Here I want to share with you a technique that you can use to quickly and easily whiten teeth. For this technique, all that's required is a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer, and then a custom mask the we'll build using Color Range. All right! Well, let's start off by clicking on the icon for Hue/Saturation to create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. Next, before we start working with our sliders and controls, let's go over to the Masks. With the mask, what we want to do is we want to build a mask, so that we can then just modify the teeth.
To do that, we'll use Color Range. Click on the Color Range button to open up the Color Range dialog, and then with your Eyedropper, click on the teeth. In doing that, you can see it's starting to build a selection of that area of our photograph. Yet, the problem is that you can also see the other areas; these areas that are white or gray are also selected as well. To correct this, we are going to turn on Localized Color Clusters. Then we're going to decrease the Range. You can see that, as we decrease the Range, now it's just the teeth which are selected.
Next, we need to add to the selections, because I don't have all of the teeth selected here. So you can either hold down the Shift key, and click on more of the teeth, or you can use the icon with the plus next to it, and then you can go ahead and click on the other areas of the teeth here. In doing that, as we click around, and build up the selection, we're also adding more to the selection as well. Again, we can then decrease these sliders; we can decrease the Fuzziness, and also the Range, until we have a pretty good selection of the teeth. It's not going to be perfect, but it will be a nice starting point.
All right; well here, we go ahead and modify these amounts just a little bit, until I can see that I have primarily the teeth selected there. I'll hold down the Shift key, and I'll click and drag across that part of the image. Next step, click OK. Now that we have that mask, we're going to then go back to the Hue/Saturation adjustment. Here, we'll use the Targeted Adjustment tool. You can click on this tool, and then click on the yellow of the teeth, and drag to the left. In doing that, we can than desaturate this part of the image.
How far we drag will determine how much yellow we remove. So here, I'll go ahead and drag to the left to remove a lot of that yellow. Then we can click on the eye icon to see our before and after. Here's the before; you notice the teeth are really yellow. Click on this again, you can see the after, and there it is; a really quick and easy technique that you can use in order to whiten teeth.
