Photoshop CS4 for Photographers is an essential course for any digital photographer who wants to master the software's vast array of image enhancement techniques. Now that we have been introduced to the Burn and Dodge tools, let's go ahead and continue to work with them. We will be working on this file mom and daughter, double-click that to open it up in Photoshop. Press F to go to Full Screen View mode, and then double- click the Zoom tool to take the image to 100%. Here we are going to go ahead and double-click the Adjustments tab. So we can close that and really focus in on the layer. And here we have this great moment and I just love the expression. I like the tenderness, the fact that their eyes are closed. I don't know. There is just something about it. One of the things that I'm noticing is that the eyes are a little bit too dark, there is a little bit too much of brightness on the forehead and the nose, and so I want to improve that.
So, I'll copy this layer and I'll call this layer burn and dodge. Next I'll select one of my tools; I'll go ahead and select the Dodge tool because we haven't use that yet. I'm going to control the Midtones; for the Exposure, I want to bring this down, protect the tones. And all that I'm interested in doing here is painting in some of these darker areas or brightening up some of these darker areas. So I'm going to go ahead and decrease my brush size. I did that with the Left Bracket key, and now I'm painting on some of these shadow areas, a little bit smaller brush there to get into those areas, over here on this eye as well, I want to brighten that up just a touch there, subtly bringing in some light to those areas. Let's look at our before and after, before and after. Again, pretty subtle but just bringing in nice amount of light.
Now if we want to go further with that, we would increase the overall intensity of that. We could bring in even more light. So I'll go ahead and increase that, so that you can see this one, before and after. So now that went pretty far, in my opinion too far. Now hopefully you are able to see my subtle adjustments. I'll go back to those. Here is our after and here is our before. All right, well the next step is to work with the Highlight. We know how to do that, right. We will select this tool, the Dodge tool. Now rather than clicking on it in the toolbox, here is what you can do. Press the O key, then Shift+O that will take you to the Dodge tool. Exposure, we want to have something pretty low as well, 20% protect our tones. I want a pretty big brush here. So what I'm looking to do is just to paint some real broad brush strokes, much smaller on the nose obviously. And then, over here on the cheek a little bit as well and then down on the chin.
I'll go back to the forehead and a little bit more darkening to the forehead there. And I'm looking to just try to bring off the shine, just a touch. And the nice thing about doing this on a layer is that I can turn this on and off or lower the Opacity in order to get this to be just right. A little bit lower Exposure here, again just darken this up a little bit more. Let's look at our before and after. Okay, well so far so good. We are going in a good direction, before and after, and then again, we can always lower the Opacity to find that sweet spot. So that we can just get that in just the right place so that we are enhancing the image. We are not drawing attention to the areas that we burn and dodge.
I think that looks really good. I want to zoom out a little bit, before and after. And a lot of times, I'll zoom out in order to evaluate, zoom back in to look at the details, look at my edges. And in this case, I'll say to myself, you know what; I think that looks pretty good. The only other thing I might want to do is work on the hair up here. So I'll go ahead and just darken that up, just a touch there, increase my Exposure, just bring that down. Again, I want this to be a little bit more about the tenderness of the expression, and I'm able to make it more about that by darkening some tones with burning and then brightening a few other tones with dodging. So as you can see and as you can now imagine, these tools are quite powerful. And the trick is really practicing with these tools and working on your images in order to darken or brighten different aspects of your images.
All right, well now that we have talked about burning and dodging with these two tools, let's take a look at a couple of other Burn and Dodge techniques, and we will do that in the next few movies.
