Photoshop CS5 for Photographers provides comprehensive Photoshop training targeting the needs of photographers. Because Refine Edge really is quite powerful, let's take a look at another example where Refine Edge can help us out. Here, I have another portrait of this world-class athlete, Chris Lieto. Let's say that what we want to do is make a selection of his shirt. Well, let's do that by navigating to Color Range. And you know that whenever you use Color Range, typically it's a good idea to first select the color that you know you'll be working with. So I'll press the I key in order to select the Eyedropper. And then we'll click somewhere on the shirt, so that that color is in our foreground color here.
Next, we'll navigate to Select and choose Color Range. This will start off with a pretty decent selection. I'll go ahead and grab my plus icon Eyedropper. I'm going to go ahead and click and drag over this image, trying to build this selection up. Increase the fuzziness there a little bit, and again, just looking to build this out just a touch. Okay, well, so far so good. I have a pretty decent selection. Let's go ahead and click OK. Well, a lot of times what happens is we think, yeah, this selection will work. But then we think, perhaps we could dig deeper.
Perhaps we could do more with this. Well, all that we need to do is go to any of our Selection tools. Notice currently I'm in the Eyedropper. We'll select any of these tools here. How about the Lasso tool? That then opens up the option for Refine Edge. Let's click on that option so that we can see the shirt here. Now one of the things that I see is that while the selection is decent, it has a few problems. So here's what we're going to do. We're going to go ahead and click on Smart Radius and then increase the Radius. You notice that that balked out my edges a little bit.
I'm also going to add more Contrast here, again, building up a much better selection. As far as the Feathering, I do want to little bit of softening and smoothing on the edges, so I'm going to go ahead and add that. And then I have this tool here, which allows me to refine the Radius of my edges. And I'll go ahead and click and drag on a couple of edges here, where I know that I need a little bit more detail. And I'll make my way through that, and it's going to build those out just a little bit better for me. Well, now we have a really good selection. Let's take a look at where it was before.
Here was the original selection what we thought was good. Now here's this one. So much better. Now at this juncture, what we can do is we can output this selection in a couple of different ways. So far, we've looked at just outputting to a selection. But you can also output this to say a New layer. Well, let's try that option. Well, now that this is on a new layer, I'll go ahead and click OK. And then here you can see we have the t-shirt on its own layer. At this juncture we could get pretty creative.
Let's turn on the Background layer visibility so we can see that. What kind of things could we do here? Well, for starters, we could click in the Background layer, navigate to Image > Adjustments, and then Hue/Saturation, and here we could simply desaturate the image so that everything is desaturated except for the shirt on the layer above. All right. Well let's click Cancel. Another thing that we could do perhaps would be to click in the t-shirt layer. And then navigate to Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation or for that matter any of these different types of Adjustments.
But let's just do Hue/Saturation, because that's simple, and then we could make a change to the shirt in this way, dragging it one way or another, or sometimes just working on the Saturation. Now so far what we're looking at is some really creative, big, huge type of changes. You know, other times what you'll do is perhaps select a particular area, and then you may just subtly modify the Hue one way or another. Perhaps because the way that it was captured, it didn't quite capture the color you were interested in. Or sometimes you'll find that certain colors will be oversaturated.
So just by bringing those down can, create a distinct or interesting look. Or in other scenarios, perhaps you just want to have a few options. And in this case, let's say we have this color shirt. We'll click OK. Well, now here we have two options: the original and then also another option that we've modified. So as you're starting to discover, this Refine Edge dialog is incredibly powerful. If you haven't ever experimented with it on your own images, I definitely recommend that you do so, because it takes a little bit of tinkering to figure it out.
But once you figure it out, it will soon become something that you're going to use quite often.
