For people who have been using Photoshop for years, the Adjustments panel in CS4 is pretty big change from using the modal dialogs in the past and there are a few things that they're used to having in their Curves dialog that they wish they could have in the Curves adjustment and I'm going to show you how to get some of those back. So if I click on Curves adjustment layer here at the top of the Adjustments panel, the first thing that some people have complained about is that this is a very small grid. The whole panel itself is much smaller than the corresponding Curves dialog and just for contrast let me open up Image > Adjustments > Curves and you'll see what I mean.
The size is lot larger when it's a dialog. Now that's both a plus and a minus. For me it takes up big part of my screen. I have to set here and move this thing around. So I don't really like it this big anyway. But for those people who want to get it bigger. If you look at the bottom of the Adjustments panel, there is this little tiny icon here at the bottom that looks like a small folder going to a big folder. I think that is supposed to represent a panel with its little tab there. So if I click that that increases the size of the Adjustment panel. Now because the Adjustment panel is docked with other panels the entire dock gets wider as well. So this is a toggle you can go back and forth.
I have not seen a keyboard shortcut to toggle this. So I think you have to do it manually. But at least you have that option there if you want this curve to be bigger. The other complaint is there was this option to make the grid finer in the Curves dialog. Right now you see a grid line every 25% in the tonal range there. If you hold the Option key down or the Alt key on Windows and click anywhere in the grid, you can get a finer grid. And this is the same shortcut that works in the dialog box as well. So Option- click on the grid changes the grid to 10% increments instead of 25% increments.
So just makes it easier to shift dots or points on a curve to a particular line on the graph by having a finer grid. So those are the two different view options available to you. Even though it's a panel instead of a dialog now.
