Photoshop CS4 for Photographers is an essential course for any digital photographer who wants to master the software's vast array of image enhancement techniques. Professional photographer and instructor Chris Orwig uses his own compelling images to demonstrate how the power of Photoshop can make photographers more passionate about their work. He covers many aspects of the application, such as working with RAW images, using curves and levels, making images snap, and enhancing bland photographs by converting them to black and white. In this movie we are working on the file corwig_boat.tif so that we can further dig into making adjustments on our images using the Adjustments panel. In an addition to another adjustment, it's actually quite helpful. Let's go ahead and double-click this file and open it up in Photoshop, press F to go to Full Screen View mode and then double-click the Adjustments layer tab so we can really focus in on what we have here. All right, well I zoom in a little bit more closely to this boat photo and here we have this boat and here is the original file. And what I did is I modified the color of the boat and I darkened the overall tones. I also have another Adjustment layer and this Adjustment layer is a Hue/Saturation Adjustment layer and again just having a little bit of fun with color.
Well how did I do that? I created a selection and then from that selection I created a mask and if you don't know much about masking, be sure to watch the chapter on masking. And then in the Adjustments panel, if we open that up, I went into those reds and here you can see in those reds I modified the color of the boat there. In this case, I just modified it so it was green. Well, let's double-click and close that. So now we have a couple of different options for this. Let's say that we want one more option. Well here's what we are going to do. We are going to click back to our Adjustments, we are going to choose to view the adjustment list and choose Hue/Saturation in here.
What I'm going to do is go ahead and navigate to my blues. Now, when I navigate to my blues, I'll grab my Target Adjustment tool and I'm going to click over these blues and then drag that Saturation down. Now when I drag that Saturation down, I see okay, I'm targeting the appropriate area, looks like I'm affecting the sky just a little bit. But that's kind of nice. So I can go now to that area and I can increase those blues, just so they snap a little bit. There is my before and after or I can change the color of the inside of the boat. And again I'm just trying to have a little bit of fun here; we are creating a little bit of a surreal effect. I also briefly want to bring back the topic of masking. So here I'll go ahead and click in my mask and then grab the Brush tool, press the X key in my case to paint with black because I have effected the sky here and I'll go ahead and paint with black so that adjustment doesn't effect that area.
So what I want to illustrate here is one of the things you can do is of course target specific areas but sometimes you will be effecting other areas of your image. No big deal, all you need to do is mask it off. All right, well again we are just having some fun with color, just so we have a few different color combinations here. I'm just going to go back to this red color combination. And I like this except the red is just a little bit too vibrant. So I'm going to navigate up above and click on the icon for this Hue/Saturation Adjustment layer. Double- click that, we will go into those reds and we are going to take these to zero and then our desaturation to zero and here I'm simply just going to desaturate this just a bit. So I'll drag this to the left to get it to be a little bit more of a realistic color. So now here is my before and after, just brought those tones down a bit so they are bit more in gamut, makes that blue look a little bit more interesting.
So again, all that I want to do here is begin to get you familiar with these different kind of controls, to begin to get you to think outside of the box, to begin to think what's actually possible with these different types of adjustments. Well so far so good, we have modified this image and we have had some fun with this color. Now there is one more thing that I need to do with this image. One of the things that I noticed in this that there are some dark tones in here, in particular in the boat and I want to bring those dark tones out because those are just too deep, those blacks are a little bit too black. I want to brighten that area up just a bit and we are going to look at one more adjustment that we can use which is called Shadow/ Highlights in order to fix that area of the image and we are going to do that in the next movie.
