In this document you can see I have got a text layer with a layer style applied to it. We'll go ahead and zoom up so you can actually see what style is. It's just a simple drop shadow. And normally when you double-click on a layer like an image layer with pixels that opens up the Layer Style dialog box where you get access to all the other styles. Of course the styles that you have applied to the layer are check-marked, but then you can always create and turn on other styles there. Let's go ahead and cancel. The problem here though is if I double- click on the type layer, that actually has a different behavior because it's not on the image layer. That actually selects the text in that layer and switches you to your text one, so I'm going to hit the Escape key to get out of there and press the V key to get back to the Move tool.
So if you want to get to the Layer Style dialog box for a layer other than an image layer, so like a type layer or a Smart Object or an adjustment layer or any other type of layer there, hold down the Option key or the Alt key on Windows and then double-click on the layer thumbnail and that will take you to the Layer Style dialog box just as if it were an image layer as well, okay. The other trick there is if there is a particular effect that you want to jump to, if you turn down the Effects icon on the layer itself and double-click on the actual let's say drop shadow here, that will also open up the dialog box and select the effect that you double- clicked on. So in this case Drop Shadow.
If I go to one of these image layers, where there is also a Stroke, if I double-click on Stroke, you will see that it opens up the Layer Style dialog and takes you to the Stroke section automatically. So just some convenient shortcuts there on how to access the Layer Style dialog box.
