So did you know there are actually two different types of text boxes inside Photoshop? Let me explain. I get the Type tool. Press T for the Type tool. If you just click in your image with the Text tool, you have created what's called point text. Let me explain what that means. So this is point text. You must press the Return key when you want a line break. Otherwise it's just going to keep typing forever and ever until even the text goes off the screen.
So if I want to apply that, I'll press the Enter key here. If you want paragraph text, meaning text that will break when it reaches the end of the line, you click-and-drag, and you define a text box by dragging and there is the bounding box as you drag. So now you see an actual border around your text box, and so now when you type, this is paragraph text. You can see when you get to the edge of that box, it actually wraps down to the next line. Because you see a bounding box, you can actually while you are in the Type tool, actually go to the edge and click on a corner-handle or a side-handle and resize that text box, and you'll see that the text will re-break within the new text box size The other evidence is if you hold down the Make Better key, the Option key.
So first I'm going to apply this. I'll hit the Enter key. When you hold down the Make Better key, Option on a Mac, Alt on a Windows, and click with the Text tool, it actually lets you define the text box ahead of time. So if you happen to know you need let's say 4 inch, I'm just going to override the default measurement system here, 4 in by 3 in. Notice that when I hit the Tab key, it converts my number to the current measurement system. So it just overrides that. Click OK, and I get that box ahead of time. So just kind of a nice convenience. When you know you want a certain text box size, you can go ahead and just enter that in by Option or Alt Clicking as you type.
Now, the other thing that's nice too is that when you put your mouse outside the text container, you get a Move tool. So you can reposition that text when you have a paragraph text container. If it's not in the right location, you can just move it while you are still in the Text tool. Now, I'll just hit Enter to apply that.
