One of the things that you might want to do when you are working with multiple documents is sometimes share or copy a layer from one document to the other. Here I have got my documents opened up as floating documents, each in its own window. So it's pretty straightforward. You just can drag and drop from one document window to the other. To do that, I'll just click in this layer here, this image and drag this layer over to the other document. When I let go, it comes into that document just like so. So pretty straightforward. However, when you have a document that's got lots of different layers, you might want to be more careful than that.
So you've the option of also using the Layers panel and seeing which layer specifically you want to drag. So if I had ten layers here, you want to make sure that the layer you are dragging is indeed the layer that you want to take over. So Photoshop allows you to do that with floating documents. I can just grab the layer itself and drag it over to the other document and when I let go, it gets dropped in as its own layer. I'm going to undo that, Command+Z, Ctrl+Z. There is a slight tweak here when you've got documents consolidated into a single tabbed document window, let's go ahead and do that with the Arrange Document widget, we'll Consolidate All that's that first option there and we'll bring this document to the front by clicking its tab.
I can no longer drag from the Layers panel between tabbed documents. I have to do it from the Image window. If I try to drag the layer from the Layers panel itself, when I drop it over on the tab, that tab won't come to the front. Okay, so if I let go, it's not going to do anything. If I want to bring this layer in, I have to make sure that I do it from the Image window. So you just have to pay attention to the Layers panel to make sure that that is indeed the layer that you want. And then when you start dragging up to that tab, after a slight pause, that tab will come to the front. I can then reposition it exactly where I want it and drop it into another document.
So just a light twist. When you've got tabbed documents, drag from the image not from the Layers panel.
