Video: Setting up a new account

Before you can get started using Pinterest, you need to first join and create an account. In previous times, you had to be invited to join Pinterest, but now Pinterest is open to everyone. So once you access the site by going to www.pinterest.com, you can click the big red Join button at the top. Once you click Join, you are going to be taken to this screen where it says Complete Step 1 of 2, Create your account to explore Pinterest. Right off the bat it appears that you only have two options, using Facebook or Twitter to sign in. However, if you look beneath that, there is actually a small window that says "or, sign up with your email address." So if you don't have a Facebook or a Twitter account or if you don't want to use your Facebook or Twitter account to sign in to Pinterest, you can always use an email address down here at the bottom.

Setting up a new account

I am going to use Facebook. Once I click on the Facebook button, it's actually going to take me out to Facebook and sign me in, and it's going to ask me to go to the app. Once you click Go to App, that should redirect you back to Pinterest. It will tell you that it is connected as whomever you are, and then you can set your name. In order to set up your account, you have to first fill out a username. The username is just what you are going to be represented by on the site. So in this case I'll just do justinslynda. Enter in my email address.

Now I have to choose a Pinterest password. Directly underneath that you can choose to automatically follow recommended friends, so if you have Facebook friends that are already on Pinterest, it will automatically follow those people for you. I'm not real keen on that though, so I am going to uncheck that box. And then finally, once you're finished with that, you can create your account. Once you have created your account, Pinterest is going to come up and tell you that they need your help personalizing Pinterest to your interests. So basically, they give you a bunch of pictures. What you are going to do is scroll through these pictures and anything that you find interesting, you're going to click on.

So for instance this tablet device looks cool to me. That desert looks tasty. I like the shower design here. I like that little watercolor painting, and that watch is pretty cool. And so once I have all of these filled out, you'll notice that a Continue button appears. If I click the Continue button, it's then going to jump me to Pinterest and it's going to show me things based on those interests that it thinks that I might like. You will also notice at the top a yellow bar that says, "Please verify your email address." Whatever the email address was that you used during the signup phase, go check that now and also check your spam folder for an email from Pinterest.

In that email will be a hyperlink which you can click on, which will then confirm your email address to Pinterest to let them know you are who you say you are, and then you can come back and start using the service.
