In this chapter, we've started to talk about how we can make shape and structural changes to our portraits. And this type of portrait retouching, it's kind of tricky to navigate; it's kind of tough to know how far to go. So here what I am going to do is share with you a few ideas that might help you think about how you want to apply these changes to your own photographs. One of the first things that I consider is my intent with that picture, and also the genre of the photography. In other words, if I'm capturing a portrait for journalism, well, I am not going to make any of these adjustments at all.
On the other side of the spectrum, if I am capturing an image for a high fashion magazine, well, I am gong to make more adjustments. I also like to think about, how would I retouch this portrait if that person were sitting next to me, looking over my shoulder? And by thinking about that, many times it helps me, or it prevents me from over-exaggerating. It's so easy to over-exaggerate when you're making these shape or structural changes. The last thing that I do is I show my pictures to a colleague, or a friend, and I ask them, well, what do you think? And if ever they say, Chris, it's a great picture, but I think you went a little too far here, then I definitely have.
So what I hope for you is that, as you seek to get better at making shape and structural changes to your own portraits, that you can use these techniques, so that your overall retouching will look that much better.
