of whether or not I liked the effect or
| | 02:12 | not, so I can click here. Yeah, I
think that that looks pretty good.
| | 02:16 | Now if I go to the next slide and it's
this Dance Studio, what if I wanted this
| | 02:21 | to be maybe a little blurry here?
| | 02:24 | So I am going to go into my Blurs
And Sharpens, and Gaussian Blur is very
| | 02:29 | popular, so we are going to
click on that. Drag it here.
| | 02:31 | And as you can see, it added a cool
little blur, and I am going to click on it to
| | 02:36 | select it and I am going to edit the
effect. And I can keyframe these, which is
| | 02:40 | a new term that we are going to talk
about in another movie, and actually do a
| | 02:44 | little transition of blurry,
non-blurry, back and forth.
| | 02:48 | But right now, we are
just going to keep it blurry.
| | 02:51 | And then here are the people dancing.
| | 02:53 | She looks a little blurry, so you know
what I want to do is sharpen her up. So I
| | 02:57 | am going to go back into my Effects.
| | 02:58 | I am going to select the clip, and here
next to the Gaussian Blur is the Sharpen.
| | 03:03 | I am going to click and select it on
there, and now I am going to click Edit
| | 03:07 | Effect > Sharpen, and I am going to bring
that up maybe 32. And if I deselect it,
| | 03:13 | you can see it's blurry, and if I
put it back on, we see it fine.
| | 03:17 | So as you can see, adding effects can
be great enhancers to your videos, by
| | 03:22 | making them artistic, enhancing the
footage itself by making it more in focus
| | 03:26 | or out of focus.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| The new Pan and Zoom tool| 00:00 | If you have ever seen the awesome
documentaries of Ken Burns with the subtle
| | 00:04 | movement of the stills, well now you
can re-create those with the new Pan &
| | 00:09 | Zoom tool in Elements 10.
| | 00:11 | So here I've got a still that I have
applied the Pan & Zoom tool to, and
| | 00:15 | let's press play.
| | 00:15 | Instead of just sitting
there, it moves nice and slow.
| | 00:20 | I can add some narration underneath and
make it a lot more interesting than just
| | 00:25 | looking at a photo and hearing my voice.
| | 00:27 | So how do we do that?
| | 00:28 | Well, let's go into our
Photos and let's pick a photo.
| | 00:34 | We want to use the Jackie_jump_black_dress.
| | 00:37 | I am going to bring it down. And I might
want it to play for a little longer than
| | 00:41 | a few seconds, so I will just click,
hold, and drag it, as we learned in other
| | 00:44 | lessons. And here it is.
| | 00:47 | So now, I can click the Pan & Zoom tool
right here and it opens it up, and it's
| | 00:52 | basically telling me on Frame1, which
is here, I am going to have this and on
| | 00:57 | Frame2, I am going to have this.
| | 01:01 | So on Frame1, what if I want to do the opposite?
| | 01:03 | Well, I can click and drag this a
little bit. And it has got a plus and minus
| | 01:08 | button here, so I can click the minus button.
| | 01:10 | It shrinks it, once again, and once again.
| | 01:13 | I can also just go to
the edges here and drag it.
| | 01:17 | I might want to have it over her face
right here. And then the second frame, I
| | 01:21 | might want that to be big.
| | 01:23 | Now I can drag it up, press the plus
key once more, and we can click Done, and
| | 01:28 | now I have got it on her face. Nice
move, I can discuss how an amazing
| | 01:34 | ballerina she is, et cetera.
| | 01:35 | So the Pan & Zoom tool really can make
your photos come alive in Elements 10.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Adjusting the position, scale, and rotation of clips, and creating picture-in-picture effects| 00:00 | Adobe Elements 10 enables you to
control many aspects of your clip. So I've got
| | 00:05 | three clips here in my Timeline.
| | 00:06 | I have got a dance clip here--and I
will just move these over a little bit so
| | 00:10 | we can see them better.
| | 00:11 | Here is another dance clip. And then
the bottom layer, or my background, is this
| | 00:16 | lovely shot of the
handles on the gym room floor.
| | 00:18 | So I am going to press Command+Z to
move them back, Ctrl+Z on the PC, and I am
| | 00:23 | going to select my top clip. And now I
am going to go to Edit > Edit Effects, and
| | 00:28 | here is what's called the
Motion tab and the Opacity.
| | 00:31 | We are just going to talk about Motion for now.
| | 00:33 | Within the Motion tab is the Position,
the Scale, Scale Width, the Rotation,
| | 00:43 | and the Anchor Point.
| | 00:44 | Let's not worry about
the AntiFlicker filter now.
| | 00:47 | So I am going to start
off with the anchor point.
| | 00:48 | Now what is an anchor point?
| | 00:50 | An anchor point is the center of the world.
| | 00:53 | Basically it's like the sun.
| | 00:54 | It's where everything is going to go
around or be centrally located around, and
| | 00:58 | here is my anchor point on this
clip. It's a circle with crosshairs.
| | 01:03 | So if I choose Scale and I scale it
down--and we will make it bigger again or
| | 01:08 | actually I will go here and type
in 100%. And why is that important?
| | 01:12 | Well, if I go down into Rotation and
choose Rotate Left, everything is rotating
| | 01:18 | around the anchor point.
| | 01:19 | But what if I wanted the anchor point
to be in the corner here, so that it
| | 01:23 | rotated around this way?
| | 01:24 | So let's take a look.
| | 01:26 | So I am just going to scrub
this over, and we will go 250.
| | 01:34 | I could have also just typed in 250 right there.
| | 01:37 | So now looks like my footage has moved,
but the anchor point is the one that's
| | 01:41 | moved, so now if I just click and hold
my footage and drag it back, put it into
| | 01:45 | the middle, the footage is where it
should be, but the anchor point has moved
| | 01:49 | to the left. And if I go into my Rotate,
it's rotating to the left now around my anchor point.
| | 01:56 | That's the new center of the universe;
| | 01:58 | it's not in the middle here.
| | 02:00 | Now that might be important because
later on when you learn how to use
| | 02:04 | keyframes and you want to make
something spin or rotate or resize and you want
| | 02:10 | it to go from a specific area of your
video, you know how to use the anchor
| | 02:13 | point to move it there.
| | 02:14 | I am going to press Command+Z
to get us back to square one.
| | 02:19 | Now let's look at Scale for a moment.
| | 02:22 | I showed you how I scaled in
earlier, but why don't we use Scale and Position now.
| | 02:27 | So I am going to scale this down
to about 45%. And you know what?
| | 02:32 | I am going to drag this over here to
the right, and then I am going to select
| | 02:36 | the next clip underneath it, and I
am going to scale that down to 45%.
| | 02:43 | I am going to click and drag that one.
| | 02:45 | So, as you can see, as I have done this,
created this cool picture in picture,
| | 02:50 | keep an eye on this position number
here, so if I click on this in the viewer
| | 02:54 | and drag it around,
position number moves with it.
| | 02:57 | So you can either do that in the viewer
here, which is a little more intuitive
| | 03:02 | than using numbers, or use the numbers.
| | 03:04 | So now if I deselect, I've got this cool
little picture-in-picture thing playing,
| | 03:09 | and let's just press the
spacebar and see how it plays.
| | 03:11 | I can also turn it upside down if I
wanted to, so maybe the background is upside
| | 03:19 | down for some reason. Let's go back.
| | 03:22 | So as you can see, once you master
the Motion tab within the Effects window
| | 03:28 | inside the Edit > Effects Motion,
you will be able to make some great
| | 03:31 | picture-in-pictures and many other things.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Using the Tracker| 00:00 | So you have a nice clip with your
subject moving across the screen and you
| | 00:03 | would really love to attach
something to it, maybe some text or an arrow
| | 00:07 | pointing which way they're going, or
even a piece of video or a clipart--
| | 00:11 | whatever you'd like.
| | 00:12 | Well, Elements is great and lets you do this.
| | 00:15 | So I have this piece of footage of
this boat cruising across the water here,
| | 00:19 | and I need to let it know to watch out
for whales, so I might attach some text to it.
| | 00:23 | But first I want to track, so I'm
going to go here and select the clip and go
| | 00:28 | to this little icon and
choose Motion Tracking mode.
| | 00:32 | Now it's going to pop up this window
to ask you if you want to run the Auto
| | 00:35 | Analyzer to track moving objects.
| | 00:38 | Well, Adobe Elements lets you do a
lot of things automatically, and that's
| | 00:42 | pretty cool, but when you're tracking
something, what this will do is it will
| | 00:47 | track the boat right here;
| | 00:49 | it'll probably track the
buoy, if it's moving at all;
| | 00:51 | definitely the birds will have so many
tracking points it will be ridiculous.
| | 00:56 | So, on this particular
one we are going to say no.
| | 01:00 | So this brings up the Tracking mode
window. And now I need to add an object, so
| | 01:05 | I am going to click here to add a new
object, and we get this little box that has
| | 01:09 | got four circles. And yes, I
know what you are thinking.
| | 01:12 | They look like anchor points.
| | 01:13 | Well, they are not anchor points.
| | 01:15 | They are track points.
| | 01:17 | So we are going to select one, move it
over. And when you track something, you
| | 01:22 | really want to find something that's
noticeable, like the red here or the house
| | 01:28 | over here, something that's stable,
that's in throughout the shot, and the
| | 01:31 | tracker can really pick up on.
| | 01:33 | So I am going to start here, I am going
to go for the red, and we will just move
| | 01:37 | this over, and we are going to go
start from there and track the red.
| | 01:42 | Now, one thing you need to keep in mind
when you are tracking. You need to be at
| | 01:45 | 0, so make sure you are at
the beginning of your movie.
| | 01:49 | And now, I am just going to click
on Track Object and we are done.
| | 01:52 | So let's take a look at how that looks.
| | 01:57 | So, not bad. It's following it
along, stretching out a little bit.
| | 02:04 | It's not too bad of a track.
| | 02:05 | Okay, so let's stop that, and
let's go back. And you know what?
| | 02:11 | I really want it to have a better
track and I am going to try and track the
| | 02:14 | whole sail, so I am going to go back
into Tracking mode, click No again, and
| | 02:20 | anytime you have a track that you want
to get rid of--and this actually will
| | 02:23 | show you why we didn't run
Auto Analyzer because we would have had a ton of
| | 02:28 | these little yellow boxes.
| | 02:29 | So I select the box, and it turns
blue, I right-click, and I choose Delete
| | 02:35 | Selected Object. Now it's gone and
we have no more tracks, so we are going
| | 02:38 | to start from scratch.
| | 02:39 | So I am going to add an object, and
this time I'm going to the whole sail.
| | 02:45 | I will go here. Make it as tight as you can.
| | 02:55 | So we will do that.
Now I am going to track this.
| | 02:58 | And the tracker actually moves pretty
quickly. And now we are done, and let's
| | 03:02 | see what it looks like.
| | 03:06 | That's pretty good.
| | 03:07 | It's really capturing the
whole essence of the sail there.
| | 03:10 | So it's moving along with it
really well, not too many fluctuations.
| | 03:14 | I am feeling comfortable with
attaching something to that.
| | 03:17 | So let's attach some text.
| | 03:19 | So I am going to go back here. I am going to
click on the T for the Default Text tool.
| | 03:23 | Now don't worry about this.
| | 03:24 | We are going to cover text in a later
lesson. Just don't even pay attention to
| | 03:28 | me making this text right now.
| | 03:30 | So I am just going to write "Watch for whales!"
| | 03:36 | And I am going to make this a little
bit smaller, and now I am going to go back
| | 03:44 | into the Timeline and I am going
to select this Watch for whales!
| | 03:50 | text and I am going to
delete it, so it's not even there.
| | 03:54 | But if you look into the
Project panel, it's still there.
| | 03:56 | It says Title2, and I can change name
to whales by selecting it. And now I am
| | 04:04 | going to go back into the Tracker
panel by selecting my clip, choosing Motion
| | 04:07 | Tracking mode again, No, and I
see this is where my track is.
| | 04:12 | So I am going to make sure I am at 0, and
I am going to go into my Project panel,
| | 04:17 | click on the whales, hold and drag, and let go.
| | 04:22 | What do I want it to say? "Watch for whales!"? Yes, I do.
| | 04:24 | So click OK and now it's part of that.
So I can actually just click and hold it
| | 04:31 | and move it behind the boat, and it's a
little bit small in the viewer, but I
| | 04:37 | will make it a little bit
bigger and we will see what happens.
| | 04:41 | So now I keyframed it, I press play,
and this is one of those instances where
| | 04:52 | we've provided a ton of data to the
computer and it is just not processing in real
| | 04:57 | time, even though we've got
a pretty quick computer here.
| | 05:00 | So I am going to clean this up a
little bit by dragging the ends, so let me
| | 05:03 | press Enter, and we will render that out.
| | 05:05 | Okay, so we are done, and now you can
see the boats cruising along and the
| | 05:13 | text, Watch for whales! is following it.
| | 05:15 | So you can add all kinds of fun
things to your projects and attach them to
| | 05:21 | moving objects within the
videos, all in Elements 10.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Using the Effects Mask tool| 00:00 | So, what if you had an interview such
as the one we have here and you want to
| | 00:03 | apply a mask on her face?
| | 00:06 | You've seen it on TV before where they
have some kind of a key witness to the
| | 00:09 | murder or some celebrity that's
cheating on another one and you want to mask
| | 00:15 | them so you don't know exactly who it is.
| | 00:17 | So, that's pretty easy to do here in Elements.
| | 00:20 | Let's take a look how. So, I have this clip--
| | 00:22 | I'll just show you a little bit---
of her talking, and I want to mask her.
| | 00:27 | I don't want anyone knowing who she is.
| | 00:29 | So, I can right-click here on the clip,
go down, remember our right-click menu,
| | 00:35 | and down here it says Effects Mask, and
I'm going to Apply. And what that does is
| | 00:41 | it creates a duplicate of the clip, just
the video only, on another layer above,
| | 00:47 | and now this box here, whatever I choose
to put behind it is going to be masked.
| | 00:52 | So, let's go up here, and I want
to make sure I cover her face.
| | 00:56 | That's looking pretty good.
| | 00:58 | Let me just scroll through
this, and that looks good.
| | 01:05 | A person that you're masking, if they
move their heads back and forth or they
| | 01:08 | stand up, you have to do things like
keyframe, which we'll talk about later,
| | 01:12 | but on this particular one, she's
sitting down talking and we're just going to
| | 01:16 | mask her out.
| | 01:17 | So, let me go back to frame 0, and now
I'm going to go into my Edit Effects, and
| | 01:22 | inside of my effects I'm going to Video
Effects, and I'm going to look under the
| | 01:25 | Show All, and Stylize, and let me
just bring this down a little bit.
| | 01:31 | I am looking for Mosaic.
| | 01:34 | So, I could have easily just typed in
Mosaic here and it would have found it.
| | 01:38 | So I want to make sure that this
clip is selected, my mask, and here's a preview here.
| | 01:43 | So, we see that's what's going
to have an effect applied to.
| | 01:46 | I'm going to drag it onto the clip, and
now you can't see her. And we're going to
| | 01:51 | edit that a little bit and
clean it up a little bit.
| | 01:53 | So, I'm going to go into Mosaic. And
there're really only a couple of options
| | 01:59 | where I can change the horizontal or
the vertical blocks, so let's see what
| | 02:03 | that looks like.
| | 02:04 | If I bring it all the way up,
| | 02:05 | it doesn't do too much,
but just a little bit.
| | 02:07 | It adds a little more blockage.
And then this one, if I bring it too far, it
| | 02:12 | does some weird stuff.
| | 02:14 | So, we're just going to
leave it like about right there.
| | 02:17 | And Sharp Colors bring some of the
color through that make it sharp.
| | 02:20 | So, if you want that kind of a look,
you can. It looks like some ancient video
| | 02:23 | game, but we're not going to do that.
| | 02:26 | So, once again you'll see the red line.
That means we might have to render this.
| | 02:30 | Let's press play and see what happens.
| | 02:31 | (Female speaker: It's interesting because with
BDN it's a sort of duality.)
| | 02:35 | So, that's not such a demanding
effect, and it's only to a small area, that I
| | 02:39 | don't really need to render this,
but if you want to or your computer is
| | 02:43 | playing slow, then you can just press
the Enter button and it will render this
| | 02:47 | out, but as we can see--
| | 02:51 | (Female speaker:--having youth help youth. So it's--)
| | 02:52 | --we have her totally covered.
| | 02:53 | So, adding an effects mask onto your
footage is easy to do in Elements 10.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Videomerge and Green Screen| 00:00 | So we've all heard of green screen out there.
| | 00:02 | You hear it on the big movies,
green screen this, green screen that.
| | 00:05 | Well, when people shoot in front of
green screens or blue screens, you are using
| | 00:10 | this because you want to
cut this green screen out--
| | 00:13 | it's easy to cut out because it's a
solid color--and you wanted to just show the person.
| | 00:18 | So, Premiere Elements has a very
simple fix for this called Video Merge and as
| | 00:23 | long as you have something that's
pretty well lit, which this really isn't, but
| | 00:29 | it is still going to work.
| | 00:30 | We've got some shadows over here.
| | 00:31 | It should be really lit evenly,
but we're going to make it work.
| | 00:34 | So, I'm going to click on my file and
really quickly, I have this file of her and
| | 00:39 | then below it is a background of a
piano that I thought would be kind of cool.
| | 00:43 | So, I'm going to click on it, I'm going
to right-click, and I'm going to choose
| | 00:48 | Apply Videomerge, and click the button
and Video Merge just goes in automatically,
| | 00:54 | takes out all the green,
and it's looking pretty good.
| | 00:57 | If you need something quick, down,
and dirty, this is pretty good.
| | 01:01 | I'm going to press the Enter
button just to render this really quick.
| | 01:06 | And now we'll press play, and it's not too bad.
| | 01:10 | I mean if you look really carefully, if
you know what you're looking for, I can
| | 01:13 | see some kind of ghosting up here,
because the green completely come out.
| | 01:18 | You select the clip and choose Edit
and you look at the video right here,
| | 01:22 | you'll see right here the green didn't come out.
| | 01:25 | So, it's got its limitations, but if
you're looking for something that's just
| | 01:29 | ready to go out of the box and will
provide a pretty decent job, Video Merge is
| | 01:33 | going to do it for you.
| | 01:35 | If you've got something more difficult
then you really should consider moving
| | 01:38 | up to something like a Premiere Pro,
that's got a lot more advanced keying
| | 01:43 | instruments in it.
| | 01:45 | Now, there is another fix that we could do.
| | 01:48 | We can go into Video Effects, and
then we're going to look under Keying, and
| | 01:53 | Elements ships with something called a
garbage matte, and garbage mattes are just
| | 01:58 | helping us get rid of things
that we don't want in our video.
| | 02:01 | So, I'm going to choose this Four-
Point Garbage Matte just to start out with.
| | 02:06 | I'm going to drag it up there, and now
we're going to click on Edit Effects, and
| | 02:12 | here's my garbage matte.
| | 02:13 | So, if I select it here in the Edit menu,
what I can do is I've got those four
| | 02:18 | handles again like the tracker and
like the anchor point, they are the same
| | 02:22 | symbol, but these are going to
allow me to tighten up that videomerge.
| | 02:26 | So, I'm going to grab this and I don't
want to go too far, because that happens.
| | 02:32 | She becomes the invisible woman.
| | 02:33 | So, I'm just going to go as
close as I can to her head.
| | 02:36 | I'm going to make sure
this still lets her be shown.
| | 02:39 | And you've to be careful because if
she waves her hands out or whatever,
| | 02:43 | it's going to disappear.
| | 02:44 | Then we'll grab this corner one.
| | 02:46 | We'll clean that up a little bit. And
last but not least, we'll bring this one in.
| | 02:52 | And then I'm going to render that again.
| | 02:59 | So, now since that ghosting, that
artifact that I had, is outside of this mask,
| | 03:04 | we don't see it anymore.
| | 03:05 | It's gone and I'll turn off the mask
just for a second, and here it is again.
| | 03:10 | You can see it's kind of fuzzy.
You see it up here.
| | 03:12 | If I put it on, it's gone.
| | 03:15 | There's also, if I go back into the
effects, an Eight-Point Garbage Matte, so we
| | 03:20 | can detail it even more,
| | 03:22 | if we want to bring it in here.
It's just a lot more precise as well.
| | 03:25 | So, it's something quick and dirty like
this and then taking some time to use the
| | 03:30 | garbage mattes to clean them out.
| | 03:32 | So, doing green screen in Premiere
Elements is not hard at all and lots of fun to do.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Creating and using effect presets| 00:00 | So, I have this clip here of the
downtown and I want to add that cartoon,
| | 00:05 | because I'm just into that cartoon look.
| | 00:07 | So, I'm going to go into my Effects,
and do the dropdown menu and look for it,
| | 00:12 | but it's already there. So, I'm going to
choose that and get a little bit of real estate.
| | 00:16 | So, let's drag this down. And here it is.
| | 00:19 | I want to drag it onto my footage.
| | 00:21 | I can also go down onto the actual clip,
but I'll just go here. And that looks
| | 00:25 | really cool, like, I really
wish I could draw like that.
| | 00:28 | Let's just play that for a second.
| | 00:30 | Pretty fun!
| | 00:34 | Now, if I click on the clip and go
into the Edit Effects and click my down
| | 00:38 | arrow, I can see that I have this other
toggle box, and if I go down, there are
| | 00:43 | all these different types of
presets that were already made for me.
| | 00:48 | So, we're on Animation now,
but what is Hallucination?
| | 00:51 | Well, yeah, I can kind of see
that's a hallucination right there.
| | 00:55 | Pencil Test.
| | 00:57 | Okay, that's kind of cool too.
| | 00:59 | Really Bad Dream, now that's fun.
| | 01:01 | Oh, that looks crazy.
| | 01:03 | I'm going to just scroll over that.
| | 01:04 | Yeah, I don't think I've
had some dreams like that.
| | 01:06 | I want to go back to Animation because
I just kind of like that one, but I want
| | 01:11 | to do some changes on it.
| | 01:13 | So, I'm going to toggle down my lines.
| | 01:16 | I'm going to make my lines
have a little more density.
| | 01:20 | So, I'm going to just drag this over,
let go, and I've got little more density.
| | 01:26 | Maybe the Width, I'd like
them to be a little bigger.
| | 01:29 | See them getting bigger right there?
And I'm going to leave the rest alone.
| | 01:36 | And now I'm going to go into Paint.
| | 01:39 | So, maybe I want
smoothness to be a little better,
| | 01:42 | so I'll add that.
| | 01:45 | That's a little nicer.
| | 01:46 | So, that's great.
| | 01:47 | So, I'm pretty happy with that, but
what if the next scene I decide I want
| | 01:54 | the cartoon look on there too?
| | 01:55 | So, I would have to actually go back
into my Effects and drag it on here,
| | 02:01 | and you know what?
| | 02:02 | It's going to be a different effect
than the first one, because I'd changed it.
| | 02:07 | So, what can I do?
| | 02:08 | I'm going to go back into my first one.
| | 02:11 | Notice the presets say None now
| | 02:13 | because I took the animation, I did
some changes, so it no longer was its own
| | 02:18 | preset like it came with the box.
| | 02:20 | But if I right-click here, I can
choose Save Preset. And I'm going to change
| | 02:26 | this to Dave's Cartoon Look and
leave this to default and press OK.
| | 02:35 | Now, when I go to my next clip and
select it and go to Edit > Effect, I can do the
| | 02:43 | dropdown menu, actually right here
where it says Video Effect, and look for My
| | 02:48 | Presets. And guess what?
There's Dave's Cartoon Look.
| | 02:53 | Now, I just need to click and drag it
on here or onto the footage and now this
| | 02:58 | matches the first clip.
| | 03:02 | All the things I did in the first
clip are exactly the same, the lines and everything.
| | 03:09 | So, this is going to come in really
handy as you start to add a lot of effects
| | 03:13 | or color correct and you want the
color to be standard throughout the movie.
| | 03:17 | You want to start creating your own
presets and saving them, and the good news
| | 03:22 | is you can always go back to them
later and add them to other projects.
| | 03:25 | Now, let's check out one
more way that I can do that.
| | 03:29 | So, I'm going to look for some other
footage, this little clip right here
| | 03:33 | and add it there.
| | 03:34 | So, this has nothing on it.
| | 03:36 | I want to add some stuff on here,
| | 03:39 | so I'm going to right-click and
choose Copy, and then I'm going to click on
| | 03:44 | this clip and choose Paste
Attributes, and let's see what happens.
| | 03:49 | Well, there it is.
| | 03:51 | Now if I select that clip, go into
my Edit window, choose Edit Effect,
| | 03:57 | there's my Cartoon Plus right there.
| | 04:00 | It has all the presets because it
says None. It doesn't say Dave's Cartoon,
| | 04:04 | but it is that.
| | 04:05 | So, this is yet another way to add
the same effect to multiple clips within the Timeline.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Making color adjustments using effects| 00:00 | Now, as we're getting close to being
done with your movie and you want to make
| | 00:03 | your movies pop out, I
highly suggest color correcting.
| | 00:07 | So, while this is a really nice shot,
the footage is really kind of blah.
| | 00:12 | I mean the colors are muted.
| | 00:13 | I don't if it was a cloudy day or not,
but it just doesn't really excite me at all.
| | 00:18 | So, what should I do? Well, I'm going to go into
my Edit menu and look at my effects, and I'm going to
| | 00:24 | choose my Color Correction effects.
| | 00:28 | And I've got two options: the
AutoTone and Vibrance and the new Three-Way
| | 00:33 | Color Corrector.
| | 00:34 | This one, as you can see in the name,
does an automatic fix for you, and you can
| | 00:39 | do some tweaks, but it really
does it all for you in one shot.
| | 00:42 | If you're more courageous, you can
really go and make your own unique looks
| | 00:47 | using the Three-Way Color Corrector.
| | 00:49 | So, let's take a look at both of them.
| | 00:51 | I'm just going to select them and drag
it onto my footage. I can also drag it
| | 00:55 | down here, but I'm just going to drag
it there. And right away you see that the
| | 00:59 | greens really came up and the reds
here, and it pops things out a lot more.
| | 01:05 | AutoTone affects the brightness, the
contrast, the exposure, the blacks and the
| | 01:11 | whites, which are shadows and
highlights, and it does it all automatically.
| | 01:15 | Now, I can select my clip as I can
other effects and go in there, and if you
| | 01:20 | notice, if I turn it off, we're back to
that same muted look. But we can really
| | 01:26 | see how by turning it on and having
that as part of your clip, it changes the
| | 01:30 | colors dramatically.
| | 01:31 | There're also some dropdowns here,
so I can really tweak the Vibrance a little more.
| | 01:39 | I can change my brightness, contrast,
and exposure, and my blacks, and my whites.
| | 01:45 | But I like that.
| | 01:46 | It's all Auto, and I'm in a hurry,
so I'm going to leave that alone.
| | 01:50 | Also keep in mind I can right-click
here and make a preset, as we did before.
| | 01:55 | So, that is how that works.
| | 01:57 | Now, let me toggle this off for a minute,
change it back, and go back into the Effects.
| | 02:02 | Let's try the Three-Way Color Corrector now.
| | 02:05 | I'm going to drag it on, and
nothing happened, but it's there.
| | 02:08 | I can see it right here.
| | 02:09 | So, I'm going to click on Effects, and
let's start to do some changes here.
| | 02:16 | So, now if I choose the Preview Tonal
Ranges and select that, I can see all
| | 02:21 | these items, and what does this mean?
| | 02:23 | It looks kind of crazy, right,
or the cartoon look again? No.
| | 02:26 | What this is showing me is a
preview of the tonal ranges.
| | 02:30 | The tonal ranges are the grays,
whites, blacks, or midtones, highlights,
| | 02:36 | and shadows.
| | 02:37 | So, they're all color coordinated here.
| | 02:39 | The gray are all my midtones.
| | 02:42 | Then the highlights, or maybe that's
where the sun shining or there's light there,
| | 02:46 | are my whites. As we can see,
there's not a whole lot right there.
| | 02:49 | My shadows, however, I've got a lot of shadows.
| | 02:53 | So, I can manipulate all of those.
| | 02:55 | So, I'm going to uncheck that, and
now I know what I'm working with.
| | 02:57 | I'm going to go into my grays, and this
would look a lot better if it was maybe a
| | 03:03 | little bit of a warmer day.
| | 03:05 | So first, what I'm going to
do is set my Gray Balance.
| | 03:08 | So, let's look at some type of a
midtone here, and I'll take the eyedropper. And
| | 03:14 | I'm going to select this kind of a brown color.
| | 03:17 | That's my balance.
| | 03:19 | And now I'm going to start to
move around and change this.
| | 03:22 | And you see if I go to an extreme, in any
direction, it really tweaks it out and
| | 03:29 | makes it an odd color.
| | 03:30 | So, you really want to go just subtly.
| | 03:33 | So, I'm going to go a little bit
warmer there. And if I want to saturate it a
| | 03:38 | little more, I've got areas to do it down here.
| | 03:42 | Midtones Balance Magnitude, my
Gain, and my Saturation is down here.
| | 03:47 | So, you can really, really geek out
and have a lot of control over what you're doing.
| | 03:52 | So, we'll leave those alone for right
now, and let's check out highlights.
| | 03:57 | Now I do see, if I click on it once again, I really
have only got a couple of highlights.
| | 04:02 | I've got white selected.
| | 04:04 | So, I'm going to leave the Highlights alone.
| | 04:06 | They're not really something that's
bothering me, but I might look at my shadows
| | 04:09 | and see if I can do something with
them and bring them up a little bit.
| | 04:12 | So, I'm going to click on the shadows
and if I go extreme, you can see they
| | 04:17 | start changing colors.
| | 04:18 | So, now what if I wanted to go a little
bit maybe greenish blue and did that?
| | 04:25 | And if I went down here and maybe
upped my Saturation just a little bit.
| | 04:29 | So, that's kind of a unique look.
| | 04:31 | It's definitely not that flat look that
I had before, but actually now looking
| | 04:35 | at, it reminds me of 1970s horror movies.
| | 04:38 | Let's turn it off for a moment.
| | 04:41 | There is that muted look. Turn it back on.
| | 04:44 | We've got more reds, the greens look
a little better, the sky looks different.
| | 04:48 | So, you can see how you can make
your own looks using the Three-Way Color
| | 04:52 | Corrector. And once again, I can click
on it, Save Preset, and go in add it to a
| | 04:58 | future clip so that they're all matching.
| | 05:00 | So, as we can see, in Elements, you can
have a quick fix like this and you can
| | 05:06 | also create a unique look.
| | 05:08 | In any case, Elements really gives
you a lot of power color correcting
| | 05:12 | your movies.

6. Animating Effects and ClipsUnderstanding animation| 00:00 | Adding animations to your clips may
sound like a daunting process, but by
| | 00:04 | learning the basic concepts,
you're going to be a master in no time.
| | 00:08 | So what animation is is the process of
making things do something, whether it's
| | 00:13 | moving left to right from A to B, rotating,
| | 00:17 | going in and out of opacity or scaling.
| | 00:20 | Now let's say I want to move something
from this side of the screen to the left.
| | 00:24 | Let's find something to move.
| | 00:26 | I'm going to go into my Edit menu and
look in to the Clip Art. Elements ships
| | 00:32 | with a lot of clipart, and I'm going
to choose something like this wonderful
| | 00:35 | little bunny, and drag it on, and here it is.
| | 00:40 | What if I want to make the
bunny go from right to left?
| | 00:43 | Well, let's go into the Edit menu,
and we'll choose Effects, and then
| | 00:49 | we'll choose Edit Effects.
| | 00:52 | The process of doing
that is creating a keyframe.
| | 00:56 | We're going to have to do this
quite often if you want to animate.
| | 01:00 | So the process of that--I'm just
going to expand this a little bit.
| | 01:02 | If I want to go from this point in
time to this point in time, I have to change values.
| | 01:08 | I've go to have a value set here, in
the beginning, and then if I go here and I
| | 01:13 | move him to left side, the value is
changed his position within the frame here.
| | 01:18 | So now if I move back, nothing is going
on, because I haven't set any keyframes.
| | 01:23 | Let's go back to 1.
| | 01:25 | So in order to do that, I need to down
arrow the Motion tab here. And on the
| | 01:30 | far right you'll see this stopwatch,
and that stopwatch means Show Keyframes,
| | 01:36 | so I'm going to click on that.
| | 01:38 | Now I can change its Rotation, Opacity.
Let me just bring this down a little bit,
| | 01:44 | because I really don't need to
go into the Timeline anymore.
| | 01:47 | I can do all of my animations right here.
| | 01:50 | I can change his Position, Scale,
Rotation, Anchor Point, by selecting the toggle
| | 01:57 | animation button, and it
looks like a little stopwatch.
| | 01:59 | So remember, if you can see the
stopwatch, that means something can be animated.
| | 02:03 | And we'll click on that.
| | 02:05 | Elements wants to help you out so bad
that it creates your first keyframe for
| | 02:10 | you, so you only have to do a
second one to get things moving.
| | 02:13 | So what this is telling us here is
that at frame0--we're up here at frame0--
| | 02:20 | Elements has said, okay we're setting a
position keyframe here, and these are the
| | 02:25 | numbers that it's at.
| | 02:26 | It's at this scale, its rotation is 0
right here, its anchor point is this
| | 02:34 | number, and that's all locked
into these little keyframes here.
| | 02:39 | Let me go ahead in time.
| | 02:41 | Let's go to about right here.
And the rabbit is going to jump, right,
| | 02:45 | because rabbits jump.
| | 02:46 | So if I grab this and bring him in
the area right here, this has created a
| | 02:53 | position keyframe, because I moved his
position from this area to up here, and
| | 02:59 | Elements creates a keyframe right here,
or a diamond I call them. So it said at
| | 03:05 | this point we've moved the rabbit to that.
| | 03:08 | Now let's go back to 1.
| | 03:10 | Here we're at this position, and if we
go to this next keyframe button and click
| | 03:14 | it, it'll take you to the next one. And
see, our numbers have changed. Nothing
| | 03:19 | else has changed, because we
didn't do any changes to them.
| | 03:21 | And if you see this dotted line here,
well that's called a motion path.
| | 03:27 | It went from this keyframe to
that keyframe and this is the path it
| | 03:31 | took, straight ahead.
| | 03:33 | Now what if I wanted to change the path?
| | 03:35 | Well, I can go back one and I can
either click here to create a new
| | 03:40 | keyframe or I can simply go in the
viewer and drag him down. So maybe he has
| | 03:44 | got like a little weird hop.
| | 03:46 | So, he hops up fast and then lands. So
let's go back to 1, and I'm just going to
| | 03:52 | press the spacebar to play. So the
bunny rabbit jumped up, and it actually
| | 03:57 | looked pretty smooth.
| | 03:59 | So now he's stuck up there.
| | 04:01 | I'm going to go ahead in time a little
bit and I'm going to add another keyframe
| | 04:06 | right here. And this keyframe, because
I didn't make any changes, is going to
| | 04:12 | keep the same value as the previous keyframe.
| | 04:15 | Let's take look.
| | 04:16 | We're at 397:130 and if I go back,
we're at 397:130, so let's go ahead.
| | 04:23 | Now why did I do that?
| | 04:24 | Because he jumped up and paused for a
second, and now he is going to jump down.
| | 04:29 | So I'm going to go to the end of my
animation and I'm just going to drag the
| | 04:34 | rabbit down to the ground.
| | 04:37 | It added my next keyframe.
| | 04:39 | Let's go back to 1, press the spacebar,
he jumps up, he pauses, and now he jumps down.
| | 04:45 | So as you can see, you need more then
one keyframe to do an animation, and you
| | 04:53 | can have a lot of keyframes to make
the animation do different things.
| | 04:58 | Well, maybe I don't want
him to stay up here that long.
| | 05:02 | Let me just select that keyframe.
| | 05:04 | I can go into the next keyframe,
click and hold, and I can drag it in.
| | 05:10 | So now he doesn't stay there that long.
And let's go to the last keyframe.
| | 05:15 | Maybe this is too long for him to jump.
He is jumping really slow. After all, he
| | 05:19 | is a rabbit, he is pretty fast, so I
want to drag this and bring it over quite a
| | 05:24 | bit, and let see how that pays out.
| | 05:26 | Let's press the spacebar. He jumps
up and then boom, quick jump down.
| | 05:32 | So keyframe animation is essential to
making things move in Elements, to making
| | 05:38 | effects do different things.
| | 05:40 | Maybe you want an effect to happen at
the beginning of a clip and then you want
| | 05:43 | to keyframe it out or make it do
something different in another point in time.
| | 05:48 | And we're going to get really into
this in the next few videos, but keyframe
| | 05:52 | animation in Elements is easy
to learn and lots of fun to do.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Animating video effects| 00:00 | As I said in the last movie, keyframes
are essential, and we're going to do some
| | 00:04 | more keyframes now, but we're
going to do them to a video effect.
| | 00:08 | So I've got some footage here, and I'll
just press the play button. And I think
| | 00:14 | this would be really cool in my video
if I had more like a line drawing or even
| | 00:19 | a cartoony kind of thing.
| | 00:21 | I am going to do line drawing.
| | 00:23 | So with the clip selected, I'm going to
go into Edit and then Effects, and in the
| | 00:28 | Effects, instead of going through all
of these, I'm just going to go in here,
| | 00:32 | search bar, and type in line, and
that's going to bring up my Line Drawing
| | 00:38 | effect and we'll just drag that on. And
as you see, it's looks pretty cool, like
| | 00:42 | a blueprint almost or something
really cool. So I want to change colors.
| | 00:47 | So I am going to select it.
| | 00:48 | I am going to go into Edit Effects and
you see it down here, Line Drawing. So I
| | 00:55 | want that window that shows me the keyframes.
| | 00:57 | I am going to click on it and
now I can see the window here.
| | 01:02 | I like to do that.
| | 01:03 | That's my workflow, because I want
this all to be close by when I'm working.
| | 01:07 | I don't want to go back down tp the Timeline.
| | 01:09 | I want to be right here.
| | 01:11 | So now with my line drawing selected, I
am going to click the Toggle animation.
| | 01:17 | This gives me some options. Do I want
the paper to be a certain color, the ink
| | 01:22 | to be a certain color, and I can
choose to change the density as well.
| | 01:26 | So now let's go from here, and I am
just going to go into the middle more or
| | 01:31 | less. And I want the ink to stay black,
but now as it goes out, I want 9it to
| | 01:38 | change to a different color.
| | 01:40 | I want to choose like a blue. Click on
this color icon within the ink and it
| | 01:45 | brings up my color picker, and I am
going to look around for a nice blue,
| | 01:50 | something like that. Click OK.
| | 01:53 | So, now as I play this, and we'll
press the play button, it goes from that
| | 02:02 | and then it's going to hold for a
little bit, and now it's going to turn blue.
| | 02:07 | And now it's blue.
| | 02:09 | So I've animated the color
going from black to blue.
| | 02:14 | You can do the same thing for the paper.
So I am going to go into the middle
| | 02:18 | here, keyframe the paper, go ahead a little bit.
| | 02:23 | I am going to change the paper now.
Because it's blue, we'll do something kind
| | 02:28 | of fun like a weird red here. And let's
go back to 1, and we'll press play, so
| | 02:34 | I'm going from that color
to red, and there is the blue.
| | 02:45 | Now, we have a lot of effects here.
And let's just go back into this Effects panel.
| | 02:50 | There is so many effects here.
| | 02:52 | Every one of them can be animated, so
I'll go in there and start playing with
| | 02:56 | the different things that you can do,
like here's noise, so we can add
| | 02:59 | some crazy noise to this.
| | 03:01 | Let's drag that on, and now I've got some
noise. And I am going to edit my effects
| | 03:05 | again and go down to noise, toggle my
noise animation and I've got keyframes
| | 03:13 | there now. And at the beginning I'm
going to lower the amount of noise. As you
| | 03:21 | see, it plays on, it gets a lot
noisier, and then it's really noisy.
| | 03:26 | So go in there, be creative, and
try out the different effects.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Using keyframes with motion effects| 00:00 | So now that you're a keyframe master,
let's take a look at how to animate some
| | 00:04 | more motion, as we did in the
first exercise within this chapter.
| | 00:09 | So I've two clips here, some dancing.
Underneath it is the dance studio.
| | 00:15 | I'm going to right-click here and delete
and close my gap. And I think it'd be cool
| | 00:21 | if this footage came spinning in and
scaling from 0% to 50% in this corner here,
| | 00:28 | so I'm going to do that.
That's my little intro animation.
| | 00:32 | I am going to choose
that clip by clicking on it.
| | 00:35 | I lam going to go into Edit > Edit
Effects, and now I'm going to down arrow the motion.
| | 00:41 | And what do I like to do?
| | 00:42 | Well, I like to click on my Show
Keyframes button, because I want to do my
| | 00:46 | work up here.
| | 00:48 | So I want to give myself a little
room to work, and I'm going to choose
| | 00:52 | Toggle animation.
| | 00:55 | So now I've got all my animation going.
And if I move, you see I am moving my
| | 01:00 | keyframe. But I don't want to do that.
| | 01:03 | I am going to press Command+Z to go
back Ctrl+Z. What I want to do is scale.
| | 01:10 | I can scale here in the middle, but
I want to scale up here on the side,
| | 01:13 | so I am going to scale down to what I
think is a good size, and I'm going to
| | 01:18 | stop right there.
| | 01:19 | Now I'm going to select this and go
up to this area, and that's where I want
| | 01:26 | this to stop.
| | 01:28 | So what I can do now is go to my end
of my video and in the Position area I'm
| | 01:33 | going to click on Add Keyframe.
And now this keyframe has this position.
| | 01:41 | So my beginning and end, it's
going to stay in the same position.
| | 01:44 | So now I've got a scale, so I'm going
to go down here to 0 and maybe about right here,
| | 01:54 | let's type in 40%, and there it is.
| | 01:58 | Now let's just take a look at that. I'll
press the spacebar, and we're going to
| | 02:04 | go from nothing to them dancing, a
nice picture-in-picture, and everything
| | 02:11 | looks great!
| | 02:13 | So now let's add little spin to it, literally.
| | 02:15 | I am going to go here and make a
keyframe for my rotation, but I already have
| | 02:21 | one, right, because I turned on my
Toggle animation. So I am going to go to
| | 02:26 | about right here and I am
going to start rotating.
| | 02:30 | Now I can just do it here and click
on it or I can move it. So let's just
| | 02:33 | click on in it.
| | 02:34 | I want to go one time,
so that's one time 360 degrees.
| | 02:43 | That's two times 360 degrees, so
let's take a look at that.
| | 02:46 | We'll go back to 0, and let's press
the spacebar, and here it is. Extra,
| | 02:52 | extra, read all about it.
| | 02:53 | There is dancing at the Santa
Barbara Dance Arts Academy.
| | 02:56 | So as you get more and more into
animation, you can see that it really brings
| | 03:01 | your movies to life when you move things around.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Working with keyframes directly in the Timeline| 00:00 | Elements gives us yet another way to
add keyframes and make things move, and
| | 00:05 | that's in the Timeline.
| | 00:07 | So we got two pieces of footage here,
everybody dancing actually, and then
| | 00:12 | I will move over and we will see
underneath this this nice pan shot of Santa Barbara.
| | 00:17 | And I am going to right-
click and Delete and Close Gap.
| | 00:20 | I want to fade in first of all from
this, so I am going to select this footage.
| | 00:28 | And actually I need a little bit of
room to work here, so if I right-click off
| | 00:33 | to the side and do a Track Size,
I am going to choose Medium.
| | 00:38 | Now you might not see
this down arrow right here.
| | 00:41 | This is Opacity. So if your footage
is closed like that, you might not see
| | 00:45 | anything, but let's spread it out a little bit,
| | 00:47 | a little zoom, and I have got room now to work.
| | 00:51 | Keep in mind, you see this yellow bar?
Well, we are going to be using that
| | 00:55 | quite a bit.
| | 00:56 | So first I have Opacity, so I select
the yellow bar, I go back to frame 1, which
| | 01:02 | I am at, all right, Add/Remove a keyframe.
| | 01:05 | I am going to add a keyframe, and there it is.
| | 01:07 | I am going to go ahead maybe
right there and I'm going to add a
| | 01:12 | second keyframe.
| | 01:14 | And I am going to zoom out just a
little more, give me some more room.
| | 01:16 | And what did I say before?
| | 01:18 | We needed two keyframes to do an animation.
| | 01:21 | So we've got them.
| | 01:22 | So now I can go over that first keyframe,
click and select it, and drag it down,
| | 01:28 | and my bar turns blue, which means I
am doing something. And as you see the
| | 01:33 | numbers, well, I am going
from 100% Opacity down to 0.
| | 01:40 | And now let's go back, and
here's the footage underneath.
| | 01:43 | Let's press play. A nice little fade-in.
| | 01:47 | So I think when they are done with
their little dance, we are going to
| | 01:52 | transition this video into a picture-in-picture.
| | 01:56 | So let me go back a little bit.
| | 01:57 | So right about here, I'm going to look
at my arrow here and choose Position.
| | 02:07 | I can't do anything here. Why not?
| | 02:09 | Because I need to click on the yellow bar.
| | 02:12 | Now I can do this.
| | 02:13 | I want to add a keyframe right there at
that position, and we are going to come
| | 02:18 | back to Position in a second.
| | 02:20 | So now I am going to scale,
so let's go back to Scale.
| | 02:23 | I am going to select the Scale and press
Add Keyframe, so I have got a keyframe
| | 02:28 | right there for Scale. And I'm going to go
ahead a little bit here and I'm going
| | 02:34 | to add a second keyframe.
| | 02:36 | So now I am over my second keyframe
and you see the 100 value, so that means
| | 02:41 | I'm at 100% scale.
| | 02:44 | So I went up. Everything is zoomed in.
| | 02:47 | I am going to press
Command+Z to undo, Ctrl+Z on the PC.
| | 02:50 | Let me move my Time Indicator.
| | 02:52 | We go from 100 and see, it goes to 0,
so I am just going to get on the 27,
| | 02:59 | because I don't have much of real estate here.
| | 03:02 | Now I can also go to my Time
Indicator right there and select this and do it manually.
| | 03:10 | And if I hover over here, you see I am at 49%.
| | 03:15 | So we have got our fade-in, and then
we zoom in, and now we are going to move
| | 03:22 | it into the corner.
| | 03:24 | So let's go back to that position keyframe.
| | 03:26 | So we already have one.
| | 03:28 | So I want to add a second one now.
| | 03:31 | On this particular one, I am just
going to hold down and drag this into the
| | 03:34 | corner, and I've added my second keyframe.
| | 03:38 | We have a new position, and now
let's play this animation out.
| | 03:43 | Fade in, they are doing their dance,
and now we are going to start zooming in
| | 03:51 | and going into a nice picture-in-picture.
| | 03:56 | And we can add rotations and all kinds
of things, so you really have a lot of
| | 04:01 | options to add your keyframes and
make things move in Elements 10.
| | Collapse this transcript |

|
7. Create, Add, Edit, and Mix AudioRecording voiceovers and narration| 00:00 | So you just edited your amazing
video of Junior's first baseball game.
| | 00:05 | So why not add some play by play.
| | 00:07 | Well, that's easy to do by
adding voiceovers in Elements.
| | 00:11 | Let's take a look.
| | 00:12 | So down here I have got my little
intro Santa Barbara footage into my
| | 00:16 | dancing, and I am going to welcome
people to Santa Barbara and to get ready
| | 00:21 | for the performance.
| | 00:22 | So we go up here into this little speaker icon.
| | 00:26 | It's the audio tools.
| | 00:27 | We are going to click down, and there
are four things that we are going to look
| | 00:30 | at, but in this particular video, we
are going to talk about Add Narration.
| | 00:34 | So we are going to let that be
selected, and this brings up the Record Voice
| | 00:39 | Narration box, and you should be
seeing some kind of a waveform here.
| | 00:44 | We are not seeing it here at lynda.com.
| | 00:46 | We have a pretty complex system,
but I do know that it's being recorded.
| | 00:50 | So if you're not seen it, you might
want to go up into Preferences and then
| | 00:55 | choose Audio Hardware. And through the
dropdown box here, this particular one, we
| | 01:01 | are using Built-in Digital Input/Built-
in Line Output, you may want to check out
| | 01:06 | Built-in Line Input/Built-in Output.
| | 01:10 | But definitely play around with these
until you find the right one, and click OK,
| | 01:16 | and you should see this moving.
| | 01:18 | Now this moves and it's too red, we get
a lot of red up here, your volume levels
| | 01:23 | are too high, and you want to use
the slider here to move them around.
| | 01:26 | Okay, and that's it.
| | 01:28 | Once you have all this set up, you just
need to press the red button to record.
| | 01:32 | This is the play/pause narration.
| | 01:35 | This button here goes to the previous
narration clip, and this one goes to the
| | 01:41 | next narration clip. So if you have a lot
of narrations in your Timeline, it lets
| | 01:44 | you go into all those and test them out.
| | 01:46 | And in this of course is the trash, so
if you hate everything, you can delete
| | 01:51 | it right here.
| | 01:52 | This button here lets you choose
different Mic Sources, so we only have one
| | 01:56 | currently, but you might have something
plugged into your computer through one
| | 02:00 | of the ports, and this is
where you can find all that.
| | 02:03 | So make sure that you are in the
area of the clip that you want to start
| | 02:07 | narrating and then just press the red
button to start narration, and 3, 2, 1.
| | 02:15 | Hello and welcome to Santa Barbara,
where today we are going to see some amazing
| | 02:20 | dancing from the Santa Barbara Dance Company.
| | 02:23 | So let's get back in our
seats and get ready to go.
| | 02:26 | And then I'm going to pres Stop.
| | 02:27 | And as you can see, it goes
automatically into the narration track in the
| | 02:33 | Timeline, and we will scroll back,
and let's press play and listen to it.
| | 02:39 | (David Basulto: Hello and welcome to Santa Barbara,
where today we are going to see some amazing)
| | 02:44 | (dancing from the Santa Barbara Dance Company.)
| | 02:46 | (So let's get back in our
seats and get ready to go.)
| | 02:50 | And that's it.
| | 02:51 | So I can also go down here and grab the
clip by just selecting it and clicking
| | 02:55 | on it and holding, and I can drag it around.
| | 02:58 | So if I really wanted to start a little
further in, maybe I have got a fade-in
| | 03:03 | over here so I just want people to
get warm and fuzzy about the street there
| | 03:06 | and then my talking starts.
| | 03:08 | (David: Hello and welcome to Santa Barbara,
where today we are going to see some amazing)
| | 03:13 | (dancing from the Santa Barbara Dance Company.)
| | 03:16 | (So let's get back in our
seats and get ready to go.)
| | 03:19 | And that's it. It really is that simple to add
voice narration in Premiere Elements 10.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Using SmartSound for great music soundtracks| 00:00 | So we just finished our narration track,
and to be quite honest with you, it's
| | 00:04 | a little bit boring when I hear just
myself speaking and no other sounds or anything.
| | 00:08 | (David Basulto: Hello and welcome to Santa Barbara.)
| | 00:11 | Maybe if I was giving a lecture on Santa
Barbara, but this is not going to work
| | 00:15 | for me, so I want to add some music or a score.
| | 00:19 | So first thing I am going to do is
make a little note of how long my clip is,
| | 00:24 | these two clips together.
| | 00:25 | So, I am going to go out to the end,
and we are looking at like 56 seconds and 17 frames.
| | 00:32 | And that's the number right here.
| | 00:33 | So we will just make a note of that.
| | 00:35 | Now I want to move my Current Time
Indicator all the way back to 1, because I
| | 00:40 | want my music to start here.
| | 00:42 | I could move it in the middle and it
will start there, but on this particular
| | 00:46 | take, we want it to be right there.
| | 00:49 | And now, the magic is going to happen.
| | 00:50 | We just need to click on our
Audio tools and select SmartSound.
| | 00:57 | And that's going to launch
Sonicfire Pro 5 and open your SmartSound
| | 01:03 | Express Track.
| | 01:04 | What we are going to do here is make
some music. And the highlighted blue areas
| | 01:08 | here are the ones that you own that are
on your computer, so if I uncheck all of
| | 01:13 | these, you'll see we just
have these music pieces.
| | 01:19 | If I click on SmartSound Store, we
have the entire store, which is 3,542 songs,
| | 01:27 | so that's quite a bit.
| | 01:29 | It also has a searchable menu here.
| | 01:31 | So if I am looking for cartoon sounds
because they are all sound effects as well,
| | 01:36 | some disco, Studio 54,
I know what that is. Let's listen to that.
| | 01:40 | (music playing)
| | 01:47 | So if I was making that a Saturday
Night Fever movie, that would be the exact
| | 01:51 | way to go, I would think.
| | 01:52 | But that's not going to work for us.
| | 01:54 | But if I wanted to do that, I
would have to go into this Buy button,
| | 01:57 | because once again, we don't own it.
| | 01:59 | It's not highlighted, and I would click Buy.
| | 02:03 | This launches the Purchase area and
yes, it's going to cost me $29.95 to use that song.
| | 02:09 | Now I do own it forever, so if you
plan on making a lot of disco movies,
| | 02:13 | this is a great buy.
| | 02:15 | There's also you can download the entire
album, so there is a Classic Rock album
| | 02:19 | is what it's called.
| | 02:20 | And you would go to the SmartSound web
site and make sure that those are all
| | 02:24 | the songs you wanted.
| | 02:26 | So to buy this one, I would click OK
and it would automatically take me to
| | 02:30 | pay and download it.
| | 02:31 | And it would be downloaded onto my hard drive.
| | 02:33 | Fortunately, I don't have a budget for
this, so I am not going to buy this song.
| | 02:37 | So we are going to cancel out of it.
| | 02:40 | And we're going to go back and find
something that we own, so I am going to
| | 02:44 | scroll back in Style here and just
choose All-60 Styles once again, and we are
| | 02:50 | going to scroll back up to the
top. And here are the options I have.
| | 02:53 | I can also turn this off, like I said, so
I don't have to entice myself by trying
| | 02:57 | to find other songs, and there we go.
| | 03:00 | So this shows you, it's a core
foundation that ships with this particular
| | 03:04 | product, and the Intensity, whether fast
or slow on a tempo, so you can really
| | 03:09 | get into all of that.
| | 03:11 | And then I am going to search
around, so let's try Julie's Place.
| | 03:15 | (music playing)
| | 03:22 | That's it. Groovy!
| | 03:24 | Not only can I change the Variation,
so let's say right now we are in
| | 03:28 | Meanwhile, but it also has
another couple of Variations,
| | 03:30 | (music playing)
| | 03:34 | And we will stop there, and here is Bud.
| | 03:36 | (music playing)
| | 03:43 | So you can tell there is a
couple of different ways I can go.
| | 03:45 | I particularly like the Meanwhile,
so I am going to stick with that.
| | 03:49 | And Mood here tells me, do I want a
Full, do I want it to be Background.
| | 03:53 | Let's listen to that.
| | 03:54 | (music playing)
It's a little more muted.
| | 04:01 | Dialog.
(music playing)
| | 04:06 | So if you can hear me, that means that
this Dialog might work for my dialog
| | 04:10 | right, my narration.
| | 04:12 | And then you can really get into it
if you just want to hear drums, bass or
| | 04:20 | drums and piano. And right next to it
is the mixer so I can actually click on
| | 04:28 | this and create my own mix, so I
have my Drums, Bass, Piano, Vibes and
| | 04:34 | Trumpet, so I can move this around
and create my own mixer, and if that's
| | 04:38 | something you want to do to be really
micromanaging it all, then that's the way
| | 04:41 | to go, so take a look at that.
| | 04:43 | So I am going to stick with my
Dialog because I am talking there.
| | 04:48 | Now remember that number we had,
Length? So I am going to change the
| | 04:52 | Length right here.
| | 04:54 | So we had 56:17, so we got 56 and 17 frames.
| | 05:01 | I have to press Send.
| | 05:03 | It's rendering out a little audio
file for us and placed it right into the
| | 05:07 | soundtrack area of the timeline.
| | 05:09 | It's going exactly to the length that
I wanted it to, and let's press play.
| | 05:14 | (music playing)
| | 05:18 | (David: Hello and welcome to Santa Barbara, where today
we're going to see some amazing dancing)
| | 05:24 | (from the Santa Barbara Dance Company, so let's get
back in our seats and get ready to go.)
| | 05:31 | So as you can see, Elements and
SmartSound make a terrific pair when adding music
| | 05:36 | or creating a soundtrack for your movies.

| Applying audio effects| 00:00 | Many times when you have video in your
Timeline, the audio that comes with it
| | 00:04 | might not just be perfect
and we need to fix that.
| | 00:06 | So what are we going to do?
| | 00:08 | Well, we're going to take a
look at some audio effects now.
| | 00:10 | So I've got this interview, and let's
just listen to a couple of seconds.
| | 00:13 | (Female speaker: We're providing the students an
opportunity. It's not something that--)
| | 00:18 | So that's fine. I mean, she sounds okay.
| | 00:20 | It's like echoy in there and a lot of
noise, so I might want to fix that.
| | 00:24 | So let's see some of the things that we can do.
| | 00:26 | Let's just select that clip and
we'll go into Edit and we'll choose Edit Effects.
| | 00:33 | Off the bat, it's got two opportunities here.
| | 00:35 | One is Volume and one is Balance.
| | 00:38 | So I'm not going to mess with the
Balance, but I'm going to look at the Volume,
| | 00:41 | and maybe I'll raise it up a little
bit here, 3.5 decibels, and let's listen.
| | 00:45 | (Female speaker: --is that we're providing the students an
opportunity. It's not something that's like tan--)
| | 00:50 | So that's fine. She sounds a little louder, but
it doesn't help us with our noise.
| | 00:54 | Let's see what else we can do.
| | 00:55 | I'm going to go into the Effects area here.
| | 00:57 | If I down arrow and choose the Audio
Effects, I have some audio effects.
| | 01:03 | Not even close to the amount of video
effects, but these are pretty handy.
| | 01:06 | So let's take a look at right
here, NewBlue Noise Reducer.
| | 01:11 | So to add an audio effect, all I have
to do is select it and I can drag it onto
| | 01:16 | the footage or onto the clip.
| | 01:18 | I'm going to drag it onto the footage.
| | 01:20 | And here it is right there, you can tell.
| | 01:23 | Now at anytime, I can just
click on it and click the trashcan.
| | 01:26 | It'll get rid of it. So let's listen to this.
| | 01:28 | (Female speaker: What I think is great about EDN is that--)
| | 01:32 | It's actually gotten rid of a lot of
the noise, but it sounds a little muffled
| | 01:35 | now, so maybe we'll tweak that a bit.
| | 01:37 | Let's click on Edit Effects, and here it is.
| | 01:40 | We'll press the down arrow. And now
this Bypass check box is on most of the
| | 01:46 | effects and all it's telling you
is I want to bypass this effect.
| | 01:49 | So we're not really going
to be using that very often.
| | 01:52 | Let's look at the Strength though.
| | 01:55 | And the cool thing about audio
effects is I can play them back in real time
| | 01:58 | and listen to them.
| | 02:00 | So let's go back to square one
and let's press the play button.
| | 02:04 | (Female speaker: What I think is great about EDN is that
we're providing the students with an opportunity.)
(It's not something that's, like, tangible, like food
or toys; it's something that they really use to empower themselves.)
| | 02:17 | So that's a little bit better,
definitely better than this.
| | 02:20 | (Female speaker: We're providing the
students with an opportunity.)
| | 02:23 | I mean you hear all kinds of
things in the background.
| | 02:26 | And if I put that back on--
| | 02:28 | (Female speaker: We're providing the
students with an opportunity. It's not something that's, like--)
| | 02:31 | --it knocks out most of the noise.
| | 02:33 | So take a look at the Effects
window here and you can find a lot of
| | 02:37 | audio effects.
| | 02:38 | And I would take a look at them all and
just see which ones you really want to
| | 02:42 | work with, and know that there's a lot
of different ways to change them and
| | 02:46 | configure them to your liking.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Mixing audio with SmartMixer| 00:00 | So before you let the world check out
your awesome new video, you're going to
| | 00:04 | want to do a little bit of mixing,
cleaning up the audio a little bit and making
| | 00:08 | the sounds all kind of
melt together in a big pot.
| | 00:12 | So let's take a look at how we would do that.
| | 00:15 | Elements ships with two great audio
tools, and one is called the Smart Mixer and
| | 00:19 | the other one is just the Audio Mixer.
| | 00:22 | The Smart Mixer is going to go in and
say okay, we've got narration here and
| | 00:27 | we've got dialogue here
and we've got music here,
| | 00:30 | and I'm going to go in there and fix
this all for this guy and make sure that
| | 00:34 | he's got keyframes, and
it's going to sound great.
| | 00:37 | So let's take a look at how that works.
| | 00:39 | I'm going to click on Smart Mix
and I'm going to choose Apply.
| | 00:42 | But before I choose Apply,
let's try Options first.
| | 00:47 | And it's going to open up my Smart
Mixer here and within this, it's telling me
| | 00:51 | I've got Audio 1, which is this file
right here; the interview, Narration, which
| | 00:56 | is my narration track I recorded; the
Soundtrack, which is back here; and then if
| | 01:00 | I had anything on Audio 2 or
3, it would be here as well.
| | 01:04 | And it gives me some options here. Do I
want Audio 1 to be in the foreground, to
| | 01:08 | be in the background, or disabled?
| | 01:11 | So Foreground meaning it's
prominent in our video, so we want to really hear that.
| | 01:16 | The Narration track as well, we want
to hear that, so we're going to keep that there.
| | 01:20 | The Soundtrack is just kind of moving
the video along for us, so we're going to
| | 01:24 | keep that in the background.
| | 01:25 | We don't want it to overpower these two.
| | 01:27 | And now you just click Apply, and it's
going to smart mix for you and there,
| | 01:32 | it did it.
| | 01:33 | So we've got two keyframes here and
remember, we talked about keyframes.
| | 01:38 | Two keyframes here.
| | 01:39 | So basically it's going to go loud,
lower, loud again, and then lower is
| | 01:45 | here for the dialogue. So let's listen.
| | 01:47 | (music playing)
| | 01:52 | (David: Hello and welcome to Santa Barbara, where today
we're going to see some amazing dancing)
| | 01:57 | (from the Santa Barbara Dance Company, so let's get
back in our seats and get ready to go.)
| | 02:03 | (music playing)
| | 02:17 | (Female speaker: What I think is great about EDN is that
we're providing the students with an opportunity.)
| | 02:21 | (It's not something that's, like, tangible, like food
or toys; it's something that they can really use to empower themselves.)
| | 02:29 | And that's it. If you're happy with that, you're done.
| | 02:32 | You just pressed one button, made sure
some settings were correct, and you can
| | 02:35 | kind of go on your way and
| | 02:37 | Me, I kind of want some things to be different.
| | 02:41 | I want to be more hands-on.
| | 02:43 | And actually underneath the Smart Mixer--
you can just down arrow it back up--is
| | 02:48 | the Audio Mixer, which was right there.
| | 02:51 | It's going to look like this.
| | 02:52 | Now what does this do?
| | 02:54 | Now this looks a little
frightening, yeah, but no, it's not.
| | 02:57 | You basically can use these levers
here to go up and down and change the volume levels,
| | 03:03 | so if you want something higher or lower.
Why would I want to use this on this
| | 03:07 | particular video that we're making? It's because
| | 03:09 | I think the narration could be a
little louder, and I think her audio could be
| | 03:13 | a little bit louder.
| | 03:15 | And so I'm going to do that manually,
because we saw the Smart Mixer just took
| | 03:18 | into account that there was audio on
narration and on the interview tracks and
| | 03:24 | that we wanted it in the foreground and
it just made sure that that was at its
| | 03:28 | normal levels and that the music in
the background went to a lower level.
| | 03:33 | So yes, I want the music to be a lower
level, but I also wanted these to be a
| | 03:37 | little bit louder, so it
didn't do anything like that.
| | 03:40 | So I'm going to go in here and choose
File > Revert to go back to square one,
| | 03:47 | and there we go.
| | 03:49 | And now I'm going to use my mixer, move
it over a little bit. And all I need to
| | 03:55 | do is press play and start
to move my levels around.
| | 03:57 | So the first thing I'm
going to do is my Soundtrack.
| | 04:01 | So let's go to
Soundtrack right here. Press play.
| | 04:04 | (music playing)
| | 04:07 | (David: Hello and welcome to Santa Barbara, where today
we're going to see some amazing dancing)
| | 04:13 | (from the Santa Barbara Dance Company, so let's get
back in our seats and get ready to go.)
| | 04:22 | I'll stop it right there.
| | 04:24 | And you can see the mixer went in
and made all of these keyframes.
| | 04:28 | So anytime I just even gently
moved it, it made keyframes.
| | 04:31 | Not a big deal.
| | 04:32 | They're all there and you
don't have to do anything. Let's listen to that.
| | 04:35 | (David: Hello and welcome to Santa Barbara,
where today we're going to see--)
| | 04:41 | So perfect! Now I just want to go in and fix my
audio, which is on the narration track.
| | 04:45 | So I'm going to start out with it
being a little louder and we'll go press play.
| | 04:52 | (David: Hello and welcome to Santa Barbara, where today
we're going to see some amazing dancing)
| | 04:57 | (from the Santa Barbara Dance Company, so let's get
back in our seats and get ready to go.)
| | 05:05 | So you can see I went from my normal
volume, I raised it, and there we go.
| | 05:10 | It sounds a lot better. Let's listen.
| | 05:14 | (David: Hello and welcome to Santa Barbara, where today
we're going to see some amazing dancing)
| | 05:19 | (from the Santa Barbara Dance Company, so let's get
back in our seats and get ready to go.)
| | 05:26 | So I'm happy with that, and I'm
going to move on to the last one.
| | 05:29 | I'm going to go right about here and I'm
going to bring this volume down because
| | 05:34 | if I didn't, it would sound like this.
| | 05:35 | (video playing)
| | 05:38 | So now I'm thinking, do I want to
hear the great music or hear her talk? So
| | 05:41 | we've got to fix that.
| | 05:42 | So I'm going to go over here and get
ready with my soundtrack and press play.
| | 05:47 | (Female speaker: What I think is great about EDN is that
we're providing the students with an opportunity.)
| | 05:52 | (It's not something that's, like, tangible, like food
or toys; it's something that they really use to empower themselves.)
| | 06:01 | And there it made all these
different keyframes for me. Now if I listen--
| | 06:04 | (Female speaker: What I think is great about EDN is that
we're providing the students with an opportunity.)
| | 06:11 | (It's not something that's,
like, tangible, like food or--)
| | 06:14 | And now I'm going to back and just
bring her volume just up a tad, which is
| | 06:19 | going to be in Audio 1, and let's do that.
| | 06:21 | (Female speaker: What I think is great about EDN is that
we're providing the students with an opportunity.)
| | 06:26 | (It's not something that's, like, tangible, like food
or toys; it's something that they really use to empower themselves.)
| | 06:34 | And that's it. I'm done. I like it.
| | 06:36 | I can now export this and make my movie.
| | 06:38 | I made the audio sound a lot better
by mixing the volumes using the mixer.
| | 06:44 | So to mix audio quickly,
let's try out the Smart Mixer.
| | 06:47 | But if you want to be
precise, try the Audio Mixer.
| | 06:51 | It's a lot of fun.

8. Creating TitlesCreating and animating text| 00:00 | So I just finished my intro to
Santa Barbara, welcoming you into our
| | 00:04 | dance company, and I want to add a
little title that just says "Welcome to
| | 00:08 | Santa Barbara."
| | 00:09 | So let's take a look at how
we add text into our videos.
| | 00:13 | In the Preview Monitor here, we can
go and click on the default text tool.
| | 00:18 | It's a big T. Just click on it once,
and it's going to make a text element.
| | 00:25 | And one thing I did wrong was I wanted
it to be right about where I'm going to
| | 00:30 | start saying "Welcome to Santa Barbara."
| | 00:32 | But wherever you have the Current Time
Indicator, that's where it's going to
| | 00:36 | place your text into the video layer.
| | 00:39 | So, not a big deal.
| | 00:41 | I'm just going to go--right about there
| | 00:43 | I say "Welcome to Santa Barbara."
| | 00:43 | I'm going to go out to this Title 02,
which is my text, and just drag it over,
| | 00:48 | click and drag, and then I might
actually extend it just a little bit. That's good.
| | 00:53 | So now I'm going to go into adding
some text, and I'm going to change this and
| | 00:57 | say "Welcome to Santa Barbara."
| | 01:05 | And if you've ever used anything
like Microsoft Word, you will be very
| | 01:08 | comfortable in this because
it's got a lot of the same tools.
| | 01:12 | So here's my Selection tool, and I'm
just going to drag this over into the
| | 01:14 | middle a little bit.
| | 01:15 | And I'm going to here and change
my alignment to center alignment.
| | 01:20 | That looks a little bit better.
| | 01:21 | I can also go in and change different
text fonts, so I can choose Courier or
| | 01:28 | even the amazing Helvetica, which is
worthy enough of making a whole movie on.
| | 01:33 | So there's Helvetica, and I can go into
bold or--so I'm just going to stay at
| | 01:39 | Light Oblique for now.
| | 01:41 | But what if I don't want to do that?
| | 01:43 | I can also use text styles.
| | 01:46 | So here's text styles.
| | 01:47 | These are presets that you can
choose, so here's Bell Gothic.
| | 01:51 | It changes it to that.
| | 01:53 | Here's another one, Charlemagne, Puffy.
| | 01:58 | So there are a lot of different styles
that it ships with, and you just have to
| | 02:02 | go and find the one that you like.
| | 02:04 | So this is nice, "Welcome to Santa
Barbara," it's a nice font there and I'm
| | 02:07 | happy with that.
| | 02:08 | So I'm just going to leave that one alone.
| | 02:10 | If I wanted to change the color of it,
I could go in here and choose Color
| | 02:15 | Properties and say you know what, I
want this to be more of a green kind of a
| | 02:20 | linear gradient it's got going
on here, so that's kind of cool.
| | 02:23 | I'm going to leave that alone. I like that.
| | 02:25 | And you know what, I'm going to
probably use this on future videos that I'm
| | 02:29 | doing about Santa Barbara.
| | 02:30 | So I'm going to go right here and
choose Save Style, and I'm going to call this
| | 02:35 | Dave's Green SB, for
Santa Barbara and I click OK.
| | 02:42 | And if I want to ever get to this later
on when I'm making more titles, I just
| | 02:45 | have to down arrow in the Text Styles
and at the very end of all the presets
| | 02:50 | is Dave's Green SB.
| | 02:52 | So I just need to, for example, go
into the Type tool here and type in
| | 02:59 | whatever I want,
| | 03:00 | and I can just click on that and it
changes it automatically into Dave's SB.
| | 03:06 | But I don't want that, so I'm
going to erase that. And I'm liking this.
| | 03:11 | It looks good.
| | 03:12 | So now let's go back into the
Timeline and as you can see, we have that red
| | 03:17 | render bar going across.
| | 03:18 | So we want that to be green.
| | 03:20 | Let's go back a little bit.
| | 03:22 | Let's press the Enter key,
and let's start to render.
| | 03:25 | (video playing)
| | 03:30 | (David: Hello and welcome to Santa Barbara,
where today we are going to see some amazing)
| | 03:34 | (dancing from the Santa Barbara Dance Company.)
| | 03:37 | (So let's get back in our
seats and get ready to go.)
| | 03:40 | And that's it. It looks great!
| | 03:42 | Easy to do, easy to change, great to customize.
| | 03:45 | Now what if you wanted to add an
animation, something fading in that
| | 03:50 | you'd like to have?
| | 03:51 | So let's take a look at how to add an animation.
| | 03:53 | I'm going to go down here.
| | 03:55 | Now one thing about animation and
text is it doesn't like to work with the
| | 04:00 | presets, these text styles.
| | 04:02 | It likes to work with just regular text.
| | 04:04 | So let's choose the Text tool down here
and you see I have my playhead moved, and
| | 04:10 | I'm just going to write "Alina Interview."
| | 04:15 | And that's Alina, one of the dancers
and maybe I just want to have this down
| | 04:18 | here, so we can see who it is.
| | 04:22 | I might want to change
the coloring a little bit.
| | 04:23 | I'm going to go with the other stuff, so there.
| | 04:27 | That's good, and I can go
in there and change our font.
| | 04:30 | So let's find something nice.
| | 04:32 | It says Brush Script a little bit.
| | 04:34 | So that looks kind of cool.
| | 04:36 | So now I just want to add an animation.
| | 04:38 | So if I close out the Text Styles and
choose in Text Animation, I have some
| | 04:44 | great options. And I'm going to just
close this down a little bit so we can see.
| | 04:48 | If I press the button, it'll show me.
| | 04:50 | It kind of flies across, and that's kind of cool.
| | 04:54 | There are many others that I can choose,
but I'm going to stick with that one.
| | 04:57 | It's nice and clean.
| | 04:59 | And all I need to do is click Apply
and it's going to apply the animation
| | 05:03 | preset to that text.
| | 05:05 | And now I'm going to go back into my
Timeline and I'm going to get rid of this
| | 05:11 | red bar here by pressing the Enter key,
and it renders it out, and we'll see some animation.
| | 05:17 | (video playing)
| | 05:20 | Now one thing to keep in mind is
that anytime you render anything in
| | 05:24 | Elements, it's going to go back to the
very beginning of your movie, even if
| | 05:27 | you're ten hours into it.
| | 05:28 | So that's something to keep in mind.
| | 05:31 | So we're done here. Let's see what happens.
| | 05:32 | (video playing)
| | 05:34 | (Alina: What I think is great about EDN is that
we're providing the students with an opportunity.)
| | 05:39 | (It's not something that's, like, tangible.)
| | 05:41 | So that was cool.
| | 05:42 | I mean, it just kind of zoomed on, and
I like the way it looked and of course,
| | 05:45 | you can double-click here and go back
in and change the animation if you like.
| | 05:50 | So we can go try a different one.
| | 05:53 | Let's try this one.
| | 05:55 | We'll apply that. And I can change the
color back to, say, white, because I wanted
| | 05:59 | it to be a little more viewable.
| | 06:02 | And now I can just go back and
press the Enter key one more time and
| | 06:05 | we'll render it out.
| | 06:07 | And here I'll move my playhead back
here and let's see what that looks like.
| | 06:10 | (Alina: What I think is great about EDN is that
we're providing the students with an opportunity.)
| | 06:16 | That was an interesting little look
and I don't know if I want to use that or
| | 06:19 | not, but I can always go back and
change that once again by double-clicking and
| | 06:23 | finding the new animation.
| | 06:24 | I actually liked the first one better,
so I'm going to choose it again and click
| | 06:29 | Apply, go back, press Enter. So there it is.
| | 06:34 | That's easy to add an animation to your title.
| | 06:37 | There are tons of presets.
| | 06:38 | One thing I would do is go in here for
sure and clean this up, so this would be
| | 06:42 | welcome, and this is back in our Project Screen.
| | 06:45 | So it doesn't say Title 01, Title 02.
| | 06:47 | You know exactly what they are
in case you have to go to them.
| | 06:50 | In this we're going to write alina interview.
| | 06:54 | So now anytime I need to go back, if I
have a lot of interviews with Alina, I
| | 06:57 | can just go in there and add them.
| | 06:59 | Let's take a look at one other thing
that kind of bothered me and I want to make
| | 07:03 | it look a lot better.
| | 07:06 | So in my Welcome Screen where I say,
"Welcome to Santa Barbara" in my text right
| | 07:10 | here, it kind of just ends abruptly and
let's just scroll, and it just pops off.
| | 07:16 | I kind of want to do a nice little fade-out.
| | 07:19 | I know what you're thinking.
| | 07:20 | I'm going to go in and click on my
Edit menu and choose Transitions and I'm
| | 07:25 | going to drag this Dip to Black.
| | 07:27 | But let me show you what happens if I do that.
| | 07:29 | So let's just drag it on.
| | 07:31 | Let me render that really quickly, and
we'll skip ahead here, and let's press
| | 07:36 | the spacebar.
| | 07:37 | (David: Santa Barbara Dance Company--)
| | 07:40 | It not only faded that out, but
it also faded out the video below.
| | 07:44 | So anytime you add an effect or a
transition to something on top of the text or
| | 07:50 | maybe you have five
layers of text or other videos,
| | 07:53 | that's always going to work its
way down to whatever is below.
| | 07:57 | We don't want that.
| | 07:59 | But we have a good friend in our Motion tab.
| | 08:02 | So I'm going to select my text and I'm
going to go into Edit > Effects and I'm
| | 08:09 | going to choose Edit Effects.
| | 08:12 | And now I've got my motion. And
we're going to do our Show Keyframes, as
| | 08:17 | we've done before.
| | 08:19 | And now, like I said, I can work all in here.
| | 08:22 | So at the end of the video, I'm going
to go in here and we're going to look for Opacity.
| | 08:27 | So let's look for the Opacity area, and
we're going to set a keyframe and let's
| | 08:32 | set a keyframe there.
| | 08:34 | And I'm changing this to 0 and now we're
going to scroll back and make that 100.
| | 08:42 | So it should go from 100 down to 0.
| | 08:48 | So let's take a look at how that works.
| | 08:50 | I am going back to the beginning of my
Timeline, and now I've got to render that
| | 08:56 | red bar once again to show our animation.
| | 09:00 | And now we'll pause it and skip
ahead a little bit, and it fades out nice and subtly.
| | 09:07 | (video playing)
| | 09:10 | So I like that. I'm happy
and that looks fantastic.
| | 09:13 | Remember, you can always challenge
yourself with ideas, with text, with
| | 09:18 | animations, and have a lot of fun
customizing things, and you can edit them at any time.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Creating lower thirds| 00:00 | So if you have ever seen newscasts or
television shows or interview shows and
| | 00:05 | they always have some sort of what are called
lower 3rds or an identifier showing who the
| | 00:11 | person is talking or what
channel you are watching, et cetera,
| | 00:14 | we can do that right here in
Elements too, and it makes it look fantastic.
| | 00:18 | Let's take a look.
| | 00:19 | If I go back to my Alina
Interview and we had the nice animation, that's fine.
| | 00:25 | But maybe I wanted to say Alina, Dance
Instructor, so we kind of know who she is.
| | 00:29 | I'm going to do something different here.
| | 00:31 | I'm going to select that and delete it,
and we are going to start from scratch.
| | 00:35 | So let's get the Text tool one more time,
and here is our default text. Then I
| | 00:40 | am going to type in "Alina, Dance
Instructor," and we will move it over a little
| | 00:48 | bit. And it's a little big, so we will
make it smaller, and we are going to choose
| | 00:53 | a nice font like Helvetica.
| | 00:55 | Let's make it a little smaller, and
let's make it Light Oblique, so that looks nice.
| | 01:02 | Now it says who she is and that can
be my fade-ins and et cetera, but let's
| | 01:07 | add a lower 3rd box.
| | 01:09 | So you might notice also that there
are some lines going around here, and we
| | 01:14 | didn't discuss that yet, but
those are called title-safe lines.
| | 01:18 | Anything outside of these lines, if
it's played on the television, will not be seen;
| | 01:23 | you want everything to be
kind of be inside these lines.
| | 01:26 | Then on the Internet though
it's going to be all over.
| | 01:29 | You can see everything.
| | 01:30 | Let's choose Rectangle. And I am going
to make a bar going all the way across
| | 01:36 | the bottom right here, and now that's
great, and I am going to change the color.
| | 01:40 | I want of kind of do some kind of
green to go with the green here. Click OK.
| | 01:45 | The only problem is I can't see my text,
so I am going to right-click, make sure
| | 01:49 | that I am right-clicking on the box,
and see how it's highlighted? Right-click
| | 01:54 | and choose Arrange and either Sent to
Back or Send Backward, so we are just
| | 02:00 | going to send it Back, and here is our text.
| | 02:03 | And one thing I might want to do in my
text is select my text once again, go
| | 02:07 | into the palette, and let's add a
little drop shadow because it's going to
| | 02:10 | really make it stick out.
There you go. Looks great.
| | 02:14 | Now I am going to move this shape up here.
| | 02:16 | We are probably going to use this one,
but there are other ones we can use.
| | 02:19 | Actually, I will just bring it over
here to kind of hide of hide it for now.
| | 02:21 | Or, you know what? I am going
to make one from scratch again.
| | 02:24 | Let's go in here and choose the Ellipse tool.
| | 02:28 | This is kind of an interesting look.
| | 02:30 | You can go kind of match our
text over here a little bit.
| | 02:34 | I can actually shrink the text
a little, so I will leave that there.
| | 02:39 | Let's go back in, and we will
arrange that. We will send that to back.
| | 02:44 | Let me just select it.
| | 02:46 | Let's change the color again, and there you go.
| | 02:49 | That's a little more artistic. And let's
click on that one and get rid of it and
| | 02:56 | choose the rounded rectangle.
| | 02:58 | On this one, I might want to start
here and bring it this way, drag it over a
| | 03:04 | little bit, so I start with the square
area and kind of come into a rounded area,
| | 03:08 | and that's pretty cool too.
| | 03:10 | So let's send that to the back, right-
clicking and saying Arrange > Sent to Back.
| | 03:14 | Here is my text.
| | 03:16 | Let's change the color.
And that looks pretty cool.
| | 03:21 | Now within the Color Properties, I can
also choose a gradient, so I want to do
| | 03:25 | some kind of the gradient. And we can
choose the first color. It can be like a green,
| | 03:31 | and this one maybe a little darker, and
we will click OK. So now I've got this nice
| | 03:39 | gradient going down, and let me just
clean it up a little bit, and we will drag
| | 03:43 | this up a little bit right
there, and that looks a lot better.
| | 03:49 | So now let's make it a little longer,
and I will move it over just a hair, and
| | 03:53 | let's render that really quick.
| | 03:55 | (video playing)
| | 03:57 | And we will stop that and scroll
forward, and let's see what it looks like.
| | 04:01 | (Alina:--great about EDN is that
we're providing the students--)
| | 04:04 | So that looks a lot
more professional. I like that.
| | 04:07 | One last thing I would do is click on
it and go to Edit, and we will choose Edit
| | 04:12 | Effects, and we will choose Opacity.
And now I might want to do a fade-in and
| | 04:19 | this is really cool because I could
just click here and choose Fade-In instead
| | 04:22 | of adding all those keyframes we did
before. And we are going to fade in.
| | 04:27 | Let's see what that looks like. Re-render it.
| | 04:31 | (video playing)
| | 04:32 | (Alina: What I think is great about EDN is that--)
There is nice fade-in.
| | 04:38 | The last thing I want to do to make it
a little better is I am going to go back
| | 04:41 | on here and double-click so I have it
selected, and I am going to right-click
| | 04:46 | on the box, on this rounded rectangle,
and I am going to go to Transform and choose
| | 04:52 | Opacity and I am going to lower that
to 75% so we can see through it a little
| | 04:58 | bit, and then I am going to do one last
thing, Edit Effects, and we will chose a
| | 05:05 | Fade Out, so we have both.
| | 05:08 | And now we are going to re-render it,
and I think we are going to look great.
| | 05:11 | And now let's take a look.
| | 05:13 | (Female speaker: What I think is great about EDN is that
we're providing the students with an opportunity.)
| | 05:18 | (It's not something that's, like, tangible,
like food or toys; it's something that--)
| | 05:22 | That's fantastic.
| | 05:24 | So Elements really gives you an
opportunity to make some cool shapes, and those
| | 05:29 | can really enhance your videos.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Using style presets and templates | 00:00 | Adobe Elements 10 ships with some ready-
to-go title templates that will really
| | 00:03 | enhance your videos.
| | 00:05 | Let's take a look at how those work.
| | 00:06 | So we're going to launch Elements, and
now I'm going to go into Edit > Titles,
| | 00:16 | and this is where you
would see all of your themes.
| | 00:18 | So this particular theme is called Fun,
so it's got four different templates in it:
| | 00:24 | Fun Credits, Fun Frame--if I just
press the button, it shows you, nothing
| | 00:28 | is animated there--
| | 00:29 | Fun Lower 3rd--nothing is animated
there--and Fun Title, and there is
| | 00:34 | nothing animated there.
| | 00:36 | But if I go into Fun Credits and
click the button, we see that the
| | 00:40 | credits scroll up.
| | 00:41 | So I kind of like that. I
want to use that in my project.
| | 00:44 | So I'm going to go right about here
and make sure that's selected and choose
| | 00:49 | Apply, and it applies it right there.
| | 00:51 | So once again we're back into the
Text tool, and we're going to type in End
| | 00:56 | Credits. And then I'm going to go
down here and start picking some people I
| | 01:02 | want to acknowledge.
| | 01:03 | So we have of course, Alina, dancer was
in it, and then we're going to say, "Thank
| | 01:09 | you too," and then we'll choose Santa
Barbara, and to me, because I need thanks.
| | 01:19 | We'll say thanks Adobe and lynda.com.
| | 01:24 | So I'm done, and it's in there, and I
can just use my Selection tool and let's
| | 01:29 | go back here. And we have to render
this once again, so when we see the red
| | 01:32 | bar, let's press the Enter key. And
let's go right here and press the spacebar,
| | 01:40 | and here's our credits.
| | 01:41 | So it's going a little bit fast,
so I want to slow them down.
| | 01:44 | I've still got more music here, so I'm
just going to go, as we do with any other
| | 01:48 | clip, and click on it and drag it to
the end there so it snaps, and then we'll
| | 01:53 | render that one more time,
and then let's play that.
| | 01:59 | (clip playing)
| | 02:04 | So there are some nice credits
going nice and slow. So that's done.
| | 02:08 | Let's take a look at the lower 3rd, so
let's go back in the middle here, and I
| | 02:12 | want the dance company to be acknowledged here.
| | 02:15 | So I'm going to grab this lower 3rd
and just bring it down here on top.
| | 02:20 | So I'm going to type in "The Dancers."
| | 02:26 | Drag that right here, and once again
we've got to bring back to the front now, so
| | 02:30 | let's go Arrange > Bring to
Front, and there's the dancers.
| | 02:35 | And I might add a little drop shadow,
and let's just render that out, and we'll play.
| | 02:44 | So Premiere Elements 10 has some
great and fun ready-to-use themes at your disposal.
| | 02:48 | If this one is not particularly right
for your movie, I would highly recommend
| | 02:52 | downloading the other themes and content.

|
9. AutomationThe Auto-Analyzer| 00:00 | Adobe Premiere Elements 10 comes
with a nifty little tool called
| | 00:03 | the Auto Analyzer.
| | 00:05 | And what it does is it allows you to
take long clips and break them down into
| | 00:10 | smaller ones that you might
want to use in your movies.
| | 00:14 | So, for example, this first clip I
have here--and let me just move this over.
| | 00:18 | It's called b-roll dance
rehearsal 01, and it is four minutes long.
| | 00:22 | Well, I don't know if I really want to
have a four-minute clip in my Timeline.
| | 00:27 | I might want some of the pieces of it
though. So, yes, I can go in there and
| | 00:31 | do it all myself manually or I can
just select it, right-click, and choose Run
| | 00:36 | Auto Analyzer.
| | 00:39 | And it zooms through and says,
"Analysis of this file has been completed."
| | 00:43 | And what it does is it creates a new
folder--so if we look up here, there is my
| | 00:48 | original file and here is a
new folder, and let's click on it--
| | 00:53 | of a lot of little clips.
| | 00:57 | So I went in there and said, well, at
one point something happened in the clip
| | 01:02 | that made the camera move to the right
or the left or zoom in or do other things
| | 01:07 | and that's when it made the little cuts for us.
| | 01:10 | And let's just take a look at those little cuts.
| | 01:12 | For example, here is a clip right here,
and here are the in and out points, so
| | 01:17 | it made them for us.
| | 01:19 | So this is actually a little bit longer.
And then let's look at another clip.
| | 01:24 | Let's scroll down a little bit.
| | 01:25 | We'll take a look at this one.
| | 01:27 | Here is another clip that starts there.
| | 01:30 | It's those two dancing, so it saw that
they were in the scene and kept going, so
| | 01:35 | I've got that. And maybe I'm just
looking for something that she is dancing in.
| | 01:38 | I've got it there.
| | 01:39 | Now you can also see that I've got the
handles, and if you remember back in the
| | 01:43 | Trimming section, you can move
these handles any way you want.
| | 01:51 | So that is all done for you.
| | 01:53 | Now let's take another look. If I close
this up and I go back into my Icon view,
| | 02:00 | here is that original file, but next
to it--now if notice these other files
| | 02:04 | don't have this little arrow.
| | 02:06 | So that is pretty much the
equivalent of a folder, down here.
| | 02:13 | But in the Icon view they make it into
an arrow, and what it does is it expands
| | 02:17 | to the right, and let's click on
it, and here are all your clips.
| | 02:20 | So if you need to see them in
bigger thumbnails, you can see them here like that.
| | 02:28 | So as you can see, the Auto Analyzer
really is a useful tool to break up big clips
| | 02:34 | into a bunch of little ones.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| InstantMovie and themes| 00:00 | Adobe Premiere Elements 10 has a
useful feature called the Instant Movie mode,
| | 00:05 | and what is that? Well,
that's exactly what it does.
| | 00:08 | It makes an instant movie
from clips that you select.
| | 00:10 | So let's take a look at how we do that.
| | 00:13 | So I have got some footage down here
in folders, called broll_dance_rehersal,
| | 00:17 | and I showed you how to make that in
another movie on Auto Analyzer. So I am
| | 00:22 | going to take a look. We are going to go into
the Icon view. And I am going to get some real estate
| | 00:26 | here, because I really need to see
this. This is important right here.
| | 00:29 | And I am going to make these bigger,
and now I have all my clips. And I am just
| | 00:37 | going to click on one that's
going to deselect them all.
| | 00:39 | So I am going to click on this one
first, because I like that, and we will look around.
| | 00:44 | I am going to hold my Command key down
on the Mac, Ctrl key down on the PC, and I
| | 00:49 | will choose this one, and we will keep going.
| | 00:52 | I like this one of the boy dancing.
| | 00:56 | This one looks interesting, maybe a
little bit of a close-up there, some of this
| | 01:01 | night movie stuff, and we will end with that.
| | 01:07 | So once I am done with that, I just
have to go Create Instant Movie, and it's
| | 01:13 | going to ask me once again, what style do I want?
| | 01:16 | So, if I had downloaded that extra
content that I showed you, you would see
| | 01:19 | it all here.
| | 01:21 | So we are going to choose this one
and click Next, and I am going to call
| | 01:25 | this Dancing is fun!
And DirectedByMe, yes. And you know what?
| | 01:30 | I am going to leave the
rest of the stuff in there.
| | 01:33 | I am going to do an instant Auto Movie,
Auto Edit and Auto Analyze the clip
| | 01:39 | applied to the entire movie.
| | 01:41 | Theme Music, I can choose the theme music
that it has or no music at all.
| | 01:46 | I can have sound effects.
| | 01:47 | Here we are with that Smart Mix
again, so if we have any interviews
| | 01:51 | there, which I don't, I can click on that.
| | 01:53 | It would look for those types of things.
| | 01:57 | My Speed or Intensity, do you want a
lot of effects, slower cuts, faster cuts?
| | 02:01 | I am going to leave everything default on that.
| | 02:03 | My duration, my sequence, what content
I have, do I want to include it all, and
| | 02:08 | do I want to have to pre-render it?
| | 02:11 | So let's just Apply, and it's saying
that I only have a clips totaling 2 minutes
| | 02:16 | and 48 seconds, and I want to create an
instant movie without repeating clips.
| | 02:19 | I am fine; I want to repeat clips, because I
want to show the essence of this dancing.
| | 02:23 | So let's just keep on going.
| | 02:25 | I am going to click No, and it's
applying my movie, and it's telling me now that
| | 02:32 | I have an InstantMovie. Do I want
to render it for smoother playback?
| | 02:35 | I think I do because there are a lot
of effects, so I am going to click Yes,
| | 02:40 | and we will just let it render really briefly.
| | 02:46 | Okay, so we are done. And let me just
scroll back up, but before I do, you
| | 02:50 | can see that it made another folder
called Fun and Instant movie, so let's
| | 02:55 | scroll back up, and there it is in my Timeline.
| | 02:58 | Let's see what it created.
| | 02:59 | Actually let's give ourselves a
little more real estate here, so we can see the viewer.
| | 03:03 | It also added some markers here
as you see, so let's press play.
| | 03:09 | (video playing)
| | 03:50 | Okay, so you can see that it made a nice,
cool, little movie that's ready to go
| | 03:55 | and get it up on the web, make a
DVD, or any way you want to share it.
| | 03:59 | So the InstantMovie tool is a pretty
useful little feature in Elements 10.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Smart Trim| 00:00 | Adobe Premiere Elements 10 has a
feature called the Smart Trim mode, and what it
| | 00:06 | does is it goes in and takes a look at
your videos on the Timeline and picks out
| | 00:11 | clips that may be too shaky or dark, or
just that have problems with it that the
| | 00:16 | analyzer thinks has problems.
| | 00:18 | So, it's kind of going to be like your
overlord looking at what's going on within
| | 00:23 | your movie in case you missed something.
| | 00:25 | So, let's take a look at how that works.
| | 00:26 | So, the tool is actually right here.
| | 00:29 | It's called Smart Trim mode. And don't
get it confused with our Split Clip tool,
| | 00:33 | which are both a pair of scissors, but
one's going to the right and one's going to left.
| | 00:37 | So, we'll take a look at Smart Trim
mode down here, and I'll click it once.
| | 00:41 | It brings up a new panel here, Smart Trim
mode, and a dialog box will pop up telling
| | 00:47 | you that it's analyzing the clips.
| | 00:48 | It actually takes a little bit of time,
| | 00:50 | so I've sped things up and
done it prior to this movie.
| | 00:54 | And look at the options.
| | 00:56 | It allows me to choose my Quality Level.
| | 00:59 | If you go the right, that's higher
quality and to the left, it's lower quality.
| | 01:03 | So, it'll actually look for more
problems on your right and less on the left, and
| | 01:08 | same with the Interest Level.
| | 01:10 | Now, one thing that's key here is you
never want to have Automatic chosen, as far
| | 01:15 | as I'm concerned, because it'll go in there,
| | 01:18 | it'll analyze it, it'll pick clips
it doesn't like, and it'll cut them
| | 01:22 | off automatically. You have no say over them.
| | 01:24 | So, I don't recommend that.
| | 01:26 | Always keep it into Manual
mode and then just choose Save.
| | 01:29 | And at the end of it what you'll see
are these little lines that are on the
| | 01:34 | clips that it thinks is really bad.
| | 01:37 | So, let's go over.
| | 01:38 | Here's a clip of these handles.
| | 01:40 | So, right away, if you look at it you
might think well, it's blurry right here,
| | 01:43 | but that's the look I was
looking for, this depth of field.
| | 01:46 | So, the analyzer doesn't know that, so
it's thinking it's probably pretty bad.
| | 01:49 | So, let's see what it says for my notes.
| | 01:51 | See, it says Suggested
Trimming, Blurred, Low Contrast.
| | 01:55 | So, yes it's blurry, and maybe it's
not as contrasty as it can be, but
| | 02:00 | that's what I wanted.
| | 02:01 | So, I'm not going to listen to it.
But had I wanted to listen to it,
| | 02:05 | I could go right here and
go wow, that's a great idea.
| | 02:07 | So, let's see what Smart Trim, you're brilliant,
| | 02:10 | I'm going to go here and
right-click and choose Trim.
| | 02:13 | It's going to trim that clip out.
| | 02:15 | Everything is going to go back to the left.
| | 02:16 | It's going to ripple edit, as we've
seen in other videos, and that's gone.
| | 02:20 | So, it's trimmed that for me.
| | 02:22 | And I can go to the next one.
| | 02:23 | Let's see what that is.
| | 02:24 | That's the dance studios.
| | 02:26 | It's looking blurry here.
I'm sure that's what it says.
| | 02:28 | Let's see. Blurred and Shaky.
| | 02:30 | So, let's just play that, and
definitely blurred and shaky.
| | 02:36 | So, if I don't want that and if I go, my
god, the people are watching this, they
| | 02:40 | are going to be angry that it's
going to be blurred and shaky.
| | 02:41 | I'm going to right-click. I'm going to select it,
right-click, and trim that as well.
| | 02:46 | So, if you're done with your movie and
you want to just test out the Smart Trim
| | 02:49 | mode, go ahead and run it and then take
a look and see what kind of suggestions
| | 02:53 | it's made, because
sometimes they might be correct.
| | 02:55 | So, you can always make your
movie just a little bit better.

10. DVD CreationCreating your first DVD| 00:00 | So, you're done with your movie, and
now you want to make a DVD to show the world.
| | 00:04 | So, let's take a look at how we do that.
| | 00:06 | So, here's my movie in the
Timeline, and I want to make a DVD.
| | 00:09 | So, I can go to Share here to make a
DVD, but what I'm going to do first is
| | 00:14 | create some chapter markers for my DVD.
| | 00:17 | So, when I have it in the disc player,
I can say okay, I want it to go to this
| | 00:21 | point or that point and not just
have to watch the whole thing every time
| | 00:24 | from start to finish, because if you
have a long movie, that might not be the
| | 00:27 | best way to go.
| | 00:28 | So, let's go back here, at 1.
| | 00:32 | So, I might go here, and this
little icon here it says Markers.
| | 00:35 | I'm going to click the arrow
and choose Set Menu Marker.
| | 00:39 | It's going to open up the Menu
Marker dialog box at 3 frames in.
| | 00:43 | I'm going to type Intro and leave
everything else to default as a scene marker.
| | 00:49 | If we had a Motion Menu button, we'd
check that, but we don't. So, we'll click
| | 00:54 | OK, and there's that.
| | 00:56 | And let's go ahead a little bit, and
I'm going to make one here, because
| | 01:01 | that's my niece.
| | 01:02 | So, we'll go menu marker, and we'll
put braces, and we're going to click OK.
| | 01:10 | Let's go ahead a little bit, and
right here I'm going to do my interview.
| | 01:15 | So, I'm going to type in "Alina Interview."
| | 01:19 | Click OK and let's go through that.
| | 01:28 | And right here I'm going to type in "Performance."
| | 01:32 | So, we'll set another menu marker
there, and this is the performance.
| | 01:37 | There we go, and that's it.
| | 01:40 | We're going to leave everything else alone.
| | 01:42 | So, now we've got all my menu
markers and I can make my DVD.
| | 01:45 | So, I can go to Share and now I
can just click on Burn DVD to Disc.
| | 01:51 | So, we'll click on that. And I can
literally just go click on my DVD.
| | 01:56 | I've got a disk in.
| | 01:57 | It's telling me it's ready.
| | 01:58 | I would change the name here to The
Dance, and I can just click Burn and it'll
| | 02:05 | make a DVD that I can just stick into a
DVD player and it'll play automatically.
| | 02:10 | But I did add chapter
markers and I do want to see those,
| | 02:14 | s, let's add a menu.
| | 02:17 | And so before we burn, let's go into Disc Menus.
| | 02:21 | This is where you'd find all of your
premade content, all your templates to make
| | 02:25 | DVD menus and submenus.
| | 02:27 | We only have one currently installed,
but Elements 10 ships with a lot of menus.
| | 02:32 | It's on an extra content disc;
| | 02:34 | you can also download it from
adobe.com and add more content here.
| | 02:38 | So, we're going to use this one, and
I'm going to click Apply, and now here
| | 02:43 | are our menus.
| | 02:44 | I'm going to need to change the movie title.
| | 02:46 | I'm going to leave Play and Scenes
alone, and I'm going to add something right here.
| | 02:52 | So, I'm going to go in this button here
and choose Browse, and we'll pick a nice
| | 02:57 | dancing picture here.
| | 02:59 | We'll choose OK and there's my
dancing photo. It looks great. And then right
| | 03:05 | above it is my text item.
| | 03:07 | Let's double-click on this.
| | 03:10 | The Dance, we'll call it. Click OK
and I'm going to leave the rest alone.
| | 03:16 | So, let's test this out.
| | 03:17 | Let's choose Preview right here.
| | 03:20 | Here's our photo.
| | 03:21 | I can press play, but let's
go to the Scene area first.
| | 03:24 | We'll check out the scenes, and
here they are: Intro, Braces, Alina
| | 03:28 | Interview, Performances.
| | 03:30 | So, I can click on her interview--
| | 03:32 | (Alina: What I think is great about EDN is that we're
providing students with an opportunity.)
| | 03:38 | --and I can exit. I can also just choose Auto-play to
see the whole thing, and we're good to go.
| | 03:43 | So, now we're able to apply
this and use it on our DVD menu.
| | 03:47 | So, let's go back to Share and The
Dance and click on Burn, and there we go.
| | 03:59 | So creating the DVD in
Elements 10 is quick to do.
| | 04:02 | The process actually takes a little
time when you're actually burning the DVD though.
| | 04:07 | Be prepared to wait for a few moments.
| | 04:10 | So, Elements 10 is a powerful program
that allows you to export to DVD formats
| | 04:15 | to view on any DVD player.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Creating Blu-ray Discs, DVDs, and web DVDs| 00:00 | So we just created a DVD that we can
show all of our friends, but Adobe Premiere
| | 00:04 | Elements also gives you another
option, and that is to export a web DVD.
| | 00:10 | And let me show you how that works.
| | 00:11 | So here's our Timeline.
| | 00:13 | One thing we're not going
to do is add any markers;
| | 00:16 | we're going to see what happens if we
don't do that, and we're not going to add a menu.
| | 00:19 | So let's take a look.
We'll click on Share.
| | 00:23 | The first item here says Build web
DVD for viewing online or on a PC, so
| | 00:28 | let's take a look.
| | 00:30 | So we get this menu that comes up that
says we're missing the Disc menu and we
| | 00:34 | are required to have one.
| | 00:36 | So we're going to have to click OK.
| | 00:39 | And that's going to take us back
into our Disc Menu selection area.
| | 00:43 | We would have more templates here.
| | 00:44 | We could easily just pick and choose,
but we've got one, so we're going to use
| | 00:47 | this one. And we'll just drag it in.
| | 00:49 | Now we've got another menu that
says we're missing our menu markers.
| | 00:55 | And what are we going to do?
| | 00:56 | Do we want them to create it automatically?
| | 00:57 | So let's say Yes on this one. And
here's another menu that tells us do we
| | 01:02 | want to set them at each scene,
every so many minutes, and how many total
| | 01:06 | markers do we want?
| | 01:08 | It could literally do hundreds of
markers if you leave it at every scene,
| | 01:12 | so I'm going to say Total Markers I
want maybe 4, and then we'll press OK.
| | 01:19 | So we're back to this screen again,
which you should be familiar with, and we're
| | 01:22 | going to Browse and choose our photo
again, and then we're going to preview it.
| | 01:28 | But before, take a look here.
We have all these menu buttons.
| | 01:32 | If I double-click on one, it has no
name here, so we may not want to use this one.
| | 01:38 | But what's cool is we can actually drag this.
| | 01:40 | So I can bring them back to
the way I wanted them before.
| | 01:43 | So I can go here, double-click, and choose Intro.
| | 01:48 | I can go back here, move my playhead.
| | 01:53 | We'll go out of this for one
second and come back after.
| | 01:57 | And we'll go to our playhead here,
and we'll go move that marker over and
| | 02:02 | double-click, and we'll type in "Braces."
| | 02:06 | We'll move this one over, type in "Interview."
| | 02:13 | And the last marker actually went
on the Performance, so that was good.
| | 02:17 | 3 out of 4 were not, and 1 was good.
| | 02:20 | We'll take that.
| | 02:21 | We'll just type in Performance and
we'll click OK, and then we'll go back into
| | 02:28 | that Disc Menus and let's
just test it first. Preview.
| | 02:32 | We need to change the movie title.
| | 02:34 | Here are our scenes once again: Intro,
Braces, Interview, and Performance. And I
| | 02:41 | need to go change the menu title,
| | 02:43 | so we'll exit out of here and we'll go
and choose Title, double-click on it, and
| | 02:49 | this is called The Dance. Click OK.
| | 02:53 | Let's preview it one more time, and there it is.
| | 02:56 | If I press play, it automatically plays.
| | 03:04 | So this looks great, so I'm done with this.
| | 03:06 | I'm going to go back to Share, and
we're going to build our web DVD.
| | 03:11 | So do I want to save this into a
folder on a computer or upload it
| | 03:14 | to photoshop.com?
| | 03:16 | So I don't have a membership to photoshop.com.
| | 03:19 | I'm going to save it onto my folder, and
I'll show you what happens after that.
| | 03:23 | Do I want it to be high
definition or standard def?
| | 03:26 | I'm just going to choose Standard Def
High Quality on this one, and I'm going to
| | 03:31 | call this DanceWeb so I can
differentiate, and we're going to put it on the
| | 03:36 | folder on the desktop.
| | 03:38 | So I'm going to type in web,
Choose, and we're ready to go.
| | 03:44 | Let's press Build.
| | 03:49 | Okay, so our build is completed.
| | 03:51 | Let's take a look at what it looks like.
| | 03:53 | We can actually click on the link here.
| | 03:55 | (clip playing)
| | 04:01 | I'm going to mute that out for a second,
but this is an HTML file that includes
| | 04:06 | this disc menu, and I go to
Scenes and there it is as well.
| | 04:12 | So now one thing to know is that once
you have your web DVD ready, we need to
| | 04:17 | upload certain files to the Internet,
to your own domain name or your own
| | 04:21 | server, to make them really work,
so let's see where they are.
| | 04:25 | So I'm going to minimize Premiere, and
we're going to go into this folder we made
| | 04:30 | called web, and let's just see what's inside.
| | 04:32 | So we've got DanceWeb, and
there are all these files.
| | 04:37 | Here are all of our movie chapters,
here's the HTML file that plays the web DVD,
| | 04:44 | and here's our scene menus.
| | 04:46 | And if I double-click on this,
that's going to open up our browser.
| | 04:50 | We're going to need this file to play this.
| | 04:55 | We can change this file name,
because everything is going to connect;
| | 04:59 | don't worry about that.
| | 05:00 | But you want this to be on maybe,
it's davidbasulto.com/playthedanceweb or
| | 05:06 | whatever I decide to call it.
| | 05:08 | So all those files need to be up there.
| | 05:10 | It needs to be in a direct path.
| | 05:11 | If you're uploading the folder we have
called DanceWeb--and let's just take a
| | 05:15 | look at that--this DanceWeb folder,
| | 05:18 | that's absolutely fine as well.
| | 05:19 | So we can do DanceWeb folder, forward
slash, whatever we name this, and we can
| | 05:24 | absolutely just leave it alone if
you'd like to, just to play it safe.
| | 05:28 | And it'll play online and
everyone will be able to get to it.
| | 05:31 | So Premiere Elements allows you to share
this as a web DVD, but remember, you do
| | 05:36 | need to have a server or some kind
of web hosting to play it online.
| | 05:40 | You can also just copy this whole folder,
drag it into another computer or your
| | 05:45 | laptop if you want to take it with you,
and it'll play off of that as well.

|
11. Exporting and Sharing MoviesSharing your project to YouTube| 00:00 | So you just edited your film and you
want to get it out there on the web and
| | 00:04 | show everybody your awesome creation.
| | 00:06 | So how do we do that in Elements 10?
| | 00:09 | Let's go over here to the Share button,
and we've already covered disc DVDs, and
| | 00:15 | we're going to go into the
next menu, which is Online.
| | 00:18 | And when I go here, I've got some choices.
| | 00:21 | I can go to photoshop.com, if you
remember, Facebook, and YouTube, and lastly
| | 00:28 | there is Podbean, if this
is a podcast you are making.
| | 00:31 | So we are going to go to YouTube,
because actually, I can put this up on YouTube
| | 00:36 | and make sure that it shares on a
Facebook, so I can kill two birds with one
| | 00:40 | stone if I would like.
| | 00:41 | And within the presets here, you
have several different presets you can choose from.
| | 00:46 | Since this is just standard-
definition footage, I really don't need High
| | 00:50 | Definition, because it's not
going to scale up very well.
| | 00:54 | So I am just going to keep
it on Flash Video for YouTube.
| | 00:58 | And I want to click Share Work Bar
Area Only, and what is the work bar?
| | 01:02 | We go back into our Timeline.
| | 01:05 | This gray bar is the work bar.
| | 01:08 | If I pulled it out here, I'm adding black video;
| | 01:12 | there is nothing at there,
because that's the work area.
| | 01:16 | So you want to make sure your work area
is exactly to the end of your video, and
| | 01:21 | we are going to share that work bar
only, and we are going to press Next.
| | 01:26 | And now I have got to sign in. And I
am going to call this The Dance and
| | 01:34 | describe it, Santa Barbara's
Awesome Dance Company, and Tags.
| | 01:45 | I am also going to put dance,
and I want to add Santa Barbara.
| | 01:52 | And that's a nonprofit, so yeah, I am
going to leave it at Nonprofit, but I
| | 01:56 | can choose other things here if I
would like to, so we will leave that alone,
| | 02:00 | and choose Next.
| | 02:02 | And do I want the public to view this?
| | 02:04 | Well, yes, because I actually want to
get some publicity for them, and this is
| | 02:08 | copyrighted material.
| | 02:09 | There are all these different
disclaimers, but if you're a member of YouTube,
| | 02:12 | it's pretty standard.
| | 02:14 | And we will click Share, and now
we'll see it being rendered and uploaded.
| | 02:20 | So our share is complete, our video
has been uploaded, and you can see here,
| | 02:23 | there's the address.
| | 02:24 | We can click on that and go see it, and
we can go back and make some more videos.
| | 02:30 | So as you see in Elements 10, you can
easily share your creations with the world.

| Sharing your project to a video file| 00:00 | Okay, so we've shared with the world on
YouTube and now we want to make a file
| | 00:04 | that we can put on our computer. Maybe
we're going to take our laptop somewhere.
| | 00:08 | We want to show everybody our
wonderful video here. So let's take a look at
| | 00:12 | how to do that.
| | 00:14 | So once again, we were in the Share--and
let me just go back a second--and we chose
| | 00:17 | Computer. And let's look at our
different choices here. So we've got Flash Video
| | 00:23 | that we can export as as an F4V file,
FLV as well, and there are some web design
| | 00:30 | programs out there that you may be using,
and you can just drag on this file into
| | 00:34 | that, so they can play on your web site.
| | 00:37 | MPEG is great to keep a hard-drive copy
of, because you might want to make more
| | 00:42 | DVD later, and you don't have to re-render.
| | 00:43 | You can just drag that onto a DVD-
burning program and create DVDs.
| | 00:49 | AVCHD, this is a new addition to
Elements 10, and it's a great archiving format.
| | 00:54 | It's a high-definition format, and
there are some great presents here.
| | 00:57 | Let's take a look.
| | 01:00 | We can not only just go into the M2T,
which is their format, but there is a
| | 01:04 | MPEG4, which is a really great codec.
| | 01:07 | If you have TiVo at home, you can make
a TiVo NTSC, which is a North American
| | 01:11 | Standard or you can make a high-
definition version. And once again, here's
| | 01:16 | Vimeo HD and YouTube HD, and Vimeo is
a video sharing site on the web that's
| | 01:21 | really popular and really has a great
user interface as well, so we have all these options.
| | 01:27 | Let's go a little further.
| | 01:30 | The next is QuickTime, so if you want
to make a QuickTime file for our hard
| | 01:34 | drive just to keep it there and play whenever.
| | 01:36 | Default is NTSC, DV. It's
got 16:9 and other views.
| | 01:41 | You can also go into advanced here,
if you want to get really technical, and
| | 01:46 | maybe let's make it widescreen, 16:9.
And then I can choose a different codec so
| | 01:51 | if you're familiar with them. I'm not
going to go over all of the codecs, but
| | 01:55 | there is quite a bit.
| | 01:56 | The animation, for example, is a
mastering codec and your file sizes will
| | 02:00 | be ginormous.
| | 02:01 | So if you are going to go in here and
play around, start with like an H.264
| | 02:06 | and work your way around from there.
| | 02:07 | You can also change audio, so there is
lot of options here to customize your
| | 02:12 | work. And let see what's next.
| | 02:18 | Image file here, so if you had a line
of image sequences, different photos, you
| | 02:22 | wanted to make an image sequence, you
can just use those to export, and it gives
| | 02:27 | you a couple of presets for that as
well. And then audio, let's say you just
| | 02:30 | want the audio only. Maybe you want
people to hear you're doing some kind of
| | 02:34 | documentary and the audio would be
great to listen to on your iPhone or
| | 02:39 | something on the way to work, so you
can export that right there. And here are
| | 02:43 | the different presets.
| | 02:45 | I would stick with the MP3 or the AIFF
for compatibility. And then of course,
| | 02:50 | you change your file name and
where you're going to save it.
| | 02:52 | So let's go back and find something we
want to save. I want to go make an AVCHD.
| | 02:56 | I'm going to choose the Vimeo HD format.
| | 03:00 | I think it's a pretty popular and
standard format that we can save and
| | 03:04 | archive things in.
| | 03:05 | It renders out really smooth file, and
the file size is pretty contained as
| | 03:09 | well, so let's keep that.
| | 03:10 | I could also upload it later on
| | 03:12 | if I want to go up to a file sharing
site, and it's already pre-rendered,
| | 03:15 | so let's take a look.
| | 03:16 | So I'm going to change this to thedance,
and we'll just save this on the desktop.
| | 03:26 | And I'm going to do, once again, the
WorkArea Bar Only. And I could go into the
| | 03:31 | Advanced settings and change things
here, but by the default this look pretty
| | 03:35 | good. And we'll press Save,
and now it's rendering it out.
| | 03:42 | So as you can see, we've
successfully saved, so let's take a look at our
| | 03:46 | awesome video render.
| | 03:47 | So I'm going to minimize Elements 10
by clicking this button right here, and
| | 03:52 | here it is on the desktop.
| | 03:54 | Let's see what it looks like.
| | 03:55 | I'll double-click on it, and there
it is in high-definition glory, and
| | 04:00 | we'll press play.
| | 04:01 | (clip playing)
| | 04:31 | So there we go. It looked great!
| | 04:33 | Let's go back and get Premiere back up
here. And that's all you need to do to
| | 04:37 | save your movie out to a file
that you can access later.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Sharing your project to a mobile device| 00:00 | So we've shared our video online using YouTube.
| | 00:03 | So now we're going to export our movie
into a mobile phone or mobile device,
| | 00:07 | such as an iPad. So let's
take a look at how we do that.
| | 00:10 | In the share area, we're going to
click on Mobile Phone and Players. And
| | 00:14 | we've got some different options here,
so the first one is the Apple iPad, iPhone, iPod.
| | 00:19 | We can go to the next
one, which is Audio Podcast.
| | 00:23 | We have Sony PSP, which is the
PlayStation Portable, and we have Mobile Phone,
| | 00:29 | which might be like a Nokia phone or something.
| | 00:32 | So we're going to send it out to the
iPad, so I'm going to select that one and
| | 00:37 | choose File Presets here, and
take a look at what we have.
| | 00:40 | So I don't think this is too big of a
file, so I am going to choose Apple's iPad
| | 00:45 | Widescreen High Quality, and we'll
keep that. And I'm going to name this
| | 00:48 | thedance, and then I'm going to do
_iPadHQ, so I know exactly what it is.
| | 00:56 | I am going to go back to the Browse
button and put it on my Desktop. And then of
| | 01:03 | course I am going to do the Share Work
Area Only, but I'm not going to really
| | 01:06 | go into Advanced, because I don't need to
mess around with any of this right now,
| | 01:09 | although I do see that my file size is
only 10 megabytes, so that's great. And
| | 01:14 | we're just going to click Save,
and it's going to render it out.
| | 01:17 | So there you have it, Save Complete. Our
video has been successfully saved. Once
| | 01:23 | again let's go up here and minimize this,
and here it is on the desktop, and we
| | 01:28 | just drag into our iPad or into iTunes
to put it on our iPad, and we're good to go.
| | 01:32 | So as you can see, Elements 10 has a
lot of great sharing options, and iPad is
| | 01:38 | one of them.
