The elusive alpha channel remains one of the most misunderstood yet powerful tools in Photoshop. Alpha channels are collections of luminance data that control the transparency of an image, and they inform just about every aspect of Photoshop. As he builds transitional blended layers, fashions a depth map, makes edge adjustments, and takes on extreme channel mixing, Omni Award-winning expert Deke McClelland teaches Photoshop users that where there's a will, there's a way. Photoshop CS3 Channels and Masks: Advanced Techniques covers mapping texture on an image, turning flesh into stone, using vector masks, working with all different channels, creating a rustic edge effect, and much more. Exercise files accompany the tutorials.

All right. So by now you've got a sense of how you can take multiple photographs of a single group of people and merge their best ingredients so that you have the best Jeff, married with the best Melody and the best Paavo and the best Megan, or in your case it might be the best Todd with the best Sarah and the best Eric and the best Jessica, what have you. But, in addition to creating this kind of standard group photo, just something you could shoot in the real world it's just that never happens to work out this wonderfully. You can also create things that are utterly and completely impossible, like this effect right here, in which we've got the best Megan, mixed with another best Megan and there's Megan and there she is again.
So we've got this crazy sort of Freaky Friday Patty Duke Show thing going, where obviously we have the same person appearing multiple times inside of a scene so that our natural conclusion is that choose some kind of wild robot. So I'm going to go ahead and switch to the standard, maximized Screen mode so that you can see that the name of this image, in case you want to open it, is Megan world.psd. It's found inside the 11 layer mask folder. You remember maybe 'Westworld' with Yul Brynner in it? Same thing, just its Meganworld right next door. It's got a bunch of robot Megans running around.
She has absolutely just the perfect look. I think she sort of looks like the combination of it, of a 60s sort of style in woman along with a vulcan. For me that does it anyway. I think she looks awesome. So for some of you that might be enough, just to show you that this is a kind of stuff that's possible, just further inspiration. Others, you'll want to know how I put it together and if you're curious about how we would make such a composition, then tell you what, join me in the next exercise and I will tell you.
