Every once a while Photoshop may just start doing things you don't expect. I mean, every application kind of does this and sometimes there's a redraw error. Just doing something whacky that you don't expect. Now when you call tech-support or you go to an online forum, they typically tell you the first thing to do is to throw away the Preferences file and start from scratch. The only problem is where is that magical Preference file? You are going to do around your directory there and try to find it. So the good news is that there is a very easy way to do this at launch. You just need to know the secret handshake. Well, that secret handshake is to hold down Command+Option+Shift or Ctrl+Alt+Shift as you launch Photoshop. So basically hold down the entire left-hand side of your keyboard.
So wherever you are going to launch the app on the Mac, it's going to be from probably the OS X dock bar. If you are on a Windows machine it might be the Task Bar, wherever you are launching Photoshop from. So you hold these three keys down and you click on the app to launch it. At some point you will see this dialog box. Once you see this dialog box, you can let go of the keys and it says, hey, do you want me to delete those Photoshop settings? Well, yes I do, thank you very much, thanks for asking. Go and click Yes. Photoshop will now be restored to its out-of-the-box experience. So there you go. Reset your Prefs by holding down those three keys as you launch the application and it just takes case of the housekeeping for you.
